When I arrived, I couldn't commit to just one flavor so I opted to get a variety of cupcakes and I was surprised to see a few that had "Happy Birthday" in cursive with frosting (extra charge -- which I found out afterwards, not a big deal). I usually go to Magnolia Bakery whenever I want cake, so I've honestly been wanting to try SusieCakes for a while just to see how it compared. After leaving lunch nearby, I passed by the Newport Beach location and decided it was finally time to give it a try. First impressions were honestly really good. Parking was super easy because they have an open lot, which immediately made the experience less stressful. The bakery itself is also really pretty inside. It has that classic, clean bakery aesthetic that feels warm and inviting without being overly trendy. Everything looked fresh and well displayed, and the atmosphere definitely gave "treat yourself after lunch" energy. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming when I came in. One thing I genuinely liked was that they cut the cake slices fresh in front of you instead of having them prepackaged and sitting out. It made everything feel fresher and a little more personalized, which I appreciated. I decided to try the funfetti cake because I feel like that's such a classic flavor and usually a pretty safe choice. It's simple, nostalgic, and honestly hard to mess up. Unfortunately, this just wasn't for me. The biggest issue for me was the texture. The cake itself was very dense and heavier than I expected. I usually like funfetti cake to feel soft, fluffy, and light, especially paired with buttercream frosting, but this one felt more compact and rich than I personally prefer. The icing also had a grainy texture that really stood out to me. I'm not sure if that's just their style of frosting, but it didn't have the smooth, creamy texture I usually look for in cake frosting. That being said, if you like a denser, richer style of cake, this honestly might be the perfect bakery for you. It just personally is not my preference. I tend to prefer lighter cakes with smoother frosting, so I think this came down more to taste and texture preferences than the bakery doing anything "wrong." Flavor-wise, it wasn't terrible by any means, but it just didn't wow me, especially considering how much I've heard people rave about SusieCakes. I kept comparing it in my head to Magnolia Bakery, which for me personally has softer cake texture and frosting that I enjoy a lot more. That said, I still think the bakery itself is worth visiting at least once because the customer service was great, the space was beautiful, and the experience overall was pleasant. I just personally didn't enjoy the actual cake as much as I hoped I would. The color of the font is more neon orange than the pastel/powder pink we showed, and the font is taking up the entire cake. We cannot put stargazers without it crowding the text. It's an annual tradition for us to do these extraordinary cakes, and I was so gutted opening it before my event. $90 down the drain and we're still going to go to our local grocery store to see if we can find something to replace this. read more

We went to Susie Cakes yesterday and asked for a sample of the advertised strawberry and cream cake before our purchase and got a piece the size of a pea which was just cream. Then we purchased our cupcakes, cookies, etc. and were thrown in a small bag crushed, no napkins, no bag with handles - just crushed up cupcakes and cookie crumbs. Came to this center to grab a tea from Kean, but oh, Susie, you drew me in.... Being late in the afternoon, I was feeling a bit peckish for a snack. While I generally gravitate to salty vs sweet, something about a cupcake just seemed right. I hadn't been to a SusieCakes in more than a decade, but felt right back at home when I walked in. I ended up getting a strawberry cupcake, which I then took down the peninsula and enjoyed near the water. Next time I vowed to try the chocolate chip cookie. This was by far the BEST Susie Cakes location we've been to. We are used to the Long Beach location and this one was so much better. We walked in and the whole atmosphere of this location was great. I came here on Cinco De Mayo, after a long day working 12 hours. I wanted to enjoy this treat and I tried ordering on the app for 1 cupcake, but it only would let me do a 4 pack. So i called the location and spoke to Crystal (sorry if thats not how she spells it) and explained to her I only wanted to order 1 cupcake. She told me she would hold one aside for me and I can pay for it in person instead of over the phone. Luckily, I was just down the street from them so I made my way over. They have many locations, but I like this one because it's spacious and clean. The people who work here are nice and always greet me when I come in. Right when you walk in, they have a pretty glass display of all of their baked goods. Their cakes are simple but delicious. They're not cheap (starting around $50) but they're worth the splurge for a special occasion. I've had their Celebration Cake, Tropical Coconut Cake, Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake and seasonal Cranberry Orange Cake and they're all good depending on your mood. You can also buy slices of cake if you just want to treat yourself and they are generous with their slices. The cupcakes ($5) are good too but they're a a little overpriced for the size. The mini cupcakes ($33 for a dozen) are great for parties. It's very easy to order ahead on their website or app. And don't forget to sign up for their rewards program to earn points and get perks. read more

The best customer service and wonderful caring staff. I came in to Susie Cakes to get a Birthday Cake Christmas Eve. My mother was born and died on Christmas Day. My entire life we had a birthday cake on Christmas Day and since she had passed something was missing and I was sad. This yes was the 10 year "anniversary" of her passing and I wanted the birthday cake. It felt somewhat strange but the person I worked with was fantastic. She was so cheerful and she loved the idea. She said let me make this cake special for you. She said and did everything right. I was so happy I felt like skipping. I wanted to hug her for what she did for me. Located in a cute little shopping center with lots of parking Ambiance: The storefront was cute with the cakes and cupcakes being displayed right when you walk in. The decor also had some history of the owner which I thought was neat if you are not familiar with who she is (guilty, i did not know!) she was featured in some television shows! Food: My husnand and i got the lemon cake and it was stellar. the cake was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed how subtle the lemon flavor came through without it being overly zesty. The cake had a lemon meringue in the middle which added to the overall experience of each bite. Price: A slice of cake was around $8-9 which i think is a better price to get a slice of cake over a cupcake, but if you are wanting to explore different flavor options id go with the cupcakes. Wow SusieCakes blew my mind. I stopped in after getting Salt & Straw next door and decided to check out the store. Their display of cake/cupcakes looked delicious. Shoutout to Will for being so awesome and for the exceptional customer service. When he found out it was my first time in store, he cut a slice of the coconut cake I was eyeing and said it was on him. One word to describe Susie Cakes in Newport Beach, OUTSTANDING!! We tried the mini vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet cupcake as well as the salted cupcake when they had it. Each cupcake big and mini were soft, not too sweet and almost melted in your mouth with nothing but deliciousness. The ambiance was so cute almost like something out of a Hallmark movie. The people who worked there couldn't have been more kind and informative. My mom and I used to love another cupcake shop that starts with the letter "S," but sadly they went down hill in so many ways. So it was a very happy surprise to try Susie Cakes which is literally the BEST cupcakes we've ever tried. We are looking forward to going back and trying new things especially their famous Chocolate Cake. This has captured our hearts and taste buds.
