Ferry Farmers Market, pre Thanksgiving 2019
    Mike C.

The nice thing about Thanksgiving is enjoying things that are not normally available other times of the year. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving's Ferry Farmers' Market in SF, this baker had a stand set up on the north side of the building. Walking by, I couldn't help but notice the large selection of sweets as well as their sign mentioning some of their menu items. Seeing that there was no line, I peeked into their tent and saw a wide range of sweets, from pies and small pastries to cookies and brownies. Knowing what was on the Thanksgiving menu, I decided to try three items only. Gotta watch my shape though... corny, round is a shape. On the first day before Thanksgiving, I tried the strawberry mini cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=nu1TdEysMXKaKcLgCH2BFw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the cake itself was not dry and the frosting was not overly sweet. I enjoyed this though I felt a bit guilty finishing it given the size. Skipping Thanksgiving Day due to the variety of foods we had at home, on the following Friday I tried the toffee brownie (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=BZY_Q3MRdX24efStlzANvw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). The toffee portion constituted the topping of the brownie and the crunch made it interesting with a different texture profile on every bite. The brownie itself was perfect in denseness as it wasn't too firm nor too rich. On Saturday, I tried the pineapple upside down cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=CFrKyKPaRcuJHddHd3NzXA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), my thought being 'save the best for last'. I wasn't wrong as this was my personal favorite with the buttered cake portion topped with generous rings of pineapple above. I did have a cup of hot tea with this which offset the sweetness very well. Normally, there is a rotation of bakers at the market and, with Marla taking a hiatus from the SF markets for family reasons, this was a welcome addition as a pop up at the Tuesday market. In asking the lady manning the stand, I learned that they are based out of Fairfield but I could not find a tangible address. Obviously, given this post, they are a regular at Jack London Square. I hope they will venture out to the west side of the Bay to share the sweets here. I believe they will find a pretty captive audience, especially given their variety.

When I remembered to take a photo of my cinnamon roll, this is what was left

Well, that cinnamon roll was quite the way to celebrate ending a 2 month long keto diet -- It was the perfect sweetness, not heavily frosted and soft roll with perfect amount of cinnamon! My daughter chose with her eyes and got a sugar cookie with unicorn colors and sprinkles... And my son got a berry brrad pudding slice which was deelish as well! They definitely are a great option to sit and enjoy at the farmer's market... couldn't give the full five stars because for A cinnamon roll, a slice of bread pudding and a sugar cookie -- It cost me $18 -- which is tartine bakery price point in my opinion... but being COVID times... I get it! So hey! It's a once in a while treat for us... so why not? Glad to have the farmer's market back and be able to enjoy some sweets!

Yikes. With all of the Dessert food porn this stall had I wonder, did I just choose the wrong thing? Everything looked so good and the reviews are all positive so what went wrong? Maybe as a Baker myself my standards are set to high. I made the mistake of getting the Snickers brownie - $5 (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/dots-baking-pantry-oakland?select=vSuNM5dEOVzIbUVC0ySApQ). Which was huge and looked delicious topped with chunks of Snickers and Chocolate sauce but it soon became apparent that it lacked one thing I believe every Brownie should have - Chocolate Chips! A Brownie without these are simply a Chocolate Cake. The Cake part itself was on the dry side, another faux pass in my eyes. They should be gooey and moist. As for the topping.. eeek! Cheap Chocolate sauce, it totally ruined what I thought might the saving grace of this catastrophe. I was totally let down and not even my Husband wanted to eat what was left before I threw it in the trash. I'm sure as a Cake and to someone who doesn't know quality ingredients this would be fine but for me.. nope, sorry. Maybe I will return to try the Red Velvet Bundt Cake I first had my eye on.

    Some good stuffs right here!!

We were informed there may be a Pri-fixe menu beforehand but that was not available that day either. We had no issues with that, but it would be preferable if they made sure they are able to offer the experiences that are available on the website. We ordered the wicked buns, Saigon give you wings, garlic noodle and the bo luc lac. The food was out very quickly. Wicked Buns: The wicked buns were quite good. Truly cannot go wrong with some fried bao buns! Chicken Wings: We really enjoyed the chicken wings as well. The fish sauce gives the wings a nice sweetness and makes them quite addicting. Garlic Noodles: The garlic noodles had a nice char flavor to it. We could see them set it on fire from the bar, although we felt that the garlic noodles could have had a bit more salt and garlic in them. The shrimp also tasted frozen but they were still good. Bo Luc Lac: We enjoyed the bo luc lac as well, it was cooked well and quite tender. It was very flavorful to the point it made us wish we had ordered the dirty rice with it. Cocktails: For drinks I asked the bartender what he recommended and offered to make me something. It wasn't off-menu, but he made the Pillow Talks which had gin, calamansi and egg white in it. It had a nice flavor profile and balance and creaminess to the drink. I also ordered the Pandanmonium which is a pandan old fashioned which I really enjoyed. The drinks were quite fairly priced as well which I really appreciated. Overall, I think the portion sizes can be a little small for the price, but the food is delicious and great. The drinks are also great and I would definitely come back for them!

I was a little confused as to where to order upon first walking in, as there were people hanging out all around the bar and restaurant but no one behind the counter. Eventually I figured it out - they have menus at one of the counters and as I was looking one over, a man came up and asked what I would like. I decided to keep it simple and just ordered a small cheese pizza to go. It wasn't anything mindblowing, but it definitely hit the spot (and for a good price too). The next night I find myself in the same late-ish night predicament, so I walked back over there and decided I'd try one of their Ethiopian dishes. I had only eaten Ethiopian once before and I thought it was great, but nothing to write home about. I ordered beef kelwa and boyyyyyy was it fucking good! It blew my first Ethiopian experience out of the water. Atmosphere is super laid back. Second night I was in there everyone was watching the Warriors game, cheering, and what not. MLK Cafe was perfectly located and exactly what I needed. I've never had Eritrean food before, so I was pretty excited. I ordered the foul meseleh ($13) from the breakfast menu (available all day though I had to ask for it), which was a bean-based dish, and chai. It kind of reminded me of shakshuka in terms of spices but the beans almost tasted meaty. I liked it so much that I brought it home, and my partner said it tasted like refried beans (though he did have them cold). The crusty warm bread was perfect for dipping, and I ended up not being able to finish it. The chai was pretty milky; there was a tea bag and the spices weren't very strong. Then again, I'm used to Indian chais. I would pass on the chai. There was basically no one else there on a Friday afternoon during off-peak hours. It was dimly lit and kind of chilly because the door was left open, so it wasn't the most comfortable cafe ambiance. The wifi did work well though and I would come back to try more Eritrean and Ethiopian food.

By the time we had actually received our food, almost an hour had passed. While we were waiting, a few other servers eventually joined, but service was still pretty bare for us and we never received refills on water or plates to eat off of when we received our food. I understand that staffing and a backup in the kitchen are out of the staff's control, but it would've definitely helped for us to know in advance how long to expect to wait to align our expectations and arrange our plans for the day. Would advise giving customers a quick heads up/warning because that on its own would've made a big difference. As for the actual food, we ordered the mac trio with elote mac, chicken pot pie mac, and kogi short rib mac (for an extra fee). The elote mac was the best and most flavorful, the short rib mac was okay but not amazing or worth the extra money, and the chicken pot pie mac was very bland/flavorless and didn't have much chicken in it. The food didn't feel like it warranted the wait time and because of that I would not return.
