Aaack! I took the girl here on the way to school last Friday, and I forgot to write a review! I'm blowing it, man . . . Oh well, if I'm both a Jesus Freak and a Deplorable and I still have my Elite Badge, I should be safe . . . Anyhoo. Donut King has been on my list of places to visit for a while. It's an old fashioned donut shop on Pleasant Hill's main street. Even the sign above the door is old fashioned. You don't come here for the beautiful atmosphere, you come to get your health food. Or you can get your health food and a coffee, and sit down with your buddies for a few minutes before work. I've met only one donut shop I didn't like. Shockingly, that donut shop is Krispy Kreme. I prefer my donuts to have some oomph to them: you bite into them, and it has body, taste, and fills you up. Donut King's donuts do that. I had the cinnamon roll, the girl had a strawberry-covered glaze. We ate on the way to her school, and she loved it so much. (She was probably also on a sugar high for at least two periods.) My cinnamon roll had lots of cinnamon in it, and being 7 inches wide, was a nice filling breakfast and would be too much for most people to eat at once. Each was under $2. Clean store. Many places to sit. Well taken care of. Bagels and breakfast sandwiches for sale too. Cash only. We were there only a few minutes, but I could still tell that it's a locals' favorite. One table did have some buddies enjoying their donuts for a few minutes before work. A mommy came in and chatted with the workers, she was clearly a regular. It's a little hard to see from the street, and still people know it's there, and they go there. It's less than a mile from the police station, so hopefully Pleasant Hill's Finest go there a lot too :-) Okay, that settles it: new school for the girl, new donut shop to visit if she needs more breakfast. Just as good as her old donut shop. So we'll be going to Donut King more. Who knows, we might run into a cop while we're there. read more

I have a private car service and I take people to and from the airport. Many times I am taking people early, early in the morning. Such as I did this morning. Had to take a passenger to Oakland airport at 4:30 AM. On my way back home. I felt like having a doughnut at one of my favorite donut places in the area. Doughnut king has been my go to since I have been doing this private car service thing since 2018. They always have a great selection of fresh donuts made and the employees are so friendly, especially at such an early hour of the morning. It is a very popular spot since it is fairly easy to get on and off the freeway, I have seen a number of people picking up large pink boxes of donuts to take back to work with them. If you are not feeling like a donuts, they have plenty of other things. Breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, muffins, smoothies, and lots of fresh coffee and coffee drinks. lots of parking since they are in a older strip mall so parking is never a problem. Nothing like a post-Thanksgiving, Black Friday treat at your local donut shop. I usually go to AllStar Donuts since they are so close to me but it was closed today so I went to the next closest option: Donut King. I got 4 regular donuts before I made the spur of the moment choice to purchase a maple bar with bacon bits on it. Donuts don't usually make me say "holy crap" but I found myself muttering those exact words after I took my first bite. The salty bacon cut the sweetness of the maple to make a savory sweet flavor that was very unique, at least for this area. Definitely recommend trying this premium donut if you haven't already. The other donuts and cinnamon twist were also delicious, sweet and fluffy. I'm not a huge fan of dense cakey donuts so these score points with me. Glad I got the chance to try this store out. What a gem! I always see this place but have never stopped by since we have our go to place in WC. However, this place is conveniently located near my yoga studio so I gave them a try. I was pleasantly surprised they also offer breakfast burritos, sandwiches, bagels, in addition to donuts. The donut selection was great! They have cruellers! Those are not that common these days, and maple bacon, and creme filled bars! I'm in heaven! Please note: CASH ONLY. The family that runs this place are so nice and welcoming. I came on a Sat afternoon and they were busy! Lots of orders for breakfast sandwiches. I got a creme filled, maple bacon bar, maple crueller, and cinnamon roll. Donuts were good, and reasonably priced. Before I wrote this review I visited again early morning. Plus, they open early!!! I strolled in and snagged a combo breakfast burrito (sausage, bacon, egg, potatoes), crueller, and the gal was so sweet she filled a maple bar with custard, and another with creme since they didn't have any. I have only heard great things about this places croissant's so I really wanted to try thier croissants and like them. But I have to say I was disappointed. The croissant was dry and had a very slight butter flavor. I have tried another local spot and felt as though their croissants were up to par. My donut craving started when my husband brought me a glazed donut from his work and, even though it had been sitting all day, it was really good! (Not sure where that donut was from but I will have to ask him. It was delicious!) So today, I woke up and looked for the nearest place to me that sells donuts. It happened to be Donut King. I've tried many other places in this shopping complex but never the donut shop. I went in and got one glazed donut and it should've been the first hint to me that it wasn't very shiny looking and didn't look like it had much glaze. It was not very sweet and tasted like a day old Safeway donut. I would rather not have a donut then have a donut from Safeway. I'm sure they have regulars that love their food, it seems like a lot of people around me were ordering breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches. Maybe I will be back to try a breakfast burrito. I can honestly enjoy a donut from pretty much anywhere, but Donut King is on another level. I've had the glazed donut, creme filled, blueberry cake donut, and the apple fritter. Each one was fantastic. The donuts are pretty consistently bigger than other shops, especially the raised donuts, and the taste and texture - Just wow. The apple fritter had the perfect glazed crisp on the outside, and the raised donuts are so fluffy inside. I also love that you can really get that freshly fried dough taste when you eat them, which is missing from the ones you get from chains and off the shelves in grocery stores. I was in the area on a Tuesday morning and saw lots of customers walking in and out as I sat in my car taking a work call. I walked inside around 9am and there were still so many donuts left... yum! I ordered half a dozen and every donut was delicious. My favorite was the maple crueler and apple fritter. The crueler had perfect fluff in the pastry and not overly sweet. The apple fritter was not greasy which is hard to find. The other standard doughnuts are very doughy. The two gals at the front were friendly and cheery. Well I'm a sucker for donut holes and figured why not have it for lunch...on top of my other lunch. Probably not my finest moment, but hey, it was a great idea when I thought of it. Donut King is in the same plaza as the Grocery Outlet and Escape from Fisherman's Wharf. Parking is a bit tight but wasn't too difficult to find a spot. As it was lunch time, there wasn't a line out the door so it was pretty easy to go in and out. It did smell pretty good in there. I ordered my dozen which cost $2.25. I took a bite. It was nice and pillowy but also had some slight crispness to the donut hole. The glaze was good but not enough. I feel that's been my experience recently. Though I would say, this comes a close second to Kingpin Donuts in Berkeley (which they have old fashion donut holes!). Not bad indeed. I think I do also prefer these over Chick's donuts. read more

Always in this area to thrift shop. Decided a good snack was in order and to my lovely surprise found Donut King to still be open. (I always have this weird fear that donut shops close earlier than they do whenever I have craving for donuts.) This place is popular with the locals from what I have seen whenever I'm around here. I bet it's crazy in the mornings. My personal experience was at around noon. There's not many people at that time so I was super pleased. Helps me not be rushed and I could examine all my options properly. A woman called out that she would be with me soon too. For the less than two minute wait time for we to show up, I examined the menu. I looked at the choices of donuts from sugar donuts, maple donuts, croissants, muffins, sodas and water and juice, a bunch of coffee, and guess what? Breakfast burritos! I'm a sugar donut kind of girl. So that was my choice. I loved the price. 95 cents for the donut isn't bad at all and sure as heck doesn't hurt my pockets. I do kind of wish I had come in earlier. As with any donut shop, it's best to come in the morning because the donuts will be fresh, warm, and extra soft in the mouth. The afternoon donut I got was okay. It was just about to get hard. It wasn't cold, but it missed the freshness that I was hoping for. BUT believe it for not, I've had worst donuts, and of course, better donuts. 4/5 stars for choices, quick service, and price. read more

Sure little uneasy that you need to pay cash but the fees that all these card companies are charging stores are also killing. Especially for a small shop.
