Horrible, Horrible service. We were the first customers to arrive when the door opened. three after us, and 4 more parties arrived. Not offered drinks, waiting and waiting to at least 20 minutes, and we were never looked at by the waitresses or the owner walking around. Didnt take our order at all. Finally after 30 minutes and still not even being asked if we would like to start with some drinks, we left and went to Umami's where we were serviced right away. I went to Dong Hae the other night for dinner and it was pretty good. There are tons of different rolls to try and the prices are decent. I had miso soup, soy beans and the baked lobster roll. The soup hit the spot! The roll was large and was a California roll with lobster on top. The service was ok, it was pretty busy and I was only one person. Came in and grabbed a unagi & avocado bowl for dinner to-go. For $11, I got a medium-large sized fancy to-go container of steamed rice and about 6 pieces of bbq eel and fresh avocado. Soooo I am from Nor Cal, where there are plenty of great Sushi options.... I admit I was hesitant to try this place based on location and some of the reviews found here on Yelp, but here's my assessment: 1. The Sushi is good. It's typical Sushi that you would find at most good (not great, but good) Sushi places. 2. The problem with the aforementioned statement is that they charge about $3-$4 more, per roll, for the quality and quantity of Sushi you would find in restaurants up north. Although, it's supply and demand down here, so can you really blame them?? The sushi chef was super friendly and joked with us from across the room because I inquired about what type of tune they were serving in their sashimi. It was for my husband, but he thought it was for me, so he got fancier on the presentation (so he said). He was nice, and the overly decorative presentation of food was not necessary, but was a nice touch. While the prices are higher than preferred, I'm pregnant, and some days I just want sushi (cooked of course). So even if it means digging a little deeper into the pockets, I will go back here if the craving calls. read more

I think one of my favorite things about this place, is how funny the cooks are behind the sushi bar. So often I'll hear one of the cooks singing or joking with customers, and it just makes this restaurant so much better. On top of the awesome, friendly customer service, the main and only korean sushi bar chef gave us a complimentary delish umami-flavored sashimi dish that was slightly charred and he said it was one of the fattiest yet tasty fish they don't offer on the menu. Had a very good meal here tonight. Teriyaki chicken meal was delicious. Had the Jessica roll and it was fresh and well prepared. Also had the baked crab roll for half price since we went in during Happy Hour, which is from 5 to 7. The deal is buy one get one half off. However the Special Rolls aren't included. My least favorite was the tempura veggies and although they were hot and fresh, they didn't have hardly any flavor. Ive been contemplating for a couple days on wether or not I really wanted to leave this review and Ive finally come to my conclusion. My family and I have been avid consumers and had once decided this was the best sushi place in town, but as of my recent experience we will no longer be supporting this business due to the lack of good customer service. We tend to always order a specific order, and for the past 5 times they have been able to fulfill. My wife called to place the exact order the other day and the head server was rude about being able to place it, she also refused to let us talk to a supervisor or manager and even refused to give us her name. She offered some alternatives, but they where at a much higher price than what we normally pay, even during the pandemic. We called back a couple times to attempt to place our order, being that we really did enjoy their sushi but again we where refused our plate. As a business owner, I understand that there can be misunderstandings and mistakes,but I also understand the importance of customer service. In this case nothing was done to sustain our business. We are disappointed, we really did enjoy this location, but as of our recent experiences we will be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Have been here twice and both times the service was great. The servers are friendly, thoughtful, and helpful. The sushi tastes great and the rolls are interesting and creative. Generous edamame portion, and tasty soups. The only issues I really had were that the water cup wasn't as clean as it should be, (smelled funny), and that the tempura sauce was not sweet like it should be. A sushi restaurant tucked on a corner. We eat here once in a while if we happen to be in Lompoc instead of Santa Maria for lunch. The service is okay, as is the food. I have noticed even if the restaurant is nearly empty that you must have time and patience. This is not a place for a quick sit-down meal. I like their lunch special bento style box. My husband is partial to the special rolls. You get a good amount of food for price, I just honestly wish the rolls would be created a bit smaller. It is difficult to maneuver a bite and most of these sushi rolls require multiple bites to eat. Dong Hae's is literally our first thought of where to go eat Sushi in all of Santa Barbara county!! They make incredible sushi, especially that Avacado bomb (pictured on their profile) which is great for sharing and my personal favorite the Hawaiian Roll! Truthfully that roll and the freshness of their fish, made me a huge fan of sushi and raw fish like I never, ever thought possible!! As a Japanese American, I am pretty sure Dong Hae is not a real phrase in Japanese. It sounds more like Korean to me... I tried 2 of their rolls and all I haver to say is, "eh." It was not the worst sushi that I've had, but I have had just as good quality, from a grocery store. Not a great sign. The California roll's imitation crab tasted very different than what I was used to. It almost tasted like they got a imitation crab salad from an American deli. Rolls in general are not Japanese, but this didn't really taste like "sushi." The quality of their tuna sashimi (the fish, without the rice) and the quality was mediocre at best. I was kind of disappointed in the place. I really don't like talking bad about anything, but I can't really write anything great about the place. Food: 1) Spider roll: The soft shell crab was over-fried and almost drenched in oil. It really detracted from the tasty-ness of the roll. Ambiance: Really nice Japanese decor with the wooden framed paper windows. The last guests that dined at that table must have spilled something because the floor was sticky where I was sitting. But overall, the restaurant had a nice sushi bar area or tables as options to dine at. The tables and chairs were plain jane but overall, pretty clean and neat looking. Service: Very nice waitresses but hard to get their attention. I had to try several times to flag down a waitress to ask for more ginger and wasabi. My water was never refilled. I would be more forgiving if it was really busy, but there were probably only a few parties there, including my table. The waitresses could have been more attentive. Price: The whole meal cost around $20 (including tax and tip) which is typical for two rolls at a Japanese place. Overall: I don't think it was worth coming back. Nice place to try though! read more

This is very good sushi. The service was outstanding and the food was very good. Lompoc is short on quality places to eat, but we are definitely adding Dung Hae to the list.
