We shared two flights of wine & bought a mixed case to take home. The 2 dessert wines -- 2021 Tobacco Barn Dried White Blend & Block #2 Ruby Dessert Wine -- are standouts. We really like Doukenie. We visited twice. They are very welcoming. The staff is very friendly. The wine is very good, some of the best we have had in Loudoun County. I like their petite Verdot best, other dry reds are very nice. What makes this place special is the way they make you feel welcome. I feel like a farming family is very proud to share the thing they produce and to share the surrounding property. It is so relaxing and casual on the property. Beautiful setting in western Loudoun County for a wine tasting or even just to relax with a glass of wine. We were greeted quickly and offered seating inside their main tasting room or outside in the conditioned tent. We went for the tent which also had live music at the time, and a great view overlooking their fishing pond. Our server was excellent throughout. We went with their red and mixed wine flights. Some of the reds were quite good- the Alethia blend was a personal favorite. It was a very relaxing experience in a great setting that I'm sure we will be back for. read more

Where we were seated we consistently had to move for the staff to get by which felt like we were constantly in the way and couldn't fully enjoy ourselves even though that's where we were seated. Wow, what a beautiful winery! As soon as you pull into the driveway lined by perfectly spaced trees, you know you're in for a treat. The inside of the winery is spacious and offers lots of seating. The outdoor area is even more impressive with tons of seats on the patio plus lawn style chairs surrounding the little pond. It was the middle of the day on a Thursday and the place was pretty quiet with just a few other patrons. One of the staff members (maybe an owner?) mentioned how tough it is to get people to come out on a weekday. I imagine that even on a weekend, you can probably still have plenty of privacy and space to stretch out due to the gorgeous layout of the place. I chose to enjoy a mixed flight of red, white, and pink wines while hanging out on the lawn. It was sooo relaxing to sip my wine while taking in the views of the pond and surrounding mountains. This is a great spot for bird watching. After I finished my flight, I walked around the grounds a bit and through the vineyards. What a dream! The man who was serving me encouraged me to explore and walk around the pond a bit. I felt very welcomed and like I could take my time enjoying the space. I definitely will be back to Doukenie hopefully on another day that was as nice as this one. read more

Bustling winery with nice firepits, but it's a bummer that kids and dogs are NOT allowed and can't bring your own food. While the tables are socially distanced 6 feet apart and the servers wear masks, the winery was packed with an uppity vibe. Glad we made an online reservation for the firepits as nearly every table was filled outside. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating (covered in a tent and around firepits). The firepits kept us warm and cozy while it was snowing! Wine isn't sold by the glass and only through tasting and bottle. The tastings are bit pricey at $12 and the bottles are over $20 and range between $25-$65. I wasn't a big fan of the off-dry white wines with less than 1% residual sugar and glad I went with the Hope's Legacy Raspberry Wine and worth the $24 price tag. The Hope's Legacy Raspberry Wine is quite jammy and tastes like a port dessert wine with 70% Red Wine Blend and 30% Raspberry Juice. While it's on the sweeter side, it's not too sweet and pairs really well with jam, soft cheese, and chocolate. My hubby and I ordered a feast! The jammy Fig spread is delicious and pairs well with the Hope's Legacy Raspberry Wine along with the savory Rosemary Crostini crackers and garlicky Boursin Gournay herb cheese with a spicy kick. The extensive finger food menu includes a variety of cheeses, crackers, meats, charcuterie boards, dips, and s'mores kits! There aren't any hot meals. I believe all of the food is packaged (aside from the sandwiches) and none of it is made on site. The Conche S'mores kit (you can make 4 s'mores) was a hit! I had so much fun roasting the housemade marshmallows by the firepit. We ended up saving some to make at home (still have it!). Sweet way to end the evening! Doukenie Winery is a great spot for date night, but I enjoyed the more laid-back Hiddencroft Winery a mile away where my pup and daughter were welcomed. read more

My husband and a group of our friends were excited to try this winery. We came because a singer we love was performing. It states on the website that there are spaces that are 21 and over and this included the area where the music is. Of course, we assumed that the children friendly area would still be able to hear the music even if we weren't directly in the area where the live music was being played. Upon arriving at the winery, we were told that the indoor and outdoor area closest to the property was no children (and we had one 6 month old in our party). Due to this, the staff informed us that our entire party had to move to sit in a location on the other side of the winery where you could not even hear the live music (which was why we even chose this winery). While walking to the gazebo, it began to torrential downpour on us and our young child. Susan, the manager, was requested repeatedly to come speak to us. Her staff was forced to run through the rain to reach us at the gazebo where we were sat alone, being rained on because they had not put the sides of the gazebo down. Susan herself did not want to get wet and walk out to the gazebo in the rain like she had us do with a baby and her staff do repeatedly. (They could hardly serve us wine as they would have had to run through the rain with anything we ordered.) At this point the rain was blowing into the gazebo due to the fact that the sides were not down. Finally when the rain died down an exception was made to allow us to sit under the pavilion where the music was being played. Overall, the experience was ruined by this treatment. The server, Haley, was an absolute sweetheart and made the experience a little better. The wine was not the best honestly. The flights were served in plastic cups with soup crackers and when we received actual wine glasses they were spotty and dirty. No new glasses were given for different types of wine, which did not bother me but some of my friends seemed upset by this. The winery is pretty, but does not have the views that other wineries in the area offer. There is a lake and a LOT of geese and ducks which means a lot of poop in the areas surrounding the building. I definitely will not be returning after the treatment from the manager Susan. Also it seems weird that there is not a children friendly area that isn't completely removed from the main building and everything else. If you have children you will be banished to the other side of the winery. Very disappointing. Ended the day at Flying Ace which was the only highlight of going to Doukenie. If you want to visit a beautiful winery with the worst service, this is it. I had huge hopes foe this place because it sits on a lake and the winery is beautiful. That's where the excitement ends. We made reservations and were seated inside by a nice hostess. Then we sat. We waited as others who came after us got served and had their flights before us. Finally when our server showed up, he took our orders before we can ask for anything else, he walked away. Then when we were ready check out and we went up to the bar and tried to get his attention without success. Our server stood near the bar and talked the entire time to another person, I really thought he was off his shift because he made eye contact with us and turned back to his conversation. Another server noticed us trying, and helped us instead after she noticed we were standing there for awhile. She was very nice and apologized for the other server. She shouldn't have to apologize for someone else, but she did. The entire process, just to pay at the bar, took more than 15 minutes. When you're being ignored while your server is carrying on a conversation, it's a very long time. It was already weird to me that the tasting room were still serving flights in plastic cups but I was floored at how underwhelming the experience was. I went here a few weeks ago. My friend was able to reserve a fire pit for free using the Tock app. That alone was a plus as some establishments charge you to make a fire pit reservation. I was greeted upon arrival and escorted to the fire pit. There was plenty of space between the tables and guests outside. We tried their wine tasting. The wine tasting was fine and reasonably priced. Our server checked on us regularly. An employee would come by and add more logs to the fire pit. The weather was in the 50s. The fire pit kept us warm but it produced so much smoke. Even if I moved away when he was adding logs to the fire pit, the smoke followed you. By the time I returned home I smelled as if I had been grilling outdoors all day and preparing a feast for my friends. My clothes smelled like smoke for about a week. I have to agree with some other recent reviews that the smoke was overwhelming. The wine was fine. They had a decent food selection on the menu. Since I smelled like smoke, it made sense for me to purchase some bbq at a nearby restaurant on my way home. I may try this place again when they don't have fire pits outdoors. read more

The lady overheard my conversation with the Doukenie staff person. She asked me what wineries I had wine club memberships with. When I shared that information - she proceeded to lecture me on why I should cancel those wine club memberships and ONLY support Doukenie. Pretty arrogant. We've been members here for years (until today). During covid, they decided to make change from being family friendly to kids (and pets) only being allowed outside. During covid we understood. Fast forward to today and they have decided to keep the policy. The point blatantly rubbed in our face today. It started raining and we had our kids with us. We were "allowed" to sit under a small table with an umbrella that provided some coverage. Even as members, we were not allowed inside or under the large mostly empty pavilion to ensure staying dry. We knew the policy so while not thrilled....ok. THEN, while we were minding our own business in a damp fashion making the most of it, the Manager came up to the table to interrupt our family and 'remind us this was a one time thing they allowed bc of the rain' and made it appoint to state it multiple times and throw in it also applies to dogs. He kept going despite seeing he was really making us angry and didn't stop until he felt comfortable telling us what a nice favor they did for us but we should never expect that again. Noted. In conclusion, it's entirely their decision on who to serve and how. While they exercise their right to set rules to the detriment of families, we will exercise ours to cancel membership, never go back and share this experience here so everyone with kids can decide for themselves if they want to reward this mentality with business. FYI, The wine itself is middle of the pack in the area. Certainly drinkable but for us not good enough to deal with the above. read more

Unfortunately this is not a good fit for us. It is not the right place for families with kids, since they are not allowed indoors like all the wineries nearby. I can't have my daughter outside all the time when is below 40 degrees. Second, it is the only winery that does not allow food from outside when the other wineries do, moreover, in their menu they do not have real food unless you want to eat only salami nuggets for 15 usd. Third, they believe they are Napa wine, their bottles cost average 40-50.00. So, I canceled my membership. I recommend the Sunset winery, it is a mile away. read more

I've been a member at this winery for almost 15 years. It's been great to watch them grow. I feel like they have done a great job throughout the pandemic. I don't have kids, so I actually appreciate that they've created designated areas for kids and dogs. Initially I was opposed to the reservation system, but I've never had trouble getting a spot on short notice and it takes the guess work out of finding a place to sit. I'm not wild about the no outside food rule but they have finally expanded their menu to offer gluten free items so I can actually eat something. We went yesterday and the wine was tasting as great as ever. Discounts for long time club members are quite generous. Is this winery for everyone? The guy was great but they should consider moving the music outside(or elsewhere)so the wine tastings can be conducted in a better manner. I threw off everyone. I sat there for 15 min with multiple waiters passing me by. The guy playing the guitar had to stop his set and ask that I be waited on. Turned out I think the wait staff "didn't know" I was there because I hadn't been seated there. Maybe I'm a ghost today??? Eventually someone showed up and took my order. The wine (I had the Vinters Reserve) was very tasty! I also ordered a greek salad, which the waitress brought without dressing. I had wait another 10 min for someone to come by who I could ask for dressing. Overall, the winery is beautiful! Wine was very good! The staff seems a bit snobby which is why I give 4 stars. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars but the food was good, the waitress I FINALLY got was nice, and the property and music was nice! I do like that there are no kids allowed or pets. No longer a family friendly winery so this went from being our favorite winery to one that I would no longer recommend. It's unfortunate because this was our go to place but it has declined for several reasons: Most importantly kids are no longer welcome inside or in any heated location. I was told that I could park my 3 month old in front of a fire pit for warmth. Despite being heritage club members, I don't have access to the inside if my infant is with me (pretty ridiculous policy). The experience has also declined because the tastings are done with plastic Dixie cups and you don't have an actual pourer discussing the wines. They just drop off your wine in Dixie cups and check on you once per hour. Thirdly, no outside food is allowed and the sandwiches offered are reminiscent of a middle school cafeteria. The difference is they cost as if they were from a mid range restaurant. Finally, the prices now rival Napa. I like their wine but paying nearly $50 bottle is silly. If you don't have kids and are looking for a place to sit and drink a glass with no one else around, this would fit the bill, but if you're interested in eating food or if you have a family, I would look elsewhere. read more

We've now been to Doukenie several times and I seem to like it more and more with each visit. The tasting room is a little on the small size, but the wine and service make up for it. We had a tasting with 7 wines and I enjoyed all of them. We settled on a bottle of the vintners reserve, but like the others too. The cab sauv was quite delicious and a very close second choice for me. Although the weather was cold, the outside area is gorgeous and includes a cute little pond. The last cute touch is that they give you baklava with the purchase of a bottle. It's made by the 94 year niece of the original owners who lives on the property. COVID is no longer an excuse, so get rid of the 'reservations; being pushed to sit in a particular spot when there's plenty of seating everywhere is just silly'. I would love to come back here in the beauty of the summer but on a decent March day it wasn't too bad. We stopped here after an initial wine tasting at another winery and this place was fairly packed for a late (4pm) Sunday afternoon. We were walked to the tasting area and the main area was fairly busy but I saw a sign they were closing at 5 for a special event. I think the hours here are not as comparative to some of the other wineries in NOVA because even on weekends it's not open any later than 6, which in the summer, is still light but I guess comes with the local road territory. The wine tasting had 9 wines for $10 which was pretty decent. All their wines were fairly decent and it's probably because this is one of the oldest wineries in the area. With that tag comes the hefty price tag...the cheapest bottle of good wine (Merlot) was $37??? Look I understand, it's grown local, etc etc but that's really expensive and of course if you are a member, the price is reduced. While I see the merit in the membership structure, it's not sustainable for all people, especially me who lives a good 1.5 hours away. Also, how many memberships can one have in order to get a bottle of wine for under $35? It's really not a good price for anyone except those horse country folk who often happen to frequent these places. Normal folk or mid 20 folk can't afford here and go crazy buying wine and we should be you're demographic. Prices aside, the pros were definitely the property, the fact they have rotating food trucks on premise, and the beautiful tasting room. Also, supposdly you get a piece of the owners homemade Baklava when you leave which the lady who rang us up, did not include. We actually were able to get a sliver of it on the way out. Now maybe I'm nit picking but after spending $40 I can't even get enough tasty Baklava to take a true bite of? Rip off (however when you get more than a bite, it is amazing). We got to meet the owner and she had enough personality to fill the room. On the other hand, the lady helping us with our tasting was polite but we almost felt like we were annoying her with the questions we asked. Only after 15 minutes did she finally loosen up and decide to answer our questions about the styles of wine and actually showed like she didn't hate customer service. Also, when she got my ID she starred at it so long and didn't know where the age was listed? Look I 100% want to come back here for another try when the grass is green and I'm generally in a better mood but not sure if I will buy another bottle, which of course, was dropped by someone in my party when we got home so I spent $40 on broken glass :( read more

What is it with the Greeks and their wine? This is the second Greek-American winery I've been to this month, and maybe the 4th this year - and just in Virginia. But even in an area known for its winery trails, Doukénie really stood out, so I happily give them 5 stars. Doukénie is mid-sized by Virginia standards; they own or manage 55 acres under vine and produce 5,000 cases/year. They are also one of the older wineries in the area, having been founded in the late 1980s by a heart doctor (obviously he understood early on that a glass a day is healthy for you). The family history is very cool; that doctor is the grandson of a Greek emigrant named Doukénie, and it was Doukénie's daughter Hope (now in her 90s) who nudged her son to plant grapes. In fact, Hope still bakes baklava for guests. While I've never seen an ugly winery, Doukénie really stands out, especially among wineries this size. They have a really nice pond outside next to the deck. Let's just say there's a reason they are a perennial contender for Virginia's favorite tasting room. It's a shame it was raining because I would have loved to sit outside, although at least we had the benefit of having the place to ourselves. My group was early so we were showered with attention by our tasting associate. Doukénie's tasting sheets have tasting notes, but she preferred to ask what "You" think you taste first rather than lead you with what "they" say. Their wines trended towards dry & medium-bodied, although that seems to change slightly year-to-year. What I tried: 2015 Pinot Gris: Bright, some apple notes. Petty good 2014 Chardonnay: Definitely a summer-themed drink; light bodied with lime notes. 2015 Mandolin white blend (named after grandma Doukénie's actual mandolin): Grassy & melon flavors. Blend of Traminette and Vidal. This is the closest they have to a semi-sweet, although it was still only barely that. 2014 Merlot: Medium bodied, strong plumb notes and a very nice finish. 2014 Zeus: This is perhaps their signature wine, and the blend changes year-to-year. Last year was my favorite vintage since it had a lot of Tannat, but this blend had only a splash of it. But I still enjoyed it. 2014 Sangiovese: This was actually a members wine, but with a little bit of schmoozing (OK - begging) we got a sample. Typically these wines are light bodied, but they added some Petit Syrah and Tannat to give it body & structure. Seriously, this blew me away. Great advertisement for membership in their wine club! 2014 Vintner's Reserve (red blend): Soft, green pepper on the nose, medium to full bodied and good complexity. Very good! 2014 Cab Sav: Soft, light to medium bodied. Liked it but after the last several it didn't stand out. Hope's Legacy: Desert wine with raspberry notes, but too sweet for me. One last thing about the tasting notes. Our server had perhaps the best tasting description ever, saying "This wine pairs well with Gilmore Girls". I swear, my two friends just LOST IT. **Rating is for bistro night only** We've not been here for a regular tasting, but a friend told me she was a big fan and that we should check it out. Of course it would have been more helpful had we made it for a tasting, but we didn't mind. The tastings ended at 5 and bistro night starts at 6 pm. The food this night was being provided by The Roving Italian. Great food! They take cash or cards. We pigged out on meatball sammies and a large mac and cheese. The meatballs were tender and well seasoned with a decent amount of sauce and a slice of fresh mozzarella. The mac and cheese was actually shells and cheese, but it was sooooo good. I can't recall how many cheeses were in there, but it was creamy and gooey, the pasta was not overcooked either. While at the winery, we tried a glass of pinot grigio and their le vin rouge. The red did not go with our meal as well as the pinot grigio, but both were good glasses of wine. Since it wasn't raining (yet), we decided to stay a while longer. We bought a bottle of Riesling and kicked back on the upper deck with some crackers and cheese (which can be bought there.) The Riesling is light and refreshing, not overly sweet at all - it's a great addition to any outdoor meal/activity! The grounds of the winery were nice. There are some benches and picnic tables lining the pond in case you didn't want to sit on the deck. There are three horses that you can visit in the nearby stable and numerous ducks and geese to chase around. I would definitely come back to get food from the Roving Italian. Apparently they rotate in with two other food trucks. I'm sure the others are good too, but if you want light Italian fare, The Roving Italian has got you covered. read more

The wine is always so-so, the setting is pretty, but their outside food policy is completely ridiculous. Today we asked the wine seller if outside food was allowed where Gary was performing outdoors, and she said yes. Imagine my embarrassment when I pulled out a box of Cheez It's and got completely scolded by someone who said she was the general manager. She acted like I committed a major crime, and I didn't appreciate it at all. I was completely humiliated in front of my friends. There's a way to approach people about your rules and that is not the way. I didn't appreciate it at all, and with all the winery choices in Loudoun, there's no need to be subject to such rudeness. Our favorite winery of the day! This place has a 11/10 for atmosphere. The inside is cozy, lots of windows, there is a huge porch. Lots of land and a pond to walk around. My wife and I used to love coming to this winery. Ever since Covid happened the environment has changed immensely. First, it is not family friendly and they seem to have it designed that way on purpose. Secondly, they do not offer wine tasting they have gone to ordering a flight of wines for a set amount, served in plastic Dixie cups. Thirdly, if you are sensitive to smoke or have allergies do not sit inside, the smoke from the outdoor fire billows inside and is very pronounced. If you have a family with children do not come here try one of the many other wineries in the area. read more

Went for my birthday celebration and enjoyed a tasting lead by the knowledgable and entertaining Lee Callicutt. He explained the making of each wine and discussed the latest trend. It's Rose if you didn't know. We learned of the winery's history. We tasted, laughed, and listened. A wonderful time. Doukenie has a roomy area for sitting and enjoying wine. Doukenie is one of my favorite wineries in Virginia! The employees are so friendly and welcoming every time, the wine is delicious, and the views are gorgeous. I highly recommend becoming a member because you only need to buy 12 bottles per year to be a member and you get really cool perks (exclusive events, discounted wine prices, etc.). Second time I came here and the smoke they got going on at the fire pit tables and that entire idea is a complete and utter nightmare. I come from DC and want to be out in the nice fresh country air but the smoke that embalms the entire property is unimaginably suffocating. Overall not a good place and if people try to come out from DC in covid times, perhaps the people in charge could make an effort to stop with the firing up every single table fire pit. I have never in my life seen so much senseless smoke - it was 60F today and not windy and still, all tables looked like they were on fire. Impossible to see anything, breath, or simply exist. First time, it took me a week to get the smoke out of my clothes and had to sit in the bathtub for hours to get it out of my hair and skin... and I'm supposed to pay for this.. and drive to get out there? Horrible everything! They even installed an 'indoor' insulated type of an area but not sure why - to shelter people from covid or from the senseless smoke that's ever-present. Not sure what that area is but it's not making anything better. Maybe replace the fire wood with coal? I don't know but being there is complete and utter misery! This place is.. just not good at all - the service was fine and the wine is mediocre at best but being there seems like a nuisance - I got yelled at for waiting in line to go the the only one stall mini bathroom they have...Also - can't bring your own food? Really? That's another minus but... 'nuff said. Unlikely I'll return. read more

3.5 stars. Admittedly, my favorite part of my visit to Doukenie Winery was their baklava. Seriously, it was the best I have ever had. A group of 4 of us stopped in here Saturday about an hour before they closed and were almost immediately asked how many wineries we had been to prior to stopping in here (the answer was just 1-if you care), which I though was a little odd, but I guess at the end of the day in wine country, the tasting staff needs to be careful. That's fine. The guy that did our tour was actually really great once we got going. He joked with us, tried a couple of things with us and genuinely seemed to like telling us about their wines-which I loved! My favorite wines were the Sauvignon Blanc (a first for me--this is typically the last thing I would choose), the Merlot and the 2013 Cabernet Franc. The raspberry port and dark chocolate kiss were also a nice surprise and then, just when I thought the tasting was over out came the baklava. Yes please and thank you and could I please have a whole tray to go?!?! The tasting took a little while, and I didn't want to over extend our stay since it was nearing 6pm (closing time), but they assured us if we stayed a little after 6 it would be fine. However, at 6:06pm when we came back in to drop off our glasses and buy a couple of bottles we were told the register was closed and given a little attitude about it, so that was disappointing. I mean, I get it, closing time is closing time, but maybe don't tell me it's not a firm time if you actually are going to cash out right at 6pm on the dot. Other than that, Doukenie is very beautiful, they have a pond, lots of acres of grapes, a wrap around porch and some picnic tables. It seems like a great place to have a picnic, although FYI a group of girls we met said they were informed they could only have outside food at the picnic tables, but they do have a case of snacks available for purchase too if you want to eat inside. read more

First visit! We went for live music we saw advertised. The music was great! We did a wine tasting. Loved the wine. They have options for every taste. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. We loved the bites of baklava we received with our bottle of wine. The owner and namesake baked the baklava herself. I loved the sunny windows and lake views. I cannot wait to visit in the summer. Doukenie has a great view of the fields and a lovely pond. It's freezing out there but the tasting room is warm. They offer cheese, meat and cracker boards. Their wine is pretty popular because all the whites except for the Chardonnay were sold out. I have never loved Chardonnays before but after this particular day, this was the second Chardonnay I loved. I started at a white wine drinker...mostly Pinot Grigio and I still love moscatos. But then I switched to Cabernet Sauvignon and red blends after a Sonoma/Napa trip. Don't get me wrong, I still love reds and Spanish Tampranillos but these VA Chardonnays are winners too. And if you buy a bottle here you get a little baklava treat that is most amazing. read more

I've visited this winery a few times. We enjoy their environment and wine. The tasting room is pleasant with a tasting bar and a reasonable area with tables. There's a deck and outside area. The winery has a farm setting. There are horses grazing, a small lake, a silo, and a gazebo. There's a separate room and deck for their club members who commit to buying 2 bottles of wine every 2 months for a year. The staff is friendly and helpful. I like their wines but am not wine expert. I would recommend giving this winery's tasting room a try. read more
