This is the way every shop should be. Friendly, efficient, knowledgeable and honest. Mine was a big repair, full replacement of the rear end of a '95 Land Cruiser, meaning replacing, and partially reassembling the rear axle and the locker system. Great for buying new tires (and for getting an honest opinion about whether you actually NEED new tires), for getting old tires patched, and for friendly answers to even the most stupid tire-related questions. I managed to let almost all the air out of one of my tires while trying to refill it at a gas station, and Don's refilled it for free. My daughter's car started giving her false alarms about her anti-lock braking system (if I recall correctly) right before she had to drive back to college in Los Angeles, and not only did Tony fit her into his full schedule, he told her she should pull over and call him if she had any concerns on her drive. Dark-haired woman at front desk (mid-30's to early 40's) was so *pointlessly* irritated, angry and unpleasant, all for the crime of asking a neutral question (regarding details of the device they were doing in my car). I told one of the technicians about it; his reaction was a knowing roll of his eyes (indicating this wasn't anything new to him) and he apologized: "Ya she's like that; I'm really sorry--can I make it up to you somehow?" Very nice man and good business sense to offer something, but I just can't give my business to a place where every time I walk in, I have no way of knowing whether this individual may be having a bad day. Perhaps she puts on a friendly face most of the time, but I would never willingly subject myself to another uselessly stressful exchange while also patronizing their business. read more

In general I'm happy to have a good local tire shop that seems to know it's stuff. My recent experience had two problems: 1) I came this time to Don's because of a defective Michelin Premier A/S tire. They processed this as a warranty return, but I never got the refund, and Don's never followed up. 2) I needed to change a tire. The lug nuts were so tight I could not do so.... my torque wrench only reads up to 250 ft pounds, and the nuts were far tighter than that. #2 is a real safety hazard, and could have left me stuck by the side of a highway. Ask them to hand torque your lug nuts, if you care about preserving the ability to change a tire roadside later. read more

They didn't give me any push back at all!! Thank you!! Ashely helped me out and told me that the car will be ready in a 45 to a hour. The waiting room is pretty standard a bench or two and some chairs. But there's plenty of places with in walking distance They really have a great system in place for them The shop runs really smooth with appointments and walk ins. Watching vehicles coming in and out of the garage for repairs or simple tire maintenance. I've noticed many cars come in and out for a wheel alinement. After getting a new suspension installed, I need to get an alignment. I called Don's, got a fair estimate and appointment from cheery, Angela. When I arrived, she was decked out in Bridgestone racing attire, greets everyone with a warm smile with incredible humor. Angela told me they were 20 minutes behind and then yelled (with humor) to the mechanic to hurry up. She said it will be done on time (2 hours) as promised. After my two hour bar crawl (see below yelps), my car was done. Angela continued to entertain every customer. A fun and honest place to spend your money. My only experience with this place was when my Prius was running low on an unknown tire location. I drove up and ran in to ask for some help. The front lady was super helpful and went and got a mechanic to check out my problem. He went and gauged each tire and filled them all up to the recommended standard psi and located the tire that was having issues. And that was it! I have a vintage 1990 Westfalia Vanagon camper van and I've been coming here since it was recommended by Buslab for any kind of tire work on classic vans. Service at the front and back of the house is always awesome. The ladies in the front are so friendly and easy to work with. I was amazed that they were able to special order me some 215/65/r16 Nokian Rotiiva AT XL tires so quickly and cheaper than prices I found online. I was expecting a backorder as it's a pretty specific all-terrain tire that isn't so common but they were able to get them in from their warehouse for a NEXT DAY install without my even requesting such a quick timeframe. Ok here's the good news. They have good prices on replacing Tpms for my Lexus RX. Made my appointment and I knew it would take two hours.. Well after three hours still waiting , found out they were having problems and needed more time. Ok so Angela said let's get this done. Don's is the best. We got our all-weather tires from them a year or so ago, and they've been great, the service was great. But we'd still been taking our car to the dealership where we bought the car. Fast forward, it started to be that the dealership (whose name shall remain anonymous, alas), that the car would come back with something new wrong. We were about to go on a road trip with an impending blizzard coming, and we needed to troubleshoot a vibration in the front axle. The crew at Don's was so helpful - they wanted to first do a wheel alignment before jumping into a $1000 repair. We ended up needing to do more work than just the alignment, but honestly, I just appreciate a good honest shop. My dad owned his own mechanic garage back in the day, and it was a good one. Noticed that air was leaking out of the valve on my front tire on the way to work. Concerned that it might go flat and worried also that I might be late for work, I stopped at Don's tires. Great price and value given bay area. I would come again. Knocking off 2 stars because they finished the job without letting me know that alignment specs are out of spec. Saw it after I paid which is on me. To their credit, they made comments as to why they couldn't do it, but odd that on stock car they couldn't get it to align in spec. Approximately 20% of values were red. Either machine is not calibrated or tech was lazy to try and see what is adjustable. read more

Nevertheless, I wanted to weigh in with my FIVE STARS because I had such a nice experience there recently. I had a flat tire in Berkeley and was in between making deliveries. It was a busy morning for them and I didn't have an appointment. They really helped me out with a quick patch job, and I was very grateful to be able to stay on schedule. More importantly, there was a sincere, human connection made that day. It is so great that they have remained a family-owned, independent business devoted to the neighborhood.
