I've been on a bit of a fried chicken kick lately and was happy that Dove's hit the mark. I wasn't very surprised, but you never know. The chicken fried chicken plate was all I ordered, but the dish was incredibly filling and delicious. The chicken was perfectly moist inside, with a tasty crust, and the gravy, peas and pearl onions all were wonderful. I tried to get a little bit of everything into each bite. The service was great and the atmosphere was fun. Nice place to stop in for comforting food on a cold winter's day. read more

This place has a ton of unique dishes, it was really hard to choose what to get. I ordered the burnt ends hash. I'm a vegetarian & somehow managed to miss that this dish included burnt brisket ends. Totally my fault. One of the servers noticed me picking out the meat chunks & setting them to the side (I don't mind when meat touches my food) & she offered to bring me a new plate. I declined but was happy she offered! When I got the check a gentleman told me they waived my dish because of the meat. I've only come here for breakfast on the weekend and we always enjoy our meal. Unless you get here right when they open, expect about a 30 minute wait. Their menu changes now and then and I tend to choose smaller, lighter dishes and my other half usually gets the opposite. On our most recent visit, I had the hojaldres de jamon y queso and the bf had the burnt ends hash. Their dishes are always very flavorful and vibrant. I loved how mine had a tangy salad on the side. I usually don't feel disgustingly full after eating here, but I guess it depends on what you order. If you like bold flavors, you should definitely check this place out. read more

Okay, so first off, this should be de-listed as Tex-Mex. It just sets you up with unrealistic expectations. I went in expecting Tex-Mex and it wasn't and so then I wasn't very happy with what I'd ordered. I'm trying to keep that in mind as I write my review. Decibel level: 50 dB, good for conversation Service was good. Make sure to bring your ID if you want to drink, saw the girl next to me get turned down even though she didn't look a day under 30. Menu is somewhat limited and very pork heavy. Not a great place for vegetarians or anyone avoiding pork. I had the succotash enchiladas. The succotash was a bit undercooked, but tasty. The mole wasn't to my taste, but very typical of Oaxaca or New Mexican cuisine. They have Mexican cokes in a bottle, no fountain drinks. Cute atmosphere and as a friend mentioned, a great place to eat when the place next door fills up. read more

Fifty styles diner with identity crisis--is it tex next? American? Mexican with a diner twist? I can't tell. Most dishes I've tried here are greasy and overpriced but it's fine if that's your thing. I've been here about 3 times... The sides often taste better than the mains. The hash and hush puppies are great but those are hard to screw up. I've heard the pork shoulder soup is outstanding too. However my daily dinner menu item of squash and pepper quesadilla was forgettable and tasted more like a panini. The servers seem frantic and passive aggressive... One time they charged the wrong bill on my friend's card and another time we had a party of four which they sat against some bar tables against a wall with no window. It made it really hard for us to talk. I don't know, I don't think this place is really for group dinners but if you want to impress your date with potent drinks and horchata pie... Avoid. Cool concept, but poor execution. Counter seats around restaurant stare directly at the wall (lovely!) and the dishes we had were just underwhelming. Had the brisket taco, which was impossible to eat because of the size and fragile nature. A dinner plate sized taco is simply a bad idea. Further, many elements of the taco were flavorful, but they completely overwhelmed other elements - like the cheese. Muenster is a delicate cheese, had no business getting lost in that taco. To be fair, the brisket in it was tasty. The chicken fried chicken was also very average. It was so one note (rich) with nothing to combat that, that it became a bit nauseating by the end of the meal. The service was also average. We waited about 15 minutes for drinks and because you are seated facing a wall, there is very little way to get the server's attention to rectify such a situation. Overall, it looks very cool at dove's, but if you like good food and service, this isn't the spot based on our experience. read more

Put a classic diner in the mix with hipster mexican/hispanic food and add a lot of mezcal and you get Dove's Luncheonette. Conveniently situated right across the train station, this 'diner' gave us a good vibe. Our waitress was very friendly and we enjoyed a Ceviche cocktail to start with and one of the suggestions of the day as a main. With all of this we had a big pitcher of a Margarita-like cocktail. The wait was slightly less than they had anticipated and we were able to be seated right at the counter by the window. Why 5 Stars? Because my Burnt Ends Hash was simple perfection. I am always hesitant to order the heavier menu items because I don't want to feel like a complete fat boy the rest of the day, however I decided I had to go for it on this one. Surprisingly, the meal was not too heavy and was the perfect amount of food. At first I felt like the portion was a bit small, but after I devoured the entire plate like a drunk girl scarfing down pizza at 2 am after a night of drinking and making out with several dudes then crying uncontrollably, I realized it was the perfect amount of food that didn't make me feel bloated. The potatoes were cooked to perfection, crispy but also soft. There was a light chipotle mayo on them, probably could have asked for a side of it, but then again I'm watching my figure. The only negative was the coffee tasted like a carpet from a public middle school classroom. It's always shocking when the coffee is bad, especially since there's a really good la Colombe right across the street. The coffee was clearly burnt, but the hash was so good it didn't matter. I would suggest hitting this gem up for brunch, then walking around and end up at Big Star for a beer/ some tacos. Also hit up RSVP and St Alfred's if you're trying to get straight fitted in some fresh street clothes. You'll thank me later, or maybe you won't. read more

Came for a early dinner w the hubs on a lazy sunday. We both had their warm and memorable hot chocolate and shared the hush puppies for starters. The Hush Puppies were quite a few pieces (maybe 6?) and were well seasoned and crispy. I had the Chile Relleno which I found to be classic and innovative all in one! The hubs had the smoked brisket and really enjoyed it but did not find it to be very unique. We hope to return and try some more of the items on their fun menu! read more

So happy to finally try Doves! It has been on my WP restaurant bucket list for a while now. Great vibe! Love the diner atmosphere, close and comfortable to say the least. By far the best brunch place I have been so far in Chicago. The fried chicken in the chorizo gravy and peas is so good. I can't say it enough! This is my number one place to go. They also have this delicious maple sausage sandwich with the best breakfast potatoes I have ever had. You will definitely have to wait for a spot but it is worth it. Love the atmosphere here - it's upbeat but not too loud and really cute. I got the tofu toast, with avocado, tofu, butternut squash, apple, and greens. It sounds like a wild combination but it was absolutely delicious. I loved how the tofu was cooked and I loved the uniqueness of the combination - it was so nice to have something different to order for brunch. We came here on Saturday at 12:30pm with 4 guest and waited about 45min. The hostess was very nice and texted me when table is ready. While we wait, we walked around and had La Colombe coffee and Stans donut. This is a small cute diner with barstool. I would not recommend coming here in the winter for there is no room for your coat and purse. Unless you want to sit on your coat and leave it halfway hanging on the floor. I would not rcmd if you have more than 4 ppl, because space is tight and mostly communal sitting in the table counter. The regular menu will be provided and dont forget to look up against the wall. The specials and desserts are all listed there. Red chile enchilada - It's good, but typical for a good enchilada. Nothing special. The roasted chicken, which was a thigh and dark meat was bit dry. This entree is not spicy. Brisket Hash - Sounds good and plenty of positive review. In my opinion, the brisket was not tender enough. It's overrated and there's room for improvement. My first time at Dove's was the first stop of a day-long food crawl. I love how one entire wall of windows makes the entire place feel very bright and open. The mostly-counter seating means it's good for solo dining or small groups. We tried the blood sausage, grits, and tortilla soup. My first time trying blood sausage and it wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be. Honestly, it didn't taste like much of anything but was nice with the accompanying sour cream and onions m. The grits were good with the hot chili sauces on the counter but a little too buttery for me to order again. The tortilla soup was delicious. I got the cheese on the side which I'm glad for since the soup is already a little oily without it. Overall I enjoyed the food but I think we ordered the wrong items. I came here on a sunday night with my friend. We were lucky enough to be seated right away (I had heard there is usually a wait). I would not come here with a big group of people since most of the seats are counter seats. We sat at the window seats which were nice to people watch. The interior is really cute. It looks like a 70's diner inside (jukebox, brown coffee mugs, wood veneer, tile floor). I ordered the enchiladas with an egg on top and my friend ordered the ceviche. The enchiladas were good. The chicken was really flavorful and tender. They were topped with jalapenos and a really robust spicy red sauce. I must admit the egg pulled it all together, so I probably wouldn't order this dish again just because it didn't blow me away. Next time I would get the fried chicken cause I've heard it's awesome. I was way more into my friend's ceviche though. It was seasoned perfectly and a great texture of crunchy with the cucumbers and soft with the fish. It also was a little sweet which I liked. I told her I wanted to people watch, so I was seated at just the right place. Went to the restroom and was pleasantly (and downright) surprised by my favorite Malin + Goetz hand-care products. Who does that??? Well, apparently I met the person who selected it. :-) Clearly this place is well-staffed, with hand-picked people. I love a good study in strength, character, and grace. I never went thirsty. Three different people came to fill my glass each time I even looked at it. What did I get? Blood sausage in a thick sour cream and olive oil, with what I think are sautéed yellow onions and fresh spring onions. Smoked whitefish with seeded crackers accompanied with a carrot and coriander slaw. Each excellent standouts on their own. I was too full to eat more. Am I sad about it? Just a little. But I most certainly got what I wanted and needed. Savory, spicy, nuanced, nutty, seedy, tart, a little acidic, bloody, congealed, and substantially filling. Like a good night out, except it was day time. So, so, so very happy that this place exists. Yes, they serve stuff that's memorable and wonderful, but so are the people. Upping my review to 5 starts because the pozole and burnt ends hash are easily and consistently two of the best brunch dishes I've had in Chicago. My boyfriend and I love the fried chicken here at Doves and he constantly RAVES about the orange juice!!! HOWEVER!!! We had a brunch in Dove's almost a year and a half ago and we loved it so much. Everything was great, food, service, their outdoor patio. After they closed for a while due to the pandemic we kept dreaming of and few days ago we just learned they're back open again so we decided to go for a brunch on a Monday since it's supposedly "not a busy day". Oh my Lord the server!!! The rudest server I've had in a long time. she just didn't want to do her job. first of all the place was empty, only our table and 2 other tables who are already eating but whenever she asked if we're ready to order she doesn't wait for the response she just turned and left saying she'll come back later. I asked for food recommendations since we're trying to order something different than the last time, she literally said"she doesn't know what my palette is so I can't help you!!!" What kind of response is that when your job is actually to give customers recommendations when being asked or at least "be nice" and be polite. Overall bad service and a very bad attitude from the server lady. I actually like the place and had great memories but after today I don't think I will be back and for new customers I hope you don't expect much of their service. I really enjoyed everything I have had to eat at Dove's. The first time I had the pozole, which I know I'll be back for again. The most recent time I went I had the ceviche to share, green enchiladas and then had three scoops of their sorbet to share as well (Mexican chocolate, honey vanilla, and guava). The guava sorbet was amazing. I might go back just for that. Cocktails were very good as well, and worth the price. Buttermilk fried chicken smothered in chorizo verde gravy with sweet peas and pearl onions. WOW. This dish did NOT disappoint. I got a fried egg on top because #eggporn. The chicken was super crispy and the chicken meat was moist and juicy. It went perfectly with the peas and onions. I also made sure to get a side of the bacon because #bacon. I also tried some of my friend's ham and cheese torta ahogada, which has smoked ham and muenster cheese on a griddled telera roll drowned in a (spicy) chile de arbol salsa. We both loved the spicy kick of the salsa! I even had the leftovers the next day and it was still just as delicious!!! SO GOOD! We had the gravy on the side, but do whatever floats your boat. The chicken itself is just heavenly. The hash with an added fried egg on top: really good but nothing too special.
