Cute independently owned cupcake shop in Irvine's Los Olivos Marketplace. They offer a varied selection of classic flavors daily, plus rotating seasonal flavors. All cupcakes come in two sizes: regular or mini. The shop is cute and homey, with a few tables inside and outside. They also serve espresso drinks and drip coffee. I stopped in at 4pm on a weekday, and the case was still fully stocked. The girl working was genuinely friendly, and patient while I decided on which flavors I wanted. I love that they make mini cupcakes; I was able to eat 3 different flavors in one sitting without feeling terrible. The Chocolate Coconut, Carmelita, and Fleur De Sel all had identical chocolate bases, which I wished were fluffier in texture. But, the expertly crafted American buttercream icings made up for it. My favorite of the bunch was the Fleur De Sel, which was topped with an incredible caramel, and flaked French sea salt. My husband, who is a chocolate cake enthusiast, loved the Chocolate Lovers. +UPDATE: I got response from the business owner. It seems the casher made a mistake between my transaction and a former customer's transaction. I appreciate for the business owner's professional respond, so I upadte starts to five. On 3/19, I got my cupcakes by using my reward points. The casher told me that it won't be charged, and it also showed that total amount due was $0 in the reciept. But guess what? They said they are not gonna charge, but it's actually charged in my credit card! This is scam! You should not cheat your loyal customer. Got enough reward points means that I'm used to be a loyal customer of Dots, but this case makes me really angry. How you guys charge while you make it as $0 in the reciept? This is a new cupcake place in Irvine. We were fortunate to score a free cupcake as we were leaving lunch but of course we walked on over to the shop an bought more. The owner Bryan and his family did an excellent job with the opening. This is located in the Los Olivares plaza next to Irvine Spectrum so plaza parking. The shop is quaint but the cupcakes are fantastic. Currently there are no allergen free cupcakes. The staff was welcoming, helpful, and so kind. They have both regular sized and mini cupcakes. The flavors are amazing - strawberry shortcake was my favorite followed by the double vanilla and red velvet. We also got some coffee which for a cupcake place was decent. Such a cute and delicious cupcake place! I ordered 3 dozen mini cupcakes so everyone could try the different flavors. It was a hit with the adults and kids. I ordered online so didn't know what the bakers choice or special was. When I arrived it was PB&J. The store manager/employee was so nice and let me sample it! Wow it was my favorite!!! All the other cupcakes tasted moist and good but this one was definitely my favorite. I would suggest calling ahead to ask what the Baker's Choice is for the day. I've been a fan of Dots Cupcakes for over a decade- in fact they were a pretty big part of my childhood and it was always a highlight of my week whenever my family would make the drive over to Pasadena to go to their shop. After many, many years, I was super happy to hear they were not just making their way out of LA County, but went straight to Irvine so much closer to me! I have always been a fan of their variety of flavors, and I was excited to try some of their weekday flavors that were almost unobtainable for me to try since I would always visit on the weekends. Not only does Dots have 12 flavors every day, they also have ones that appear only on certain days of the week, plus whatever special cupcakes they decide to make for the day! It's always fun to check out their Instagram to see what cupcakes they have made for a special event. One of my favorite aspects of Dots has always been that they offer a mini version of their cupcakes alongside the regular size. I am easily satisfied just by eating a mini cupcake or two, so this is perfect for me. Plus, it means I can try more of their flavors at a time. My favorite flavors would have to be Mostess, Cookies and Cream, and Chocolate Mint. While they do have a lot of flavors, they do in fact run out towards the end of the day, so you might not get exactly what you want if you come in within an hour or two of closing. The inside of the store is very cute, and while I am used to the Pasadena location, it does the job. However, there is one thing that bugged me a bit and it happened twice so I need to mention it. Many stores that use a digital POS system have rewards where customers can put their phone number in on the screen and rack up points to eventually get a discount on a future purchase (or perhaps even a free item). I visit Dots only once every few months, so each time I forget if they have rewards where you are asked to put in your number since it does not ask you before the cashier is done ringing you up (most places ask you to put your number in then). It only asks for your number right after you pay. However, the past two times now, I did not have enough time to add my number in after I paid because the cashier closed everything out in like half a second. When I asked her if she could bring it back up, she said she could only do it if I bought something else, which is ridiculous. What is the point of a reward system if no customers can use it because the cashier prevents people from adding in their number? Either make it so I can add my number in beforehand, or make sure the cashier is trained on how the reward system works. It should not be on the customer to remember to tell the cashier to keep the number screen up! I really hope this does not happen again, as I would love to keep coming to the store but this makes things a bit frustrating as someone who loves to try and get rewards whenever possible! read more

The prices are reasonable. But, the cupcakes were dry, bland, unflavored, stiff, and it's definitely one of the worse cupcakes I've tasted. I didn't even give it to my kids just throw them away. I entered Dots Cupcakes at 5:40pm on Sunday night. There were three young female employees working at the time. There was one other customer in the store. After I entered the business not one of the employees acknowledged me or asked they could help me. When I asked about their cupcakes and the cupcakes they make for dogs, they did not make eye contact with me and answered with short one word answers like I was bothering them. I purchased one cupcake to try their product. It was a simple chocolate cake cupcake with white frosting that cost $4.85. To sum up my experience, the customer service was terrible and I regret putting them out to help me buy their cupcakes to keep their business thriving. As to the cupcake itself, a home baker could easily make it themselves and it is well over-priced. The cupcake isn't worth more than $2.50 each. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Dots Cupcakes and I will be telling the 1,500 coworkers that I work with to avoid the business as well. read more

The frosting just tasted like a spoonful of sugar, and overpowered the taste of the cake itself which is already sweet on its own - the frosting should compliment the layers of flavors in the cake.
