Using Yelp I decided to visit this location today for a SMOG test. With an average of 4 out of 5 stars and 367 reviews I expected to be treated fairly and at a reasonable price. My complaint is about the SMOG test price, aggravated by a very poor customer service interaction. First, the price: I was charged $98.20 - a price that was way too high and I told the women behind the counter the same. I paid the fee and as I was walking out a customer told me that all I needed to do was call first and ask for their lowest price and they would then give me the same service for $40. I went home, read the review on Yelp and sure enough MANY customers received a $39-$40 price - some asked for it and others were offered it at the SMOG station. I'm shocked and dismayed that there would be a delta of nearly $60 between prices for the same service. Next, the service: They pulled my car into the garage bay, and within minutes pulled it back out again. I was informed that my car had failed the inspection and that it could not be tested because the emission codes had reset - likely due to a dead battery and/or a battery replacement. I was also informed that I needed to go to a dealer to have this fixed. I insisted that my battery had not died nor been replaced and the lady at the counter was fairly insistent that it must have happened. She then proceeded to give me the test results for a different car. They had confused my car with someone else's and rather than double check I had to stand my ground and debate for awhile before they discovered their error. They then proceeded to test my car and it passed. This was tedious and uncomfortable, but I must say the woman behind the counter was nice about it in the end. My biggest concern here was that if I hadn't pressed the issue I might have left, gone to a dealer (and all of the hassle that goes along with making an appointment, dropping my car off etc) just to find out that my car did not have a problem. read more

I'm a first time customer here and received excellent customer service from Val yesterday. I needed to do a smog check for my vehicle registration, since even though we're in a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CA DMV is still requiring people to smog their vehicles, so after speaking to a DMV customer service representative over the telephone who told me what questions to ask to find a safe place, I called several shops. Some were still open for repair, but not doing smogs including the shop where I previously went to for smog checks and some were rude and didn't want to answer my questions. I am at very high risk due to health conditions and would not survive if I contracted the virus, so was very apprehensive and concerned about getting a smog check during this crisis the world is in, but I need to drive my vehicle daily since I am the caretaker for my 98 year old mother. When I called Dougherty Road Smog, I was treated kindly and with respect and my questions were all answered that the DMV told me to ask. I was told that I would be allowed to drive my vehicle to the bay and stay inside and that they do wear a mask and gloves. And that I could even use my own pen to sign if I wanted to, which I didn't even think to ask! When I arrived, Val wore a mask and gloves and treated me with understanding and respect just as I was treated on the phone. I wore a mask and gloves and had disenfect wipes with me too. It was very nice to have someone like Val that understood my concerns and that protecting yourself and customers was a priority just as protecting myself and others is a priority to me. People like Val restore my faith in humanity. Thank you for making my day Val; your kindness meant more than you will ever know! Originally I went to another place first for smog checking, but they had issues with their machine so they sent me here. This place is tucked away in the back and parking can be hard to find sometimes. The guy at the desk was friendly and got me in and out in a good amount of time. I think my total wait time from when I walked in, filled out the paper work, got the smog check and left was about 35-40 minutes and there was 1 person already getting their smog checked when I arrived. The cost was $80 for the check and like $10 for tax and certificate with my total cost being $90.70 (maybe higher than most because I was smog testing to sell a car?). The reasons for not having a higher score was because the lack of parking available (i had to park and block 2 cars in because no spots were left) and because they were getting their front door replaced so it was FREEZING cold in the waiting room. read more

My wife took her Camry to this place on a whim and because we had a coupon we received in the mail. These guys are the real deal when they say we can get you out in 15-20 minutes, depending on the number of cars ahead of you. That's exact the way it works--first come first serve. Although there was one car ahead of ours, the technican was generally nice and didn't give us the runaround, especially with the coupon discount. Our car passed without an issue. Please do yourself a favor and don't go to this business. Unless you like to be treated in a rude manner and talked down upon. I totally agree with other reviewers who have had a bad experience here. I walked in to get a smog test and was checking on prices. And just questioned why their rates were so high. They quoted $90.00 whereas one can get one for flat $25.00. This first rep then quoted me $60 with a coupon. And I was still wondering why it was so high. And this punk like man came from behind the counter and talking rudely. He flashed a $29.00 coupon and said , "Here! Do you like this?" And told the other guy to honor that coupon. And then he mentioned in a very rude tone, "you're gonna pay what you asked for. We are gonna add other service fees to this coupon and you are gonna be paying $60!" I was taken aback by this horrible experience. And I asked him why he was being so abrupt. The next thing he started calling me rude and he took a picture of my license plate and mentioned that he would complain to the DMV. Either this employee is on drugs or one Unhappy person. I have a love/hate relationship with this place after my recent visit. The service was very quick and to the point, however the customer service was terrible. I went in saying I had a coupon for $25.99 and the guy said no its for $29.99 and I just let it go because I didn't want to argue over $4.00. When the test was done and I was ready to pay I showed the guy the coupon for $25.99 and he said oh ok so it'll be $49.00 instead of $40 then since you want to use the coupon.... Uhhhh what?? After he charged me the $49.00 I asked how it went from 40 to 49 and he said he was giving me a deal for $40 but I wanted to use my coupon.. Come on now, I was trying to save a few dollars just give me the best option I can get. I got him to return my $49 and charge me the $40 but he made me feel like I was ruining his day and I still don't really get how my $25.99 coupon ended up really being $49.00. I can find a lot of other smog check centers with the same deals, next time ill go somewhere else to avoid the bad customer service. read more

I needed a smog desperately on an older pickup as my water pump went out in my other vehicle. It had been a rough week and I was desperately searching out the best prices. Steve the owner quoted me a great price over the phone(half of what the others in town were), but it didn't include the cost of an additional test needed. But when I got there he HONORED his quote! That is rare to find in this day and age and was so needed in my life I almost cried! His employees are great also! They are a little hard to find as they sit in the back of a narrow drive that they share with quality tune up and another auto shop. It is worth the look though. This is the Only Smog shop I go to and refer many others to also. Great customer service, very quick to get you in and out. There is always a coupon in the mail or online, but even if there wasn't one I would still choose this shop due to the previous mentioned reasons. If you don't know exactly where it is, it can be easy to miss. It's a very small shop so look for the blue roll up doors; it'll be at the end of the row from the "Discount Quality Auto Repair". Despite its size they work fast. I got in at 12:15, and literally out the door by 12:25. They report to have new smog machines that cut the analysis time down to a minimum. With that said, it was a Saturday and there was no wait so I can't vouch for a busy weekday during peak hours. Friendly and fast. Better than any where else I've ever gone. read more
