I've been going here for awhile and the lady behind the counter is consistently rude. Makes us feel unwelcomed and even scoffed at me when I asked for a basket to eat in the shop. Never says hi, thank you or good bye, just acts annoyed as I but dozens of donuts. Maybe she's discriminating against me but every time she's curt. Also, they refuse to make enough sugar donuts. This immigrant couple has been making donuts for about fifteen years, fresh daily. When I drive by on my way to the airport at 4:30 AM Heng is always in there, making the donuts. Very casual, non-chain, atmosphere, but hey, its a donut shop! I stop by regularly when I'm here. Closes at 2PM, open 365 days a year - yes even Christmas! Not that I want to overhype it, keep in mind, these are just doughnuts. But seriously, this place makes the best doughnuts I've ever had. The classic glazed yeast doughnut is my favorite. The doughnut is lighter than any other doughnut I've had, which doesn't give me that horrible feeling that I've just filled up on a dense sugar bagel. Legit joint. Woke up this morning and decide to make some bad decisions. Was in the area and looking for a coffee shop when I spotted this place. Typical Asian owned and filled with elderly customers. Maple bar filled with custard pretty good! Not overly sweet and perfect amount of custard. Doughnut hole huge and totally worth getting but got one for free :) Regular glazed Fabulous. Perfect texture and amount of glaze. Have not had sweets in a while and this was not a bad choice. I have to say I was excited to try this place after seeing the reviews here -- unfortunately it was disappointing. I think in general there is a lack of good donut shops in the Tri-valley area which contributes to the inflated reviews. The donut holes are nothing to write home about. The french cruller that I tried (it was the last one available) was average at best. It was tough to chew through and the icing was minimal. The apple fritter was over cooked and did not have enough filling. The glazing was the only thing worth mentioning. You can get a better fritter at 7-11. Last but not least. The staff was unfriendly. Not even a smile. Donut shops are supposed to be a happy place. Chances of me returning to this place are minimal to none. read more

I am one of the guilty parties mentioned in Sophia Y.'s review. Stumbled upon accidentally after visiting Korean Village (also a great restaurant, btw), my colleagues and I could not resist purchasing donuts even after our Korean feast. What Sophia didn't mention is that she actually didn't purchase one that first day...she held back. But she tried part of a maple bar one of us bought...and therefore we went back the next day. And the next. And she tried to go on a weekend when they were closed. So yup, that's how good it is. We even got some free donut holes because we were recognized on one of our repeat visits... :P Get the french cruller. This is extremely hard to find and is light and fluffy, almost like a cloud! I've only ever had another good one in Canada. Portland has a decent one, but Donut King's actually trumps them all. My colleagues love the maple bar and the bear claw, but I keep going back for the cruller...in glazed, chocolate glazed, and maple glazed...I love 'em all! This place is worth the hype. I tried several kinds of donuts and they were all great, super moist and fresh. And yes, the crullers are amazing. They close at 4 PM on weekdays and 1 PM on the weekend. They even gave me a 13th donut for free. My only complaint- I showed up at noon on a Sunday so some of the flavors I wanted were sold out- so if you want the best selection be sure to get there early! read more

Maple frosted have always been my favorite donuts but hard to find in New England. Since we have moved to Pleasanton we have found that most places here have maple frosted, but then we tried the Donut King. Not only do they have maple frosted but have an eclair style maple donut with what I call "Boston Cream" inside. It is filled end to end so you get that cream and maple in every bite. hubby surprised the family with a big box of donuts for the family this morning. This shop is the family's favorite place. It is within walking distance of one of our homes. (We have 2 primary residences in the east bay) while coming to this yelp page to update our review, I had the displeasure of seeing this one particular lady who apparently frequents a lot of the same places we do. My friend and I actually saw her in person once when she was seated right next to us about a year ago. She was being so rude to the server, we couldn't help but pay attention to her complaints about the restaurant now charging money to add a soup to the lunch she had ordered and ate. After she left we spoke to the server. Not surprisingly she didn't tip the server as a result of having not been able to eat the soup that she ordered and ate. But, seriously the experience resulted in 2 things. 1. Recognition of this Karen whose name is cheryl. 2 my oldest daughter has begun creating videos for a soon to be posted YouTube channel dedicated to going over negative yelp reviews written by people who complain constantly about ridiculous things (like being required to pay for food they ordered and ate. Or sending a entree back SEVERAL times and then begin upset that the restaurant still charged her for the 1 meal she ate). Its the best around and I have been all over! It has a doughy, cinnamon center with ample amounts of apple bits. The outside is crispy and crunchy enough with a perfect sugar top. I found out about Donut King through Yelp when I was searching for a bakery/pastry shop when Donut King came up as one of my searches for Pleasanton. I never got to stop by until this morning and I've read so many good reviews so I had to check out Donut King myself and see what the hype was all about. When I walked in, only two older men (buddies) enjoying their morning donuts, coffee and their conversation. Donut King was clean, spacious and had a lot of donuts for sale. I was happy when I discovered that they had so many French Crullers left (i.e. glaze, chocolate, the light brown ones). The best way to determine how good Donut King donuts were, I picked up 2 donuts when I was there for $2.20. I got French Cruller (glaze) and the regular Glazed donut, which I forget what it was called, but every Donut shop sells them as their main Glazed donut. You know, it's round, tan colored and when you break the donut in half, it's fluffy on the inside and when you take your first bite, you feel like you're floating on cotton candy clouds when the first bite rubs against your tongue. Awesome people, I used to go here every week when I was in school. Great selection and they always serve fresh donuts. You can honestly choose anything and be satisfied with it.
