A go-to for sandwiches! I love this place. It was close to my place of residence and there was a time staff ordered from here daily for lunch. The deli is close to St John's university so it has taken a very college ambiance especially with the sandwiches have such clever names. Food: i ordered the ROTC (no bacon). It was amazing as usual. They have very unique sandwiches you can pre order or make your own creation. Bread is always fresh and ingredients as always too notch. They have vegetarian creations as well. Ambiance: it's a deli. It's small but I normally order for pick up. There are regular deli items for for purchase. And a tv to watch while you wait for your order. Price: the sandwiches are on the pricy side but a hero usually lasts me two meals so well worth it. Service: store owner is very pleasant and funny. The man making the sad which is patient and quick with the orders. Overall if you're in the mood for something different and creative come here for a different hero sandwich experience. read more

Double J is one of the best sandwich spots in the area. Especially if you're a St. John's student. They're always open and the selection of sandwiches are endless! You have to try and find the right times to go because you can go in and get a sandwich in a decent time or you can go at another time and be waiting a while. This is the type of place where the cops hangout, so you know the food is good and John the proprietor knows you by name. Open 24 hrs and only 2 blocks from St John's University makes it a great place for beer runs, late night eats, hangover & post-partying crawls. Recently, they've added all these funky sandwiches with wacky names and weird combinations you see at other college town delis. There's the Grill Man w/ cajun roast beef, grilled onions, chipotle sauce on garlic bread, the Fly Me to the Moon w/ turkey pastrami, chicken nuggets, cheese. There's also the End of the World (don't remember what's on it), a heart attack on a hero. Customize them how you want them, and eat them at anytime of day you want. Pre-pandemic, this deli always was busy (even into the wee hours) turning out fresh, hot, delicious heroes. I'm not sure if ownership changed, but the last two times I ate there I was really disappointed. Soggy fries, un-fresh cutlets, unmelted mozzarella sticks and in general re-used ingredients were what was in my heroes. I hope the ownership sees this and brings back the former deli staff, and commits to making fresh sandwiches again. Business has dropped so much for the deli, that they're no longer open 24 hrs and now I always see the store totally empty every time I pass it. A few years ago that would have been unthinkable. 3.5 I wish I head read the previous review before going to the deli because "the beast" sounds ammmmmazing! I passed by this place all the time but didn't go in to try till my coworkers recommended it (I always thought it was just a convenience store). They have a super extensive menu- which is actually one of it's drawbacks. I felt so overwhelmed trying to read all the different kinds of sandwiches and salads off the wall. It would have been helpful if they had a paper copy. I went for the egg salad both times which was good and a good dinner when I wasn't in the mood for pizza across the street. If you go to St. John's University odds are you've heard of Double Js. I transferred to this school and didn't know a lot of people. The first day I moved in and met my new roommates they got me in the car and drove me over to try it. It's a necessity to have every week. From the first time to now I've gotten a GDI sandwich which is a heaven on a hero. If you don't like what the GDI has then, they have another sandwich for you. Their menu is so big that they literally can't fit it on one page. Anything you can imagine in your wildest dreams in a sandwich is already in the menu here. read more

Their sandwiches have a lot of whacky names, with most being references to organizations and insider jokes of St. John's students. If you even been to cherry valley, you'll notice that a lot of the sandwich listed here are the same as cherry valley's, word for word but this is no generic substitution. The sandwiches here stand out on their own. I've tried "the beast" (chicken cutlet, bacon, onion rings, swiss cheese and brown gravy) which is what cherry valley is known for and I have to admit, they do it pretty well here too. The chicken is very moist, most delis that I've gone to serve a dry cutlet. They also don't drench their sandwiches in sauce. I would avoid the pastrami though unless you come here after drinking. Its very salty and at times can be a bit much to handle. They have something called a chikastrami which is a combo of a chicken cutlet, pastrami and bacon, something you have to try if you can handle this heart attack of a sandwich. read more

I really enjoyed the sand which but I only gave 3 stars due to the fact that they only take cash and it's extremely cold while you wait and the garlic bread could have been more garlicky. Every college has that sandwich spot that dudes flock to. Double J is that spot for SJU. It is an absolute hole in the wall and it smell of fried food permeates the air (and the immediate vicinity). The place has a huge menu of breakfast sandwiches and sandwiches for consumption. My favorite here are the egg sandwiches for breakfast which are always fresh and tasty. Prices are a bit high but I've never had a bad meal here. Owner is always friendly so that's a plus. read more

This is a dingey looking bodega from the outside, but inside they have all kinds of a-typical sweet and savory snacks, drinks and condiments. Most importantly, they have awesome super cheap heros with pretty much anything you want inside: Fried eggs, mozzerella sticks, chicken nuggets, bacon, deli meats, onion rings, hashbrowns, spicy fries, homefries, etc etc. There's not a whole lot of good food options in the area, but this is a great spot for a quick, casual bite. 24hrs is awesome, Cash Only is not. Their entire store is plastered with what seems to be community created sandwiches in which 2 sandwiches that share all ingredients but the cheese but are given two totally different names. Expect to stand there in the small cramped space for a while deciding what you want. Or you can just create your own sandwich. Prices are moderately high (8-9 bucks for a sandwich including tax), and the portion size is just enough. They also sell other convenience store items like drinks, booze, snacks, and plastic cups.
