Mmm. Everything looked so good. I encourage you to ask about the items because what I had mistaken as coffee cake was actually Hummingbird Cake, which I had not known before (it's popular in Jamaica and the South). As I wrote in my review of Jack London Square Farmers Market, "it's a must for banana bread enthusiasts because it tastes more like cream-cheese frosted banana bread than cake. Fitting that is has both BANANAS and NUTS because it's CRAZY good." I love that their tent is netted, which keeps out the bugs (but NOT the bubbles being blown from some joker two tents down). I do wish, however, that they had a price menu because cynical me has to wonder if I getting a white surcharge. Side note: Tina was one of the market's original vendors over 20 years ago. She experimented with the southern classic recipes of her mom, for whom she named her business. She also uses dessert menus from her travels as inspiration, which means she can deduct travel expenses! The nice thing about Thanksgiving is enjoying things that are not normally available other times of the year. On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving's Ferry Farmers' Market in SF, this baker had a stand set up on the north side of the building. Walking by, I couldn't help but notice the large selection of sweets as well as their sign mentioning some of their menu items. Seeing that there was no line, I peeked into their tent and saw a wide range of sweets, from pies and small pastries to cookies and brownies. Knowing what was on the Thanksgiving menu, I decided to try three items only. Gotta watch my shape though... corny, round is a shape. On the first day before Thanksgiving, I tried the strawberry mini cake (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=nu1TdEysMXKaKcLgCH2BFw&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q); the cake itself was not dry and the frosting was not overly sweet. I enjoyed this though I felt a bit guilty finishing it given the size. The toffee portion constituted the topping of the brownie and the crunch made it interesting with a different texture profile on every bite. The brownie itself was perfect in denseness as it wasn't too firm nor too rich. I wasn't wrong as this was my personal favorite with the buttered cake portion topped with generous rings of pineapple above. I did have a cup of hot tea with this which offset the sweetness very well. Normally, there is a rotation of bakers at the market and, with Marla taking a hiatus from the SF markets for family reasons, this was a welcome addition as a pop up at the Tuesday market. In asking the lady manning the stand, I learned that they are based out of Fairfield but I could not find a tangible address. Obviously, given this post, they are a regular at Jack London Square. I hope they will venture out to the west side of the Bay to share the sweets here. I believe they will find a pretty captive audience, especially given their variety. read more

Happened to be in the area when the farmers market was going on and stopped by for some delicious looking treats! I tried the strawberry cake which was deliciously moist and flavorful. My friends tried the scone which had amazingly flavorful berries in it and one of their pineapple concoctions which was also pretty good! Only two notes is I would appreciate pricing being listed and while the tent was netted the pastries were all still out and I did see a few flies get into the net and circle around the goods. I can't imagine it's easy being a bakery in an outdoor setting but display cases or coverings of sort would be a little safer in my opinion. read more

Well, that cinnamon roll was quite the way to celebrate ending a 2 month long keto diet -- It was the perfect sweetness, not heavily frosted and soft roll with perfect amount of cinnamon! My daughter chose with her eyes and got a sugar cookie with unicorn colors and sprinkles... And my son got a berry brrad pudding slice which was deelish as well! They definitely are a great option to sit and enjoy at the farmer's market... couldn't give the full five stars because for A cinnamon roll, a slice of bread pudding and a sugar cookie -- It cost me $18 -- which is tartine bakery price point in my opinion... but being COVID times... I get it! So hey! It's a once in a while treat for us... so why not? Glad to have the farmer's market back and be able to enjoy some sweets! read more

Yikes. With all of the Dessert food porn this stall had I wonder, did I just choose the wrong thing? Everything looked so good and the reviews are all positive so what went wrong? Maybe as a Baker myself my standards are set to high. Which was huge and looked delicious topped with chunks of Snickers and Chocolate sauce but it soon became apparent that it lacked one thing I believe every Brownie should have - Chocolate Chips! A Brownie without these are simply a Chocolate Cake. The Cake part itself was on the dry side, another faux pass in my eyes. They should be gooey and moist. As for the topping.. eeek! Cheap Chocolate sauce, it totally ruined what I thought might the saving grace of this catastrophe. I was totally let down and not even my Husband wanted to eat what was left before I threw it in the trash. I'm sure as a Cake and to someone who doesn't know quality ingredients this would be fine but for me.. nope, sorry. Maybe I will return to try the Red Velvet Bundt Cake I first had my eye on. read more

Cute bakery setup at Jack London Square Farmers Market. Lots of desserts & sweets to choose from. I usually get their small Bundt cakes with frosting. Their pastries are good but at $5 - $6 per item, sounds pricey. Recently, I got a lemon bar (small piece) and red velvet cake for $11 total. It would be nice if they have a menu with prices on it but they don't. I had lemon bars before here and it was delicious. The recent lemon bar I had, it had a funky smell/taste to it. I purchased it towards closing time. I'm guessing the pastries have been sitting in the humid heat for hours and maybe that's why it had a smell/funky taste to it. They don't have covers for their pastries. It's all out in the open. It's a hit and miss. I will probably stick to their cakes for now and purchase it early when the market opens next time. read more

First off, every pastry I've picked up from here (I've had the hummingbird cake, cinnamon roll, lemon pound cake, lemon bar, and an apple pie) has fallen between pretty good and great. I've returned several times. Sadly, this vendor has some issues that I have experienced each time I've visited. I think what puts me off the most is the service. Nothing egregious, but I've seen the lady and young man working here exhibit some off-putting habits. Basically, they can be pretty rude. They will ignore or give non-answers to most questions or small talk. They puzzingly seem to avoid questions related to their baked goods. They'll tell you the name of an item, but don't ask anything else--you might get a rude response. Prices not on display? Sounds like a great way to overcharge certain people and that's bad service. Perhaps more importantly, none of the food is covered. Given how easy it would be to at least only keep display items out, and put the sales items in a safe box, I see this as disrespectful to the customers. Between the smog from cars, bugs and other critters flying around, people coughing and sneezing, and all of the various smokes and sprays swirling around the busy market, I think it is pretty nuts to leave cakes and pastries open and naked at a table. There are other bakers at the markets I visit that will not only gladly answer questions, but at least they pretend to be friendly and they at least put up a barrier between the food and the elements. I want to like Dot's. They obviously work extremely hard. I also want to enjoy my visit to the market, not feel guilty for bothering the folks from Dot's after dropping 30 dollars on cakes. read more

Fuck yes! I am so ridiculously giddy right now after having my first decent cupcake in California! I have been let down so many times I had started to become disenchanted in my search for a cupcake I like. Today, thanks to the Dots booth at the Jack London Square farmers market, I have a smile on my face and a very full tummy. I opted for the vanilla cupcake with chocolate butter-cream. FINALLY a bakery who understands how to make fucking frosting. Its so not hard: butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, milk, and extras like cocoa etc. if needed. When I asked the woman at the booth to list the ingredients and she repeated the above I was hopeful and was not disappointed. This is not a gourmet cupcake with a cute name - this is your standard simple yet yummy cake. Its very sweet and is obviously made with lots of butter, sugar, and happiness - as desserts should be made. This is the cake your grandma made that you loved as a kid - complete with confetti sprinkles. I just happened to be in the area for an appointment when I happened upon the Livermore Farmer's Market. As I walk around I noticed a sign that read "Dot's Bakery" and I fast approach the stand. I look around and see all the delicious desserts that consist of cupcakes, pound cakes and more- I shyly ask the lady if she had any Peach Cobbler. (Mind you I have been craving Peach Cobbler for several months). When she pointed to a pan with over flowing crust and peaches, I am choked. It was the BEST cobbler I have had, EVER! A long time ago, Merrie Melodies made a cartoon called "Pigs is Pigs" about a young swine named Piggy Hamhock who was obsessed with food. In a freaky turn of events, he is abducted by a mad scientist who straps him into a creepy S&M sorta machine that force feeds him pies, cakes, muffins, donuts, etc. while hollering, "So, it's food you want! We'll give you plenty of it!" Weirdly enough, the lil' porker isn't so much freaked out as he is excited that his lifelong dream of relentless face-stuffing is fulfilled. The reason I'm talking about this cartoon is because every time I visit Dots at the Jack London Farmers' Market, I am reminded of it. One bite of her scrumptious Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting, muffins chock-full of juicy fresh strawberries and blueberries, or the plump pecan-riddled sticky buns makes me wish someone would strap me to that contraption and shove everything she makes into my mouth. I guess that cartoon was supposed to be a morality tale warning against the vice of gluttony. I guess I should keep that in mind next time I stroll past Dots. Holy hell was that slice of red velvet cake a-freaking-mazing. Dot can cook. Dot can make icing. Dot uses the absolute correct amount of icing (like... the cake is a vehicle for icing.. important, and you cannot go overboard, but that cake is mostly a vehicle for icing). Most places canNOT make icing that tastes like this, and if you're not in east bay it's worth the trip. And the extra 5 days at the gym. The best icing I've had not made by my mom. Delicious, amazing, wonderful, large portions of yumminess is what you get from Dot's! We bought a red velvet cupcake and a piece of banana cake. Both were moist, flavorful and I reiterate, Delicious. I wish my waistline could handle these sweet treats every week! Dot's main store is in Vallejo. I have yet to go there but ... OMG OMG OMG. YES. I love cupcakes. So I was working at a Zip Car booth that was directly across from Dot's bakery booth. I thought I could resist the succulent looking cupcakes (which were on rotating display--making it all that more irresistible). About 4 hours in I finally gave in and had their vanilla cupcake. AMAZING. I also sampled from my colleagues' carrot cake--usually I hate carrot cake--and it was awesome. Definitely recommend it. read more

About 20 years ago I had sweet potato pie for the first time, at the Jack London farmers market. I fell in love - it was so good! Most of the time our memories exaggerate, but today - after 20 years of trying other pies - I got to have it again and damn it's good! The cinnamon rolls here are as good as a cinnamon roll can possibly get. Thick, well-risen dough filled with the most cinnamon flavored cinnamon possible (I suspect they add cinnamon oil to amp it up a bit) and wonderful cream cheese-style frosting. It's the thing dreams are made of and reminds me of the ones I had made by old German ladies when I was a kid. I wish I could get them more often. read more
