I came here because of the great reviews people commented about this place but boy do I regret it! This place is not for brunch! I came here with a party of 7 and 6 of us ordered bottomless mimosas and brunch. We were told that the all you can eat brunch buffet and bottomless drinks would be 20$ total, but we were charged 20$ for their disgusting brunch buffet and 8$ extra for the bottomless drinks for a total of 28$. Also, you cannot order bottomless drinks unless you pay for brunch. We were not allowed to change our bottomless drink selection so if you ordered mimosas you cant change it to blood marys at any point. We were only able to order bottomless drinks for 90 minutes but the waitress was never at our table! We spent most of the time waiting for her to bring us drinks than we did drinking! On top of that the drinks were watered down with barely any alcohol. So not worth the price. The brunch buffet was mediocre at best. the food was stale and looked sickly. I dont know how anyone can mess up bacon but this place did. There wasn't much food variety either for the price. The potatoes and meat tasted rancid. The only good thing about the brunch buffet is the guy making made-to-order omelettes. While he was working very hard to fulfill our orders, we were waiting up to 20 min at the omelette station just to get freaking omelettes because there was only one guy working there. The place is old, greasy, dark and has a bunch of fireplaces that are poorly placed. It looks dirty and haunted. The best looking thing about that place is probably the bathroom. The waitress was rude and sour. The place was obviously understaffed bc she never got around to our table. She sighed or said something under her breath every time we asked for our drinks and made the effort to attend to every table except ours. Her attitude was definitely not welcoming. And for the icing on the cake they included a 60% gratuity tip on our bill! After giving us disgusting food and mediocre service. The only person that deserved any tip was the guy making omelettes. Donovan's is a Woodside mainstay, but it should hardly make your list as any kind of neighborhood touring stop in. Donovan's is made for the locals. So leave expectations at the door, and just stop in for a good old fashioned drink. Oh, and the wings. The Wednesday bucket and wings special is a great deal. I'm not generally a wings fan, but their non-buffalo flavors have got me sold (teriyaki, woot!) The wings are crispy delectable good, and no where close to the soggy orange blue cheese on the side crap that makes me gag. You get a ton of pieces too, so I'm left rather full from all the meat by the end if I'm finishing off a plate by myself. As for the famed burgers... When I first came here and ordered the Wisconsin, which is the Mac n'Cheese Burger, I thought it was awesome. I had it a second time on the heels of having the Astoria Burger at Oliver's and it pales grossly in comparison. Just all grease and fat and less flavor than I first remembered (with no veggies if you don't ask for it!) I hear there are other burger variations that are touted more highly, but I think Oliver's hipster-palate designed version has me spoiled for quite some time. Still though, Donovan's is a nice old school, family-esque, older patrons leaning kind of spot. And I'm cool with that refreshing break from most other young trendy spots I generally end up at. I've gone here a lot of times with my family and for the most part I've liked everything I've gotten. Their fish n chips is pretty good, the burgers are always superb, and the wings are absolutely delicious. I also love the chicken fingers, we always get them. Also the potato skins are my favorite appetizer on the menu. The only thing u just recently got that I didn't like was the Biscuit Topped Pot Pie. It was kind of just too soup inside, and the chicken was shredded. Overall it wasn't great. I would've enjoyed more chicken chunks. Went to Donovan's Pub for Happy Hour and dinner on Friday evening. A solid pub with good beer and decent food, a place where you will likely see the same faces night after night. Quality: Donovan's Pub is one of many Irish pubs in this small area of Queens. It has the classic look on the outside and on the inside. They serve cold beers and have a decent food menu. I was not crazy about the Potato Skins, but the burger I ordered was solid. These are not gourmet burgers, they are just old school ground beef, the way burgers are supposed to be. I got The Jack, which added some heat with jalapenos, chipotle mayo, and pepper-jack cheese. Quantity: A good sized burger and a substantial portion of fries. Value: $8 for Potato Skins. $13 for The Jack Burger. $6-$8 for beers on Draft, but most drop to $4 or $5 during Happy Hour. Ambiance: Donovan's Pub is located in Woodside, Queens. It is an interesting location that has about half a dozen Irish pubs within a few blocks. We ended up picking Donovan's from the unique exterior. Inside you are immediately greeted by the bar. The bar area has some stools and just a table or two, it is made for standing around enjoying a pint. In the back, they have a dining area. A fireplace in the middle, the rest of the space has sections that look like either you are outside an Irish village or inside a church. Classic rock played over the speakers, but the acoustics were terrible making it hard to hear it or each other. Crowd: When I arrived the bar was standing room only. They are packed for Happy Hour and many of the regulars also like to stick around for dinner. Service: Quick with drinks and a staff happy to talk with anyone at the bar. Great vibe! First of all, our waitress was extremely welcoming and attentive! My husband and I decided to come by yesterday for some brunch, and we didn't leave disappointed. It was such an amazing time. After perusing the menu, I wanted at least four things, but alas my stomach wasn't going to hold all those in one sitting, so I opted for one--the Angus beef shell steak. It was so good. Yes, I had it medium rare on a melted mozzarella garlicky bun. Oh yes. Drenched in deliciously yum sauce and salted just right, that dish was savored and devoured in half an hour. I came armed with a grand appetite. Hence the disappearance of my French fries and main dish. I would absolutely revisit, and I recommend it to others. It's a hidden gem in Woodside neighborhood. I rate this place as high as I do because they really know how to pour daught beer and their lines are clean. Pouring a Guinness correctly is important. Pouring a Harp so well is a rare and enjoyable thing. If we stopped there and didn't get to the restaurant/food, this place would be top marks. I went because of the highly touted burgers. I'll say this - the burger itself was very good. Thick, juicy, flavorful. I get it! Good burger. But we had problems. For one, the service took a very long time, all around and with a not-busy dining area. I ordered a burger with mac'n'cheese on it (don't judge me!). Well, the mac'n'cheese was straight up ice cold. I took it off. They brought me some more, but by the time I got it, the rest ofthe meal was over. And the mac'n'cheese had a very propane smell to it. Inedible. Further- the specialty burger is supposed to come with lettuce & tomato, it did not, I had to ask after the fact. The bun was very charred (I get charringthe bun, but this was a bit much) and the bottom bun was super soggy when it was served. I ended up just eating the (albeit good on its own) burger without the bun or the aforementioned mac. The potato wedges were fine, though inconsistent in that some were under-cooked. The french onion soup and "mini" sheppards pie were fine, though pretty salty. Mini sheppard's pie was over half mash potato, for what it's worth. There was some sort of open mic or something very loud in the main room while we sat in the dining area (which had very low house music on, which was drowned out by the acousitc performance in the other room). I love live music, but just fair warning if you go on a Friday or Saturday. If I lived in the area and wanted a perfectly poured draught beverage and maybe some sports on TV, this place would be it. I may even order a non-specialty burger every now and then, but maybe have them not char the bun and bring it on the side so it doesn't sog up. read more

Yay for Donovans! I love Irish pubs, and this one doesn't disappoint. My parents used to take me here when I was a kid, and I remember the french onion soup being spectacular. Flash forward to my 28th year, and Lisa R. invited me to celebrate her mothers birthday at Donovan's. The place brought back so many memories - I hadn't been in maybe two decades. Still a cozy environment, saw a couple of romantic tables by the fireplace. The french onion soup is still legendary - and the prime rib special looked delicious. The fire house wings had a real deep heat to them, but were amazing. The draft beer was cold and fresh. The bar was nice and lively as one would expect on a Saturday evening. It's every element of a great burger. Here, I present to you a hamburger that makes you glad to be alive: But first, a tip: Nevermind what your mother told you, order it medium-rare. It's the only way at Donovan's. I don't know what the cheese is. I'm not saying this because it's exotic, I'm saying this because I want to admit my naivety towards cheese and so I can't even tell when it's cheddar or when it's American. Whatever the fuck it is, it's sharp and it goes great on the juicy burger. Oh, so juicy. And harsh with that char on the outside. Charrr. Like a pirate! I love how the bread gets wet with the juices midway through. By the end, when you are on your last fry (because you know I have to have a consistent burger to fry ratio at all times), you have a plate full of liquid remains of fat and meat and ketchup and onions and one bottom-soaked bun who's last request is to absorb all this typically neglected goodness ruining a previously clean plate. The fries are great too. These are steak fries in the thickness sense, but they arent the long thin variety we've gotten used to. More shaped like home fries, but a dry frying. Also, the neighborhood is getting gentrified and Donovan's real estate is up for grabs. I took the threat to heart and decided it was time I make a trip to Donovan's before it was no more. As a bar, Donovan's is great. Nice tvs in every corner, nook, and cranny of the room. Lots of tables too. My group of six had no trouble viewing the Giants and Yankees game as well as being comfortable in the corner round table. Service was good. Our waitress was very nice and very funny. She had an awesome streak of sarcasm and wit to her. I won't lie but I was more than disappointed with the burger. It has a reputation to live up to! The burger was nothing special but a big hunk of meat. Kind of bland and the meat too charred. It tasted better with some ketchup and the two slices of cheese were a Godsend. The fries were okay, big beefy wedges of potato. I'm glad I changed back from sweet potato fries because the sweet potato fries were lackluster. My most memorable moment of the night was my friend screaming out over my head that she saw something crawling. Oh lord, never tell that to me especially in a dark area. I had the heebie jeebies all night. Not to worry, they assured me. Donovan's has an A rating. A rating my ass, I kept staring at the shoes hanging from the ceiling. Why are there shoes hanging? I put 4.5 stars! This restaurant is one of my favorite place in my neighborhood and I haven't review this place before but it was my 5th time of visit. I always have the burger at this place and thought they're burger got better then before! (*as my memory, they got a grade C under? by health department about a year ago and had to close a bit. I was so busy and couldn't be there in the while so I really don't remember how long they've been closed and when they reopened. but I thought they improved after the closed at this time.) The burger is cooked perfect and so juicy and the side of fried potato is tasty. (it has a potato skin!) and price and portion is great too. I love to try the different burger shop in Manhattan and I have a favorite burgers in there but this place makes me comeback every little while. It's definitely one of my 5 best burgers in NY:) The place itself has a good numbers of seats and good old bar area at the front. You'll see a lots of neighbors hangout to have a beers and food. My favorite point of the restaurant is the decor. old, antique looking furnitures including small fireplace and wine storage room. I may recommend for everyone who willing to try this restaurant to be expect that this old school neighbor's favorite place has "the old school service" by experienced waitresses. You'll find this local gem on the corner of 58th street and Roosevelt Avenue underneath the number 7 train. Once you walk in all you see is a long bar and some tables to the left of it. Keep on walking in the hostess which he or she will take you to one of two dining halls they have The first one which is straight ahead has a few steps to walk down is pretty dim inside maybe due to all the dark wood none the less they have some tables in the middle and booths off to the side. The best part the fireplace, I love to always sit in this room especially in the winter time when the fireplace is on, nice and toasty when your sitting next to the warm fire. Now I know by now you want to hear all about the burger. Okay well here you have it: Amazing-mouth warming good, cooked to perfection and huge. You won't be disappointed. Came here a few weeks ago after the Met game, because maria and i were in the mood for a good burger. We dragged a few people with us, in the 200 degree weather that day. First let me say: its an Irish pub with a few tables so i guess its also a restaurant. And the employees are definitely Irish. I could tell by their accents. Yeah, i'm pretty smart about stuff like that. Unfortunately, the service is very, very slow. How slow? it took about 15 minutes just to get a menu. And our waitress was also the hostess of the restaurant, which only made the whole thing worse. So lets get to it: the burger was outstanding, truly delicious. Is it the best I've had in New York? no it isn't, that distinction still goes to Corner Bistro in the west Village. But still, this was a very good burger. What can you say about the decades old home style and service mainstay Donovan's. First, the old style original decor and classic pub smell of Donovan's is fantastic. I usually order a delicious bacon cheeseburger w/chipotle mayo that comes with steak fries or huge fantastic onion rings. This is good ol' greasy juicy pub food done home style above everyone else. Ordered 2 burgers with fries and onion rings, 5 drinks and a dessert for $65. Wow! Servings are large. In the past I have also had their French onion soup, chicken pot pie and a few other dishes which were all great. Stop in and have a different experience at a place like no other. The bartender and the locals are friendly and welcoming (even to an admitted Yankee fan at a Mets bar). And the prices are reasonable. What more do you need? Ok, so I just went back to this place. I still think that the burger is off the hook amazing! Not sure what the backlash is while reading these other reviews. My first time. Other family members have been before. I am picky but they served eight of us for dinner and did a great job. Good food but the staff was what made it. Very accommodating. After walking through the horrific slush snow, getting the bottom half of my jeans all soaked and freezing legs just to come here, I must say, I am not happy! I ordered a cheeseburger meal for take-out..this meal cost me $9.25 total ($8.50 on the menu, tax I guess). I was not impressed at all. The beef was burnt , even though it didn't effect the inside. The fries were not crispy enough and there were only a few of them. It's a shame, I've wanted to come here for a long, long time now and this is what I get. There's not much you can complain about at Donovan's. Though it is a pub, there is no feeling and smell of a stinky old pub. The people are welcoming and the tables are clean. You can always find a family eating dinner with kids or a group of old friends enjoying some wings. This place is just an old neighbourhood hangout with good food. Through several visits, we've had burgers, wings, poppers, and grilled chicken sandwiches. Oh yea, and beer. The Guinness was perfectly poured each time and tasted perfect. So this place is one of my fiancé's favorite spot for buffalo wings - he likes them crispy and they make it how he likes them. They also have a wonderful staff especially the lady at the bar, Christine. She is wonderful. Good drinks too; not juiced or watered down. The burgers are good BUT the cheese included is processed (or at least the ones we had were processed). I had half a burger left from the day before and after heating it up in the toaster oven, it did not even budge or melt... and it felt like plastic. Walked into the original Donovan's Irish Pub on Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside on a cold February night. Past the bar a dining room welcomed me with a blazing log fire, making the room so cozy & warm. Sat in a booth and our waitress Ann Marie approached. The choices for dinner looked delicious, but our eyes went right to the award winning hamburgers Donovan's are known for. Two were ordered, The Sebastian was stacked high with Swiss cheese and mushrooms and cooked to perfection. Gigantic onion rings the size of glazed donuts and as delicious were the accompaniment. Visited here during an apartment-scouting trip to Queens recently. I was not disappointed. My girlfriend and I both got burgers, both medium. Hers came out much more well-done than mine (as in, not medium), so mine was way juicier. It tasted fine. Nothing to write home about. The fries were a little too soft and not salted enough.
