I haven't had a regular hairdresser in the past five years, and I think my search has come to an end. My experience at Double Q right off the bat was great--everyone was friendly and welcoming. I randomly stopped by one afternoon to get some info about a cut and color, to check out the salon, and to possibly schedule an appointment. A stylist did a quick consultation with me about what I wanted. I didn't have specifics, but explained as best as I could what I wanted--subtle color to add dimension to my natural hair color, and to add volume and reshape my hair. He showed me examples of what he thought I'd like based on my description, gave me a quote, and explained how long I should expect the process should take. (Clearly I booked an appointment, otherwise my review would end right here!) On the day of my appointment, two (other) stylists introduced themselves and spoke to me about what I had expressed wanting the day before (they must take notes haha). One of them ended up doing my hair. Mavis was a pleasure to work with--she provided options without being pushy, and explained what to expect from each suggestion, e.g. bleaching vs. not bleaching, and how the color would turn out with each method. I followed her recommendations and the results--cut and color--were exactly what I asked for. She was also easy to talk to, a huge plus considering the entire process took about three hours. She welcomed all of my questions, including even after I was done when I texted her about after care. One thing to note: the salon is cash only, which creates a small inconvenience for someone like me who never carries cash. But also for someone like me--who thinks that getting a haircut is super personal and whose reactions to their recent cuts have been "*shrug* it's fine"--maybe the trip to the bank is worth it when you find someone who cuts/styles your hair and makes you excited about your new do! read more

I asked a perfect stranger (at my yoga studio), where she got her blonde ombré highlights, and she was happy to share the Instagram handle for Matt. "He's incredibly detailed, really takes the time to make sure your cut and color looks perfect, and prepare to stay awhile while he does his magic." Matt and I exchanged some direct messages, as I was curious to know how much a cut and balayage would run, so that I had the exact of amount of cash on-hand (yes, cash only). I called the salon and made an appointment - it was a little hard to hear, but I think unavoidable given the regular salon noises! The space is brightly lit, and I ended up in the back area, which is a short walk through a mini hallway. The owner offered to get me a water and I settled in. Matt's attention to detail and explanation of what steps will follow, was greatly appreciated. I originally asked for a lighter blonde, but he suggested something darker, with a less likelihood of ruining my healthy hair. As for the cut, I always ask for a thinning out and kill some dead ends. I love love love the results, and noticed how happy the hairstylists are there. Also like that it's so easy to get to this salon location (for me, at least). Had an appointment this week with King and could not have left happier!! I came in with pictures of a specific color in mind and he was able to match it perfectly. I was also in desperate need of a haircut fix after visiting a different salon about a month ago. I appreciated how many questions he asked during the consultation, especially about my haircut, and how the whole process was explained beforehand including timing and the about amount of bleaching required. Went blonde with Mavis as my stylist yesterday and am so happy about it! I have a TON of super long, thick hair and she singlehandedly did the arduous task of bringing me to a perfect vanilla blonde with as little damage as possible. It took around 6 hours for the color, and another hour just to dry it all and trim it (bleached hair takes forever to dry and she didn't have an assistant!). I showed her a couple of pics of the color I wanted to achieve and she immediately knew what to do. I needed 2 rounds of bleaching and then a toner to get the new color, so expect something similar if you have dark asian hair and want to go blonde. I've never bleached my hair before and the experience wasn't bad at all. I personally didn't have issues with an itchy or burning scalp because of the bleach; the most not-fun part was probably the blow-drying at the end because it was pretty hot and my hair refused to dry lol. The waiting time didn't feel that long either! The salon takes COVID measures seriously, though they were kind enough to let my boyfriend sit in the salon for the last hour as I was finishing up. The salon accepts Zelle, though cash is preferred so remember to bring some! Everyone here is welcoming, and Mavis was so nice, friendly, and most importantly, great at what she does! She also gave helpful tips on maintaining the blonde color and I purchased a shampoo/conditioner set for damage repair at a pretty good price ($65), considering some other salons that sell their hair products at around $80-$100. My color cost $420 which is sooo much cheaper than other places I researched, especially for my super long and thick hair I was concerned about having to dish out around $600 or more. Pretty ridiculous! I can't recommend this place enough, especially Mavis for going blonde!! Super satisfied and will definitely be back to touch up my roots :) read more

King is awesome! So much so, that I followed him from another salon here. I badly needed a cut as a result of quarantine and the fact that I'm about 3 months postpartum (the baby was always either pulling my hair or trying to eat it). I DM'd him a couple of weeks back and he was able to schedule me for a week after they re-opened. I had seen King twice before and only feel it's fair to describe those visits as well so you can get a sense for how awesome he is. First time was for a cut, bleach and dye taking my hair from long and black to shoulder length and pink! It was a complete transformation - one I'd never done before - and completely loved. King was very patient with me and explained the bleach process and made me feel completely comfortable. He taught me how to care for my new hair and I left incredibly happy with the results. I went back maybe 6 months later to have my hair touched up and blended to make the grow out process a little more natural. This time, as mentioned, I went for a cut. As always he listened to what I wanted. What impressed me more was that he remembered things we spoke about previously even though I hadn't seen him in well over a year. He really cares about his clients and truly loves what he does. He's also super funny, so the time spent in the chair is never boring. The salon itself is very clean and they are taking caution with Covid-19 with taking temperatures, offering masks, hand sanitizer and disinfecting. It's spacious enough so you don't feel crowded. They will only do what's good or looks good for your style （my hair's bleached and they won't do perm for me b/c it will cause extra damages lol). My review is 5 months late.... but overall, really enjoyed my experience here. I highly rec to try to get your appointment during the weekdays, my app was on a Saturday at 12pm and the place was packed the whole time when I left at 8pm hence 4 stars since I had to move around the whole time to accommodate the others. Like the other reviews said, if you are looking for a fun & creative hair color, definitely do come here. It was my first time bleaching my whole hair and Chris was really gentle & attentive the whole time by checking multiple times and making sure the color was what I wanted. Patience is definitely important if you haven't had your hair bleached in a while... I sat there for 8 hours lol but he felt extremely bad & I had to reassured him that I didn't mind the whole time. However, if you think you're going to walk out with your hair bleached in another color yet thinking it will not be fried, it definitely is fried. It took me 2 months to heal my hair by using oaplex twice a week so it can go from grass to soft texture. read more

When I moved to NYC, it was hard for me to find somewhere that could do my hair exactly how I like it. I did my research on Instagram and came across Sam's Instagram. I made an appointment with him and was in LOVE with the result. When it was time for me to get a touch-up, I made another appointment with Sam and he gave me a much needed haircut and dye. Very bright, clean, music at a good volume, good vibes and pleasant atmosphere. They were quick to accommodate me with hanging up my coat, offering me something to drink and making me comfortable. Sam was on time, friendly (like always) and gave me exactly what I asked for. The service was great but the hospitality was even better. Hair turned out fine.... but service was horrible. Ended up being $300 to just be bleached, and didn't listen to what I wanted. As I was about to leave, frustrated that it took 5 hours, and made me late for another appointment, (2 hours late) they blocked the door and asked for a tip, of 20% ($57). I told them I had no cash on me... and I had to walk in the cold 4 blocks to get to the closest ATM. I specifically told them not to tone, but they did. And once I informed them I already said I didn't want it, they stopped and charged me anyways. read more

I grew my hair for two years to be able to achieve the style I wanted, and I wouldn't trust any other salon with my vision!! I noticed the multiple COVID precautions they had, my temperature was checked at the door, I was sprayed down with Lysol, and hand sanitizer was provided upon entry. I had the worst experience ever because my scalp got red and itchy the next day after dying my hair. They only bleached my hair once and let it stayed for 2.5 hours without washing it. It was extremely painful and burning during the hair coloring process. And I complained about this to them and about the chemicals they used. They didn't take any action... They keep taking so many people and without notifying me that they changed my stylist at the beginning. I only knew that my stylist was changed when I paid my tips. I spent 530 including 18% of tips just to dye my hair root and trim my hair. I used to bleach and dyed my hair and never felt painful during the process. I didn't have any discomfort after the process either. After reaching out, they denied any potential problems in the procedure without offering any solution and concluded it as my own allergies problem. the haircut and color came out fine, but i am a larger person, certainly larger than most their clients, and from the moment i walked in, i got a bunch of weird stares, and they generally treated me very poorly. they ignored me when i was telling them i was in discomfort from the bleaching process, and completely disregarded my request to not put product in my hair. i was also neglected in my seat for much longer than i was told. the process was around 3 hours, and the only time my input was acknowledged was when they asked if i thought it looked good. if you're skinny with deep pockets, go ahead, but if you take up more space than a refrigerator door, don't bother. read more

I started coming to Double Q because my stylist Sunny moved here from another salon. I trusted Sunny to turn my naturally black hair into blonde. I was nervous due to never having bleached my hair before but Sunny is a professional and recommended a balayage technique. I have gone back multiple times for a touch-up and Sunny remembers my preferences and is able to execute based on my needs. Every time I leave the chair my hair is softer (not sure how he does it with bleach) and the color is refreshed. I would keep coming back here for Sunny. Few things to note is the salon is cash only, after your session they will take pictures of your hair for the stylist portfolio and social media. They take COVID19 seriously with hand sanitizer at the door, temp checks, and a full spray down of your clothes and belongings, masks are required to stay on for the duration of your visit. I did a cut with him yesterday and I highly recommend. I followed him from &hair. I have only done cuts with him but he's awesome with color too.
