This is a great find in Athens. They serve a wide variety of coffee and tea. My favorite is their chai. Even better than that is their chaider. It's served in the fall and it's AMAZING. I've spent four years worth of studying at this lovely establishment. My favorite drinks are the Vanilla Chai Latte (w/whole milk), Mocha, and just a good ol' fashioned light roast. Service is wonderful and there are about six rooms worth of seating including a small outdoor patio. Donkey's hours stretch to midnight all week and even stretch to 24/7 during finals weeks. Owners are environmentally friendly, with a variety of recycling options, deals for bringing your own mug, and paper straws. Not only was the Wi-Fi fast, but the seating was comfortable, the art on the walls was beautiful, and the overall vibe of the place was so relaxing and nice. Oh yeah, and the beverages were excellent as well! I got an iced mocha and an iced chai. Both were great, but the chai might have been the best chai I've ever had! It was a hot day, so I also tried one of their homemade Italian sodas, and it was perfectly refreshing and hit the spot! The bakery selection is usually sort of limited , but their main output (drinks) is always on point. The online ordering process works well. They have a refillable one purchase per day coffee deal that you can even take to go, as long as you return with your specially marked cup! I used this a lot during the semester when I had classes interspersed through the day and was doing a lot of walking uptown. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting athens. Donkey is your typical college coffee shop. It's calm, cool, and casual with a funky, artsy atmosphere. I adored it. The front room is more coffee shop-like while the back room brings you to more tables, armchairs, and a place for performers to perform. It's a great spot to get some work done, play a board game with friends, or enjoy some conversation. If I went to Ohio University, I would have been here all the time. I highly doubt I'll be in this town again (who knows), but if I ever am, I'm heading straight here for a chai tea latte. Sooo good. read more

Donkey gets a 5 star, for being the wonderful, cozy coffeeshop that it is! It's been around for a long time and to me, Donkey is synonymous with Athens! They have plenty of space, which was great for studying pre-COVID, and really all of their drinks are pretty good! I have tried their coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, and mochas, all have been great! They also used to have a turkish coffee special, which was wonderful, but they haven't had it for a while. Their best deal to me is their refillable coffee, which $3.95, but you can refill it for the whole day! They always have good and baristas are always nice. Came to visit my sister for sibs weekend and she brought me to this coffee shop. We had a pretty bad experience which my sister says is very unusual for this place. We both love lavender so we asked what is the best lavender drink they offer. A male employee tells us to get a lavender honey latte with oat milk. So we both get that. My sister gives them a $2 tip. I wait until after I try my food/drink before I decide to tip. We watched the girl make our drinks without adding lavender which we can clearly see is an empty bottle on the wall in front of us. We taste our drinks. There was 0 lavender it tasted like cheap honey. So we politely ask if they can add a little lavender and both employees get defensive. The woman says she added two pumps originally (she didn't). She also couldn't look in our direction. The man laughs and as he adds 2 pumps of lavender (a new bottle) in our drinks he says "can you see me adding the lavender." He then tells us condescendingly that next time we should ask for extra lavender if "we can't taste it." While we were waiting, both employees were swearing and complaining about their work. As a previous service worker, I get it, but that's not how you act at work. If someone didn't do the dishes earlier, you suck it up and get it done. We've all been there. I'm not paying extra for something you can do right the first time. Ridiculous when you charge $5. My sister is more upset than I am right now since she frequents this cafe. read more
