My family now calls me Mr Copperfeild because I can make them disappear like it's a magic. They're not wrong. The kids get sucked in by the oddities. Plastic toys jammed into the top of the doughnuts like bait. They never eat those doughnuts. They just want the toy, then they circle back and eat whatever I bought for myself. It's a long con and I fall for it every single time. The only thing that kills the mood is the parade of "therapy" animals people drag inside. If you have a dog you think it's a person. My two year old disagrees. To her it's a giant unpredictable creature. To me it's something that just stuck its nose in another dog's backside and is now sniffing around my breakfast. I walked in with the most boring, responsible plan imaginable: buy a water bottle. That's it. Quick in-and-out. No plot twists. But then I saw the menu. Not a normal menu. A "you could study for finals off this thing" menu. Like... why does this place have so many options? And why do I suddenly feel emotionally attached to them? So I left... but the menu haunted me. Like a snack-related intrusive thought. I came right back and ordered a toasted everything bagel sandwich with egg, bacon, and cheese, and I'm telling you right now: it was unreal. The bagel had that perfect toast, the bacon was doing what bacon is meant to do (carry society), and the whole thing tasted like somebody in the kitchen actually cares about your happiness. Also: this sandwich was massive. Like "this isn't breakfast, this is a full side quest" massive. And I'm a big guy, so if I'm saying it was huge, it's not a joke. Then the wild part: it was ready in five minutes. Five. I've waited longer for my brain to load a single thought in the morning. I took one bite and immediately thought, Oh no... I have to bring one home. So yeah, I ordered a second one for my significant other because this is the kind of food you don't keep to yourself unless you want bad karma. Each sandwich was about $10 +tax + tip, which was about $13 and honestly for the size and quality? Worth it. Easily. But what really made me smile was the vibe: the owner was incredibly kind, and the walls had photos of patrons over the years plus pictures celebrating her Cambodian heritage. You can tell this place has been here for a while and has that "neighborhood gem" energy, like it's been quietly making people's days better for years. So yeah. I came in for water. If I want a decent donut AND a great breakfast sandwich, this is my go-to. My main issue with donuts in the morning is feeling grossed out with oily, sad dough that makes all the sweetness and calories not worth it. This is the complete opposite of that - these donuts are fluffy without all the grease. The apple fritters are the best I've had with a crisp exterior and aren't too sweet despite the healthy amount of glaze coating the top. The bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast croissant is surprisingly delightful and is a pretty decent size given the price. My only complaint is that the peppers served on the side were unbelievably spicy the second time I got it but I'm sure they are a welcome treat for someone else. This place makes me happy They make Cinnamon Rolls real ones. They come straight out off the backing pan. They also use cream cheese. It gets better, they have them, they sale them, they come is these perfect little boxes. Its just happy. Its so easy to get your cinna fix here. They do have a few tables and chairs if you want to narf there, but its mostly to go. No public restrooms or places to wash your hands. I've gotten donuts from many places in San Diego and I think Donut Factory is my favorite donut shop, hands down. First off -- I only get donuts on Sunday. Don't ask why because I don't know. Sometimes I skip a week or two. But I like to go on Sunday and the last time I went to Donut Factory I went late and didn't realize they closed at 3. It was a few minutes past 3 but the nice lady let me enter. I always get two different types of donuts and then split them with friends. Sometimes the nice lady puts free donut holes into my bag without my knowledge. It's a sweet surprise when I get home. The lady who works there is super nice. Donuts were lovely and there was still a lot to choose from late in the day. My croissant sandwich with turkey, egg and tomato was really good. I also had a Thai tea smoothie with boba. The tea flavor was excellent and I can tell the boba was made skillfully. The boba was silky soft and still warm from just being cooked. There was a great diversity of items to choose from in addition to donuts, including croissant/bagel sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and a fridge of drinks. This place SLAPS. This local family ran donut shop is my go to for donuts and cinnamon rolls. I'm a cinnamon roll aficionado and these are always so homemade and delicious. The thing that really makes their cinnamon rolls amazing is the fact you can taste the butter in each bite. Their donuts are also phenomenal. This place has perfected the light and fluffy donut consistency. Every time you rip one in half it's pull apart-ness is like a fluffy hug. I'm a long John fan so that or the chocolate twists are always my go to. They have 15 donut holes for 2.99, amazing smoothies (we got the banana strawberry with boba - yes they have boba), and breakfast bagels. They also have numerous drinks inside including coffee, energy drinks, sodas, etc. Parking sucks around here but thankfully this shopping center has a lot. Solid donut spot, hard to go wrong with an apple fritter which was awesome as was the cinnamon roll with the frosting. They warm it up too which made it nice and gooey. Outside of the cinnamon roll was a little hard but inside was the money section. They get the apple fritters down to a science, which is my wife's favorite! I personally love the maple donuts and crumb. You can tell they make their donuts right, as they are light and fluffy and don't leave you with a heavy, greasy feeling. A very good donut! I've been twice so far, and the texture of their donuts is what keeps me coming back.

1.75 stars Several months ago, I sampled most of the independently owned donut shops in the Hillcrest/North Park/Normal Heights/Downtown region, and this is one of the few in which I remember enough details to write about. As a control, the same type of donut was sampled: glazed. I've found that glazed donuts were fairly good predictors of how the rest of a shops' donuts will taste. After all, most donuts are based on the same dough and consistency of the classic glazed. Cake donuts are an exception of course, but I don't enjoy cake donuts anyway. In addition to the glazed, other types of donuts were also sampled provided that they piqued my curiosity. * Glazed (1.5/5) - Good news: It was appropriately semi-sweet. Bad news: It was also noticeably bitter. * Apple fritter (3.5/5) - This was your bog standard apple fritter. Fortunately, the standard apple fritter is delicious: crispy on the outside, a dense yet moist inside, seductively aromatic apple and cinnamon, and finished with a wonderfully sweet glaze with vanilla undertones. This is why I love apple fritters. * Oreo and frosted cake (N/A) - When I asked if this was essentially a glazed donut but with frosting and Oreos, I was told it was. It was not. It was a cake donut. I bet it was the language barrier. Interestingly, it seemed that apple fritters were a mostly dummy-proof donut as I didn't encounter any bad apple fritters among the bunch of shops I sampled from. Variability was instead found in the more basic glazed donut. Unfortunately, Donut Factory's fared the worst at the bottom of the scale. If the shop's name is anything to go by, perhaps a shift from quantity to quality will prove beneficial over the long-run. read more
