I'm so satisfied my first time here after the reopening of this establishment food was delicious the food was fresh upon order the staff is friendly I definitely highly recommend this restaurant for any tourist in the Salem area

Took the short, rainy hike from the train station, on foot, to eat here. Worth it doesn't begin to describe what an amazing time we had. Salt of the earth people and delicious food. Was able to talk with some locals to see what were really the best things to see in Salem. The menu is straightforward. The omelette was hefty and stuffed with plenty of ingredients. These potatoes are not playing!! Good hearty chunks! Staff was quick and friendly and had no problem striking up conversation. Open-diner atmosphere with a counter or table seating. Venture to North Salem because of this place.

While visiting this summer, we always look to eat at restaurants we do not have at home (it's actually a family rule when on vacation, we started it while dating 26 years ago). So we were doing a walking tour of Salem and getting very hungry so decided to Google best diners in Salem, after looking at reviews, this place caught our interest and we walked a little over a mile to get there! And oh am I glad we did! Absolutely amazing food!!! Eggs Benedict was perfect! I'm a huge breakie and their breakfast potatoes were amazing, crunchy on the outside yet soft on the inside, soft scrambled eggs again, they can cook!! Also amazing Mimosas. They had such an amazing range of food options that everyone could eat and enjoy. The waitress worked tirelessly to make sure everyone's drink stayed full, loved sitting at the bar chatting with the cook just an amazing atmosphere. Highly recommend, would have walked 2 miles (i did ).

I love this place. We arrived for breakfast and Immediately noticed the Lobster Roll on the specials list. I immediately ordered one and I must say, it was delicious. The Lobster was very "MOIST" I love using that word LOL. And the fries that were included were crisp and delish! The prices were pretty good for being in Salem. I will highly recommend this to anyone visiting the area. The staff is amazing as well. Go and get the LOBSTA!!!

the food was delicious and the service is amazing! i got their fried chicken sandwich and it did not disappoint at all!!

Leave me in peace while I eat this please.

While attending an early morning appointment for our son at Childrens in Peabody, we all decided we required breakfast. A quick look at Yelp brought us to Dotty and Ray's and to the attention under Deb, our waitress. And as soon as she asked and then told us we wanted menus vs the handheld device menu, we were hooked. She likes her gasses made of glass and I felt like I found my long lost Italian twin, mind you I'm Irish. Boys wanted something heavy so shortly the loaded chili fries arrived. My 12 year old son said not to disturb him as he eyed the skillet. My husband asked the chef to make the chili available to purchase separately in quart containers. I ordered a veggie skillet with poached eggs. I found the eggs to be done to perfection and the veggies were prepared equally as well. The home-fries here are fantastically sized chunks of potatoes. Possibly precooked before being perfectly toasted before serving. Great flavor and substantial. Son loved his cheeseburger omelet and husband enjoyed chicken waffle with sweet and spicy sauce. We came in for a late lunch so had the place pretty much to ourselves. Got to interact with Deb and the guys. Personable service. Interested in your experience and thoroughly enjoyable people. We'll be making the trip again come next year for our son's annual follow up just so we can return to Dotty & Ray's!

The best breakfast place I've ever had! The service is amazing, the food is as if you made it at home on a warm Sunday morning. My friend and I are from California and Texas and both agreed that we will have to come back and this will be the first place we go to undoubtedly The staff is cheerful, attentive, and lovely to strike up conversations with. The local customers are another thing that make this place wonderful.

I'm a little sad that I've lived in Salem this long and today was my first visit to Dotty & Ray's. The food was great, the service was friendly, AND it wasn't insanely busy like most Saturday morning brunch spots. Parking is limited and it's a bit off the beaten path, but it was totally worth it. Delicious, affordable breakfast!

After walking by earlier, we decided on the Shanty for dinner. We ordered some of the fried cheese curds for an appetizer with a couple drinks and each got the lobster roll. The cheese curds were delicious and did not last long. The lobster roll came with fries. The lobster was great! Everything tasted fresh and I really enjoyed the softness of the bread with the lobster. The fries were not as great. Just something about them didn't hit like I hoped. Our server was great and the restaurant was busy but not packed so it felt nice and relaxed for our meal. The lobster roll is listed at market price so make sure you take note of that when you order. I think they were around $40 each which is a little pricey. We would definitely come back whenever we have a craving for lobster in Salem.

They have a "rule" that you should walk outside the building to get to the restrooms, and the dude is policing this rule since he has nothing to do. Need an extra bowl to split the soup? No worries, the dude will lecture your elderly parents his unsolicited opinions on how the soup will spill everywhere, so you shouldn't do it. Funny enough, the same dude spilled the soup all over the place when he was bringing them to us. Aside from the rude dude, prices are insane. We are not even in peak season, so they are serving the locals but their prices have a 50% or so markup from industry average. ($40 for a small and $60 for a large lobster roll). They have an automatic 20% gratuity on parties of 3 or more, so they get rewarded on their bad service no matter what. I highly recommend avoiding this dump.

My daughter and I spent a majority of our afternoon in Salem. After roaming the streets, checking…read moreout all the witch museums and novelty shops, we realized all we had this afternoon was a cup of coffee. We were starving so we looked up lobster roll near us and a shop next to the harbor popped up. So we made our way there. Unfortunately, it was a to go joint. We wanted to enjoy a site down meal so we looked again. The Clam Shack was near us so we made our way there. Parking our car, I'm looking at the shop and it honestly looked like a setting from a Hallmark movie. A cute little shop, in a park, with the harbor in the background with boats freely floating in the water, with the sun beaming through the fluffy clouds and people happily eating on bright blue tables. Like, how much more perfection could be added to this scene? It was simply breathtaking. We made our way to the window. A sweet young lady greeted us! It was wonderful having such great customer service right of the bat! I told the gal that I wanted a lobster roll. It was a must have being in Massachusetts! My daughter got a seafood plate with fried haddock and clams. We got a little of everything so we were excited to eat! It should be criminal to have this kind of food available to you all the time! To live by the water and have this kind of seafood makes me want to move here. My lobster roll looked like perfection wrapped in food paper. My daughter's plate was overflowing with fried goodness. Our food tasted as good as it looked! My lobster was mixed in butter on a soft buttery roll. Ughhhh it was heavenly! The lobster was tender, fresh and amazingly prepared. I tried a piece of my daughter's haddock and clams. You can't get seafood fresher than this. The haddock tasted like it was just caught and cooked. The fries were fried perfectly! Being from Idaho, this was the first place that has given us potatoes that I have approved of! Everything we so so so good! I couldn't have asked for a better last meal on my vacation in Boston. The food, the scene, the customer service and location of this seafood joint was something I could have ever dreamt of. My time eating here with my daughter will forever be a core memory for me. I don't know if I'll ever get the chance to come back but if I do, I hope my next visit is just as perfect as today's.

Really Good Food, Just Bring a Little Patience…read more It was 68° and one of those genuinely nice summer days, so we decided to eat outside at The Village Tavern. The patio was clean, quiet, and not overly crowded. No tables packed together, no one yelling over the next table, and no need to spend the meal trying to dodge somebody else's conversation. Just a nice, comfortable spot to eat. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive for most of the meal. The only issue was the timing. The food took a while to come out, which was a little surprising because it really wasn't that busy. Then, after we finished, I sat with empty plates in front of me for quite a while before finally getting her attention to ask for the check. I'm not asking for instant service, but once the food is gone, I'm usually ready to begin the portion of the meal where I leave. The two waits together were enough to cost a star. Fortunately, the food was very good. We started with the cheesy pretzel bites and avocado fries. Both were delicious and both disappeared pretty quickly. The pretzel bites came with herb butter, garlic, Parmesan, mozzarella, parsley and pomodoro sauce. Lots of cheese, plenty of flavor, and exactly the kind of appetizer that's going to be gone before anyone has had a chance to decide whether they want another one. The avocado fries were crispy on the outside, creamy inside, and just as good. My wife got the French dip and really liked it. The bread was toasted perfectly, the cheese was melted just right, and the au jus was hot and flavorful. Nothing fancy about it, just a really well-done French dip. The kids both got burgers. My son ordered his with ketchup only, but it came with mayo. He was not happy about that, and I can't really argue with him. If I order ketchup only, I'm also going to be wondering how mayo managed to make the cut. My daughter got the Rodeo Smash Burger with BBQ sauce and onion rings and loved it. Everybody got fries, and they were probably the most consistently good thing on the table. Cooked perfectly and seasoned well without being ridiculously salty. You could actually taste the potato, which feels like a reasonable expectation that restaurants occasionally treat as an ambitious request. I got the Cantina Short Rib Tacos, and these were easily my favorite. Shredded short rib, lettuce, salsa verde, pico de gallo, cilantro and sour cream. The short rib was tender, rich, and full of flavor, and the toppings worked really well together. The salsa verde and pico brought some acidity and freshness, the cilantro added another layer, and the sour cream balanced out the richness of the beef. Nothing overpowered anything else. Just really good tacos with a lot of flavor in every bite. The menu also had quite a few other things that caught my attention. The Reuben in particular. I noticed it after I'd already ordered, which is always unfortunate because now I have to come back and see if it was worth ignoring everything else for. There were several other things I'd happily try too. So, four stars. The food was very good, the patio was comfortable, and the service was friendly. The food took longer than it should have on a relatively quiet day, and waiting for the check after we were already finished didn't help. Neither ruined the meal, but both were noticeable. Clean up the timing a little and this would be an easy five.
