I wanted to leave a huge thank you to the host at the front for being so incredibly accommodating and kind. We had spent some time walking around looking for a place to eat, but everywhere else required reservations. Even though we didn't have one, he got us seated quickly and was so personal and welcoming. We were especially grateful because it was cold out and we were with my one-year-old daughter. We were also on a bit of a time crunch, and the entire staff did an amazing job getting us in and out fast without feeling rushed. As for the food--it was fantastic. We had the Southern Chicken Sandwich and the Nutella French Toast, which was some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend this spot for the great service and even better food! Stopped by randomly for a dinner. We were craving a salad but the salad prices were quite high in comparison to the sandy so we went for that. The works was awesome, love the coleslaw and the sauce. The salad was simple but effective to be filling. The pastrami was yummy just a bit too fatty for me. After trying this sandwich I definitely want to come back for a club. The waffle was delish. Bacon tasted a bit old and wasn't as crunchy as it can be. Fruit cocktail was a nice refreshing touch to cut the heaviness. I was starving on a recent Friday night after going to a show taping on 57th Street, and was looking for an alternative to the Brooklyn Diner. I've been to other eateries in this spot: the Diner seems to be doing better than its predecessors. The menu has a good number of options that are pretty reasonably priced (unlike some other diners in Manhattan). I opted for the tuna melt, and the platter was generously sized. Several years ago, I wrote a blog entry called, "The Ten Commandments of Diners". To paraphrase, it was a list of all things diners must do and do well in order to properly be called a diner. This diner follows through on most of these principles, and considering the fact this diner is literally on the edge of Hell, um, I mean, Central Park, it follows through on them very well indeed. You walk in, you order, your food arrives before you even have time to settle in, you eat, your plate is taken away once they notice you have have nothing left on it, you pay, and then your subway awaits you outside. Literally. The 57th Street-7th Ave station is just outside this diner. The quintessential diner should have an extensive burger listing and an all day breakfast menu. I had to go with the burger after much to and fro between breakfast and a burger. The Times Square Burger called my name. It is a cheeseburger meets a spicy chicken sandwich. The burger is served with fries, coleslaw, a pickle, and a side salad. Not a bad deal, considering it all cost $26 (before tip). When my food arrived, I was pleased to see the plate is fully covered. The burger is outstanding. Tons of flavor, it has real depth and the juices just roll down your arm. The burger is well seasoned and so is the chicken, which also has a little kick, but not super spicy. Unfortunately, the coleslaw has a weird taste and a vinaigrette based salad only works so well. For those of you who have been following my reviews, you will know I do not eat fries much outside the US these days, so I only ate three before quitting. The fries were not good anyway. All in all for a good burger, it works fine. The restaurant is going to also attract a lot of tourists given its location, so either pass on going here or learn to accept it, if that is going to bother you. After all that, you can go to Hell, um, sorry, I mean, Central Park, and walk off what you just ate. read more

I am back 3 days after my first visit to have the exact same late night food!! It was so delicious!!! I enjoyed a HUGE BEAUTIFUL BOWL of HOMEMADE CHICKEN SOUP with carrots, orzo, and zucchini, cooked beautifully. I'm usually not a zucchini fan, but cooked in this soup, it was enjoyable. The soup is served with a fresh, delicious lightly toasted slice of sourdough bread. I am not kidding, I thought about that bread for the last 3 days LOL !!! The entire meal was great. This was everything I ordered on my first visit and that's what I had on my visit tonight. So if you're planning to have a late night snack or mini meal plan accordingly so you can arrive before the huge crowd that will visit The Carnegie Diner. About that outrageously delicious slice of sourdough bread and my corn muffin. Joey, the host/manager told me that they also have a bakery downtown and that's where the bread and baked goods are from. No wonder everything was so delicious. Another important matter at any restaurant is the service; and the service here, at the Carnegie diner is excellent. Every staff member working here really cares about the job they do and it shows!! And, they look you in the eye and they smile or say hello and they check to see that everything is OK at your table. It's the kind of service you wish to get at any great dining establishment, and you do get that here. I definitely recommend the Carnegie diner and I look forward to updating this review once I can visit and enjoy a huge sandwich. I'll update as I work my way through the menu. LOL. REALLY, I shall. We had reservations and were made to wait in a long lines in order to get seated even with a reservation. However, friends of the hostess walked up right in front of us, and he seated them immediately in front of everyone else. Once we were seated, it was incredible how rude the staff was. They wanted us out of that seat as soon as they put us in it! We were eating our hashbrowns and kid you not... He literally took them off the table when we mid-bite with them to our mouth. You get one cup of coffee and you better drink that cup of coffee within the first three minutes of it being on the table or they will take it and they will not replace it. Refills are not permitted and/or highly discouraged. This is not a place where you swallow your food after it's put on your table. This is a place where you grab and go or you get kicked in the butt on the way out the door. It sounds like we were trying dawdle at a table while they had a huge queue and I'm telling you we were not we literally were not allowed to eat our food once it was put on the table. We came here around brunch time on a Saturday. Super busy, we waited about 30 minutes to be sat. The service was very quick in a good and bad way. The food came out not even 10 minutes after we had ordered it! But at the same time, they are definitely rushing for you to leave. They even grabbed my plate of food before I was done eating. I understand there are folks waiting to be sat, but they should not be essentially shoving people out of the door before they're ready. The prices are also high. For these prices I'd like to take my time and enjoy the company. The restaurant is loud but that's to be expected with so many people. The booths also have the table pushed as close as it can possibly be to you. The food was great but I likely wouldn't come again because of the service and the rushing. Editing my review just a few minutes later changing it from 3 starts to 1. I took 5 minutes after we paid the bill to write this up and in those 5 minutes a man came and stared at us 4 times and then kept asking if we were okay trying to get us to leave. Fantastic. Decadent. I'm rarely in Midtown but was attending a week-long conference and was excited to try new-to-me places to eat. Dining out for breakfast is one of my favorite pasttimes so Carnegie was a great find. We ordered the salted caramel waffles (which come topped with crumbled bacon, yum), buttermilk pancakes, scrambled eggs, sides of bacon and Canadian bacon. Everything was delicious. Across the street from Carnegie Hall, Carnegie is a solid workhouse of a diner. We've probably eaten here maybe a half dozen times now. The last two times were for breakfast. We got there before 9:00am on a weekday and did not have to wait for a table, but when we finished, there was a long line waiting to be seated. The atmosphere here is comfortable and non-pretentious. Service is consistently good. The food is good, and this may be a plus for many of you, is sometimes undersalted. They never put enough salt on their hash browns, which are fine otherwise: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The omelets and Eggs Benedicts automatically come with hash browns and greens upon which a tasty balsamic vinegar has been dashed. You can build your own omelet for a couple bucks extra. The petite eggs benedict and their omelets are A-OK. The avocado toast with poached eggs, while maybe not the most beautiful presentation, is still very good. It also comes with greens. Along with my omelet and/or Eggs Benedict plate, I always order a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese. Ok , it was Memorial Day weekend and it was before the shows on Broadway. I thought this was the original Carnegie Diner, my surprise! The rooms were decorated with Broadway show pictures which was cool. The service was slower than I expected even with the weekend. When we ordered drinks and that was a plus. All the drinks were tasty and there was alcohol in them. The food was mediocre. I had the pastrami burger. The burger was tasty, but the pastrami was tough and hard to chew. Fantastic meal. First NYC diner I've been to in years, and it was fabulous. Typical hectic NY Saturday morning but we got seated relatively quickly. I had the all meat omelette (okay, I wish there was something with half meat, half veggies, instead of all of one or the other) but I loved it, and even with sausage, bacon and ham, it still wasn't overly salty. Dropped by for dinner with a friend on a whim - we were walking in the area and had an urge for diner food. We got there around 7pm and it was quite busy, but there were still a handful of open tables (turnover was pretty fast so l don't think I saw people having to queue in general, even though there was a pretty continual flow of people in and out). The turkey and bacon were surprisingly flavourful and not too oily, and the mayo and whatever other sauce they add fit really well. The bread was really oily, but this was more of an inconvenience in terms of holding the sandwich rather than the flavour profile. My friend had the symphony breakfast with scrambled eggs. Overall, it was fine, but nothing particularly stood out. The eggs and hash browns were pretty meh, but the fresh fruit were a nice touch. We also had an order of the caramel French toast to share. The toast itself was really yummy, but the sliced apples on top were bland (if not sour), which unfortunately did not serve to balance how sweet everything else was (incl the massive dollop of mascarpone haha). Portion sizes, as one would expect of classic Americana, were quite massive, and I only ate half of my sandwich. We managed to get through most(?) of the french toast and my friend did finish his breakfast plate. Price point was a bit high but not crazy for the amount of food and the location. I came to this Carnegie a while back because I was looking to meet with a friend for a quick drink. As I'm looking on Google, I saw this Carnegie, which was a different one from the other one I went to (I didn't even realize it at the time lol). I saw that they served drinks and was kinda surprised. So my friend and I met up here, and I just ordered a glass of red wine, but was surprised by the many options they have for drinks. She ordered an espresso martini. I couldn't believe they serve cocktails! Lol apparently, I've been going to the wrong diners, because I've been to many that do not serve any alcohol.
