I really enjoyed this little joint. Its an overpriced breakfast diner that serves beer. The owner (or at least what I perceived as the owner) was a very friendly and personable guy. He was very helpful in directing me and my family around the area. The food was very standard breakfast items cooked perfectly. The ambiance of the location made me want to be a local and get my picture on the wall. Don't think I will ever have the opportunity to come back to Biscayne Key, but if I did, I would not hesitate coming back here for some steak and eggs. Atmosphere: It is a small place, so don't come with a large group. There is mostly seating at the "bar" on stools. The lady that waited on me was super nice and attentive. OK - food was fine but way over priced. $7.50 for a ham and cheese sandwich (and this was not a NYC deli style) with bad chips. Cans of coke were $2.50 each PuLeez! I can almost get an entire 12 pack for that. I understand rent is high there, I understand running a place is expensive...but this was just nothing special for big wad of cash (family of 4 - almost $50 lunch). They had signs everywhere saying CASH ONLY...but we failed to see them until we had ordered...so one of us had to go find a bank to get cash, so not only was it costly, it was very slow (taking away precious beach time). My friend and I found ourselves so bored with brunch choices in our C. Grove and South Beach hoods that we decided to head on over to Key Biscayne. We decided to see what the Donut Gallery had to offer after reading all the reviews. Much to this NYers delight, it is indeed a diner! For real diner. Now as folk mention, it's tiiiiiiiiiiny. In fact as you're circling that roundabout by the church looking for it, you'll be surprised to find it. FYI, it's tucked away in the strip mall sort of adjacent from the church roundabout. I ordered a veggie burger with lettuce, onions and an egg on top. Love an egg. Tasty and wonderful. My coffee was sort of weak and overall not very good. Diner cawfee should be good. That said I was enjoying the authentic as is vibe of the place so much, I didn't care. My friend ordered a poached egg and asked for a side of peanut butter for her toast. She was given a spoon with a fantastically huge scoop of PB...it was awesome. The family run, no frills scene was refreshing and very welcomed. Donut Gallery is a family owned restaurant and has been a staple of Key Biscayne life since I was born (and far before from my understanding). I grew up on Key Biscayne and the quick and tasty breakfast from Donut Gallery is hard to beat in a pinch - especially before a beach day. My personal favorite is the Ted Special (Bacon, Ham, Cheese, Tomato and Egg, served open face on an English muffin) with hash browns and a side of banana chocolate chip pancakes. They are pricey, but it is par for the course in Key Biscayne and still cheaper than any of the other breakfast options on the island. Their service is fast and you'll feel like part of the family while you sit on one of the stools and look over the photos on the wall. Its small and tightly packed inside, but the staff are warm, friendly, and the food is classic down home goodness. Its loud, crowded and a little expensive, but it works. My waitress, Lauri, somehow got our complicated order correct without even writing it down. My son's apple juice was taken away before he finished and replaced with a fresh bottle no charge. Its fun to watch the husband and wife owners/chef bark back and forth the orders and watch it all delivered with perfect choreography. Hmmmm, I've had way better (S&S diner). This place is friendly and the prices are very inexpensive. The food??? Its just okay. I had the burger with cheese (and bacon but they forgot the bacon), fries, and a small order of chicken wings. The Hubbs had the Spanish omelet with coffee. The burger was meh, the bun was super white and soft, the meat small, the condiments scarce. The cheese was good but could have been better with some pork on top. The fries were skinny and the chicken wings pre frozen and deep fried. These are some of my favorite foods and I was longing for a re-do afterward. My Baby's omelet was good. Nothing special. We probably will not be back since there so many other great places to eat in Miami, including my own house ;) read more

While visiting the Key and after recently reading a very good review of this diner in the Miami Herald we chose to visit the diner for breakfast @10 a.m. on 7/31/12. Unfortunately, a small crew was working with a chipping hammer on the walkway outside the diner when we arrived and the noise inside and out was unbearable. We went in anyway and sat down at the counter. The place is minuscule with seating at the counter and a few tiny wall-mounted tabletops, each with room for a couple of patrons. The mica used for the counter/table tops must date from the 60's and is quite ugly. In attendance were 3-4 ladies and one older man, all were welcoming. Being that the article mentioned the original owner was Cuban and that now the son was running the diner, my husband asked for a café con leche only to be told they did not sell café con leche but that he could have American coffee with lots of milk.....a total abomination for anyone who's used to café con leche. We've never heard of a diner run by a Cuban family that doesn't offer Cuban coffee or café con leche, this is a first for us. We found the prices on the breakfast menu extremely high but went ahead and ordered anyway since we were already there. Another writer was correct, breakfast at the Ritz-Carlton would have run the two of us over $60.00, but it would have been $60.00 well spent. The almost $20.00 we spent at this diner was wasted money. We chose what we felt was the least expensive option: $8 for a plate of one egg, 2 strips of bacon, grits and 3 pancakes. They charged separately for one cup of American coffee. At $8.00 for breakfast, one would expect coffee to be included! The egg and bacon were OK, the grits were watery, without a grain of salt and with a huge pat of margarine melting on top; we immediately removed the margarine. The pancakes, on a separate plate, also had a huge pat of melting margarine on top which we also proceeded to remove. The imitation maple syrup sits on the counter in a very large plastic container. At these prices, butter should be offered instead of margarine. Based on the longevity of the diner and the very high prices being charged, the owner should: (1) take some pride in the diner, show concern for his patrons and update the diner while using features that will keep it in whatever era he wants to keep it in (2) replace the dishwasher which has cruddy black mold on the door which was opened in front of us numerous times while the steam hit our area as we tried to eat (3) ask the waitress who speaks perfect English and who appears to be Puerto Rican to tone it down a bit...the place is too small for her loudness (4) get with it and offer Cuban staples such as pastelitos, Cuban coffee and café con leche (5) taste those grits and perhaps someone will season them correctly and make them creamy...not soup of grits. My husband and I, after experiencing the diner today, could not believe the 4 and 5 stars and glowing reviews awarded to this diner in Yelp by many patrons nor the Miami Herald review. Have you people lost your marbles? Charm? Where was the charm hiding? A little expensive? It's outrageously expensive for what it is and for what it offers. It's old, run-down, depressing, overpriced and the food stinks. We will never visit this diner again and couldn't wait to leave. This is why one cannot believe every review one reads. read more

Loved the feel of this diner and eating at the counter. I am also a fan since you can get breakfast all day (well, at least until they close at 3pm). I got the $7 breakfast that included one egg, one meat (bacon, sausage patty, or ham), hash brown or grits, and one pancake. My bacon was pretty fatty, but everything else was really good. As other reviewers mentioned, there are no donuts at the Donut Diner, and it is cash only, but there an ATM inside. It is a part of a shopping center and the sign overhead only says "diner," so it could be easy to miss if you are driving there. read more

My family and I decided to go to donut gallery for breakfast this morning. As we were sitting down at the counter my two small children complained that they were cold. I asked the gentleman at the counter if we could have the last table outside. From across the counter, the crass rude waitress, who had been YELLING at the kitchen staff since we walked in, didn't even look us in the eyes and YELLED at the top of her lungs that we couldn't sit outside because it was too hot for her! Shocked I asked if this was supposed to be comfortable for her or for her customers. She didn't like my question and continued to yell at us in front of our kids and the handful of customers that were in the diner. I went here a few weeks back for breakfast. The atmosphere is definitely that of a traditional diner. It felt like home because the staff is made up of a group of caring women that make you feel welcome. The food was ok, but what was best was the homey feeling of the place. My only complaint is that they do not accept credit cards. I ordered the breakfast special, but could only finish about half the pancakes. I also ordered orange juice but to my dismay, it was not naturally squeezed orange juice. I would suggest that they have natural juices... it would make it all the much better. It seems like it is a family place because most of the customers are known by name. In fact, when it is time to say goodbye even an "I love you" comes out from these cute women. Service was ok at best, the old guy was not very polite and with every request you felt as though you had asked him for his kidneys. The food was quick but tainted by the unmistakeable flavor of margarine. Pancakes came out with a generous helping of margarine on the side. I second what another reviewer said about this being possibly the cheapest breakfast you can get in all of Miami, - for the three of us, with upgrades and juices and coffees, our bill came out to $35 which is amazing.
