I'd be hard pressed not to sing the praises of this classic Irish pub, especially since I think they've only gotten better over time. There was a time (see previous review from nearly a decade ago) where I thought Donovan's was good but not great. However, I've changed my tune over the last two years since they've shown so much improvement in the entire operation. They now have increased delivery, acceptance of credit cards, better overall service, and much better food. While I don't think their burgers are the *best* in NYC, I think they're certainly better than most places in neighborhood. They're not the dinky pseudo sliders of yesteryear, but a plump patty with a number of options. I don't remember the Wisconsin burger (mac and cheese) a decade ago, but in 2020 it's as indulgent as any burger I've had. I appreciate the bleu cheese burger has a nice small cheese wedge of bleu and the bacon cheeseburger is always a reliable option. More importantly, when I ask for medium rare, it comes out as such. Though the Irish options may be limited, what they do offer is certainly up to part with the Irish standard of Woodside. Folks might be crazy for the burgers or appetizers, I think their shepherd's pie, when cooked well, can be underrated. I would also say their fish and chips are sizeable, portion wise. The bartenders are a fun bunch and I think they've done a good job with getting food out rather quickly. The latter also applies to their delivery as well, which has been a breeze thus far. When this pandemic is over, I plan on going in for a nice pint of Guinness and a juicy burger. read more

An everyman's Queens classic if there ever was one. Around a decade ago the prognosis of this place wasn't looking too good. It was showing it's age in all the wrong ways and the weary proprietors seemed to be long past the point of caring. It was a grim depressing scene. Well low and behold two old regulars stepped up to the place and brought it' spruced it up and updated it while retaining all the old school charm and character and restored the place to it's past glory as a beloved neighborhood institution. While I can't say the burger ranks as a contender for my personal "best in the city", it is reliably satisfying and runs the gamut from very solid to excellent on any given day. The menu is rounded it with a likewise reliably solid mix of your standard American and Irish leaning pub standards from poppers and wings to pot roast to pot pies and fish and chips. Hands down the best..my family has been coming here since the 70"s. Had many parties here service and food is always top notch. Potions are generous and you can't beat the prices. We come from Brooklyn to eat here at least once a month. Always get the baked clams, they are overstuffed and delicious. Fried shrimp and crab cake dinners are so good better than we've had at seafood restaurants. For an Irish pub they make an amazing chicken parm. And tonight I strayed from my usual and tried a special, a pork shank that was fall off the bone tender. Burgers and French onion soup are the known staples here and they perfected both. When I moved to Woodside, the first thing my parents said was "you have to go to Donovan's." We're lucky enough to live a few blocks from this Woodside staple. Cozy, convenient, and friendly staff make it one of our go tos. Top foods in my opinion: the burger (I love the Woodsider), Shepard s pie, chicken pot pie, and wings (either boned or boneless - both amazing). Plenty of delicious apps and sides to share as well. They have several good beers on tap, but you need to get yourself a Guinness here. A proper pour and they pour a lot, so it's always fresh. The staff are so welcoming and the interior gives you a good pub feeling. Love this spot! PS - open mic night on the 3rd Thursday of every month is a great time. This is caddy corner to St. Sebastian's parish church and across the street from the school by the same name. Our arch rival growing up competing for math & spelling bees in the Brooklyn Queens Diocese, lol I used to have a love- not so love relationship with this parish until now as an adult I have recently become fond of the neighborhood having been born & raised in the Astoria Ditmars parish of Immaculate Conception, aka "ÏMMAC". Across from this pub is my grandparents pharmacy & after 60 years Zachary's is still there. My first time ever visit & happy to learn it is awarded the best burger in Queens. Walked in and it felt like I was going back in time. There was some women gathering near the front at the bar, waiting for their other friends to show up for a lovely lunch in the dining hall near the fireplace. It was just one of those days you needed a fire. So of I had to try the burger and it was spectacular as I waited. A couple came in from the city just for the burger and they treated me to one of their big clans as they always have them as an appetizer and take another one for the road after their wonderful meal I was so nice to sit in the church across the street for a moment, reflecting on how this neighborhood has changed, grown adapted and still flourishing. read more

This was my second time trying Donovan's and there won't be a third. First time I tried the burger, touted as the best in Queens, I ordered it medium, and the burger was well done and dry. I've had way better burgers in Queens, there's a place 2 blocks away that is absolutely phenomenal, not going to name drop but it's the obvious choice to go for a burger in the area. I said I'd give this place a second chance because it has a ton of reviews and maybe the burger I had was an off night for them. After reading reviews I saw the shepherds pie and chicken pot pie was mentioned quite a few times. So me and three friends came back, we ordered the shepherds pie, biscuit crusted chicken pot pie, chicken parm, wings and the garlic bread with mozzarella and prosciutto. We came on a Saturday evening, place was nicely busy and had live music, we got seated right away thought the beginning of a good night. Too bad that wasn't the case. Our apps (wings, garlic bread) took forever to come out and the our mains took close to an hour to receive. The garlic bread with mozz and prosciutto had no garlic taste at all, the buffalo wings were good. The shepherds pie was a huge disappointment, it's as if they forgot to add salt to the dish, it was a bland, mushy dish of what tasted like broken up burger meat with peas and carrots and mashed potato's. My step mom makes a killer shepherds pie, and this was the complete opposite. The "biscuit crusted" chicken pot pie, was not crusted at all, the crust was soft and blended in with the filling giving it no added texture contrast between the 2. The chicken parm I could've made better at home. We all agreed this was not a good meal, we left half the shepherds pie and chicken pot pie. The best item out of everything we ordered were the buffalo wings. Unfortunately will not be coming back here. read more

Came here for a burger and decided to takeout. It was about what i expected as an oldstyle pub with some tvs up. The staff was surprisingly nice so maybe that's why i went with the 4 stars. Anyway I went with the swiss cheese and mushroom burger which came with fries but i decided to go with sweet potato fries. **Delivery Review** Been meaning to try this longstanding pub forever - a staple along Roosevelt Avenue doling out some of the best bar food in the area. Delivery window is around 40 minutes which isn't too bad. Ordered "The Wisconsin" Burger ($14) to go along with a batch of Mozzarella Sticks ($9). Burger includes a perfectly cooked patty, a large dollop of macaroni and cheese, and a side of potato wedges. Despite having to add my own sauce (this is fine), the burger is fantastic. Patty is juicy and the mac on top wasn't overwhelming. Potato wedges are cooked just right with a balanced amount of salt on top. Mozzarella sticks are six to an order, thick cut and well-breaded. Overly salty in my opinion, though that dissipates when dunking into the marinara sauce. Four and a half rounded to five for probably getting the best burger in the neighborhood. Hopefully get to try this place in person when things get back to normal. read more

The negatives - the French fries where were thick cut and mostly soggy. The onion rings were 80% batter, doughy, and soft. Donovan's is a place that is easy to take for granted. It has been in existence, pretty much in the same form, for my entire life. I haven't been in years, but meeting up with a good friend we decided it was a good time to check in on Donovan's and see how things are doing... We grab a couple of perfectly poured Guinnesses as we look over and discuss the menu considering options such as the Lil' Shepherd's Pie and the various styles of burgers. We settle on an order of the Firehouse Wings to start which are vinegary, spicy hot, juicy, meaty drumettes (not drumsticks according to my friend Ben) and wings. Caution! The heat slowly builds so they will catch you - burns so good! Although there are many options for toppings such as chipotle mayo, jalapeno, peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc. we both settle on relatively simple bacon cheeseburgers - my friend adds raw onion to his and I keep it plain. I hate to overhype a burger in this Instagram age of stacked monstrosities covered with mac and cheese, food coloring, fruity pebbles or whatever looks good on camera because the beauty of Donovan's burger is in its simplicity. The burger is a thick juicy patty with a bit of char, nicely seasoned with the bun, american cheese and bacon tying it all together. Just fantastic.
