Rough crowd in the reviews, but i needed to write what a wonderful experience we had celebrating my sisters Bachelorette. We purchase table service and it was worth every penny, it was also reasonably priced for Boston standards. We were treated like VIP's from the second we walked it, escorted right in and even got to cut the line. We were greeted by our waitresses who made our bride feel like a queen. We were given all the mixers we would want including redbull, cranberry juice, oj, and soda water. The waitresses also came around with jello shots which we also purchased with cash. There were 2/3 times strangers got into our VIP section and as soon as we were not enjoying their company, the staff took care of escorting them out of the area. read more

Down is a fun place to go with a decent size group where you can make your own party in the spacious VIP booths by the dance floor. The VIP bottle service is reasonable for Boston prices and I would highly recommend using Tablelist as they typically have specials for the club that can easily be divided among friends for a special night out. For the atmosphere the space is pretty open and there is two bars for drinks. There is always a dj playing and typically $10 cover on Friday + Saturday nights for general admission. The music typically is pop, edm , hip hop and top 40 mixes. The crowd is typically early to mid 20's . Drinks are typical Boston bar prices. I would recommend if you are interested in combination of a bar and club night as upstairs and downstairs are two different vibes. read more

Baby I likkkkkeeeee it! So as we're driving up to the place I notice a line to the left of the entrance and to the right of the entrance. The left is to go upstairs to Howl at the Moon and the right is for Down Ultra. Well I choose the line on the right because the one on the left looked to be an older crowd. No offense, I just wasn't in the mood to compete with cougars at the time. (Kidding) lol. Being in line so long got kind of frustrating but by the time you get to the door guy you just can't be mad anymore because he was just so nice. And yes, there's a cover, annoying but expected. The place reminds me of Club Duvet in NYC except without beds lol. You basically feel like your in a little box, with an open dance floor and couches lining two walls and bars lining the other two with a DJ in the corner. I loved the music. You go from jamin out to hiphop you hear on the radio to some old UB40 Red Red Wine... but its not just any ol' red red wine, the DJ mixes it up and you hear Red Red Wine Bitchhhhhhes!!! Kinda hilarious but I liked it. I like the fact that you don't have to wait 3 hours to be served a drink at the bar. The bartenders actually pay attention to people and there's barely any lines by the bar. So you go up, order your drink and go back to shaking your ass. I'm not sure whats up with people dancing around a glass on the dance floor and then drinking it because that's completely unsanitary but hey, if your drunk I guess it doesn't matter. We just came back from a double birthday party at the Down Ultra. The music was excellent, and the service even better. I recommend getting a VIP table, our waitress was great and my drinks were always full. Plus, with a table, you have a place to sit and hang out. Watching the drunkards dance must be a sport somewhere. Anyhoo, the place is still new so it wasn't as packed as it could be, but it was Thursday, perhaps Saturday nights are more busy. The clientele was most definitely 25+ and some looked as though they just came out of work. At 22, we were probably some of the younger ones there. Still, the Down Ultra Lounge is a great place to dance your pants off with your friends. But this place isn't a cheap time so prepare to spend some cash. read more

It's not a club, it's a small basement with some DJs and a bar. They have a good sound system (my ears were ringing the next day) and some nice lights. There is a dress coed, or so they say, even though there were a lot of people in there wearing t -shirts and sneakers. Drinks are relatively inexpensive and decently strong. Prices vary depending on bartender and your gender. I should add that the bouncers are serious creepers. I went there with a group of friends, most of whom were women, and we could not get the bouncers away from us. Every 15 minutes, "You ladies having a good time?" We get it man, you work at McDonald's on weekdays, work out every night so you can wear a tight black t-shirt, and groom that chin strap like there's no tomorrow. read more

I don't think this place is as bad as what the other reviewers feel. Went there on a Friday night with a couple of girlfriends and we had a good time. The crowd is definitely younger, more college aged at 21-30. Music was decent, and the place was crowded but not terrible. Cover charge is $10 though. I didn't get a drink inside but apparently it's not too cheap. My best friend loves dancing in this place so I'll probably be back. read more

The bouncer was obviously racist. They did the thing where they wanted to make a line outside to make their place look hip- even though my friends inside said it wasn't packed at all. Made about a dozen of us stand in line outside in the freezing cold while letting in numerous other groups of white guys get in without checking ID's. Took forever to let in two middle eastern guys in front of us. Then when my girlfriend and I got to the front, the bouncer said he had to run a check on our ID's since they were from out of state. Came back and said my ID was no good which is bullshit (I have a really asian looking picture). Would have asked for his name and gone back to talk to supervisor if not for the fact that my toes were utterly frozen. Sickest spot in Boston by far!!! Gone a few times on Thursday nights with me girls and both times we had a BLAST(saw the owner of UFC Dana Gordon one night and Jason Varitech)!! The DJ's they bring in are AMAZING. Its wicked nice inside,great dance floor (my girls like to break it down), bar service was great(fast) sexy bartenders too(n tall)!! The only down side was we got there kind of late the 2nd time 1030ish and almost had to wait so DEF make sure to get there early or book a table like we did and u can cut the line(bottle service girl was fun)., Book early cause my friend tried another time to book when he showed up and they were sold out. Its nice to see a new club in Boston thats FINALLY got a different location and style in Boston. Unlike every other spot where they just change the clubs name and put different couches in. The entrance (below street level) is FILLED with smokers and smells pretty atrocious during the night, making it hard to stomach walking through: I'm even a smoker and I didn't like it... The line/hallway to get to the bathroom was seemingly more complicated for most people who were there. Tons of people were coming from Howl At The Moon to use the same bathrooms, really? 4 floors of drunk people and one bathroom? What gives? I think the majority of people who find themselves here are at a bachelorette party. I was here for a birthday party, for which it was still fairly appropriate. Mixed drinks are about $7-ish? A few of my girlfriends and I went to down expecting to be able to dance and have a good time. After grabbing drinks at the bar and starting to dance almost immediately an extremely drunk man came to our group and was too close for comfort.. once he finally didn't leave us alone I asked him nicely to give us some space.. then unexpectedly he pushed me in the chest as hard as he could and squared up to me ready to hit me again. One of my other girlfriends leaned in to tell him to leave and he then hit her.. it wasn't until he turned around and tried to hit other people that he was carried out and still no one even seemed to care if we were alright. After the fact, no further steps were taken by the staff there after he hit 2 girls in public. Would give 0 stars if I could. Got bottle service for my birthday and had an AWFUL experience. The manager cussed out my girlfriend when he was moved a table in our section to the corner. He was dressed like every other patron at the club and was not easily identified as a manager. After he cussed out my girlfriend, another employee asked us if the manager was behaving nicely/bothering us (BAD SIGN). Also, while the bouncers and doorman were beating up female and male patrons, I recorded some of the incident to hold all parties accountable. The place is pretty much like a renovated basement with couches and yes nice seating but if you want to sit at a table you need to throw down $590 just for a bottle of vodka for a group of 6 or more. Bullshit. or you have a cheaper option of $300 for a diffrent bottle. I doubt most americans now a days want to throw around money like that just to have a good time. We were a group of 6 women celebrating a bachelorette party. It started off as a good night, good drinks good music but then towards the end there was this really drunk guy that would not back away literally attempting to grind his junk against us all. The bride to be stepped away and told him to stop and go away, he then got all defensive that even his friends had to hold him back because he was trying to go after her. His friends were very apologetic on his behalf, then "James" came to the "rescue" and talked to the guy, then James started to yell at us saying we were going to get kicked out. At any place that I have been to if a drunk man is starting an argument with in-defensive women and get combative he gets kicked the hell out. Worst staff ever. The man guarding the restrooms is an absolute degenerate. My friend and I accidentally turned the wrong way out of the women's restroom towards the men's restroom because we didn't know the layout of the club. He berated me and yelled at me even after I apologized because it was clearly an accident. I would never purposely go towards the men's restroom. All we did was accidentally walk in the wrong direction and when I said I was sorry he yelled " are you trying to be funny with me?" multiple times. No. There is absolutely nothing funny about a sincere apology. He also grabbed our arms super forcefully, which is never okay. It's not like we are burly men trying to start a bar fight. Not only that, but we were completely cooperative and he kept yelling in our faces for no reason. He made a tiny accident into this huge ordeal. Up until this point we had only the best impression of Boston, but I would never tell anyone to go to down lounge after how they treated us. I've never encountered as much disrespect as I did last night and management should look into the people they hire and their offensive attitude towards paying customers. I will be contacting the BBB. I went to down ultra on a Friday night, arriving at about 11pm. There was no line to get in, but there was a $5 cover charge. The space feels like a small basement; it's an open floor plan with couches on two sides. As it is so open when it's not crowded it feels awkward, but by 1230 it was pretty packed. I appreciated that drinks were strong and around $7 each. I thought the DJ was ok, he played a lot of remixes of pop and edm songs, but would also play the occasional throwback. So there was nothing horribly wrong with this club. But overall, it's just not my style anymore. It's the purest definition of how my old college used to describe "clubs", especially for international students. They play house/techno/trance and everyone is dressed to the nines. Drinks are a bit pricey (I can't remember how much but I doubt they'd be $5 beers) and I get a more or less snooty vibe from most everyone there. We had gone with my friend's cousin whose birthday it was and he had gotten a table with some friends. I remember someone sitting in the table (who we didn't know since it was a big group) had snottily told my friend who was looking for our coats that, um excuse me, I highly doubt your coats are there. *Insert the snottiest, valley girl tone...and apply it to a man* Just because I'm not decked out in Gucci from head to toe because, oh wait, it's a Wednesday night and, oh yeah, I have responsibilities like work the next day, doesn't mean you can talk down to anyone like that. Bottom line is that I kind of got that feel from almost everyone there so it's not really my scene. Also, the music....seriously not my scene. Doubt i'll be initiating any dance battles to Kaskade anytime soon (probably a better choice for stretching music if you ask me). See my review for Howl at the Moon for my experience with the bouncers at the beginning of the night... My friend and I snuck away from a birthday party at Howl to go downstairs and dance for about a half hour. All I can say is that this place wants to be a club in Vegas, but it just doesn't have it in it. At all. Apprently the cool thing to do here is rub girls' heads, which may be the weirdest way a guy has ever approached me. It was pretty annoying. Guys overall were kinda creepy. I like to stay away from places where guys think it's okay to just come up behind a girl and grind on her ass. One of the waitresses told us to go over to a table of guys to get free drinks all night because we were the "hot girls" which is kind of ironic because we were the only two girls under 150 pounds not in a tiny, skin-tight dress. Music is okay and this is always my biggest concern with any establishment. Some songs were great, others were songs I'd never heard and lasted way too long. Not worth coming back to. read more

Went here a bunch of times over the summer and it is by far my favorite club in Boston. Down Is only open Thursdays Fridays and Saturdays.. Every night I went there was a decent crowd.. Even Thursdays. I think there was one random Friday night that was a little empty but it was really rainy so that probably had something to do with it.. The club itself is really beautiful---it's small but set up nicely. Just being in there feels like you're VIP. Awesome light and sound system. Never disappointed by the djs.. They have resident and guest djs all the time. Good mix of music genre. They seem to hire really talented djs to spin there. I love it!! I don't think I ever waited more than 2 minutes for a round of drinks.. The bar tenders were fast, always friendly and all seem to be having a great time- helps the atmosphere so much. The drinks were priced decently and looked small but were appropriately strong for the size and price. My friend booked a party here.. Bought a couple bottles and had a waitress serving their party all night-- not personal experience but he had nothing but good things to say as well. Highly recommend this Lounge. If there's a line it's worth the wait. All staff I interacted with was friendly. I can't wait to go back next year! read more

Horrible Experiance. Waited in line for an hour and 20 minutes while watching bouncer (tall white male) let in everyone he knew or knew someone who worked there. The line moved horribly slow and when it was my time to be let in I gave the bouncer my Military ID (which is a legally VALID liquor liscence as any truely trained police officer or bartender could tell you) because my liscence was expired (for under 2 months) and the bouncer claimed that the ID was not valid for liquor and that he had been "trained in these things and that Down was very strict about IDs" If this man had had any real training and was not such an idiot he would have known that military IDs are valid. He was horribly rude and degrading to me and kicked me and my friends out of line. I will NEVER go here EVER again. read more

Small, boxy club beneath Howl at the Moon. I came here on a Thursday and it was no hassle getting downstairs to Down, but it also wasn't that crowded either. The big advantage to this place is that it seems to be connected to Howl at the Moon which definitely has a bar vibe, giving you the ability to switch to completely 2 different atmospheres. This used to be one of my favorite paces. Now out of nowhere they have changed there dress code. I happened to have a very nice outfit on but was not allowed in without dress shoes. THIS HAS GONE TOO FAR. Sorry I don't want my Johnson and Murphy all leather stitched shoes to be exposed to a crowded dance floor just to be stepped all over and spilled on. I think this is there way of deterring the creepy dudes that girls reference in just about every yelp review but there are other ways to go about that with proper marketing towards their target audience. I respect that goal, but I don't think that not letting in loyal customers because they aren't wearing work clothes is the best way to go about it. The fact that there club was empty the last two weeks is a testimate to how people feel about the policy. Good luck with that owner. Keep up the good work. Made a yelp specifically to write about how bad this place really is. My friends and I decided to go to Down Ultra Lounge based solely on the positive feedback we had heard about it from this website. After my experience there I couldn't understand how this place could be getting 4 star reviews but now looking back I see the hidden reviews which make a lot more sense. Pros: Only one. The DJs play good music. Cons: Everything else about this place. First, had to wait in line for about 45 minutes, because they were already way over capacity, which turned out to be true, something I found out when I eventually got inside. Once inside my friends and I wanted to check our coats since it was about 25 degrees outside and 100 degrees inside and had no desire to carry our large winter coats around all night. Nope, couldn't check our coats. Why? Because it was full. Coat check full at 11:30? Get a bigger coat check, it's the winter season in Boston, come onnnn. So now carrying our puffy winter coats, we try to make our way to the bar. After pushing our way through a high school dance crowd (lots of 5 foot tall guidos, and overly tanned 18 year old girls) we made it to the bar, but for some reason we were only allowed to go to certain bartenders designated by the bouncer. Weird, and annoying because the bartender just stared at us for about 5 minutes before she realized we were giving her drink orders, not exaggerating. Now with drinks and winter coats in hand we tried to make the most of it and dance, because like I said the DJs were good. Well, that was a bad idea. It is impossible to move in that establishment let alone dance. Either the crowd there is just incredibly rude or incredibly intoxicated, regardless of what time of night it is. I felt like a pinball, getting knocked into and pushed constantly. Not to mention the dudes there are gross and relentless. Guys came up to my friends and I multiple times, but we wanted nothing to do with them. I have no problem telling someone I don't want to dance with them, and that's exactly what I did all night, but it didn't matter because the same dudes continued to try and grind all up on me the whole time I was there, even though I had legitimately ran away from them over and over again. That's the other thing, the creeps could keep finding me because this place is SO SMALL. The floor is covered with people's empty glasses and beer bottles, so make sure you're looking down at all times if you try to move in this place because you may break your ankle. Down Ultra Lounge tries desperately to be all upscale and cool but it isn't at all. It is in fact quite the opposite. I do not recommend ever going here. This place is awful. read more

I am sad to ever give a place 1 start but down ultra lounge truly deserves it. Here's a brief recap of last night, December 20. I paid A LOT of money for a table and bottle service for me and my friends. Like A LOT of money and guess what it got me? The bottles I ordered ahead of time, a nice waitress Brittany, an incredibly rude manager and other peoples coats thrown all over my booth. I paid for a booth for 12 people. At one point someone pushed back our table and I pushed it back forward, and this guy who is apparently the manager said "put that fucking back" and I said "I'm sorry but please get out of my table I paid for this" and he word for word said to me "you're wrong. You didn't pay for this now shut the fuck up" to which I said back "actually I did pay for this myself for 12 people and this booth is for 12 people, do you even work here" and when he told me he was the manager I got my waitress to verify that for me, told her about the situation and another bouncer actually came over to me to ask if the manager was giving me a hard time. Fast forward to 2am. Some girl not associated with our party was getting kicked in the stomach by the manager himself and bouncers outside. Yes you read that correctly. My friend tried to get the poor girl up and stop them and in return he got put in a choke hold, kicked in the torso and head and ended up with a broken rib or two. You read that correctly too. My boyfriend got it all recorded on his phone. You know what else he got on his video? The manager slapping the phone out of his hand asking "why the fuck are you recorded this asshole" So they just lost a customer who spent about a grand for the night and would've have done it again if their management was different. If a bouncer has to ask if the manager was giving you a hard time because they know he is a jerk, you have a problem down. Beating up girls is not okay. Breaking people's ribs is not okay. When someone started to yell "someone call the police" the manager threatened them too. Classy establishment. read more

We were going to Howl at the Moon and the bouncers at Down told us to get in their "VIP Line" for Howl at the Moon downstairs. We paid our $10 cover and walked into that almost empty establishment (even though they created a line outside). The club its self reminds me of a nicely finished off Frat house's basement. Its a large open basement that has sheets hanging from the wall. There is no where to sit and lounge unless you purchase bottle service. The drinks are small and served in plastic cups. Overall it looks like it was thrown together in a day to make a quick buck off Howl at the Moon's success. read more
