For years i have noticed this place, but came in sporadically. In the past whenever I had to wait at Hair Cuttery, located next door, I would come here for a donut. The donuts taste very good. The Asian woman who is one of the owners and works the donut side is excessively impatient and you get the feeling she is doing u a favor in taking your money. One of the few places that open very early (5:00 am) on a weekday. Skip the breakfast ($4 for two extremely thin pieces of French toast) and just go for the donuts and pastries and their impressive coffee bar. Although there's ample seating inside and out, there's no need to stay b/c they don't greet you with a smile or even a simple, "Good Morning" to their customers. The counter service was quick, but the tuna sub sandwich was disgusting, because it tasted like it had sugar in it. There was a ton of mayonnaise in the tuna mix and maybe it was sweetened, which would explain the sweet taste (ew). The floors were really dirty (needed to be swept and mopped), which made the self-serve dining experience less pleasant. Oh man. I love this little gem of a café. The service is fast and friendly. Seriously, I order omelettes here all the time, and they're consistent in quality. Very impressed that for a such a small kitchen space, the grill has the menu variety it does. Please try the banana pancakes as well, for something hot, sweet and decadent. My only critique is that if you've got a special dietary concern or allergy worry, there's not much flexibility; no gluten free substitutions, or the like. read more

NEVER GOING BACK! I been coming to this place for over 2 years and today is going to be my last. This place has two sides of the restaurant one where you order your food and the other were you get your pastries and coffee. I walked over to the food side and got my usual breakfast sandwich and then went over to order a latte and two scones. I took a sip of my latte and it was EXTREMELY sweet so I proceeded to go back and ask for a cup of hot water so I could add it to my drink and the lady at the register said "oh you have to buy the hot water, it's not free" like WHAT!! Seriously I have to pay money for hot water??? That's ridiculous if I already payed $6 for a latte. So again I wasn't going to pay for hot water so I went back to the place where they had sandwiches and the woman there were nice enough to give me a cup of hot water at no charge. Later on I wanted to get some coffee which the coffee containers are placed outside of the counter but again the lady said oh coffee isn't refill you have to pay to get more coffee. Then why in the world would you keep coffee containers out and not behind the register if people have to pay to refill coffee after already purchased!! So I told her " you know what fine keep your coffee" so I trashed the coffee cup out and left. I will never go back and spend my money at this place any longer especially for the attitude and bad service given to me. read more

The food is ok. Nothing special. They have decent coffee drinks and the pastries are pretty average. What is above average is the pricing. Like $8 for a steak and cheese. Just the steak and cheese..... The breakfast foods seem to be better than the lunch foods. The parking is awful and the staff doesn't speak the best English but were able to muddle through my order. It has been recently (like last week) remodeled nicely. It seems to always be pretty packed so maybe someone knows something I don't about the place?? It does have free wi-fi which is hard to find in that area so I'm guessing that helps keep a steady stream of customers. Really though, just a few doors down is a kabob place with really good food and decent prices. I stop here when I'm in a time crunch and a need for coffee but don't go out of your way to visit-you won't be pleased. Again, nothing special especially when you consider the price. read more

Been coming here for years and this place is the best... huge menu, so much more than just donuts, a real full service american-style diner - plus fancy pastries, cookies, and my personal favorite: apple fritters! If you've had the apple fritters at starbucks you'll have an idea but Donut King's are way, way better - fresher, softer, tastier. I've had breakfast there several times, always well prepared, good portions, inexpensive and super tasty. The service is always efficient and friendly - not "how are the kids" friendly, but professional, quick and accommodating. Highly recommended. read more

I visited Donut King three times already and honestly, I am not going back. All the times I had some small issue ordering stuff. Last, I ordered a vegan vegetarian wrap, but I found cream cheese in it. Also, the kitchen exhaust fan is so loud that it gave me headaches. I went in to grab an iced latte on a Sunday around noon and it was, literally, the worst coffee I've ever had in my entire life. I've had maybe 5,000 coffees over the course of my time on earth - including a lot of bad ones - but this was memorable for being the worst. It tasted like stale freeze dried coffee grounds percolated with dishwater, and it was supposed to be a latte. I love that this place is locally owned, and their food is pretty good. but for the love of god please start making better coffee. read more

Just know that if you pay for two coffees (along with $60 worth of breakfast meals) at one register, you're expected to go stand in the other line at the other register with other people trying to order and pay for their coffee (no matter if there's 8 customers in that line) TO GET THE COFFEE YOU'VE ALREADY PAID FOR. What a total joke. Not only did the woman ignore us while we patiently waited, when we finally asked for the coffees, she repeatedly said, "I have a line!" I really like this place, especially after the remodeling since it feels like a new cafe. This was a great improvement, it used to feel kinda old and dirty. The ladies who work there are super nice to me and they just love my wife they always make us feel welcome. The coffee/lattes are good and apple fritters are awesome, they also make a pretty decent cheesburger for cheap. I haven't tried a whole lot else on the menu besides the donuts (also pretty good). Free wifi is very nice, good place to sit and read/study. I definitely like to support local businesses, Donut King and Kensington Pizza a few doors down get a lot of business from me and my family. read more

The food is average and the kitchen staff is friendly and responsive. But the front of house / owners are incredibly rude. Don't even think about using a credit card or they will huff and puff and act like you just murdered their first born. Ask for an iced coffee and fear for your life. Here's another small, locally owned business that I wanted to like. Once, they closed for a few days after being inspected. I guess sanitary standards were not met. That turned me off a little bit, but again, I do want to support small businesses, so I thought I would give them a second chance, and I went back. Donut King is located in a strip mall with a badly designed parking lot. Trying to find a parking space will test your patience during busy times of day. The customer service is poor. The pastries, cookies and donuts look much better than they taste. The diner food is the best part of the business. You can get a pretty good plate of eggs and bacon. The coffee is awful. Also, the canister they label as "cream" tastes like reconstituted powdered creamer, which is a reason to never buy coffee from them. read more

I have lived in Kensington my whole life and have been going here for years....the donuts and coffee are good but the reg food is just ok at best....the thing is they are expensive and the staff is not nice....never have been. I went in the other day and ordered pancakes, got my breakfast and there was no silverware, I asked for utensils and one of the workers handed me a plastic fork, no knife. I said, "Do you have silverware?" and she said "We dont have any right now!" other people in the line noticed her rude demeaner...also they used to play nice relaxing music now its loud spanish music, I felt like I was in a nightclub....it was awful. I requested and was given a full refund by a less than concerned/apologetic counter clerk who didn't seem too surprised.
