Food was so delicious and huge portions. Service is great and attentive. Ambiance is like a blast from the past.

We've been coming here for over 15 years now, but I think the odds of us returning are pretty low now. While waiting to be seated with two small children, it seemed like our names kept getting dropped from the list - so other people kept getting seated before us even though we arrived before them, and each time we went in to check on things, it was like they were putting us on the list for the first time. They even said at one point that they were cleaning a specific table we could see for us, and when we returned a few minutes later to see why we hadn't been called, we saw a small party of two sitting at this table instead! Eventually, we had to just stand/hover over the hostess and continually remind her of our presence to get a table. So what should have been a 20 minute wait was over an hour. Thus I now have close to zero faith that we can be seated in a reasonable time here. Now after finally getting seated and being frustrated and over hungry, we find out that Dot no longer provides their delicious rolls and cornbread to the table if you order a meal, which honestly was the biggest draw for us to Dot. They now charge $2 for the rolls, and they don't even make their delicious cornbread any more! Service was reasonably good otherwise, and the food was reasonably good. But with the above factors, the era of us going to Dot I think is sadly at an end. Nothing good lasts forever it seems. read more

Don't be tempted by the size of the pies. The ratio of filling to whipped cream is too tipped towards the latter even for a whipped cream fan like me. The filling of the coconut cream and banana cream tasted artificial - something you could buy at a grocery store or make from instant pudding mixes. Note that the banana cream pie doesnt have any slices of banana in it! They claim it is banana pudding as the filling, which instantly makes my mind go to artificial flavoring / extract. For $4.95 a slice, I highly recommend trying House of Pies instead. read more

I swear the reviews giving this place 5 stars are people who have been coming here for years and "love" the place as if it's a family favorite. ***** Not this guy!!!! I had my doubts of even coming here but I didn't choose the place. 1. The food is overpriced. Chicken tender plate $15 for 5 tenders and fries.. get the hell out of there. Most expensive tenders ever!! They were basic and nothing spectacular like Tyson frozen you buy at the store. Le Peep has the best tenders and fries for $12 which are fresh!! 2. Pancakes large and oversized. Some fat people maybe in love with these lousy tasting cakes because their size but not me. Quality over quantity. Not to mention some basic ass syrup. 3. Other items came to table were all so basic. Nothing spectacular including this so called "chicken fried chicken" for a whopping $17. Sorry but Boudreaux has the best chicken fried chicken with two large sides for $10. Spent close to $100 with tip for 5 people and 1 kids plate. Would never in my life come to this place again. Ambiance is old, place is loud and noisy like a cafeteria. I rather go to ihop if I plan to eat some basic food over this place. Dot Coffee Shop is one of those spots where you know you'll find a good meal regardless of what time of day it is. They have an extensive menu with something suitable for any palate. They have daily specials ranging from meatloaf, chicken fried steak to fried catfish. We recently stopped in this past Saturday to take my mom out for lunch around 1pm. It was packed with the weekend rush but we waited no more than 5 minutes to be seated. The employees were great and made sure to seat us in a table since my mom uses a walker. And they even offered to put her walker in the back to save us room and any trouble, that was a first. No other restaurant has made the same offer. Our server, Jasmin S. was great. She was prompt, friendly and patient. My mom was craving their meatloaf but was sad to hear that we were a day early. They offer it on Sundays, not Saturdays. NBD she went with the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, green beans and mac n cheese for her sides. My sister and I opted for their Dot Club with fries and a side of fruit and their turkey sandwich. While we waited for our food, we munched on their awesome bread basket with fresh dinner rolls and cornbread. Yaaaaaassssssss.... Everything was great. Our food arrived fast and hot. Everything was delicious. Before we left, our sweeth tooth got the better of us and we ordered a slice of banana creme and strawberry creme pie to go. Those slices barely made it home lol For 3 people, it was $59.10 excluding tip. That's not a bad deal because they give you huge portions, yeah, you're definitely going to leave with some leftovers. Although the place does indeed get packed, you can usually be seated with a minimal wait. The one thing I don't like are the restrooms! There's only 1 stall (wheelchair accessible & changing station equipped) for the women's restroom. It can be awkward if there's a line of ladies waiting. The parking lot gets full quickly but usually you can score a spot where someone is just leaving. As of 9/29/18, they're doing construction on the feeder/entrance to the parking lot so be careful going in. There are some killer potholes that will be hell on your tires. This place is awesome. The food nor service never disappoints. Dot isn't exactly close to my house but we'll gladly make the drive, even if it's just for those dinner rolls lol read more

If you're heading to Hobby Airport, skip the overpriced airport food, and give yourself time for a diner meal at Dot's Coffee Shop nearby HOB airport. HUGE portions (don't fret, pancakes will pass security clearance) with a throw-back diner feel. Service was good, no wow factor to write of, but no complaints. If you're rushing for a flight, tell them and they'll hustle to get your dish out. Did I mention HUGE portions? Seriously one pancake circumference fills your plate - and your belly. It's diner food with 'round the clock breakfast offered. I caught a glimpse of salads and sandwiches at other tables and again, portions didn't disappoint. Bigger in Texas as they say. When you are ready just to eat a lot!!!!! They will serve you tons of food. Tons of carbs. The Houston omelette was tasty but we added some sauce to it. The biscuits where light and crumbly. First and last visit. Very underwhelming, needless to say. Server "lost" our order but waited about 30 minutes to come back and notify our table. When the food finally arrived there was a strand of hair in one of the plates. Finally when the bill came there was a charge for an additional item that was never ordered. I have always been very satisfied with the food and the service at this restaurant. The portions are large which balances out the prices. With this in mind, I decided that this year I would order the green beans, macaroni and cheese, and rolls to go for our Thanksgiving meal for our family. The price for a pint for each was high but again, for the quality and flavor of the food I was willing to pay. Well... when it was time to heat up the Mac and cheese- taking it out of the container I see it's mushy and some of it was even brownish and discolored. It was t even cheesy. The container for the green beans wasn't even filled to the top and they tasted NOTHING like when they are served in the restaurant either. They were salty and bitter. What an expensive disappointment. No one ate them and we just ended up throwing them away- $30 straight to the trash. Today was my first opportunity to try out Dot. Having grown up in West Houston, this wasn't an area I'd frequented much. With several friends raving and swearing how good it was, I decided to try it this morning after dropping a friend off at Hobby. Let's start with the good. I had the short stack of pancakes with sausage patties. The pancakes were massive! As big as the plate! Soft and fluffy with crispy edges just the way I like them! And while I wasn't nuts about the seasoning (fennel?) in the sausage, it was fresh and moist. Food was fantastic! But that's about the extent of the great part. I got there about 9:30 - decidedly after the morning rush and all of the servers were lined up behind the service counter for a shift meeting. That's ok, I went to the bathroom and came back. I stood at the "please wait to be seated" sign for a bit while a server (whose back was to the meeting) was looking downward at the counter messing with something. She never saw or acknowledged me. Finally the hostess broke from the meeting and sat me at a booth and told me my server would be with me soon. After a while, a server did show up and I ordered my food. The food came out quickly and I began to eat. The server only returned once to check on me. My drink (only water) was never refilled by my waitress or any other server. I was in direct view of at least two other servers and indirect view of several more. No one was busy. There were two tables when I got there, and three more made their way in while I ate. Six tables - eight servers - a busser - and a host. No refill. And honestly - no one to even ask for one. Another table had to physically get up to get their check. And when I finished my food, I sat there for several minutes waiting for mine, too - finally I got up and went to pay and leave. I suppose my general point is that I felt (and a few of the other guests had a similar look on their faces) that since it was the gap between breakfast and lunch rush, it was 'ok' to slack on service. Considering this is a Pappas restaurant, I expected a little more consideration from the staff. I know and appreciate that a lot of extra and often unseen work happens to make service run smoothly, but don't forget the folks that visit when you're slow, too! I will return, as I want to try more from the lunch and dinner specials menu (despite being handed it, they don't serve it until 11AM). read more

One of my undisputed breakfast favorites in Houston. Remarkably similar to San Antonio based Jim's, Dot Coffee Shop somehow does it bigger and better. A humble start being the first Pappas Restaurant created in 1967. Over several visits I haven't found a bad dish in the traditional diner staples. Open 24 hours, Dot is quite popular. Peak times you will likely have to wait to enjoy. We usually visit heading out of Galveston towards home. That usually puts our visits between breakfast and lunch. One visit the wife and I ordered a biscuit ahead of our breakfast plates to share; possibly to soak of some of the libations consumed on the island. Think baseball sized paired with gravy or preserves. I ended up not finishing my steak and egg number taking half a ribeye back to Austin. Another visit I decided to go the lunch route and indulged in the fried mushrooms with delicious ranch (sorry Joe C.) as a starter. A generous portion of golden brown goodness as only a diner can deliver. I also decided to revisit one of my old friends from years past; damn good club sandwich with my choice of corn bread dressing. Service has always been attentive and pleasant despite the constant turning of the tables. The pie case that greets you upon entry is amazing. I've been so full on both visits I haven't had any room to try the many creations. Portion size versus price you've basically hit the food coma lottery. I actually saw someone served a chicken fried steak or chicken, fries in the middle, and a huge sandwich on a platter. That's a hangover plate if I ever saw one! read more

All the food is good but don't expect the Dots of the past ! It is not cheap know it's owned by Pap-pas so expect those type prices. Maybe not quite as high but they are working on it. If I'm not mistaken a plate lunch is 18 bucks ! And for this down home place and atmosphere it's not worth it! read more

The only reason that it didn't get 5 stars was that I noticed they watered down my drink (apple juice) and it tasted like nothing at all but other than that the coffee and food were 10/10. I haven't eaten here since high school and I remember the shakes always being delicious. I've recently gone here twice after being out drinking and it does get pretty packed late at night, so a bit of a wait time. I couldn't order a shake the first time I went, and the second time I went they didn't have French toast. But nonetheless still a great place to dine and sober up before heading home. Dot has been a family favorite for years. However, we'd not visited since COVID-19 started until tonight. The renovation out front is complete and things look a lot better. To our delight the food is better! It's always been good but it's improved notably. The chopped steak and mashed potatoes and green beans were delicious. The spice profile is different in a good way. The scrambled eggs were moist, not as dry a scramble as before. I look forward to trying other old favorites. I'm sad that the daily specials are off the menu along with the fried shrimp.
