Doña Anita's has been a great go to spot for lunch. Everything about this place is more than what you would want for a Mexican restaurant. The vibe here is simple, relaxed, with a friendly atmosphere. We come here for lunch as it is only open from 11am-2pm. The waiters are always super friendly and provide amazing service. These ladies are always on point with orders and constantly making sure everything is ok. Food here is also good. Authentic Mexican food is their specialty from Fajitas a la Parrilla to Enchiladas Montada's & everything in between. The sopaipilla's are a must if in need of dessert. Home made & super delicious. I highly recommend Doña Anita's for lunch. Make sure to go somewhat early as it gets pretty pack at around 12. It's just that good. read more

The first time I went it was too long of a wait so we left. This time it wasn't too bad. Recommended by a coworker who is a Midlander. She said to get the chile rellenos so I got the beef chile rellenos. Yes they are huge, but the beef was salty as hell. I do give them the extra star for their friendly service and their chips and salsa were good. Ate all the chips because we were waiting so long for our food. It seems like the Mexican Rice, Beans, beef etc taste the same as most of the mexican restaurants I've tried . It's sad that I would prefer Rosa's Cafe to get mexican food! read more

George W. Bush gets criticized for a lot of things: lack of judgement, poor leadership, questionable decisions. My main qualm with him is his lack of taste in Mexican food. After some research, I found that Dona Anita's was the Bush family's favorite while they lived in Midland. I also have frequently dined at the OK but not great El Paso Mexican restaurant in Arlington, VA that Bush enjoyed while he was in the White House. Not that these two places were bad, they weren't. They just weren't presidential in quality. Dona Anitas is a hole in the wall type place with a dark interior, aging tables and quirky decor. It's exactly what I expected in Midland, TX. I ordered the chile relleno and an enchilada, items that should be right in their wheelhouse. The relleno was all batter with little chile flavor coming through. The enchilada was OK but soggy with bland sauce. The beans and rice were excellent though. The pricing was low also. It was a bit of a hike from the freeway, but worth the stop if you're hungry. At the least you can see the collection of photos and autographs from the Bush family on the wall. This is my favorite Mexican food restaurant in Midland! The El Presidente plate is huge, but has a little of everything on it. Their tacos carbon can't be beat, and neither can their fajitas. If you have the room left after lunch, they have the best sopapillas that I've ever had. Ever. Huge and fluffy and covered in cinnamon sugar. I had some delicious tacos and a Texas beer served in a mug so frosty, it almost turned into a slushie. Though the food is good, the owner Luz is a star in her own right. She treats her guests like family and has a few stories to tell if you catch her at the right time (ask her about her trip to the White House!). So far the staff seems to be louder than the customers. Granted there weren't many customers yet, but its generally not a good idea to be yelling and laughing so everyone in the restaurant can hear what you are saying. Other than that, Dona Anita's was a good meal. They don't uses the highest quality ingredients, but they make this comfort kind of Mexican food that you really don't see in larger cities. Its hard to describe because I am really not too familiar with it and I honestly had to get used to it. Once I did though, I really enjoyed it. My favorite dish was the Carne Guisada. It was is a flavorful brown gravy that you just want to sop up with tortillas after all the meat is all gone. there is really no attempt to make it have a fresh or light taste to it. It is pure comfort food, creamy with a strong meaty flavor that will crash you on the couch when you're done. The queso was one of the things I definitely had to get used to. We ordered the queso with meat in it - I can't remember the actual name - and it threw me off with a new flavor I wasn't used to. I really have no idea what it was. On our second visit I gave it another chance since my coworker went crazy for it. He mixed it with some guacamole to lighten the flavor and it made this amazing mix of flavor, part creamy comfort part...I don't know, avocado..and it just worked. It lighted up the queso just enough to make it oh so delicious. While I wouldn't order everything I had again, there are definitely some menu items like the carne guisada that I would definitely go back for. read more

We chose this place because it was able to accommodate us on a Friday night when the place we originally wanted go was a 1.5-2 hours wait. The staff was friendly and happily told us what the best things on the menu were. There were about 10 of us there. The drinks were so-so but for not having a bar, it was alright. They had a selection of wine margarita, sangria, and bottled beers served in chilled mugs. I ordered the taco salad which was stated to be "hearty" but I thought was overpriced and too small for a dinner salad. The others ordered mostly ordered enchiladas. Everyone seemed pretty happy with their food, but it wasn't outstanding or anything super special. I will give props to them having good salsa! read more

Great place to go! The owner of the restaurant is usually there and if she is, she comes to greet you even if she doesn't know you. This is total comfort food! Me and my family enjoy going there to eat. Most of the servers come and talk to you as if you're family. This place is definitely gringo friendly! Some places look at you funny if you don't know how to pronounce the names of dishes, but Don Anita's has letters you can say instead of the actual name in case you can't pronounce it. read more

Always busy but for good reason. The food here is amazing and the service is super friendly. I come here every time I'm in town and I'm always treated nicely and quickly. LOVE this place! It's a bit off the beaten path, but the food is excellent and always good. My kids like the queso, of course. I almost always order one of the platters with one of everything on it... love the Chile Rellenos, enchiladas, tamales, rice, and beans. My kids enjoy the combo burritos smothered in chile con queso. This is Mexican food for gringos, for sure- it is not super-spicy. Dona Anita's always has very good service, and the food is fast and hot. Luz is generally in the restaurant, making her way around the tables to greet people, checking on the food and waitstaff, and taking care of business. A great place to eat- and we can feed our family of 6 a sit-down meal with tip cheaper than to-go food at the local take-out Mexican place. read more

I saw the sign for Dona Anita's one day and said to myself, "I will go there soon." I just knew it was going to be a bit of dive and that it probably had some decent and authentic Mexican food. I had been to Rosa's and its atmosphere seemed a little too cheerful and, well, loud. I liked the food there too, but I knew this place would have something a little extra. Who was Dona Anita? Was she in the back breading some chile rellenos? So I popped in on a busy Wednesday night ---busy because literally I was the fourth party walking in to a table. I ordered the queso first and then the house special, which is a combo plate of cheese enchilada, taco, tamale and chile relleno. All the items were very good. Were the best I've ever had? No. Were they bad? Absolutely not. What wasn't great either was the queso. It was borderline inedible ---tasted a lot like flour and it was extremely salty. It just didn't taste much like cheese. Oh well. The combo plate was fine. The beans OK, the rice so-so. I wish a place would spend a little more time getting these basics down. Salsas were pleasantly spicy, so that was good. I almost forgot about the two freshly made flour tortillas, to sop up the beans and salsa on the plate, but they were delicious too. Sweet tea was brought in too big of cup. So much that I took it home. All in all, a cheap meal ----in and out for under $20 read more

Will definitely be back to eat again soon! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic, right out of abuelita's kitchen Mexican food. The atmosphere is comfortable and home-y and the staff are friendly and attentive. I had the brisket tacos; the meat was juicy and flavorful and tacos beautifully dressed with crisp lettuce, sliced tomato and shredded cheese. The beans and rice on the side completed the dish nicely and I personally like to drizzle queso on top of the rice just to make it that much more delicious. We've been going here for years and still enjoy it. The portions have gotten a little smaller, but they've worked hard to improve wait times. I timed it last week, from the time we ordered until our main courses arrived was 9 minutes! And this was at 6:00 on Friday night. I like the chicken fajitas. Service was horrible, we waited 10 mins just to place a drink order, and to get our food it took almost an hour and the place was pretty empty. The food was gross! The menudo was just awful to look at let alone to even eat. The asado was questionable as well, what kind of meat was that anyways?! Overall experience was a shame.
