I don't know when this place changed owners, but I can think of no other reason for the changes in the dishes. One of my favorite things, something I'd never encountered in any other Mexican restaurant, was their bean dip. My family and I could never get enough of it. The same was true of the 'Bisteca'. It was cooked perfectly, and free of big pieces of fat. Not long ago, my oldest daughter was visiting. She'd moved away and all she wanted was to go back to Don Ponchos again...Such a disappointment. Went for lunch. Service is quite slow for there only being 3 people in there. Waitress brought me an old water 1/4 way full with a used straw. Rice and Beans are good in the combo plate. So was the chicken enchilada. Carne asada soft taco was okay. Carne was charred. Chicken was tender. Waited for the check for almost 15 mins. Bottom line, I will go again. Food is good, service is slow. And dont sit by the window. The flies gather there. read more

I have been here several times now, and so far Don Pancho's is my favorite place to have Mexican food here in Petaluma. The place is clean and inviting. The staff is fast and friendly. The food is delicious and spiced just right. The cheese enchiladas are are nice and cheesy, although I would not complain if they put more! Lol The rice and beans are very tasty, and the chimichanga is good sized and stuffed well with great taste. Others may claim another place here is the best, but I myself disagree. Had lunch delivered yesterday via PFT. Food was great, Cubano torta, cartinas macha burrito and regular pastor burrito. Everything was delicious, the salsa and chips were super fresh. We had 2 margaritas delivered as well, they were perfect. Margaritas are not on the menu I was told to call PFT and they added them to my order! So after a long day of watching soccer in San Ramon then rushing to Petaluma for the 2nd game of the day we dropped in to Dos Panchos Restaurant. I really wanted an authentic Mexican lunch/dinner. We sat down and got served bean dip with chips and salsa and it was good and I thought here we go. We put in 2 orders of the Carnitas Plate and the food was served with minutes. The meat was dry on one side and greasy on the other. Nothing on the plate had any flavor, whats so ever, nothing. Me and my daughter did not finish our plates. Came here based off of menu items and we were not disappointed!! Such fast service, probably the fastest service I've ever received. Staff was so friendly and the food was amazing. Compared to most Mexican restaurants, the chips were above average (but would have been better salted), the salsa was below average, and the ahogada torta was...I don't know, it was the first one I've ever had so I don't have a frame of reference. It wasn't bad though. On the strength of the food alone I would give it three stars, but the service was attentive and cheerful, so they earned an extra from me. read more

Dropped by for dinner and decided on a couple of plates. Both were pretty decent so it hit the spot at the right sort of price but I'm going with an 'OK' rating because there was nothing that was served that was exceptional - in many ways it's pretty standard Mexican food. Perhaps there are some exceptional items but that's for another visit. They're nice folk and the service was good. 3 stars is for the sweet lovely girl that took our order. She did everything she could possibly do to make it a pleasant easy take out order. Upon going home the burritos were all wrong. This is always so disappointing because I know the servers can not open your burrito to be sure it's been prepared correctly ! I love Mexican food but I just absolutely hate beans! My kids love them my husband loves them I hate them! So of course I got beans ! I will live though so no biggie... my son likes refried beans ... he got whole. Hubby wanted shrimp... he got three pieces. 3! So 3 burritos for 35bucks was a bit overpriced to say the least. They were also very small.. there was no difference in the regular size and the super. Wondering why we paid 11.99 for a super shrimp burrito because it certainly didn't make up for it in the excessive amount of non existent shrimp. Probably won't go back anytime soon. But again the server was very nice no complaints 2hrs later my son is vomiting and I can't eat half my burrito because the rice tastes so over Done ... this is awful... never again Don never again!! We go to Don Panchos quite often since it's our favorite place for Mexican food. The folks here are always really nice, the place is clean and the food is always consistently good. My favorite thing to get here are the Carnitas tacos. My mom loves the enchiladas, which you can order with green sauce if you ask. It's an affordable spot and pretty convenient in a shopping center. It's nice to take care of shopping and drop in there for lunch. read more

From out of town, we wanted Mexican that was close to our camp site. We called ahead saying we had 18 people, we could sit 9 and 9 and were on our way. We got there, two tables ready for us, plus a booth because we ended up with 21 people. The margaritas were great. Everyone loved all the salsas from mild to super hot, plus the mildly spicy bean dip. The service was great, we might have been helped by the owner or manager, he was very accommodating to "special" orders. The food came fairly quickly, was hot and delicious. Everyone raved about the food from shrimp cocktail to carnitas. I had the pulpos (octopus) tostada - it was tasty and tender. The chili rellenos were delicious also. Food is mediocre. One of the waitresses brought her sick teenage child to work. The poor girl was laying at a booth with her meds lined up on the table and coughing a lot. We moved as far as we could From her. Awful to contaminate the restaurant. I will never go back since they have such little regard for the health of their customers. Don Pancho's is the kind of Mexican restaurant I remember going to as a child. Before the terquoise taqueria became the norm in the 90s, it was all dark wood with full bars, and every entree came with matching scoops of Mexican fried rice and delicious, lard-packed refried beans. Not a lot of bright flavors, but consistently hearty and comforting. This is Mexican-American food, something made clear by the presence of burgers on the menu, and it is entirely comfortable in its strip mall location. Waitstaff is friendly and fast, and the the location feels nicely worn without feeling dirty. read more

Don Panchos is hidden amongst the many storefront retailers at "Plaza North", a crowded mall in Petaluma. But once inside, the food is really really good, and would compare favorably to all the Mexican restaurants in Petaluma. The food is a solid 3+. Service is quick, accurate, friendly, and helpful (thanks to Claudia!). We both had taco salads, mine with pollo asado and the wife with shredded beef; these were complete meals and delicious. I'm giving 4 stars overall due to the fact they have been there forever, a testimony to their ability to maintain a customer base for so long. Many Petaluma restaurants have bitten the dust over the years, usually for good reason. I did eat at Don Pancho many years ago, and kind of forgotten about it but remembered the food as quite exceptional; I am so glad we went back and we shall return. Its a keeper. read more

I would never step foot into this Restaurant again. First of all the food is mediocre, the manner the meals are prepared to appeal for the masses and the food was definitely overpriced for the quality. The service was terrible! our waitress was rude, we had to repeatedly ask several times for tableware, napkins and refill our beverage cups. I have never heard of a restaurant charging for an additional plate, I wasn't too hunger so my sister and I decided to share a burrito but when we asked if we could get an extra plate she told us there would be an extra charge for that. Well, we couldn't tell if they messed up on me getting chicken in my burrito and my husband getting pork in his chimichunga, so that tells you something. They were both shredded, both the same color and both tasted kind of nondescript. The sauce poured over my wet burrito was very watery and had some chunks of meat we also tried to distinguish, looking at each other saying, "beef?" There was no melted cheese on the burrito which is also not normal of a wet burrito. The food was edible but not deserving of a repeat. read more

I have no idea why anyone would have any negative comments whatsoever about this restaurant. Last Wednesday I stumbled upon Don Panchos during a lunch break at work and was wonderfully surprised to receive a friendly greeting followed by immediate seating. The dish that I chose was cooked to perfection. These people really know how to make their food. I will be returning for the Carne Asada & Steak Picado again in the future. The only set back which made me review less was when i came on a busy night and had to wait nearly 45 minutes for my meal to be served leaving me with little time to eat. You will find fast and friendly service 99.7 % of the time when coming to this restaurant on most days however. Good job! :) read more
