Steady crowd on a Wednesday for lunch. Parking was easy. Greeted upon arrival. Ordered at the countered, grabbed a number, water cups, and chips. Dining room has tall ceilings, open and airy. Salsa bar was plentiful and clean. We tried the chicken fajitas. Food arrived shortly after we sat down at a table. It came with side of beans, chose black beans. They were surprisingly good. It had enough salt and rich flavor. Tortillas were warm and soft. Veggies were cooked well, not overcooked. I liked the crispness of the rice that came on the sizzling plate with the fajitas. Overall, plate was delicious. The staff worked well together. Management worked alongside server staff. Staff thanked us upon leaving too. Don't see that much these days. I've been frequenting Dos Coyotes for a number of years now and they have been my go-to for when I need a hearty, filling meal. I used to live closer and went often but I don't live as close anymore. My usual staples are their adobe salad, shrimp burrito, and their paella burrito. And their salsa bar is always good. I love their green salsa the best which is located near their mild pico de gallo. It's a sweet green salsa with added fresh crunchy purple onions. Simply delectable. Last night, I decided to venture away from my norm and tried their Chamayo quesadilla. It's a charbroiled chicken with honey chipotle bbq sauce and cheese. Comes with a side of mango salsa and a bit of greens. I grabbed the spicy pico to add to my quesadilla. I was a bit on the fence before ordering but decided to go with it and I'm happy I did. Sweet bbq sauce with chicken, chipotle dipping sauce and the added spicy pico was the perfect combo. A bit of sweetness with added savoriness. The only thing I can comment on is that the quesadilla was soggy on the bottom. The top was crispy. I think it was soggy from the heat, removed from the grill, to the plate which added to the mess while I was devouring my plate. It's alright though, the quesadilla was worth it. Some cons to note. My soda from the dispenser was THE most watered down coke I've ever gotten from a soda dispenser. It's as if the soda was pre-diluted. Also, I would like it if the music was turned down a notch & the cashier slows down when speaking. It's almost impossible to hear the cashier above the music and feels like they're speaking a mile a minute. I was able to ask the cashier to repeat what he said for a second time but didn't want to look like a fool and hold up the line & ask again for the 3rd time. So I went with what I thought he asked which was "glass or paper cup" for my soda and chose glass. I heard right and didn't feel like an idiot. Despite the cons, I will still frequent Dos for their specials they offer from time to time. They offer some unique creations and sometimes bring back the favorites while also ordering my staples. I chose Dos Coyotes for one of my choices forExplore Elk Grove Diversity dining week. As a result, I only had 3 specials to choose from. One was a chicken sandwich, but since it is a restaurant specializing in Mexican food, I chose the beef quesadillas with corn salsa. If I had a choice, I would've chosen off the menu, and cancelled participating in the explore Elk Grove program. Part of the program included a taco, but i didn't know whether it was ground chicken or beef. I liked the taco a lot, with the authentic crunchy taco shell, and generous amount of meat , and topped with both, shredded and cojita cheese topping. I did not like the quesadilla. It was filled with a little beef, a little cheese and half filled with hard corn kernels, and even a few pieces of potato cubes that didn't seem cooked all the way through. The corn didn't seem to fit and changed the flavor of what I expected in a quesadillas, so I would not ever have that again. I plan to order off the regular menu the next time. The manager was on duty and is super nice and helpful, so I would definitely go back and order the tacos! read more

It has been some time since I've eaten at Dos Coyotes, it is a place that is just a 10 minute drive from my house so I never think of going there. My girlfriend was looking for a place to get a to-go dinner so I thought why not try them. I got the shrimp burrito and my girlfriend got her tried and true Nachos. I went to pick it up, unfortunately there was a bad accident, so the 10 minute drive took almost 50 minutes. I finally arrived and tried to quickly get home. The shrimp burritos were quite good and my girlfriend was quite pleased with her nachos. The rule of thumb here is to try some of the places you used to go every once in a while, you might be pleasantly surprised. read more

Their staff always is above and beyond friendly and helpful. I have food allergies which often make me avoid eating out as it's embarrassing to ask about every little thing on the menu. The managers here are well informed about food tolerance issues and always helpful in finding something appropriate. After trying this place in another town and refusing to give them my money, I finally tried this location close to home. It's Mexican fast food under the disguise of a sit-down spot. The girl who rang us up didn't tell us about drinks, chips, or where utensils where. The food had no flavor. Lately I've only been doing pick up orders for my lunch via door dash but what I appreciate, is that if I dine-in or take it to-go, the quality of the food is the same. Orders are ready for the indicated time given. And if I order a hot entree, it's still warm. Staff is always nice and helpful. From burritos to salads, all the food is tasty and are good portions. Salsa bar is also available for all customers. My fave is green tomatillo salsa. Just had their vegetarian burrito and was really impressed. The burrito had summer squash, fajitas, sour cream, cheese, rice, and salsa. I was surprised by how well all the ingredients nicely paired and the light flavor of the summer squash came through every bite. I appreciated the burrito had an abundance of vegetables and was filled with a ton of rice. The cheese and sour cream went well with the squash as it gave the overall burrito a nice creamy flavor. I usually get salads here, but would recommend giving their vegetarian burritos a try as it is underrated. read more

The Mahi Mahi Burrito is one of my favorite things to get here. I won't lie though it wasn't perfect. Upon biting into it a large amount of liquid shot out from underneath which made the bottom incredibly soggy. Maybe it's from the salsa or white sauce? The rice was a tad bit dry which tells me the rice is old and re-heated. But the fish was tender and not overcooked. It tasted good but definitely needs to be worked on. I'm surprised they don't toast the seam of the burrito to seal it together. It falls apart way too easily with how large it is. The fresh made chips were good paired with their salsas. My other critique is the price of the food and the lack of paper towels to dry your hands. They only have a touch-less hand dryer which isn't very sanitary. We've been going to Dos Coyotes in Elk Grove for over 15 years, and sadly the quality of the food has been going way down. On this last visit a couple of weeks ago, we purchased four steak Border burritos which was $65 (before tip). The meat was medium rare - borderline rare - and had ZERO flavor, as if no seasonings had been added whatsoever. The only "flavor" was that of poorly grilled half-cooked meat. We had a large group of 24 people. No reservations so we had to hunt for tables together luckily we found a spot inside since it was over 100 hot degrees outside. We bused our tables because no one was cleaning them when people leave. We loved the salsa bar but need more chips ready and available. Food was hot as it came out. Good flavors. We had the "Chicken sandwich" no description just those words. Loved it. Flavors were so good that we hope it's a special again. We also had burritos and tacos to our unique likings. Weve been coming here for years and the food was terrible this time around. We ordered a Big Catch Paella burrito and a Southwest Nacho. The big catch burrito was supposed to have extra shrimp and there was 2 shrimp in there. I paid extra for that. The nachos were absolutely terrible and im not exaggerating. I have only been to Dos Coyotes once before and that was many years ago and it wasn't even memorable to say the least, but my friend wanted to eat at this establishment. We walked in and ordered up front. The salmon burrito caught my eye so I ordered that without rice. We also ordered the Caesar salad and the Ranchero Burrito. The initial bite of the salmon burrito was warm, juicy, flavorful and I couldn't resist another bite and they were not skimpy on the salmon either. The salad was good but it had too much corn and black beans in there that I had to remove a bunch off my plate. I tried my friend's Ranchero Burrito which is their "wet" burrito and it was pretty good. The next time I decide to come here, I'm definitely coming back for their salmon burrito. read more

Whenever we happen to be in the Elk Grove area, one of our most likely chosen places to eat is Dos Coyotes. I usually don't think about writing updated reviews when the food is consistently good. But it has been long overdue given the number of times we eat here. I ordered one of my favorite dishes - the Adobe salad: mixed salad, corn, jicama, red onion, cheese, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole with Southwestern vinaigrette. Topped with my choice of shrimp. Joe K got the Spinach Salmon Salad: grilled salmon, baby spinach, jicama, mushrooms and crisp tortilla noodles in orange-chipotle dressing topped with mango, orange and cashews. We of course, enjoyed our lunch. I never get tired of eating here because they have a nice variety of options to choose from. Along with their standard menu, they have seasonal specials. I especially like Dos Coyotes because the food is different, with unexpected ingredients that seem to bring a pleasant surprise of delicious flavor combinations. Dos Coyotes has definitely lost some luster post-Covid. Maybe it was just these dishes today, or maybe it was just this location, but I don't recall anything this regular in years past here, or in the Folsom or Roseville locations. The ambience has always been casual, colorful and fun. They display a wide variety of salsas available, pre-chopped onions, peppers and limes for your taking. Most of the salsas I tasted were too watered down, my favorite being a dark red/brown medium spiced chipotle. Here's what we ordered: Taquitos - cut in half, served over purple cabbage shreds. Minced meat feels like it was previously frozen and although there's some crisp on the edges, the body is somewhat limp and the batter more closely resembles King Egg Roll instead of a what a deep fried mexican corn tortilla should feel like. I regretted ordering this. Yucatán Salad - super large display, fully loaded with fresh spring greens, some grilled chicken, peppers, corn, jicama, tomatoes, carrots, black beans and more. What's smart of them is they put it on a XL flour tortilla so when you have to take it to-go, it's easy to lift and place into a box. Salad is dressed with chipotle cream, and of course, you can add your own salsa. This is one of their flagship menu items: an imaginitive, colorful blend of goody ingredients that collaborate together. Fajita salad - flame grilled meats with red/green peppers, green onions, tomatoes, sweet potato and mushrooms. Topped with a creamy cilantro dressing plus some avocado. The highlight here is the charred shrimp, but the sucky part is the abundance of plain romaine lettuce. There's lots of it, and it's not the greenest part of the salad. They explained the menu they made recommendations and help direct me on where to find things like the salsa and the silverware. Both times when the food came even the rice and beans were so tasty. Grew up going to the Dos Coyotes in Davis so Dos will always have a place in my heart. Recently just started to frequent the Elk Grove location more and found it great as well. The food is consistent, service is friendly, reasonable prices, great for families, ambiance is casual and comfortable, and love their salsa bar. I wish I could give this place less than one star, due to lack of service AND the fact that we didn't even receive our food. When we ordered, there was no one in the restaurant. By the time we sat down, it was significantly busier. Once we realized that our food had come out, our plates were immediately given to another family (who already had their food!). We yelled across the restaurant trying to get the runners attention but to no avail. We went up front to tell another runner, who just told us to "wait. It's coming". It never came. Asked for a refund after about 15 min of waiting and came to find out that of course, our original food had been given away. Left irritated and hungry. Won't be back. read more
