Southdown Coffee is a solid 4-star coffee shop with a great vibe. The drinks are very good, though a bit on the expensive side. Food, on the other hand, is reasonably priced. It's a great place to work or study, but it can get busy, so if you're looking for a very quiet place with only white noise, this may not be the best fit. While I was visiting NY, I stopped by Southdown Coffee in Port Jeff. Located on the corner and underneath gorgeous apartment buildings, not a far walk from the water. It was a quiet Friday morning, and though I may have taken the day off, there was plenty of people working on their laptops and getting work done. It is a perfect spot for those looking for a change of scenery with a work from home job. I don't often change it up from my go-to coffee order, so I ordered an iced latte with almond milk and sugar-free vanilla. For food, I leaned into the barista to help me with this one. I was torn between the breakfast burrito and the famous egg sandwich. I ended up going with the breakfast burrito (two eggs, black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream). It was fresh and flavorful. I think some salsa would be a perfect pair with it, but I'll see if they have that next time! At $15, it's a little on the pricey side, but it was worth it. I'm looking forward to trying one of their other locations next time I'm home. I hear one of them has a wine bar! read more

Came by on a Monday early afternoon. No street parking but there is a small lot next to the establishment. Modern and homey vibes throughout the store, with indoor and outdoor seating for eats. They offer teas, breakfast meal items, coffees, espresso, and matcha. For our first visit we decided to try the iced matchas. I got the strawberry with almond milk and my partner, undecided, opted for a regular matcha with almond milk. The matcha and drinks are made in front of you. The lids and straws are located across from where you pick your order up from. After trying the regular matcha, my partner opted to add some vanilla syrup, which we were informed was made in house. That made the matcha taste so good, for me, that I swapped drinks with my partner and kept the vanilla matcha, my partner really liked the strawberry matcha, made with strawberry puree. Paid under $17 for both drinks. Would come back to try other items. read more

Have only ever heard amazing things about southdown so when I finally had the chance, I wsd excited. Was hoping there would be a bit more on the menu but not a deal breaker. There's something about a place that focuses on the basics. So onto those basics that were unfortunately just that... Basic... Had a drop coffee and a vanilla cold brew and both honestly were nothing special. Loved the fact that they made their own vanilla syrup but that and the cold brew were not strong and was pretty acidic. I can deal with the acidity but it was like drinking water. I'm no coffee snob, I just want strong coffee and for cold brew, this was lacking. The drip coffee was no better and after having to wait a few minutes for a fresh pot, made the whole experience even more meh. I hate to say it but all the influencers may be ruining the experience. Sure, I found out about this place because of the influencers but the experience falls flat and not sure if it's a combo of it not living up to the hype and the coffee just being mediocre at best. read more

My fiancé and I visited Southdown today, we heard a lot about the place and wanted to give a try for our Sunday breakfast. Walking into the coffee shop, the smell and ambiance was on par with a modern coffee shop. It was very warming and cute, we were looking forward to trying it. We ordered the avocado toast, bacon egg and cheese, cinnamon bun, and two drinks; mocha latte and hot apple cider. This all came out to about $50 which was pretty expensive however if the food we get matches the price we pay we will never be disappointed. Unfortunately the food was not worth $50, the bacon egg and cheese was about as good as you would get at any other bagel store. The bacon was burnt to a crisp and the eggs were overcooked. The roll was fresh though which was good. The cinnamon bun was average as well. The avocado toast might have been the most appalling part. $14 for avocado on a piece of sourdough with some micro greens and a little roasted tomato. As far as the drinks go my coffee was below par however my fiancée enjoyed her hot apple cider (not sure if you could really mess this up). The service was fine as well, we were greeted and the staff were friendly. The food took awhile to come out, approximately 20-25 minutes. Overall the experience was about average, this place is nothing special. If you're looking for the city experience of overpriced below average food then definitely give it a try. read more

The inside is extremely nice and well lit and has a welcoming ambience. It seems a lot of people like to stop here to study as well as meet up since it is so close to Downtown Port Jeff and is only a few minutes walk away from the water. There's coffee places, and then there's Southdown. What's the difference you might ask? Whole roasted organic beans, friendly service, yummy breakfast and lunch items + house made treats like cookies, scones and muffins. I'm a bit obsessed with their iced lattes with house made simple + organic oat milk. And the aforementioned cookies and muffins. I've purchased their beans on several occasions as well for when I actually have time to make my own coffee (read: on the weekends when I'm not up at a quarter past 5 am). We like the Sure Shot and there is one I just purchased in the yellow stripe on the bag (can't remember the name but it's beans from Peru). A+ all the way around. I'm a fan of the caprese sandwich with mozz, pesto and roasted tomatoes. They also have yummy bagged snacks - love the vegan braided pretzels in various flavors (and my kids do, too!) Love this place! Finally dragged my boyfriend here for breakfast. We were hoping to do work inside but they were bumping! We ate outside on a nice sunny day, (spring is almost here!) Our sandwiches were delicious the tomato butter and fresh arugula on ciabatta were scrumptious! I enjoyed my vanilla latte with homemade vanilla syrup and oat milk. I also loved all the furry friends that passed us by! While I like to say I'm a coffee connoisseur that just isn't totally true, however If I finish a cup of coffee, it's friggin' good. Good coffee and clean and easy going space. I advise coming earlier in the day especially on a Sunday so you can catch some dessert items. They were sold out of most everything but I luckily got a Slice of raspberry coffee cake. It was good. It's very dense and the cake itself is not too sweet which I love. It didn't even need the raspberry jam. I would get it again especially to accompany my sugar free latte which came with two espresso shots. The tourists walking around Port will zip by this place (and that's a good thing), let them grab an Ice Cream cone and listen for the ferry horn. Fix me a pour over please and thank you. I must of shocked the kid behind the counter when he asked me how everything was? I told him my famous egg sandwich wasn't so famous. The bread was really hard to chew through. Listen, this isn't Southdown Egg Sandwich, it's Southdown Coffee in my Port Jefferson. And they make an amazing coffee. Before I start, yes this is a true coffee house. If you're going to get all uppity on me about my latte choice then take your peaberry sippin' coffee ass out of my town. I'll continue. I truly enjoyed my first coffee, the Maple Spiced Latte. Creamy, dream and filled with warm fall flavors. It was a very nice drink. My wife ordered a cold brew with a egg white breakfast plate. My wife loved her meal and said this is her go to spot. Long Island coffee lovers rejoice, there is a new competitor to the chain coffee scene! I cannot speak for the other stores, but the Port Jefferson location of Southdown is brightly lit and more spacious than its Northport counterpart. Its a bit off off of Port Jeff's main street so parking shouldn't be an issue but, the lot is quite small. There is a variety of baked goods, dishes, drinks and seasonal drinks to choose from. I ended up getting a classic mocha (complete with fancy latte art) and was pleasantly surprised. A welcomed bitterness, but it was also giving me chocolate ice cream vibes (which I'm not complaining about at all!). A perfect pick me up on a cool day. First time visiting the Port Jeff area and had a great time at Southdown Coffee! Their granita was bomb! Not only was the espresso mad strong, the slushy wasn't overly icy or grainy. I thought the sweetness was appropriate but it was a little too sugary for my boyfriend. Their lavendar latte was so very solid! Probs one of the best I've had and it's because the lavendar flavor tasted very authentic and wasn't overpowering but not subtle either. The milk was smooth and espresso flavors good too. The prosciutto sandwich featured a generous amount of pesto which had a nice nutty flavor, as well as very crunchy but also chewy sourdough. Because of the grill the prosciutto was half cooked which made it taste like ham instead. Heard that the egg sandwich was solid with egg, arugula, and bacon in tomato jam (not ketchup!). Drinks came quick but food took a lil longer but still a short overall wait. Lots of seating in and outside. Had a great time overall with their drinks and food!! read more

Druthers was super packed around 1pm so we came here instead. This place was still packed but we were able to find a table for us to enjoy our meal. I like the lunch options they have here. Most have cheese so I chose the one that wouldn't affect me. I ordered the breakfast platter (scrambled eggs, bacon and sourdough bread), something I could easily make at home but I'm too lazy. My husband tried the scrambled tacos. Maybe next time I'll try that instead for a little zest. We both got the vanilla latte but I got mine large and with oatmilk and he got the small with regular milk. Again, I love how they're able to make latte art with oatmilk, not a lot of places know how to. I love how this little spot is away from the downtown overcrowded Port Jeff, it's parking lot is small but at least they have a parking lot. read more

I really wanted to like this place because I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses but I wasn't wow'ed by anything. Nothing stands out compared to other coffee spots, including larger chains. I'd order a latte from here before I'd go down the block to Starbucks but only because the parking situation is a bit better. I've had a few special drinks that were really good which is why I'm giving 4 stars but I'd say their lattes are decent but somewhat inconsistent and I disliked their drip coffee. Without the specials I'd give it a 3. I go here every once in while for one of their specials as a little treat but I wouldn't make this my go-to daily coffee spot. read more

The long sandy colored table tops, plants, and ample seating make it suitable for a relaxing thought session, casual conversation, or studying! Whenever I come here, my mood is instantly enhanced by its welcoming and bright atmosphere. The staff are nice and prepared my drink quickly. I ordered an iced latte with oatmilk and vanilla. Southdown has really high quality coffee, and the flavor shines through even in more mixed and flavored lattes (Coffee is quite harsh on my stomach so I usually need something with milk - I have tried the maple latte, cardamom crunch latte, and their cappuccinos). All were very good -I really would only recommend their coffees, standard or more specialized. Their matcha and chai are pretty watered down and tasteless. Their food items are well made but the flavors don't always meld well together for me. Their baked goods are too dry for my liking (not sure if this is due to keeping older pastries or if they are dry by design). The food is also pricey for what it is. Overall, I frequent this place whether to pick up a coffee or stay and study in their well lit seating area (although its quiet chilly so bring layers!). read more

Coming from a city where there's literally a great coffee shop or two on every block (Phoenix), my expectations are high, as Im quite spoiled. Southdown was very nice, decor a little cold and stark. Some art on the walls would be to my liking. Seating ok with some small round tables. Not any cushy chairs to sit and relax with a good book and coffee. Speaking of coffee, very good Americano. No milk needed as taste was good without. I ordered a bowl of oatmeal, which unfortunately was instant. No toppings just oatmeal. A little something on the side or mixed in would've been nice. I added cinnamon and raw sugar for a little crunch. Parking, of course is always a problem in PJ. As I was making my way, my friend called to tell me to hurry up, a spot just opened. I think the only other coffee shop in PJ is Starbucks. This is definitely the alternative. Looking forward to going back to Phx where there's more of a choice. read more

I'd never heard of the Famous Egg Sandwich, but its aspirations are justified. I suggest scrambled eggs with extra tomato butter, the spread paradoxically bringing everything together. The coffee is the best in town and made with knowledge and care. The atmosphere is bright and airy, and extends the downtown foot traffic several blocks past the beaten cement path. The staff has a different form of ADHD: Attentive, Driven, Hardworking, and Delightful. Over the last month, I've been fortunate to become a regular and get to know them.  Tim pours over coffee and conversation, but only one gets a filter. Liam grinds coffee with a headspin and ices it with a baby freeze. Sami greets you with a spritz of joy and disinfection. They make Iron Maiden sound like an audio massage at the end of your day. Caroline is the only one allowed to make the maple spice latte because she makes the daily commute from Vermont. This is my own mythology. Kaylynn mayykes coffyy whyyle keeping the shyyp running smoothlyy. On Sundays, TJ is a DJ that spins caffeine vinyl at 3,333 rpm. It turns Black Sabbath Coffee into Alvin and the Dripmunks. Mojito Joe orders the kombucha cans. ("Hey Joe, I'm waiting patiently down the block, reclining on your beanbag seat. Let's just do this peacefully so no one gets girt, got, or hurt. This is absolutely my favorite coffee spot. Druthers was my go to but it was totally out of my way. Southdown does it right. Definitely one of the best coffees /iced lattes I've ever had. The food is excellent and very fresh and homemade. The staff are all extremely friendly and do their job well. It's great to just get your coffee and hang out talking them all .. Southdown provides low key pleasant atmosphere for a coffee, cool refreshment, nosh or sandwich inside or out with a friendly, smiling, refreshing presentation from some great people behind the counter!! Nothing like that national chain from the west coast!! Easy ordering on line or in person with quick turnaround of delicious food!! Favorite drink is the cardamom latte which is seasonal (I think) and can't wait until it's back! Otherwise recommend their maple spice latte. I just tried their new flower power latte and rosemary latte and both fell a little flat. They were ok but I think the flavors need to be stronger. For the flower power, I can taste a little ginger but that's it. For the rosemary latte, there's rose water or syrup in it but you can't taste it, not even subtly. There's a hint of rosemary. Two things I enjoy about this coffee shop as opposed to others in the area: friendly staff and their build your own platter option which lets me customize my lunch. (Recommend Shredded chicken, beans, spicy sour cream, over salad) Where I think they're lacking overall is food -- they don't really have a standout item. Nothing is bad but nothing blows you away either. My personal picks are the cinnamon roll, the build your own platter, and the caprese panini. read more

You have to beg for a fork, they stick your food in a plastic basket without utensils or napkins, they overfill the coffee so it spills, and they pay zero attention to improving the physical space, which is pretty basic. read more
