When I arrived, I couldn't commit to just one flavor so I opted to get a variety of cupcakes and I was surprised to see a few that had "Happy Birthday" in cursive with frosting (extra charge -- which I found out afterwards, not a big deal). I usually go to Magnolia Bakery whenever I want cake, so I've honestly been wanting to try SusieCakes for a while just to see how it compared. After leaving lunch nearby, I passed by the Newport Beach location and decided it was finally time to give it a try. First impressions were honestly really good. Parking was super easy because they have an open lot, which immediately made the experience less stressful. The bakery itself is also really pretty inside. It has that classic, clean bakery aesthetic that feels warm and inviting without being overly trendy. Everything looked fresh and well displayed, and the atmosphere definitely gave "treat yourself after lunch" energy. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming when I came in. One thing I genuinely liked was that they cut the cake slices fresh in front of you instead of having them prepackaged and sitting out. It made everything feel fresher and a little more personalized, which I appreciated. I decided to try the funfetti cake because I feel like that's such a classic flavor and usually a pretty safe choice. It's simple, nostalgic, and honestly hard to mess up. Unfortunately, this just wasn't for me. The biggest issue for me was the texture. The cake itself was very dense and heavier than I expected. I usually like funfetti cake to feel soft, fluffy, and light, especially paired with buttercream frosting, but this one felt more compact and rich than I personally prefer. The icing also had a grainy texture that really stood out to me. I'm not sure if that's just their style of frosting, but it didn't have the smooth, creamy texture I usually look for in cake frosting. That being said, if you like a denser, richer style of cake, this honestly might be the perfect bakery for you. It just personally is not my preference. I tend to prefer lighter cakes with smoother frosting, so I think this came down more to taste and texture preferences than the bakery doing anything "wrong." Flavor-wise, it wasn't terrible by any means, but it just didn't wow me, especially considering how much I've heard people rave about SusieCakes. I kept comparing it in my head to Magnolia Bakery, which for me personally has softer cake texture and frosting that I enjoy a lot more. That said, I still think the bakery itself is worth visiting at least once because the customer service was great, the space was beautiful, and the experience overall was pleasant. I just personally didn't enjoy the actual cake as much as I hoped I would. The Food: * The Cake: The banana chocolate chip vanilla cake was amazing. It has the perfect balance of chocolate, cream cheese frosting, and cake. * The Cookies: Their chocolate chip cookies are genuinely some of the best I've ever had. Value & Atmosphere: * The Cost: It is super expensive. A single cookie is about $5 or $6, and the cake I bought was $80. For that price, it was a small cake that really only served about four people. * The Space: There is plenty of parking, which is a plus, but there isn't really any room to sit inside. Came to this center to grab a tea from Kean, but oh, Susie, you drew me in.... Being late in the afternoon, I was feeling a bit peckish for a snack. While I generally gravitate to salty vs sweet, something about a cupcake just seemed right. I hadn't been to a SusieCakes in more than a decade, but felt right back at home when I walked in. I ended up getting a strawberry cupcake, which I then took down the peninsula and enjoyed near the water. Next time I vowed to try the chocolate chip cookie. I came here on Cinco De Mayo, after a long day working 12 hours. I wanted to enjoy this treat and I tried ordering on the app for 1 cupcake, but it only would let me do a 4 pack. Ordered 2 boxes off Too Good to Go and never had complaint. How could you, it's dirt cheap? But, checked in at the same time as another lady who got one box. They put the boxes together in front of us. She got twice as much as I did with 1 order. They questioned me twice about showing the barcode almost as I was stealing. They have many locations, but I like this one because it's spacious and clean. The people who work here are nice and always greet me when I come in. Right when you walk in, they have a pretty glass display of all of their baked goods. Their cakes are simple but delicious. They're not cheap (starting around $50) but they're worth the splurge for a special occasion. I've had their Celebration Cake, Tropical Coconut Cake, Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake and seasonal Cranberry Orange Cake and they're all good depending on your mood. You can also buy slices of cake if you just want to treat yourself and they are generous with their slices. The cupcakes ($5) are good too but they're a a little overpriced for the size. The mini cupcakes ($33 for a dozen) are great for parties. The best customer service and wonderful caring staff. I came in to Susie Cakes to get a Birthday Cake Christmas Eve. My mother was born and died on Christmas Day. My entire life we had a birthday cake on Christmas Day and since she had passed something was missing and I was sad. This yes was the 10 year "anniversary" of her passing and I wanted the birthday cake. It felt somewhat strange but the person I worked with was fantastic. She was so cheerful and she loved the idea. She said let me make this cake special for you. She said and did everything right. I was so happy I felt like skipping. I wanted to hug her for what she did for me. Susie Cakes are fantastic but the staff is also wonderful. I will be back in February to buy a cake to celebrate my husband finishing chemotherapy and radiation. Located in a cute little shopping center with lots of parking Ambiance: The storefront was cute with the cakes and cupcakes being displayed right when you walk in. The decor also had some history of the owner which I thought was neat if you are not familiar with who she is (guilty, i did not know!) she was featured in some television shows! Food: My husnand and i got the lemon cake and it was stellar. the cake was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed how subtle the lemon flavor came through without it being overly zesty. The cake had a lemon meringue in the middle which added to the overall experience of each bite. Price: A slice of cake was around $8-9 which i think is a better price to get a slice of cake over a cupcake, but if you are wanting to explore different flavor options id go with the cupcakes. One word to describe Susie Cakes in Newport Beach, OUTSTANDING!! We tried the mini vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet cupcake as well as the salted cupcake when they had it. I had a lemon, vanilla, and chocolate cupcake, all of which I found to be dry and heavy on the icing. I also got a slice of marble cake which was also disappointingly dry! Considering this place is not cheap at all, I was definitely not happy to have spent so much just to not even enjoy my sweets.
