The new owners have kept the name Don Luis. When I stopped by several weeks ago planning to get lunch, the manager told me they do not accept takeout orders, so I walked out. I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that charged $3.99 for chips and salsa...the chips are bottomless, but also stale, greasy, and crumbs, and each additional cup of salsa is $.50/each. Then we ordered tacos...they were tasteless, lacked filling, and tiny! And the "double beans" we asked for were smaller than the single beans with the rice that were originally brought to the table. Our kids had the kids quesadillas and kid taco meals - ate it right up with no argument or constant reminding to eat. Our server was attentive and even the manager came by to make sure we had everything. Even offered complimentary churros as a thank for a little wait on our food, which I didn't think was a wait at all but who passes up free churros?! I came here to eat for the first time. Was Sat to eat almost immediately. The restaurant wasn't even half full at prime time Saturday night dinner. Needless to say that was the last time we saw an employee in the place. After 15 minutes of nothing, I got up and left. Very disappointing experience!! I ordered tacos to go. The person who took the order asked if I wanted a "tableta" with 10 for $20 or if I wanted to order from the menu. I said two orders from the menu. One with 3 tacos de lengua and the other order 3 tacos de carnitas. When I went to pick up my order she gives me a small very light container. I asked are the two orders here? She said yes. When I opened the container there were 6 MINI tacos that looked more like an appetizer a SMALL appetizer. One mini container of hot sauce (ONE!!!!!) That looked like a joke. Of course I did not take the order . How could I give my husband a dinner that could fit all in one of my hands?. There were people (not many) in the bar area, but in the restaurant it self there was no one. No wonder why. This is a second bad experience in that place. Will not go back. We miss El Paso so much. We used to order (mostly take-out) weekly and get yummy food at a reasonable price. Service is very friendly, but now the menu has been cut by more than half and prices have gone up a lot (not an inflation jump--like trying to make the place high-end casual instead of family-friendly). In my visit this week burritos are $20, a plate of nachos, if you add ground beef, are $18. I ordered fajitas, which were over $20 but that seemed ok because they were steak. The steak was cut the wrong way on the grain, which means they were tough to eat. The rice looked and ate like instant (dehydrated) rice. No more interesting meat options for your food (you can only get chicken enchiladas, the quesadilla meats, which add $4 to you $14 entree are just the base beef, chicken, maybe shrimp). The quality of the food is not better than it used to be. They are charging upscale Mexican food prices for plates that look to be from any neighborhood joint. If the prices and nickel and diming ($0.50 for extra salsa, etc) hadn't gone crazy I would give 3-4 stars, but if you're charging Guapos prices I better see real steak and shrimp, cooked the right way. Absolutely outstanding service! We came in with my family members who drove in from Chicago. Our server, Carlos, and the manager were so accommodating to every need and were quite entertaining too! They made sure we weren't without drinks and our food came out fast. The shrimp tacos I had were delicious and made from fresh tacos. The sauces the others meals came with were amazing and the burritos were huge! You have to try the "el gringo burrito" that has fries inside of it. What you got for your money was definitely worth it. The manager was telling us the story of how he got into the restaurant business and how the place was recently updated (july 2023) in which I might add it looks fantastic! There is lots of variety on the menu, the atmosphere is welcoming and bright, and the front patio is fun to sit at while you watch a game or two. The habanero margarita was hot/spicy as h*ll, fyi. Can't order sweet tea because they didn't have tea...next the food. Taste was so so, nothing special. Missing side with one of the order. Brought this up with the waiter his response was "oh yea we were out of the ingredient". So... why not inform your customer about this?? This restaurant is pretty cute. It was my first time dining here and I really liked the art work of the walls and tables. We were standing there for about five minuets before someone noticed we were there and sat us. Once we got our food everything looked so delicious and it tasted pretty good. I was a little underwhelmed by my birria because it wasn't as hot and cheesy as I wanted it to be. Kinda luke warm and there was no cheese pull. The horchata was so good. The salsa we got with our chips was a little plain but the chips were good. Meh, not bad. My friend got the tacos and she said she really liked them. We got the cheese dip with meat or something and that tasted so good. Even better than the birria sauce. The birria sauce was very oily and had no flavor. I have given this place a couple tries and I just haven't found something that has clicked yet. The menu is quite extensive, and the look of the place is great, but the food is pricey, and despite some very appealing sounding items, rather bland to my taste. As for the free chips and salsa, at least with take away, they only give you a very small bag of chips (that don't taste very good) and salsa that is near inedible. There still is plenty on the menu to try (like their beef short ribs that look appealing, if not uber expensive), so I haven't given up on the place, but I won't be going out of my way to return. read more

Some of the most attentive service I can recall with the proprietor assure quality without being intrusive. We had tried the previous incarnation of this restaurant when it was called my another name several years ago and found it to be just above average. This current version seems to have taken several steps backwards. The warning signs were there when we asked for an Arnold Palmer and our waitress didn't seem to have a clue about what that was. I had to explain to her "ya know the one with iced tea and lemonade" and she asked if we wanted them with sweet or unsweetened iced tea and we said unsweetened. She came out with two unsweetened iced teas (no ice). I requested a lemonade with ice so we could make the drinks that we wanted (but that didn't come out until after our meals were served and had to remind her again about it). The meals were a bit subpar with grilled chicken covered with a white cheese sauce and rice and beans. It was like they were trying to cover for the fact that the chicken had no flavor with a cheese sauce to kick it up a bit which seems as what they did. The rice and beans were standard fare for a typical chain Mexican restaurant while the plantains were a nice touch albeit nothing special. They also added some sliced avocados which was a nice touch. The chips and salsa were brought out when we first arrived but if you want them bottomless, you'll have to pay extra for that. The salsa was no more than your average bland Old El Paso which most Mexican restaurants are forced to serve because people complaining about the spice level and it being too spicy. To be honest, the salsa was more like diced tomatoes chopped up with no spice which most people seem to like at these chain establishments. The restaurant was extremely loud but the tv's were a nice touch for those wanting to watch a game. We also found it annoying that people were smoking just outside the restaurant near the front door and with the doors open allowed the smoke to come into the restaurant making it very uncomfortable. read more

Had a terrific dinner Friday evening at Don Luis. The quest fundido was excellent, as was the Mexican corn. Loved the amazing Plato Azteca- it was fresh and well made - a terrific portion for a hungry man. Capped it off with the bread pudding (a special treat not always available). Food is great! My family and I were coming here when it was El Paso and this is our 2nd time back since they changed to Don Luis and it was on Cinco De Mayo. Now while the service did have a few hiccups, the server was very nice and apologetic for any mistakes or miscommunication. So I give them a pass on this. Being accountable goes a long way so I appreciate the acknowledgement when mistakes are made. We always order the Queso and street tacos and I specifically always order the Lengua tacos (amazing!). Sad downgrade from El Paso. I went on opening day. The menu is greatly reduced with no vegetarian entrees, no Chile relleno, no carnitas (other than in tacos), and no enchiladas (other than one chicken enchilada plate). All of my favorites gone, I tried the carnitas tacos. They were tasty but tiny. I have never seen such small tortillas - except for Tostito rounds and frozen mini tacos. I hope management gets enough feedback about the horribly limited menu. Most of the remaining items were pricy - $20 and more. To be fair, the mini tacos were only $3.40 but you need 5 or 6 for a reasonably sized meal. Also, they also now charge $4 for refillable chips and salsa. Most of my chips were broken and unusable. Until I hear otherwise, I will be going to one of the remaining El Paso locations. By the way, at the time of this review, the Yelp menu was incorrect and still the one for El Paso, previously at this location. read more

Be prepared to pay a premium for below average tasting Mexican. This is coming from someone who never went to this location when the previous owners had it so I have no baggage going into it. This was the blandest Mexican I've ever had it was quite shocking given the price & aesthetic they were going for. I'm fine with high prices I'm fine with small portions if the quality matches that and lives up to it. This place is so baffling it's like they said hey let's buy out this neighborhood Mexican restaurant charge 30% more but skimp on the quality & flavor profile & hope no one notices..? Seems like they're just banking on making money at the bar without putting any effort into the food side. You can tell there's no love for the craft here it seems to purely just be a business venture from someone who doesn't care very much about putting in the extra effort to bring out the most flavors they can. I had the absolute worst experience at this restaurant today! If you've been to the previous El Paso Restaurant that was here first, don't expect there to be any similarities. The food and service are the absolute worst! I ordered the grilled chicken salad that was advertised to have 9 ingredients. When the salad was delivered, I asked for an extra salsa, the waitress said she would be right back. In the meantime, I realized that 5 of the 9 ingredients were missing from the salad. I set it aside and waited for the server to come back. While I was waiting the 15 minutes it took for her to come back, the manager walked by me a dozen times and said nothing to me (even though my salad was sitting there and I clearly wasn't eating it). When I finally see the server, she takes the salad from me and the manager said he'll take it off the check. Neither one of them offer to give me a new salad made correctly. So basically I had chips and salsa for lunch. I had ordered a to-go order. When I served it to my husband, I realized it was the wrong burrito. I had ordered steak and it was chicken and it was the different kind. It literally had 90% rice and a few pieces of chicken. It was a TOTAL waste of money, no better than a Taco Bell burrito except it was $20. By the way, the manager sat on his phone (on speaker, mind you), the entire time I was there. Took my husband and friend here after the renovation, menu change and business take over. My husband was so excited because he was looking forward to the birria tacos since May after going back over seas. We are highly disappointed. We were told that the chips and salsa were no longer complimentary and the hike in prices were due to better quality. No way was this better quality. The birria loaded fries were soggy. The birria tacos had no flavor and the consommé was smaller than previous. Ordering regular tacos, no sauce, onion, jalapeños, radish, or limes. Nothing! Like that's basic sides needed for tacos, come on. Server seemed like he was still learning the new menu and was having a rough time with all the tables. He tried his best but didn't know the difference between lemons and limes, saying they had no limes and only lemons. If you just want mediocre food with barely any flavor and to some what satisfy your cravings, sure, go here. We were extremely sad, wish we knew where the old chef went. My sis and I went to EL PASO before and it was great. Too bad the restaurant changed owner and their name. Toward the end the food and service have changed. The restaurant name changed to DON LUIS. We tried once before and it sucked so we have not gone back for awhile. We decided to give it a try again and have lunch today. It was going well in the beginning. However, we kept getting 3 different servers. The first server was not attentive. We asked for the check and came out to be $93. Then this girl I believe her name is Christine/Christina, gave us our check. There was no itemized bill and I asked for one. She came back and told us that she forgot to add my extra drink but still no itemized bill. She did not even apologize and gave a bill of different amounts that came out to be like $103 but she stated she canceled my sister's card. Why would you do that?! All she had to do was give a separate bill and charge the remaining. She just looked clueless and did not give darn. Stood there. At least acknowledge your mistake and apologize then we would be ok with it. They are lucky even to get some kind of tip. Just want to say that WE WILL NOT GO BACK THERE and HOPE NO ONE GOES THERE EITHER. FAIL!!!! read more
