Came as a party of two on Sunday around 11am, waited about 15-20 min in line before ordering, though we didn't mind at all bc they offered us champagne and cherry soda in line! From ordering to actually getting our food at the table took about 10 minutes. We ordered: Muffuletta croissant: 4.6/5 for me (only bc I'm not a huge fan of olives yet somehow still loved it) and 4.8/5 from my husband. Great savory pastry with LOTS of filling. Absolutely delicious, would order again. Almond croissant: 5/5 for me, 4.7/5 from hubby (he's not a huge sweets fan but said this was the best one he's ever had)- I am a HUGE almond croissant fan, and this blows others out the water. *Experience from pre-order on a Wednesday ~10am* I pre-ordered 2 items (vanilla knot and almond croissant) around 10:10am, with expected completion at 10:42am. A few of the savory croissants were already sold out online. We arrived promptly, but to spare details, it wasn't ready until 11am...so we waited, watching people who ordered in-person receive their orders before us. A gentleman was also waiting for his order with expected pickup at 11am, but he didn't receive it until around 11:20am. After receiving the order, we sat down and immediately dug into the pastries. The Tahitian vanilla knot ($6) was alright, smaller than anticipated. The first piece I ripped off tasted a bit dry/stale. The center was just shy of warm, with the dough layers glued together by the semi-melted butter. It reminded me of a kouign amann that was a bit too doughy, and baked at the wrong temp, resulting in less than desirable layers. Almond croissant (~$12) looked great, but the flavor and texture were lackluster. It had been toasted, but there was a delay from getting the order out. As a result, the pastry had cooled down, and the split center was soggy from the frangipane cream. The two edges of the croissant that retained crispiness shattered, but the remaining croissant was a wet chore to get down. The interior and exterior seating is bridged by garage doors, which had a great indoor/outdoor feel, perfect for SD weather. Dine-in customers are served items on cutting boards and quarter sheet pans, which give it a heftier feel. Employees working are so friendly, albeit they seemed a bit stressed. It felt like they were understaffed (cashier said they only had one person in the back prepping pre-orders). Empty trays, boards, and cups laid around for a longgg time (maybe +45 min) before getting bussed. Feel like it'd be better if there was a dedicated bus-person, maybe a few more people working in the back, especially at these prices. I understand the ingredients are top notch, but sure the margins aren't THAT thin. Not sure if my experience is reflective of every pre-order, or just from that day. I was super intrigued to stop by this bakery because of their creative menu. Located in a corner near a park, the bakery was bright with a lot of windows and seating inside and out. The cashier was super helpful when I asked for the everything croissant and I didn't see it on display. He said they just freshly baked some so I was super excited to try! Everything croissant 4/5. I loved how hot and crispy the croissant was, but it was extremely buttery! I was holding the croissant with a napkin and it was soaked in butter within a few minutes. This is a cute bakery with garage doors and a nice outside area for seating that specializes in croissants and sourdough. My friends and I ordered an assortment of croissants, morning bun and different flavors of the sourdough on a board with homemade butter and jelly. For me, the morning bun was too sweet and not soft enough, and not enough cinnamon. Also the chocolate croissant was too crispy for my taste. The sourdough board was pretty good, but the Lao gruyere flavor was a little spicy if you are sensitive to spice, and the loaf with olives was very salty. They actually were out of a lot of their specialty croissants by the time we came here around 11 a.m. Service was great. So so so so good. Visited from the Bay Area and I already know I need to come back ASAP! Came on a Tuesday morning, line was short, service was excellent, and food was delicious. The inside was nice and clean, and our table outside was perfect for the weather, facing a park so we got to dog watch too lol. The carnitas croissant was probably the best savory pastry I've had in a long time! The Tahitian vanilla knot was super sweet, which was just to my liking. The pastries struck me as being more soft than anything else. Not a hugely impressive flavor profile or crunch factor, but certainly quite buttery and enjoyable to eat. It is quite a bummer to miss out on items just because they happen to not be ready at the time of ordering. If they continue to make items throughout opening times and not completely sell out for the day, you should be able to order something that's not necessarily ready at the moment but currently baking. Fabulous bakery! The croissants are so soft inside and perfectly crunchy on the outside. The savory Bibimbap croissant is huge and so tasty. I would honestly say it's addicting and enough for 4 people! We are with a group of 7. Food is great but the coffee is even better. It's in a former garage with windows everywhere. The seating could be more comfortable but it was passable. The tables and chairs are very small. The chairs are more like outdoor patio chairs. The actual outdoor patio has wood picnic tables. Clearly it's a bougie place with good food and a relaxed atmosphere. It is a great novelty. The service was good. The employees are nice with a great attitude. Overall, an okay but underwhelming experience, especially considering the high price point. I liked that they allow dogs. I also appreciated the self-serve water and sparkling water station. Drink - 7 oz Double Valrhona Mocha $5.89: 7.5/10 The mocha was very good. You could really taste the high-quality Valrhona chocolate, which definitely carried the drink. The coffee itself was just okay. Pastry - Signature Plain Croissant $8.62: 7.1/10 The signature croissant was fine, but not really memorable. It was quite big, light and slightly crisp on the outside, but I didn't get the intense buttery flavor others mentioned. The inside wasn't as soft and moist as I expected, a little dry. I also picked up a hint of coconut, which isn't something I really want in a croissant. Could it be because I came closer to closing? But still, I would expect it to deliver. Value & Experience: I did a day trip from OC and put the croissant in my schedule because I thought it was worth visiting. At $8.62, I was expecting something life-changing, better than the croissants I've had in Paris, but I guess not. Heck, even a croissant from Angelina Paris is not this expensive and tastes better. Izola is my favorite spot for croissants. The concept has evolved over the years; however, I think it's the best place in California for croissants. The difference is the high-quality French butter and their attention to detail. You see all you need to know when you take a cross section of one of their croissants. There are just so many layers. I've been here many times since they opened in 2020. At that time, during COVID, they were famously bringing croissants down in baskets that were lowered from their apartment building. They've now upgraded and grown into to this beautiful space with communal seating. I wanted to come in to try their bibimbap croissant; however, I left home in Long Beach too late, and they were sold out by the time we came in at 10:45am on a Saturday. I got a butter croissant, which I think it's the best way to appreciate the quality of their buttery croissants. Not to say that their everything seasoning croissant isn't great - they're just more garlic and salt forward. Another favorite is their tahitian vanilla knot, which glimmers with their glaze and bountiful black flecks of vanilla bean. Over the years, they've amped up the vanilla flavors by a factor of ten. The glaze is simply addictive. I really look forward to when they release their brown butter caramel knots, which are reportedly coming soon. My next visit will be in May, so I'll have to wait till then. Overall, I haven't found a better croissant outside of France. Croissants are around $9 for a butter or everything seasoned one. It costs $6 for their sweet knots. $16-18 for their "speciality savory croissants", (eg: muffuletta, carnitas croissant, bibimbap croissant) which are basically sandwiches. Quality is undoubtedly reflected in the price, but I highly recommend it! I think the reason for that is because it's evident that Izola spares no expense on high quality ingredients. Izola's new location has a beautiful, expansive open architecture with tall glass windows on three sides. The roll up garage doors open onto the patio which overlooks a newly built park. The space has an art-deco urban loft feel with rough concrete floors and simple treatments. The chocolate almond croissant was excellent. It has a delightful crunchy layered croissant exterior but inside it is chewy, moist - and filled with a soft, gooey almond paste... it does have almond chunks in the paste but it stays far away from that less desirable dry gritty mealy effect that plagues so many almond croissants. The chocolate is layered in at the top - and hits the mark for a refined, delicious dark chocolate. All in all - it really is an exquisite pastry! The latte is mid. The beans they use are not as fresh as I'd prefer. But they don't bill themselves as a coffee shop so I'll give them a passion the coffee. Izola - i long for you to create a cinnamon roll. Everything still stands about what I've said in my last review (read that one first if you want a full rundown of my thoughts on Izola), butttt I finally tried the Tahitian Vanilla Knot. The people who raved about it were right. It's so simple yet delicious, a good amount of sweetness and the vanilla flavor comes through well. You can see the small flecks of the vanilla beans throughout the pastry. My partner got the hot americano, and I know coffee is such a personal preference thing for taste, but he didn't really light it. He said it was too bitter, it tasted like a dark roast and he prefers something a little lighter. The heaters outside are always a nice touch and the views in the early morning are great with the early sun rising. It's very bright though with all of the glass and the reflections of the sun beaming right back into your eyes, so either side you choose to sit at will have the light directly into your face which makes it a little hard to see. Downtown is always a deterrent for trying out places especially with the tough parking situation, but if you wake up early enough and feel motivated to make the journey out here get the Tahitian Vanilla Knot. Oh wow! What a wide array of croissant selections on the counter!!!! I really wish I could eat more than I could. But after drinking some coffee and water, the bread very quickly expanded and I can't eat much more. PLAIN CROISSANT was flaky, airy and very yummy. Got offered butter and/or jam and we asked for butter. We didn't get to eat the butter but holy moly, they gave us a mini stick wrapped in parchment and stapled to the bread box. Extra charge for the butter FYI. Butter was awesome!!! So glad their LATTE comes in a smaller size than 12 ounces. I think mine was 6 ounces which made it a bit stronger. The WINE PACHED PEAR CROISSANT looked absolutely delectable and it tasted like it too!!! The pastry was lightly coated in sugar so it made the bread part extra crispy and crunchy. The wine and pear aroma is giving nostalgia -- of what time in my life I don't know. But if you associate food with a memory, it means more --- which made my eating experience of this particular piece extra yummy! The pear was sitting on a light cheese (or super heavy creme) and everything was balanced. The portion is large too by the way. Good for two people, really. The UGLY BITS was a large piece of bread made of the leftover croissant dough mixed with cinnamon and sugar. A great snacking and sharing piece. Lasted days. But maybe it lasted days because we also had to get through the other pieces. You can order online for pickup which is a separate line, or you can line up and order at the counter. They have nice displays of various pastries that you can look at before you order which is greatly helpful. I adore restaurants and establishments that continue to promote creativity and innovation through seasonal menu items, this place gets that gold star in my book. Split the beef bibimbap between three for a small snack and it was great. The presentation was beautiful and the croissant was masterfully laminated and baked. The flaky layers were soft, not too crispy and just had a hint of butter smell and taste. I am not fond of a heavily buttered tasting croissant, so I typically stay away. It was a good surprise. The gochujang sauce was really the second favorite thing on the plate though, it was salty, sweet, umami and paired great with the croissant and lightly pickled cucumbers they add along. My only gripe was the beef tasted off, under seasoned or just not the freshest. And my friends agreed. The dining space is spacious, full of windows to let in the gorgeous sunshine that SD has to offer as well as seating indoors and outdoors. Izola does things differently and they're expensive but for a good reason in terms of how they treat their staff and the quality. The wait can be challenging at times but you can order ahead for pickup and they used to have an option to bring it out to you curbside if you called (not sure if that's still offered), and a pre order pickup line separate to the regular line. The carnitas croissant was the special this time and it was surprisingly so good, flavors on point and side of lime, onions and hot sauce too. The cortados were average but the pastries are the star. Seating: Inside seating, patio seating, and you're in a park so you can sit around that area. Room for large groups, pairs, and individuals. Vibes: Welcome to Downtown SD. A charming gem. You're a few clicks away from the Gaslamp, Petco Park, Quartyard, library, or the water. The spot itself is quite pleasant. A nice location where you feel you're in community with the people around you. A good place to socialize or get work done. I like they have live musicians performing from time to time. FOOD/DRINKS Bibimbap Croissant (Recommend): A lovely presentation making this exciting to enjoy. The bread was everything they hyped it as. Flaky, buttery and savory. Good balance of veggies, protein, and gochujang. Potion Drink (Recommend): It got me with its name. Visually fun and creative by leaving the ingredients in the drink. Beyond gimmicky it felt refreshing, fragrancy, and citrusy. I felt healthy with every sip. SERVICE Awesome! It was pretty busy and I felt the employees handled it very well - maintaining quick service and friendly delivery. TL;DR OVERALL 4 Stars. Awesome! Good food, great selections, and a pleasant ambiance. There are plenty of bakery spots but if you're in the area, this spot is certainly worth stopping by. We came just a bit before closing, and they were sold out of a decent number of pastries but still had some great options! We got the classic chocolate croissant and a wine-soaked pear croissant. They were both SO delicious - the wine soaked pear on a delicious mascarpone crème and flakey croissant was incredible. And the chocolate was exactly everything I hoped. I'd love to come back again earlier and try some of their more creative dishes! The prices are very steep, but I think they're plenty justified with the size of the pastries (we each only ate half). Service was very fast, our croissants were ready as soon as we found a place to sit! The bakery is in a standalone glass building, and was pretty warm inside on a warm day. They have some picnic tables outside as well. The crowd was thinning by the time we got there but I expect it gets pretty busy during peak times. read more

Picked up an online order that included a Bag of Misfits, plain and bibimbap croissants. All were amazing. The buttery, flaky croissants were heavenly. The bibimbap croissants was interesting. Realized later that I was supposed to pour the sauce on my pastry while eating it and also have the mini cucumbers as banchan ‍ Misfit bag had a smores pastry, a quarter oliva sourdough loaf, and two croissants beds that I ate with the French butter and Cherry preserves. Great deal for a low price. Love this bakery and have been going to it since they opened at their former location. The new location is great...bright and airy. At IZOLA, I don't feel like I'm walking into a typical bakery. The space is sculptural and intentional; the pastries presented in large wood slabs, almost like artwork. It reminds me of Gentle Monster, where you think you've stepped into an art exhibit before realizing it's an eyeglass store. Our orders: Muffuletta croissant (15.75) S'mores croissant (12.78): they bring and use a torch to crisp the marshmallow. Croissant shined through better on this one than the muffuletta. Izola Bakery in East Village, Downtown San Diego absolutely lives up to the recognition it's received. After hearing it was once ranked the #1 bakery in the U.S., I knew I had to try it -- and it did not disappoint. Everything is baked fresh daily, and you can truly taste the quality in every bite. The croissants are beautifully laminated with distinct, flaky layers and that rich Normandy butter flavor that's crisp on the outside and soft within. The s'mores croissant was easily one of the most memorable pastries I've had. A flaky butter croissant layered with brownie, graham crunch, and house-made chocolate marshmallow -- then melted tableside with a flame. It's indulgent without being overly sweet, and the textures are incredible. We also tried the cranberry pecan sourdough, served with butter, jam, and flaky salt. The toasted pecans and tart cranberries folded into the gentle sourdough made it simple but deeply satisfying. You can tell their bread program is just as strong as their pastries. The bakery itself has a modern, clean aesthetic, and there's always a sense of excitement because things sell out quickly. The croissant was buttery, soft, and perfectly flaky, and it paired surprisingly well with the rich, flavorful carnitas. A unique combination I didn't expect, but it really worked. The best bakery I've ever been to in my entire life. I can't stop raving about this spot to anyone that will listen. My friends and I decided to preorder and split the s'mores croissant, the salted caramel knot, and almond croissant. Everything here is so beautiful it hurts. They even bring out the pastries on cutting boards for you to split with your friends. We all decided to dine outdoors to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the beautiful San Diego weather. We unanimously agreed that the salted caramel knot was the best- the flavor was so savory and the gooey caramel went so well with the buttery flakiness of the knot. The s'mores croissant had a great texture due to the fluffy marshmallow, thicker chocolate, and amazing lamination of the croissant. The almond croissant was absolutely amazing and would make any French pastry chef proud, but I prefer to try pastries unique to each bakery when I travel. It's always a good day when it starts at Izola. We usually try to get here around 8am and that seems to beat the long lines. My husband and I, and even my out of town family, have been patrons for years now and the croissants, pastries and breads continue to be the best in town. I may even argue some of the best you can find anywhere across the globe. We recently took a trip to Paris and had a running joke about trying to find out how many croissants in the city taste as good as Izola and very few came close. We occasionally will do a quick pop in and do a to go order, but we prefer sitting at Izola to eat. They have live music on Saturdays and the staff is always so friendly to chat with.
