I'm so sorry, but this pastry shop is horrible. I used to come here years ago and it was good. The last two times I came, the pastries were so bad I literally had to spit one out. I really want to like this place, it's so close and convenient. But Rolling Pin Bakery will remain my go to unless Dortoni does some serious soul searching. In this case, you can judge this book by it's cover. It is a quaint, free standing building located just up the block from the Bridgeport Ferry. The inside is just as pretty. When this location was La Bonne Boulangerie I've never had a bad experience, actually they were always fantastic, now after the name change my first experience was not only frustrating but it makes me question if I will ever go back. I wanted to order cake in the shape of 15 for colleagues celebrating their 15 year workiversary, one side gluten the other regular. I've ordered many custom cakes here before, the process was always quick, easy, the clerk would help and walk me through process. Was it a little pricey... sure but the experience previously always made it felt worth it. Not this time, the clerk was clueless, and she kept asking the other person for help with how to fill the form out, to the point I wondered, why didn't the other lady takeover? She clearly knew how to do this. 20 mins into it she still didn't take over. At first it was "oh the cake has to be for 12 people" then after we complete she says each side has to be for 20! Once again I've done similar things before and have never run into this. She gives me the price $150. For two cakes. I paid less for my wedding cake that served over 100 people... on top of that it took us 35 minutes to get this point! So I asked "couldn't you just cut the round cake into shapes..." her response was "No because they're round..." Silly me, I assumed the pan cake would have to be cut... since you know the pan is a rectangle, but whatever. I ended up just ordering two round cakes with a 1 written on one and a 5 on the other for what seem now as the reasonable price of $58. Completely disappointed. I don't know, maybe it's a coincidence or not, but I'm definitely disappointed, and as my history here, previously, had always been spectacular, even more so. If that history didn't exist I would have given it one star. The other lady didn't seem to care and the one "helping" me seem to be her first time working in a bakery which, if this was some supermarket, cheapo bakery would have been expected. This bakery is supposed to be upscale, experience-based, at least that's what it was before the name change. I would warn anyone who hasn't been here lately to keep your expectations low. read more

My niece sent me a pastry basket when my husband passed. We received it on a Tuesday. We ate a few pastries out of it Wednesday morning. Thursday morning I went to serve some to our guests and when we picked it up there were moldy strawberries underneath which ruined the rest of the pastry. Who knew they were under there?! The owner Cory answered the call and lied and said he would have the owner call us back. No One ever called and when I called back the girl that answered informed me that Cory WAS the owner. She then put him on the phone and he refused to do anything about it. He was nasty to me. I had just lost my husband and really didn't want to be dealing with this rude man. After walking around and browsing the Port Jefferson shops, we popped in to get some dessert for a family gathering that was going on later that afternoon. It's a cute bakery and pastry shop filled with anything you could imagine. Cakes, cookies, scones, breads, pies, you name it. I could have had everything in there if I didn't have the will power to say so. The cookie tray we got wasn't anything different like we had before. Amazing cakes, I've been purchasing pastries from them for years when in the area, and as a family we all get our custom cakes done from here! My favorite custom cake was my engagement cake 2 tiers, bottom was vanilla with fresh strawberry filling and the top was red velvet cake. I don't usually write reviews, but the experience of getting a wrong cake for a loved one's birthday is frustrating enough to make me at least do this much. I asked for a chocolate mousse cake and went home with what I was told was a large chocolate mousse cake (it was brought from the back, and entirely chocolate looking on the outside). Only after eating the first piece did we realize that there was absolutely no mousse in it - it was just a regular chocolate layer cake with buttery frosting on the outside. If we were fans of chocolate layer cake (and if I had asked for that), it would've gotten 3 or 4 stars. Unrelated side note: rather than being asked whether it's for "a boy or a girl " in order to have "happy birthday " written on it, I think I would feel more comfortable just choosing a color. read more

This review is for the location in East Norwich, and just for wedding cake sampling and working with Angela. My fiancé and I were able to make an appointment with Angela on a busy Saturday, as we are from out of town, and she was very accommodating. The bakery was packed since it was Mother's Day weekend, so she brought us next door to do the cake tasting with a bit more room. She included some flavors that I didn't even request, as she wanted me to know what fillings typically go with the cake flavors I chose. She was very attentive and professional, and we definitely had enough of a sample of everything to be sure of our final decision. Also, my favorite part, was that Angela was willing to make recommendations and go out of her way to help make my dream cake a reality. I intend to come back and update my review after my wedding next summer, so this could certainly be a 5 star review, but you'll just have to stay tuned. read more

The blueberry danish I bought there this morning was stale, and made with canned gloppy "blueberry" gel and with the same icing poured over it, as sold in every deli on LI. When I walked in I noticed right away a short young girl with dirty blonde hair was annoyed. I asked if they were still open she said we close in 5 minutes. I asked if I could make a purchase and she snapped back and said "you can only use a card". I said ok. Right after me an older gentlemen walked In and said, I was looking to see what 5 lbs of cookies would cost ? She once again snapped at him . I don't have them now. He said he was looking to order them for a party. Once again sounding annoyed she said , 87.00. While I was being helped by a nicer employee with brown hair and placing my order i over heard the older gentleman ask for a Lindsey tart. She snapped you have to pay by card. He asked why. She said because I closed the draw. Now at this time I'm waiting to pay for my purchase and I'm appalled at how this spoiled brat is talking to this elder gentleman who finally said to her.... why do you have an attitude. You don't really have a good attitude. She snaps back at the gentleman saying... "well I don't like your attitude". WTF... this man was clearly in his late 70's explained how he has come there for years and has never dealt with this before. She said she didn't care. He walked away from his purchase and said , you have a bad attitude. At this point I said you do have a bad attitude. She said to me ... this conversation has nothing to do with you . I said you had an attitude the second I walked in. She said she didn't care. I asked her name . She said you don't need my name. I said is this the way you represent this place? She said she didn't care. The employee that was helping me had to lean over and whisper to her ... just stop. I get the impression this spoiled brat is the granddaughter or daughter or some relation of the owner or is related in some way shape or form. I'm hoping not... she should be fired. She Definitely is the type to start something and run to mommy or daddy crying for help. How she spoke to this Gentleman was disgusting . Related or not she needs to go. La Bonne Boulangerie made us a 5-star wedding cake, both in terms of aesthetics and taste. We had a delicious and moist chocolate cake with chocolate Dobash filling that brought us great joy on our wedding day. For the decoration of the cake, we opted for a simple white fondant with a mini Curious George figurine peeking out of the bottom layer of the cake, which La Bonne Boulangerie executed perfectly, and our florist provided the flowers to accent it. We were concerned at first about the level of service we would experience based on prior cake orders we had with La Bonne that were lost or not complete at the time of pickup. However, we worked directly with the owner Donny and he assured us that there would be no issues. Overall, amazing product - you can't get a better cake than from here! I'm obsessed with this sweet (pun intended) little bakery. It looks unassuming from the exterior, but don't let that fool you. They have a large selection and you are sure to find that perfect something for any occasion. Our absolute FAVORITE is their pear tart. It presents beautifully, which is nice, and it tastes absolutely devine. If you like almond paste, its a must try. It's our first choice when we are trying to impress guests. I recently purchased their rainbow cookie cake for a birthday celebration. That was a big hit as well. It has a raspberry mousse inside that was so light and airy. Mmmm! I like picking up decorative cupcakes and cookies for my niece and nephew. Most recently I purchased cupcakes that looked like Elmo and Cookie Monster. They make different cookies for each holiday, even the obscure ones. I once purchased cookies for Cinco De Mayo. Their decorator is very talented. They make fresh bread daily. This alone is worth the trip. We stop in every few weeks for a fresh loaf. We have purchased a lot of different items here. We have our favorites but we have never been disappointed. If you are not from the area, this is a perfect spot to stop for a cup of coffee and a sweet treat while walking around downtown. I went to this French named bakery to specially order, five days in advance, a french specialty cake called a "Galette des Rois" which they told me they knew how to make. They confirmed that it was made the traditional french way with almond paste and they called it the "Kings Cake". Basically, when I arrived to get the cake, which looked like a mardi gras festival, I sliced it open because she said it was the correct cake and it did not look anything like what I had ordered. Inside was some sort of cheese cake (not good) without any almond paste. Definitely not what I ordered and paid for at an overpriced amount ($30). When I told them this is not what I ordered, the customer service was unapologetic and dismissive. They simply said that's how they make it. After cutting the cake open to find out it was some kind of cheese cake, and her not even apologizing for the misunderstanding, I decided to leave the cake on the counter. Offering a gesture of apology would have been appreciated, however, it probably never even occurred to her to do so. If they insist on calling their bakery La Bonne Boulangerie, they should know how to make a traditional New Year's French specialty cake. And they should consider hiring more professional and courteous staff. We won't be back. read more

I had ordered a surprise 60th birthday cake for my husband. I sat with Audrey who helped to take the order and assured me everything would be fine. I had given her a picture of a cake ( fishing theme) to copy. This party was supposed to take place at The Three Village Inn for a Sunday brunch. The cake was to be displayed in between bottles of etched wine which were the party favors. My receipt indicated the cake would be there by 9am. When my birthday boy husband and I arrived at 11am the cake was nowhere to be seen. I immediately called the bakery. The young girl who answered said the cake wasn't supposed to be there until 1pm. I indicated my contract stated 9 and to get the cake here ASAP . The cake did not arrive until 2pm when my guests were ready to leave. The bakery is less than 10 minutes from The Three Village Inn They got to sing Happy Birthday and the cake was whisked off to the back to be cut up, no one really got to see and appreciate it. After several phone calls to chase down Cory, who would not call me back, he immediately attempted to offer me back the delivery charge! When I told him " don't even go there, we had a contract for 9am," he tried to blame the problem on everyone including me! I told him that for the several hundred dollars and the amount of time my guests got to see the cake that I could have gone to Costco and picked up a sheet cake. This infuriated him and he kept saying wasn't the art work beautiful, wasn't the cake delicious? I told him these things were not in dispute and that he had broken the contract to have the cake there by 9am. He then told me that his driver attempted to deliver the cake at 8am but there was no one there to accept it! Bologna! It is an Inn. There are people working there 24/7. He used every excuse he could think of to wriggle out of his blatant failure of a situation they created. We resolved this by him giving me a gift certificate for 1/2 of the cost of the very expensive cake. It was a compromise on both parties parts. I wanted the full amount back and he did not want to part with cash. The cake was delicious, the decorating was superb. The attitude of the owner and his service was horrendous. So if you are going to use them, use them with caution. You have been forewarned. read more

So my fiance and I were trying to pick out a cake for our upcoming wedding. Danny, the owner, positioned us in a corner where we could privately discuss what we wanted and what we wanted to spend. He walked away several times and each time he came back and answered questions that we were asking each other.... Only problem is that, well, he wasn't there when we asked the questions. Turns out old Danny positioned us underneath a camera/microphone and knew exactly what was on our minds the entire time. He even came storming out when I told my fiance I was "uncomfortable with spending X amount of dollars on a pastry"... and what did Danny say? "I know you may feel uncomfortable spending X amount of dollars on a pastry butt..." So besides the spy vs. spy game that he plays, his cakes are fabulous.... except that he changes the price every time we spoke. Each time we talked he added a new "delivery fee" or "handling fee" or "sorry my co-worker forgot to charge you this fee..." We literally payed him an extra $25 - $50 extra every time we spoke. After we questioned him about these practices he swore he would get back to us, but he never did and has dodged our phone calls. Our wedding was several weeks ago, the cake was beautiful, but we were swindled, spied on, and robbed at every opportunity. I would give him one star for being such a swindling prick, but at least the final product was nice. Oh and... he still has not gotten back to us on the various extra charges. read more

He was incredibly rude, short tempered, didn't care for our desires, and had no interest in our business. We scheduled a cake tasting and they brought us out paper cups of frosting with cut up cubes of dry, old cake. While we waited for close to an hour, one employee asked if we would like some coffee. Assuming it was complimentary, we had some. We were charged $3 per coffee with no warning. On top of that, we were charged $12 for the inedible cake tasting! When mentioning the design we wanted, we were scoffed at and they tried to sell us on something we didn't want. Final judgement: don't waste your time with this place. This is a charming little pastry shop (AKA La Bonne Boulangerie) just across from the harbor in Port Jefferson. They have custom cakes and fresh baked goodies like croissants, cookies, and turnovers. They also offer fresh coffee and espresso. They have a little seating inside and outside. I found the people working there very, very friendly and helpful in helping you find what you want. The only thing I didn't like is that there is not a great deal of street parking right in front of the store, but if you've been to Port Jefferson you know that you can get anywhere with a short walk. I like to park at the far side of PJ, walk to the Boulangerie and eat my treats on the walk back to the car. read more

But so far -- the lace cookie: kind of tough and tasteless, the teeny lemon meringue pie tasted like it was made from a boxed mix, the brownie was a supermarket-type frosted one with a poor-quality chocolate taste. Tried a bear claw recently and no real almond taste, way too big and tough. The prices are very high for what you get. I would be happy to pay for something exquisite, but nothing has been worth it. There is no depth to the flavors, just a sugar rush and tough crusts. I have not tried the cakes and several people have raved about them, so maybe that is a better chance than the really underwhelming cookies and pastries. There is very little in the way of competition nearby, so they have little reason to up their game. And it's always busy anyway. read more
