Traveling through and was so excited to get to towns with seafood. I wanted to love it but I didn't. I had the 1/2 fried shrimp & 1/2 etoufee. I've got to say I wasn't impressed. The shrimp were like popcorn shrimp and some weren't deveined which is a big turn off for me. The etoufee wasn't hot. Hubby got the regular fried shrimp which looked like any "fried shrimp" meal should look. He was kind enough to switch shrimp with me, though some of those weren't deveined. Flavor was average at best. He had grilled corn on the cob which he said was just ok, should know it's not corn season yet. The Mac & cheese was pretty tasty with a spicy kick. It was obvious I didn't eat any of the etoufee but the waitress never asked if there was an issue. The ambience was nice. The women's bathroom was clean. I'll start with service...delightful! Our server was Callie and I can't say enough nice things about her. Also the seating hostess was very pleasant. The food...abysmal! The chargrilled oysters had no butter sauce just hard dry cheese, the gumbo was like frozen shrimp, the hamburger steak is my fave from the Dons on Veterans Blvd but I asked for it not to have the cheese inside and of course it came with cheese and it was burned...I got the mashed potatoes and broccoli neither were edible. The server was nice enough to not charge for the meal. I cannot recommend this place which is a shame we love to support local. Big time disappointment! read more

I stopped in here for the first time for a late lunch/early dinner on a Thursday and since I was alone, the hostesses politely asked me if I would like to sit at the bar. I am leery of getting good food service when at a bar, but since it wasn't busy, I decided to try it out. I was not disappointed. Both bartenders were super nice, attentive and even welcoming. Since it was my first time, I requested assistance with my order from one of the bartenders. She recommended the Fourchon, so that is what I ordered. The Green Beans had real bacon and onions and were tasty and delicious. I really enjoyed them. The Fish Filet filled the plate up nicely, and had a wonderfully crunchy crust that kept it from getting soggy from the Lump Crab Cream Sauce on top which was a delicious counterpoint to the huge piece of fish. I wasn't too impressed with the Hushpuppies - they were too small and hard and not flavorful enough and I was disappointed in the Grits because I love Grits and was really looking forward to tasting Don's take on them. However, they were too wet, soggy, gummy and the topping was barely differentiated from the Grits underneath because it was wet and soggy too. Worst of all, it had a weird aftertaste. I couldn't even make myself finish eating them and I've been trained to clean my plate. Lol! I would definitely eat here again, and even order the same thing, but I would sub in a different side for the Grits. Since this restaurant was conveniently located right in front of my hotel and was so delicious, I returned the following Monday. I ordered the Catfish Acadian and got a side of Macaroni & Cheese. The Catfish was seasoned well, was a good portion, and tasted very good. Not as good as the first fish dish I ate, but very good for what it was. The Macaroni & Cheese was some of the best I have eaten in a long time and the portion was large enough to be satisfying instead of leaving you dissatisfied. The Macaroni & Cheese alone was enough to keep me coming back regularly. Lol! Two days later, on a Wednesday, I was back. I ordered the Cajun Ravioli and the Macaroni & Cheese. I asked the waitress if the Crawfish Cream Sauce was as good as the Jumbo Lump Crab Sauce I had already tried and she offered to sub it in for me. The Ravioli was delicious, but the Jumbo Lump Crab Cream Sauce definitely made that dish. Since it was individual bites, it could actually easily be a shareable Appetizer for a couple. The next day, on Thursday, I was already back again. This time I got the Grilled Shrimp Tacos and the Macaroni & Cheese. The Tacos were delicious and I would definitely order them again. The next day, on Friday, I was back. Clearly, at this time, I have leveled up to "regular" status. I ordered the Classic Cheeseburger. It was large and delicious. It's starting to blur now because I can't remember if I ordered Macaroni & Cheese this time. Lol! The next day, on Saturday, I ordered the Ribeye with Macaroni & Cheese. I ordered the Steak medium and it was cooked correctly and was tasty and delicious and even though I couldn't eat it all, I definitely ate the leftovers! Throughout all of my visits, I only sat at a table twice. The rest of the time, I felt so welcome at the bar, I sat there. All of the hostesses were friendly and welcoming and my servers were good at their jobs and took care of me in a timely manner. I never had to wait too long for my food and it was always served hot. On top of all of that, you can even grab a peppermint on the way out. Needless to say, I definitely recommend this place, and as far as I can tell, as long as you order Macaroni & Cheese for your Side, you can't go wrong! Lol! Happy eating. read more

Great service. Crawfish bisque is my go-to app. Jacked up oysters were nice, but regular chargrilled would have hit the spot. Always wish fish platter had more food for the price, but it is nice to not have to-go box issue as well. Went to Don's last night for dinner/drinks. We sat at the bar. Got the fried shrimp dinner. When it arrived, it was a little over cooked. Danielle, the manager, quickly took it back to the kitchen and appeared in a bit with new shrimp. Love it when a restaurant fixes an issue quickly like that. Went on to have a yummy dinner which was very good. Our friend got the fried shrimp/fish dinner and asked that her fish come out very thin, which it did, and she said it was delicious. The food is average at best. We chose this place based on reviews and were disappointed. We're tourist from out of state & have had excellent food in LA, so perhaps we were expecting more of a good thing. Our group ordered several dishes & appetizers. The grilled & jacked-up oysters were really good, as well as the shrimp & grits, but overall the food was very salty and steak over cooked. This is our first time here. In lieu of it being Valentine's Day and Covid ...we had good service from Chase. Parking is plentiful. We came after the lunch rush around 2 pm. Our bread was good and the spinach dip my hubby liked. My hubby got the shrimp tacos. He says the fried shrimp tasted old as compared to the BR location. He raced about the BR location but thought these tacos were just mediocre. My friend ordered the Ravioli. She said it was good and the only thing that made it Cajun was the crawfish cream sauce on top. The ravioli itself was fried and underwhelming. My meal was even more underwhelming. The seafood combo had very little on the plate. My entire dish tasted old and cold. Even the fries were undercooked. My catfish pieces were soo thin and small that it was over cooked. The only thing I liked on this plate was the shrimp. My fried oysters were soggy when I picked it up. I felt like they just fried up a bunch of food at the same time and served it instead of making it to order. My étouffée was also cold. I'm not sure what that was about. Overall I would say my meal was not as enjoyable as it might it could have been. Maybe it was just a bad day. I called Don's and asked about the issues on the bill. Arthur told me their cashier software was attacked by Russian malware and they don't know what happened. Yes he actually said this. Don's is located on a side street off Hwy 190 in Covington, nestled between some office buildings. Watch the 190 traffic, as you can miss your turn and end up in an endless loop of U turns. My co-workers and local friends are indifferent about this place. No one hates it, but it never comes to the top of their preferred lunch/ dinner spots unless we have out of town guests who want to try the local flavor. I've only had lunch here, but everything has been good. I've had the shrimp poboy, seafood gumbo, and fried catfish. I didn't cut my mouth on the sourdough bread and the shrimp was fresh and juicy in the poboy. The fried food wasn't overly dry nor greasy. The side salads are crispy and refreshing. The service is pretty prompt during the lunch service. Overall, this works as a solid lunch spot in Covington. It's quick, easy, and casual enough for a good weekday lunch to introduce out of town folks to Louisiana cuisine. read more
