Ridiculous mistake to make for a place that prides itself on its plant-based section of its menu. The plant-based meatball appetizer is phenomenal. Maybe the best vegan meatballs I've ever had. But it's quite bizarre that this place doesn't just cook up some pasta and toss them with the marinara / meatballs and make that a dish. I'd get that all the time. It would be really good. Stopped by Carnegie Diner for a quick solo meal after running errands in the area, and this ended up being a great choice. I ordered the Kale Chicken Caesar Salad, which comes with grilled chicken, kale, Caesar dressing, croutons, Parmesan cheese, and a huge piece of buttered bread. I also added grilled steak cooked medium because apparently one protein wasn't enough for me. Both the chicken and steak were flavorful, and the steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it. The salad was filling enough to feel like an actual meal rather than just something light. I also ordered the Strawberry Margarita, which was only $10 thanks to their all day, everyday margarita special. And listen, they are NOT playing with that margarita. It was strong but still tasted really good, which is exactly the balance I want from a cocktail. I ate alone and really liked the seating setup. I had a cute little booth that felt perfect for a solo diner, but it would work just as well for two people. The restaurant also has plenty of seating for larger groups, so it seems like an easy choice whether you're eating alone or coming with friends or family. Several years ago, I wrote a blog entry called, "The Ten Commandments of Diners". To paraphrase, it was a list of all things diners must do and do well in order to properly be called a diner. This diner follows through on most of these principles, and considering the fact this diner is literally on the edge of Hell, um, I mean, Central Park, it follows through on them very well indeed. You walk in, you order, your food arrives before you even have time to settle in, you eat, your plate is taken away once they notice you have have nothing left on it, you pay, and then your subway awaits you outside. Literally. The 57th Street-7th Ave station is just outside this diner. The quintessential diner should have an extensive burger listing and an all day breakfast menu. I had to go with the burger after much to and fro between breakfast and a burger. The Times Square Burger called my name. It is a cheeseburger meets a spicy chicken sandwich. The burger is served with fries, coleslaw, a pickle, and a side salad. Not a bad deal, considering it all cost $26 (before tip). When my food arrived, I was pleased to see the plate is fully covered. The burger is outstanding. Tons of flavor, it has real depth and the juices just roll down your arm. The burger is well seasoned and so is the chicken, which also has a little kick, but not super spicy. Unfortunately, the coleslaw has a weird taste and a vinaigrette based salad only works so well. For those of you who have been following my reviews, you will know I do not eat fries much outside the US these days, so I only ate three before quitting. The fries were not good anyway. All in all for a good burger, it works fine. The restaurant is going to also attract a lot of tourists given its location, so either pass on going here or learn to accept it, if that is going to bother you. I am back 3 days after my first visit to have the exact same late night food!! It was so delicious!!! Joey, the host/manager told me that they also have a bakery downtown and that's where the bread and baked goods are from. No wonder everything was so delicious. Another important matter at any restaurant is the service; and the service here, at the Carnegie diner is excellent. Every staff member working here really cares about the job they do and it shows!! And, they look you in the eye and they smile or say hello and they check to see that everything is OK at your table. It's the kind of service you wish to get at any great dining establishment, and you do get that here. The food came out not even 10 minutes after we had ordered it! But at the same time, they are definitely rushing for you to leave. They even grabbed my plate of food before I was done eating. Across the street from Carnegie Hall, Carnegie is a solid workhouse of a diner. We've probably eaten here maybe a half dozen times now. The last two times were for breakfast. We got there before 9:00am on a weekday and did not have to wait for a table, but when we finished, there was a long line waiting to be seated. The atmosphere here is comfortable and non-pretentious. Service is consistently good. The food is good, and this may be a plus for many of you, is sometimes undersalted. They never put enough salt on their hash browns, which are fine otherwise: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The omelets and Eggs Benedicts automatically come with hash browns and greens upon which a tasty balsamic vinegar has been dashed. You can build your own omelet for a couple bucks extra. The petite eggs benedict and their omelets are A-OK. The avocado toast with poached eggs, while maybe not the most beautiful presentation, is still very good. It also comes with greens. Along with my omelet and/or Eggs Benedict plate, I always order a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese. Popped in here because the concierge at my hotel recommended it. It appears to be a standard diner with plenty of traffic (which normally indicates good good). The cafe/diner had you typical Hollywood photos on the wall. Even with the crowds (we ate around 3 pm), we were seated pretty quickly - all the way to the back, but it was warm and we were seated. Now, the waitress was utterly unimpressive. We had asked for water and were told "someone will bring it". The third time I requested it, it was the manager that sent it. He refused to kick them out, and said he wasn't the police and couldn't do anything about it. What disgusting behavior from all the men working at this establishment who all watched me be treated like that and did absolutely nothing. Not even a word to defend me or tell him to stop. Nothing amazing but nothing bad either so I guess that would need to be a three star review. Service was fast and friendly. Food was average but not a bad price for the quantity.
