Stopped by Donut King in Pleasant Hill and was seriously impressed. Glad to find a local donut shop! I picked up six donuts and a breakfast burrito. The apple fritter was hands down the best I've ever had crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and not overly greasy. The service was amazing as well super friendly, welcoming, and quick. On top of that, the French roast coffee was really good: smooth, rich, and the perfect complement to the donuts. This spot is a local gem. Stopped by Donut King before work one day with my sister and immediately loved the vibe and atmosphere the owner was displaying. She was extremely kind and complimentary. I ordered an iced vanilla latte which was delicious and helped jump start my morning. My sister got a maple bar which might honestly be the best maple bar I have ever had (she shared some of hers with me, which I am glad she did!). I will definitely be coming back, but would like to add a fair warning that they are cash only! If I can recall correctly, I do think the owner mentioned also accepting Venmo, but I would air on the side of caution and make sure you have cash handy! read more

Donut King has been at this spot for a long time now, along with many of the storefronts here in this shopping center, though, some are newer than others in recent years. The decor isn't going to be anything to jump at, as it's just your typical donut/breakfast style kind of shop. What does make this shop slightly different will be that they are a Vietnamese owned place, which I'll explain the difference in a bit once I get to their donuts. Back in the day, this place was also packed early in the morning, and if you didn't get there by noonish time, almost all of the donuts would be sold out with the exception of bear claws and coffee bars, which for me was a pass. So you had to make sure to arrive at a good time. However, going in today right before noon, their selection was still well stocked, and plenty of donuts left to choose from. Obviously, a business that has struggled a bit with the pandemic, so now they seem to be plentifully stocked as opposed to before. Now, I don't necessarily consider that a bad thing because I can actually get a donut I want now without choosing between things I didn't really want because it's after noon time. One thing that I do feel has changed drastically, is expected, the price for the donuts. Admittedly, I don't remember having been back here since the start of the pandemic a couple years back, so it may have slightly gone up since then, but the price per donuts currently are a bit high. If you buy a dozen of course, makes it cheaper. Their sandwiches also have appeared to gone up a bit in price as well. But hey, let's talk donuts! Today I didn't really plan to get a donut, as it was already kind of late in the early day, and I was just there to get a haircut, but waiting for my stylist to be freed up, so walked around the strip for a bit. I walked inside merely to see if they were still sold out of donuts like they usually were in the past. But as I've already mentioned, they were not, so everything was in play. Though I just walked out with a regular chocolate glaze donut since I hadn't really planned for it but did want to see if they were still the same. The donut was still pretty good. Remember when I mentioned the Vietnamese aspect of the shop? I mention this because Vietnamese bakery/donut shops tend to do their donuts slightly different, and there's a bit more of a crisp/crunchiness to the outside of the dough when they make their donuts. The inside is also pretty soft, but had more of a doughy feel to it rather than a harder texture, but not undercooked doughy. The donut I got today was the same as it had always been in the past, so I'm glad to know that part has indeed not changed. In the area and wanting to find a good donut? Drop by this place to give them a try. While their prices are high, but not outrageously high, they do make up for it as their donuts are pretty huge. This is also a nice family owned shop, that appears to be run by basically the same people from the many years before then. I do feel that I probably would like to get there earlier anyways next time, because even though my donut was nice, it did feel like it had been there for a bit, rather than something that's fresher. Now that they don't sell that many, I assume it's just the single batches, or at most a couple of batches, but could be sitting there awhile if you come later in the day. I would be back again next time if I'm craving a donut. read more

I loved my experience coming here! My boyfriend and I were craving donuts and stopped by around 1:30pm on a Saturday. When we came in, the shop was clean but we were worried since there weren't a lot of donuts left on the display. I was really craving a Boston crème donut or just a custard filled donut and when I asked if there was any chance they had some made in the back, the woman helping us went to the back and made some for us per my request! She was soooo sweet and even went as far as to stuff the donuts full of custard and gave us extra napkins. Prior to covid I had patronized DK on many occasions in order to purchase their big and previously very delicious raisin snails which were probably the best ones that I could find in the local area. Recently I had the occasion to be in that area and was hankering for their (used-to-be) wonderful snails, expecting to see and taste the very same snails as before, but I was surprised, when seeing them in the case, as they now looked different. They were now a bit shorter, thicker and with a somewhat different effect to the icing which used to have a creamier sort of effect, to me, clearly just a different product than 2-3 years prior, and not in a good way, being now less dense and more "airy", thereby changed from what a raisin snail is supposed to taste like, moving it from a good bakery shop snail rating of 4.5 stars down to a 3. I also tried their glazed and French doughnuts finding the glazed to be rather heavy and less fluffy than I think is good, while the French had a bit of a greasy taste and was made from a slightly less eggy dough than I like, so it did not produce the wonderful light character that French doughnut lovers are looking for. So overall, especially considering how nice the proprietor was, I might still buy product here occasionally if I lived nearby, but since I do not, I guess that I will be continuing to get my doughnuts at King's Doughnuts in Concord which is closer to me and makes a lighter, and less greasy tasting doughnut, with really no idea as to where I can purchase a quality and reasonably priced (like $6 for a small one is too much) raisin snail in the local area...a bit sad really. read more

Aaack! I took the girl here on the way to school last Friday, and I forgot to write a review! I'm blowing it, man . . . Oh well, if I'm both a Jesus Freak and a Deplorable and I still have my Elite Badge, I should be safe . . . Anyhoo. Donut King has been on my list of places to visit for a while. It's an old fashioned donut shop on Pleasant Hill's main street. Even the sign above the door is old fashioned. You don't come here for the beautiful atmosphere, you come to get your health food. Or you can get your health food and a coffee, and sit down with your buddies for a few minutes before work. I've met only one donut shop I didn't like. Shockingly, that donut shop is Krispy Kreme. I prefer my donuts to have some oomph to them: you bite into them, and it has body, taste, and fills you up. Donut King's donuts do that. I had the cinnamon roll, the girl had a strawberry-covered glaze. We ate on the way to her school, and she loved it so much. (She was probably also on a sugar high for at least two periods.) My cinnamon roll had lots of cinnamon in it, and being 7 inches wide, was a nice filling breakfast and would be too much for most people to eat at once. Each was under $2. Clean store. Many places to sit. Well taken care of. Bagels and breakfast sandwiches for sale too. Cash only. We were there only a few minutes, but I could still tell that it's a locals' favorite. One table did have some buddies enjoying their donuts for a few minutes before work. A mommy came in and chatted with the workers, she was clearly a regular. It's a little hard to see from the street, and still people know it's there, and they go there. It's less than a mile from the police station, so hopefully Pleasant Hill's Finest go there a lot too :-) Okay, that settles it: new school for the girl, new donut shop to visit if she needs more breakfast. I have a private car service and I take people to and from the airport. Many times I am taking people early, early in the morning. Such as I did this morning. Had to take a passenger to Oakland airport at 4:30 AM. On my way back home. I felt like having a doughnut at one of my favorite donut places in the area. Doughnut king has been my go to since I have been doing this private car service thing since 2018. They always have a great selection of fresh donuts made and the employees are so friendly, especially at such an early hour of the morning. It is a very popular spot since it is fairly easy to get on and off the freeway, I have seen a number of people picking up large pink boxes of donuts to take back to work with them. If you are not feeling like a donuts, they have plenty of other things. Breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, muffins, smoothies, and lots of fresh coffee and coffee drinks. lots of parking since they are in a older strip mall so parking is never a problem. Donuts were good, and reasonably priced. Before I wrote this review I visited again early morning. Plus, they open early!!! I strolled in and snagged a combo breakfast burrito (sausage, bacon, egg, potatoes), crueller, and the gal was so sweet she filled a maple bar with custard, and another with creme since they didn't have any.
