Predatory Warranty Sales, Incompetent Service, and $1,050 Wasted on a Unfixed Car ​DO NOT buy an extended warranty from Douglass Volkswagen, and DO NOT trust their service department. ​The sales team is phenomenal at talking you into expensive extended warranties with big promises that "anything goes wrong, just bring it back and we'll take care of it." But the moment you actually need help, the service department is dishonest, incompetent, and completely unequipped to fix basic issues. ​Here is my exact timeline with Douglass Volkswagen: ​1. The 1-Month Wait for an Emergency AC Breakdown ​Bought my car 5 months ago along with an expensive 80,000-mile warranty forced on me at purchase. ​5 months in, during the peak of summer, the AC completely stopped blowing air. ​Called service department: They refused to see me sooner and forced me to wait a full month for an appointment, basically telling me to drive without air conditioning or figure it out myself. ​2. The Tow, The $600 Battery, and Zero Diagnosis ​While waiting for my appointment, the car developed a hard start issue. The day before my appointment, the car died completely. ​Paid $300 for a tow truck to get it to the dealership. ​Explained all issues to the service advisor (Marvin): AC completely down, hard start, and check engine lights on. ​Marvin called back stating the battery was dead and it would cost $600 (not covered by warranty). I authorized the battery change. He assured me everything was checked and working, including the AC. ​3. $150 Uber Ride to Pick Up a Completely Unfixed Car ​Took a $150 Uber to the dealership, handed over $600 for the battery replacement, and went out to start my car right on their lot. ​Results before I even left their driveway: ​Check Engine Light was STILL ON. ​AC was blowing ZERO air. ​I brought the advisor and staff out to the car and asked, "Can you feel any air?" They couldn't. ​A technician ridiculously claimed the touchscreen was "dusty" or that I needed a whole touchscreen system replacement--completely ignoring basic car logic that a total lack of air movement points to a blower motor or electrical issue. ​When I pressed them on how they could charge me $600 and claim it was fixed, the staff dismissively told me: "If you're not satisfied, you can just leave the car here." No offer to help, no rental, no accountability--just complete apathy for the fact that I'd be stranded again with massive Uber bills. ​4. Local Mechanic Fixed It in 2 Minutes ​I left at 6:00 PM with the exact same unfixed car I brought in. ​Stopped at a local gas station/mechanic. Within 2 minutes, the local mechanic diagnosed the real problem: a dead blower motor. ​Went to AutoZone, bought a blower motor for $109, and paid $100 labor. The local mechanic had it replaced and blowing cold air in 7 minutes flat. ​To top it off, the service advisor later texted me claiming they checked everything and that "warranties don't pay them enough to diagnose cars." ​The Bottom Line ​Douglass Volkswagen took $1,050 out of my pocket ($300 tow + $150 Uber + $600 battery) and handed my car back in the exact same broken state. A local shop diagnosed and fixed in 10 minutes what this dealership couldn't figure out in a whole month. ​They sell you high-priced warranties under false pretenses, refuse to do real diagnostic work, and charge exorbitant fees for easy repairs while leaving you stranded. Before I begin my review of my experience at Douglas Volkswagen dealership, I want to speak about my ordeal with 6 other dealerships trying to get the vehicle I wanted. I stopped into numerous dealerships in search of the car I've been trying to purchase over a span of 6 months. I dealt with scums, some honest, and informative people. Although this was my first time "purchasing" a vehicle I'm well experienced in sales and have a bit more common sense than the average buyer. I've done my research and got all my documents and paperwork prepared. I'm 22, not so much credit/poor credit, I figured I'd need a cosigner. I tried to go the solo route, of course I was turned down. I figured because I'm young, no credit really established. Okay, so I got a cosigner, great credit and was approved for a 35k car, days prior to sitting down with an Chevrolet dealer. We were turned down yet again, I'm shocked. I'm thinking how can we get turned down when another bank approved for a 35k car, which was a bit more than the car I wanted? I thought all hope was lost, after stumbling across Douglas Volkswagen dealership on cars.com I was desperate, I received a phone call from a Roger, saying he could get me approved for 20k with just my credit alone. I jumped on it, came into the dealership days later. Was informed this Roger would have someone else assist me, I sat down with Dave. This guy was/is awesome. He was straightforward with me, told me everything I needed to know. There was a discrepancy on my credit about some loans my brother took out for school and somehow it showed up on my credit report Dave informed me. Other dealerships wouldn't touch it, let alone tell me about it. That was the reason I was being denied. The fact Dave was honest with me, he earned my business. It's not over yet, this guy bent over backwards for me. Not only did he put me in the car I wanted, a 5th gen White Camaro, from a Volkswagen dealership right? Haha. He had it personally shipped in from California, no charge, I could test drive it and if I didn't, Try something else. He texted pictures of the car information to me and kept in contact with me almost everyday. Upon arrival to the dealership to finish all the necessary paperwork, he mentioned the car suffered some minor bumper damage, just a few scratches off the paint due to the freight. Offered to repaint it when the weather permits. I was more than pleased with his hardwork, honestly and just being a real guy. I fell in love with the car and we even took pictures together as I was leaving the lot with it. Almost 2 weeks later, car is still beautiful and I'm grateful to Douglas Volkswagen and especially Dave. In conclusion, people like this are hard to come by. During the past 3 years Dominic was truly exceptional in handling all my service needs. So when I decided to lease a mid-size car it was a no-brainer; I submitted an online inquiry to Douglas VW for a Passat . Dan Beckelman their internet person put me in contact with Tito Delgado a very knowledgeable Sales Rep who negotiated a great lease deal on the Passat and got me good trade-in price on my old Saab 9-3. Dan B. kept in contact with me through the whole process insuring I was completely satisfied. I have dealt with many new car dealerships in my quest to purchased several new vehicles in the past 40+ years. Douglas VW is the only dealership I had a sense of loyalty too. Dan, Tito, Chris and Dominic showed interest, concern, made me feel comfortable, offered good advice , actually helped me negotiate good offers and never tried to pressure me in any way. The service department at Douglas is superior to other dealerships I have dealt with in the past. I usually wait for them to complete the service to my Jetta. Once within a half hour Dominic called me over to tell me that it would take several hours to complete and put me into a loaner. With other dealerships I can tell you horror stories. From a salesperson who walked away with my license and did not return for over an hour and a half and then has the nerve to be angry when I did not want to deal with him, to having to bring back a new minivan for service at least twice a month for almost a year before they finally correctly fixed the problem. Please don't misunderstand me, I have dealt with other good dealerships, but I consider Douglas VW among the best. read more

I stepped into Douglas VW to test drive a 2003 Passat. It had low miles and was in great condition mechanically so I decided to try and purchase it. I am a student with a college budget and have to be very frugal with my money so my hopes weren't set too high with financing a new car. My salesman, Simon, was very personable and understood what that budget was like. I had a hard time getting approved for a loan because of both the price of the car and age as well as me still building credit. I was approved for one loan but they needed the money in 36 months and I could not afford the payments. They had even lowered the price of the car to help me try and get a loan. Due to the fact that it was Saturday, the finance manager as well and Simon had told me that they will keep trying and let me know by Monday. On Monday they called me in to talk about the situation. Simon said they had kept pushing for different loan companies and presented me with a 48 month loan that would get me much lower payments than I could have ever hoped for. Douglas VW delivered above and beyond my expectations for a dealership. I have had dealership experiences in the past that were far from pleasant but Douglas VW put me above cloud 9 and I cannot shake this happiness. Simon, as well as the service team has restored my faith into VW and now I want to continue a brand loyalty with their company and this would not have been made possible without the excellent service that my salesman had provided. When I decide to get a new Volkswagen, Douglas VW is where I will be picking it up because they genuinely care about their customers as well as their product and will be more than happy to be their customer. I am so thankful for the experience I had as well as the salesman that worked out the deal and I cannot even put to words how happy I am today. Honestly I can say it was the best car buying experience I've ever had. Simon Krugly and Douglas VW are so far ahead of other dealerships, even the ones I've also had good experiences with. I went in looking for a very specific GTI (I had done my homework and already knew there were none in a rather large area close). Simon showed me another GTI he had, made sure I liked it and gave me great numbers. Once those were agreed on, Douglas and Simon went out of their way to find me my GTI (which was 400 or so miles away) and get it to me very very quickly. Prior to this GTI experience I had been talking to Simon for a year, and made multiple visits. He was NEVER pressuring, but always treated me seriously and talked to me for hours on end without trying to rush anything or push a car. He waited until I was ready and then he did everything he could. Beyond the great experience I had with Simon accommodating my weird schedule and picky GTI choices, the finance department was quick and easy. They have a very cool digital table where you sign documents (not to mention it costs as much as my GTI haha). Overall I cannot recommend Douglas and Simon enough. They are one of few dealerships who care about the sale, but most importantly care about making the sale work best for you. Thank you Douglass Auto for a Superb Experience. I was a little down on my luck and in desperate need for a vehicle. I took a chance and inquired online for a preowned vehicle within my budget. I got a call from Irene from Douglass right away inwhich I explained my situation. I faxed all my information and In less than 2 hrs she called me back with 3 different approvals and many vehicle options. My financial and family needs were taken into great conideration.The leg work started Tuesday morning and Saturday morning my family and I walked into the dealership and got nothing but courteous and professional service. Just bought a brand new 2011 silver Tiguan SE 4Motion from Douglas Volkswagen. My wife loves the "Tiggy". First time buying a new vehicle over the web, was quite an experience. The first round with the local dealers, I'm from Brooklyn, was disappointing as not one of them responded properly, you know with a real $$$ quote. All we got was a bunch of "Come on down so we can seperate you from your cash" emails and phone calls. Almost gave up at that point. Then we found Zag and tried again with the online quotes, of which Douglas was one of three respondents. We decided to take a chance on a Saturday afternoon and wound up travelling from Brooklyn out to Summit, NJ to look around. What a great place! Nick Malanga was a class act all the way. He put up with my insistence to not only test drive the dealer's Tiguan, Nick also took the vehcile that we were going to buy off the showroom floor so we could test drive that one too! And then we decided not to purchase the vehicle then and there!! Imagine that. But Nick was a gentleman, and even offered to hold the Tig until Monday AM for us. On our second car from Douglas, same salesman, Nick Malanga, has been helpful and pleasant to deal with. Our first car, a GTI was great and a lot of fun, but unfortunately we outgrew it. After moving to a small GM SUV for a few years we decided to go back to something a little more fun to drive so we headed to Douglas and got a great trade in value on the GM and picked up a 2014 Jetta GLI. So far so good. After a day of driving it the engine light came on and we thought CRAP! Headed back to the dealer and it turns out the gas cap wasn't screwed on by an attendant so the politely tightened it up and reset the light. Quick and easy. They've been fair and always courteous to deal with and didn't try to sell us anything by wheel insurance after the sale, which from our first VW experience we found out is a great deal. Highly recommend the dealer and our salesman Nick. PS, on our first visit in Nick was busy so we dealt with Duncan, a nice young man who was happy to show us around and give us few test drives even though he knew it wasn't his sale since the dealer has a return customer policy to your original sales person if they are still there. While the Jetta we eventually ended up with checked all of our family needs, the leasing experience we with Isaac surpassed all other dealerships I encountered and ultimately was the deciding factor. Isaac was extremely responsive, forthright in our conversations, and very easy to work with. He was knowledgeable about the car, which was refreshing as in other dealerships I felt like I had done more research than the person trying to sell me the vehicle. He was patient with our decision making and took the time to address many of the detailed questions we had regarding the leasing process. My wife and I were in the market for a small SUV with good all wheel drive traction capabilities in the winter (as a second family car for my wife) and saw that Douglas was a ten minute drive from our house. We stopped by to test drive the Volkswagen Tiguan and were told that Simon Krugly would be helping us with the test drive. The whole process from beginning to end was so smooth thanks to Simon and his cool natured behavior. Finally when we sat down and got to talking pricing for the 3 year lease, we asked that Simon retrieve the lease information for $0 down, $1500 down, and $3000 down for the S and SE with appearance packages. When he quickly came back, he saw that we were unhappy with the pricing and asked us what it would take for us to sign the paperwork that day. We gave him our price and after briefly speaking with his sales manager, he came back and said "Congratulations on the new car!" Great guy, great experience, even better car. I am not a frequent car buyer, but after 10 years with my last car, it was time for a change. I shopped around at 4 VW and 3 Chevy dealers in NJ and Douglas came up as the best value for my money. The reason? Tito Delgato and VW's Passat TDI! Tito was fantastic, there was not a lot silly bargaining going on, I gave them the price I thought was fair for the new car as well as my trade in, and we quickly agreed to a deal. I thought this was all well and good, then came the delivery. Tito walked my wife and I through all the new gadgets on the car (and there are thousands!!!) spending over an hour explaining how each option worked (coolest has to be the list of diesel stations and what they charge per gallon). From setting up the Bluetooth to operating the nav system (just a few features my last car didn't have) and everything in between. I can honestly say that if you are in the market for a new (and fuel efficient) car, do yourself a favor and pay Tito Delgato at Douglas VW a visit! You will be glad you did!! read more

have just returned from a service appointment on my 2000 Jetta, which I purchased from Douglas in October 1999. Since I live in Manhattan, there are certainly more convenient options for servicing my vehicle, but other than the occasional oil change, I make a point of traveling to Summit, because I know that Rick will take good care of me and my vehicle. Initially, my service representative was Frank Miller (I think that was his name). Frank did a great job, too, but I feel that Rick always goes the extra mile for his customers. I feel confident that he really knows the business, and makes sure that every aspect of the vehicle is in tip-top shape. This is particularly important now that the car is getting older (although it only has about 65,000 miles). Rick is also an all-around nice guy, and I overhear him with other customers, and he shows that same friendly, competent manner to everyone. Douglas should be proud to have Rick on its staff. This was my first experience of purchasing a new/pre-owned car. After some initial online sleuthing and searching to figure out what I was looking for I discovered that Douglas VW in Summit had a few pre-owned certifieds that would fit into the scope of what I was looking for. I simply drove on up and popped my head in to have a look at what was listed as available. I was introduced to Simon Krugly rather immediately and he walked me through what would become my first car-buying experience. Knowing I would have some issues with lack of credit, they made sure I was able to get the financing I needed and within 48 hours I was driving away in a 2011 GTI. Aside from Simon being innately personable and efficient, I never once felt like I was dealing with a car salesman. That being said, all my transactions with Douglass (4 in the last decade: 1 purchase 3 leases) have been an absolute pleasure on my end. I've worked with Chris Ng on the sales end and Dominick Romano in Service for the last 4 years and I cannot compliment these guys enough on their ability to please me, the customer. As a dealership, Douglas extends to you the feel, customer service, and amenities of a luxury dealership. That's not an attack on the VW line of cars, but I'm always happily surprised to experience the same or better treatment at Douglass when I drop off my GTI as compared to my experience servicing our higher priced BMW X5. Rental Vehicles, drop off service, free wifi and beverages at the service desk are what I've come to expect from any dealership these days. Many dealerships out there cannot deliver. We stopped by Douglass during our shopping for a new VW. Upon entering the dealership we were promptly greeted by Jimmy, one of the sales representatives. We let Jimmy know that we already knew what model, color, etc. we were interested in and Jimmy skipped the normal getting-to-know-you and preliminary sales stuff. No, he went right to work in answering our questions and giving us the price quotes (lease/purchase) we asked for. We had a very nice, polite, friendly chat and we left without making a deal. What we appreciated, when we told Jimmy that we needed to go home and think things over, was the fact that Jimmy didn't try to hold us there by insisting that we tell him what it would take to make a deal right on the spot. That is professionalism. We called later that same day to make the deal. The delivery process was another PLUS by Jimmy ... he was able to get the car delivered to us much more quickly than we expected. read more

He knew I was a young kid who didn't know much about buying a car or getting approved for any kind of financing, so he walked me through the whole process. He showed me what banks look at when giving out loans and how different aspects of my credit history would affect their decision. He even gave me tips on how to improve my credit in the future. He was completely transparent with me every step of the way. Even with my terrible credit Dave got me approved. He even went a step further and helped me get affordable car insurance, something he did not have to do. The whole process was extremely quick and painless... I recently got a 2011 Tiguan at Douglas in Summit . This is my 2nd car leased with Isaac Bunton in the sales dept. He is by far the BEST! Isaac went above and beyond to get me the price that I could afford....and researched and found the color I wanted that was sent over from another dealership. I would recommend him to anyone that is looking for a genuine salesman that is professional, knowledgeable and makes car shopping/buying fun. I never felt pressured or rushed into anything and he was extremely patient while I test drove 3 different models and finally chose the Tiguan. He picked up on the one I really liked immediately and made sure I was happy and got me exactly what I wanted.
