My friend and I went this past Friday (06/05/26) and we had an absolute blast!! We were in the night club downstairs for retros night which is all 70s and 80s music. The drinks were amazing, the DJ was great, and the bartenders/bouncers were all super friendly. The dance floor was packed starting around 11, but we got there just before 10 to really see the space. We didn't use the upstairs bar but they had a live band going when we got there that was taking requests and they were pretty good for the 5/10 minutes we heard. read more

Some friends and I popped by Howl at the Moon to celebrate my graduation this weekend. We arrived just a few minutes after opening and went downstairs to the dance floor area. The cover (for women, we had no men in our party so not sure if it's different) was only $10 each. The downstairs filled up pretty quickly, DJs were awesome (we tipped them each $5 and they let us behind the DJ booth), and I loved the lighting and vibes. Definitely for college kids. Bathrooms were clean. Our bartender was super sweet (dark hair, tattooed) and moved quickly. I got two vodka crans and they were pretty small and light ($10 each I believe), I'm a lightweight and they didn't have much of an impact on me. Only complaint was that two of my friends were let upstairs to the bar area, but me and my two other friends were told we'd have to go back outside and through the main entrance? I'm not sure if they were trying to make us pay another cover or what but it seemed like the bouncer guarding the stairs was selectively allowing certain people upstairs but not others. I had a really fun night and the discounted drinks are a good deal but other than the drinks on discount the others were quite pricy. My friend won a party here and they didn't let any of us, guests or host (of which they made her report the party size a week before the event), in the venue until after the scheduled time. They shouldn't host these types of events if they aren't planning on holding them. The drinks vary greatly depending on how each bartender is feeling in the moment. The dance floor is awkward- the vibe of a live drum set with karaoke singing doesn't play well. And you're likely to get harassed outside the venue despite the location. read more

Came here this past Friday night through a complimentary party I received for Howl and Down via a giveaway. There were $4 drink specials (drinks you could choose from were Dirty Shirley, House Margarita, Devils Lemonade, New Amsterdam Vodka Drinks, Myers' Rum Drinks, and White Claws). I had the Dirty Shirley and the House Margarita which were our favorites of the night. The lemonade wasn't so great, but for $4, I couldn't complain. They also weren't super light which was nice, but it's important to note that the drink specials are only available from 6pm-10pm at Howl. Also, another thing to note, these drink specials were apart of the party. Otherwise, I didn't know how much the drinks on the menu were as there were no prices. We enjoyed the appetizer buffet that was available from 6-8pm. Originally we thought this was only for people that were a part of the complimentary party, but it appeared as if it was open to the public. There wasn't too much available, but it was all decently tasty considering it was free. Live music was great and the ambiance of the place was nicely decorated. We wanted to check out the nightclub around 10pm and this was super confusing. We thought the entrance to enter was downstairs (as this would make sense because the nightclub is literally called Down). The bouncer downstairs was on the aggressive end and was screaming at people to get out of the hallway, but I think lots of people were also confused as to how to enter the nightclub. We found out that you actually had to go outside, next door, in order to enter. The line outside to enter Down was incredibly long, but since we were a part of the Howl party, we at least didn't have to pay a cover. Otherwise, there would've been a $10 cover. The music at the nightclub was good, but it gets very packed. Don't be surprised if you get some drinks spilled on you. I appreciated that Howl at the Moon and Down have a partnership/are under the same management (it appears) but they could've done a better job with advertising how and when you could've entered the nightclub. This made it seem like Down was a completely separate entity/business even though the two businesses were physically connected. Overall, service was solid and our waitress was friendly. THIS PLACE EVICTS PEOPLE RANDOMLY Sep7 The security forces just kicked my boyfriend out. I was at the club with him since 12 am, and we had just come back from the bathroom when this happened. This was my boyfriend's second time here, and when he asked them why he was kicked out, they said it was because other people had complained about him. My boyfriend was with me the whole time and he hadn't done anything wrong. He was kicked out without any proper explanation. Is this just because I'm Asian?? Or is my boyfriend Latino? Racism exists here: This place is highly racist. There was over 15 people with us. Mostly caucasians, there was at least a few of us were mix. My colored friends was not allowed to go in downstairs , after being upstairs with a wristband. Majority of the staff were aware and were also confused on WHY we couldn't go in. It was obvious. It was because the people I was with was black/Mix. Mind you the rest of my caucasians friends have been checked to go in and my non white friends had to stay back..They kicked them out just like that.. No reason, no explanation, just a bunch of ignorant people. They didn't cause any problems or even come off violent. Just be aware.. going here.. they roofie people, security's aren't as helpful or innocent as they look, the drinks are usually watered down, men beat women here ,people steal other peoples tips, cockroaches running across the tables , staffs losing credit cards, miserable staffs , the list goes on. Worst experience ever. You are probably better off going somewhere else. This place needs to be reevaluated by the state, it's unacceptable to run this type of operation at this point . read more

Went a few weeks ago with my friend to this bar after dinner and it was super fun! We sat at the bar and listened to their live band perform, which was so good!! We were extremely impressed by their entertainment and loved the songs they sang. We had a few drinks at the bar and were lucky that the hotel we were staying at was only a 5 minute walk from there. Super cute bar and we wanted to check out their club downstairs, but we decided not to because the bouncer wouldn't let us go in through a certain entrance as we were exiting the main bar and didn't want to walk around in the cold finding the other entrance or having to show them our IDs and vaccine cards again. I had the full drink in front of me, and my friend and I never even stepped away from the bar. I asked if we could check the security camera that was directly above us, but I was told that it "didn't work." To sum it up: -- our assigned server was rude in the way she talked to us -- she rarely tended to our table -- she took drinks before people were done with them -- was unclear and opened tabs without communicating with card-owners that a tab was being opened -- thought it was smart to confront and dispute the tip she received, cuss out a customer, and have them removed by security. We went here on a less busy night, so I can't really speak to the vibes on a Friday/Saturday. However, there was live music that was pretty good, and they were playing a lot of hits. We were dancing and having a good time! Also the bucket was a great price! Came out to only about $20 with tax and tip for a 32 oz. And it tasted super good !! The band is iconic and the line to get in downstairs actually moves and doesn't just sit idle for an hour to make people walking past think it's busy. The dirty Shirley special is always a joy and one of the bartenders working was one of the most fun and awesome bartenders I have gotten drinks from while out. 99% sure someone spiked my drink here. Not that that's necessarily the venue's fault, but not the type of place I ever want to go back again. I'm a very big dude and can handle my drinks. I came here a bit buzzed already and had two drinks and suddenly was falling all over myself, puking my brains out, huge gaps in my memory that night. Didn't drink any more that night and still felt drunk and had issues with remembering things that happened hours later. Want really impressed with this place. It's not really a dueling piano bar, it's more like louder background music. Pro: nice bar setup. Good view from mostly everywhere. Service was pretty good. Cons: were there for an hour and a half. Place was only 1/2 full and didn't play our request which we tipped very well. Music could have been louder and more interactive. We got these drink in a bucket..the straws were strange and just difficult to get it to your mouth. The buckets were expensive with a very minimal amount of liquor. Such a great venue! I went for a really fun Yelp elite event where they had tall drinks, great appetizers, and a live band the whole time. It was so fun! The vibes are just so genuine, and the appetizers were SOO good. I highly recommend coming here if you want a night on the town with great food and drinks! Make sure to tip the bartender! They also have these hilarious Lisa frank cat drawings that my friends and I thought were funny and unique. If you're around FiDi, swing down to Howl at the Moon for a good time :) read more

This place is awesome!! The punch buckets are definitely worth trying. The Jell-O shot syringes are so fun and you can order them from a roving bartender. Expect a loud, college-aged crowd here. We went on a Saturday and the cover was $10 if I remember correctly. read more

Howl at the Moon is the best going out spot that I know in Boston. It's definitely at its best term time (since it's mostly filled with Junior and Seniors in college during the school year). It is a cheap and fun night if you do it right. I recommend "winning a party" for yourself and your friends. Here's how it works: You can sign up online, via email, or via text to get free admission and free food for specific hours (9-11 on Thursdays, 7-9 on Fridays and Saturdays, and different times on holidays) for yourself and as many guests as you want. Anyone who gives your name at the door at the appropriate time (given they're 21+) gets free admittance and free food until the given time. You are guaranteed to "win" if you sign up. As the one throwing the party, you also get a few freebies (a sticker, a water bottle, and a beer cozy), and potentially earn cash (if 25+ people come and give your name, you get a $25 gift card, and that amount increases if you bring more people). Once inside, enjoy decent drinks for cheap ($2 for beer or $4 for a basic cocktail with their well/house liquor. Their buckets for splitting are decent and pretty well priced, but the smaller sizes are tiny with all the ice, so I recommend getting the largest size to split with friends if you do that). On the ground floor there's usually a solid live band playing less dancey (more pop or throwback) music. People tend to dance and drink by the band until about 11. Once the club downstairs opens (I can't remember if that's 10 or 11) I recommend going to get your stamp from the club downstairs so you can move to the dance floor whenever you want without waiting in a separate (and in winter, long and cold) line for the club. In my experience, the dj downstairs is always good, playing fun, familiar, and dance-y tunes. The people downstairs also tend to be fun and dancey and young. There's a bar downstairs too. Don't get your drinks there- they exponentially more expensive. If you bring a coat, they also have coat check downstairs for about $5 + tip. It's better to go without one, if possible, because the line can get long. One final tip, take advantage of the free tap water at the bar downstairs. If you're dehydrating from alcohol and dancing, it'll help, and it's always free if you ask for tap water. read more

This is a bar that features a live band that plays songs requested by the patrons. It's fun to think of your favorite party songs and be able to hear them live shortly thereafter. The band played such a wide range of hits and was very engaging with the crowd. Each band member rotated position to play multiple instruments. There were two pianos, guitars, and drums. The atmosphere was so lively with a lot of dancing taking place. Everyone seemed to be in such a great mood, including myself. The only issue for me was that it was difficult to have conversation because the music was loud. I was fortunate to be an invited guest at a Yelp Elite event at Howl at the Moon, so it was a great opportunity to experience this place. It was spacious with ceiling to floor windows and nice woodwork throughout. The bartenders and waitstaff were friendly and accommodating. They had an extensive cocktail and shot menu, which offered everything from the traditional cocktails to fruity drinks served in very tall glasses. The food was very good. I particularly enjoyed grilled shrimp skewers, stuffed mushrooms, and tomatoes stuffed with lobster. This is a great place to come with a bunch of friends to let loose and have fun or to celebrate an occasion such as a birthday. It's cramped, sticky, the music isn't good, the drinks are overpriced, and the dancing is lame. It feels college-y and sloppy, but not in the making-good-memories sort of way. I had to forcibly pry my extremely heavy boots off the floor because it was so sticky/nasty/disturbing. The top floor is better, but not by much. I'm from Charlotte, North Carolina And was visiting boyfriend in Boston. In Charlotte we have an awesome howl at the moon in which i, friends and family go to frequently. However My experience here has been absolutely terrible. Well sitting at the bar enjoying our time with friends around Alex kept putting the beer bottles down pretty hard on the bar so they were fizzing up, so we jokingly started taping our beer glasses the bartender "Alex " walks over and very rudely shuts us down and says "no I don't want to have to clean up after you".... umm first of all that's literally you're job? And secondly the way we were just spoken to was uncalled for and very disrespectful. There's a way you should speak to people and that wasn't it. After she said that my boyfriend was over it and said he didn't feel like staying somewhere that treats us like children. So I request to speak to the manager Brain, who was also just as rude and basically said "yeah, well that's not good bar etiquette" dude are you kidding me? You manage a howl at the moon where people literally come to get drunk and sing and dance to piano songs....This isn't the ritz. I've been to Howl a bunch of different times and I always have a great time. Pro tip: try to get there early (around 8:30) so I don't have to wait in line and can get drinks quicker, and then head over to the dance floor! Drinks are fun, as are the apps! The buckets are def a good picture opportunity which I always appreciate! The music is so much fun, and I'm always impressed by the stamina of each of the band members, they are so extremely talented! I see a lot of bad reviews that are focused on not getting drinks quickly and lines and stuff like that, but when you go to a fun spot like this there are going to be crowds so I think that's a silly thing to complain about....just get there a little earlier. Welp this would not be my top choice for fun in Boston, but I've been here several times and it'll do in a pinch if you don't mind waiting. On Friday / Saturday nights this place gets packed and the line snakes around the block. I've had the misfortune of going to a birthday event for a friend and getting to the line past 9PM in the bitter January cold. I've also won one of those Happy Hour parties, which as some other reviewers have described is a shameless way for them to fill downtimes. They allow multiple groups to have happy hour parties so you just have to know someone's name to gain access to the limited half priced drinks and the free buffet. The "Host" of the happy hour gets a "free gift" which is basically a Howl coozie, bumper sticker and a rubber wrist band so don't get too excited. One of my friend's had her bachelorette party here along with at least 6 other brides to be that Saturday night. We all had fun and they had a fun photo booth animator off in the corner. The main selling point of this place are the dueling pianos and the live music. They have talented musicians who take requests and cover popular songs. I suppose they have the bowls for you to "bribe" them with your requests as none of the songs in our bachelorette party were selected. Oh well! The drinks overall are alright, but nothing special, same with the food. My friends and I shared a pizza from the kitchen on a much quieter weeknight. We had a talented woman covering popular songs and serenading us in the background. However, their averageness could not save the most awful service I have ever received. While waiting to order, the bartenders literally stood there on their phones chatting with one another. I shouldn't even say chat, more so had a fifteen-minute conversation. This happened several times. I am not going to wait forty minutes for a drink while Becky shows photos on her Iphone to all her fellow bartenders. For four people behind the bar you would think one would be working? Nope. The rudest bartender I've ever encountered in my life. My boyfriend and I kissed in front of him and he yelled at us to, and I quote, "get the **** out of here." I was shocked and confused, he was incredibly rude and insulted us over and over. He yelled at us, shouted at us to leave the establishment and to, and I quote again, "take your tip and get the **** out." We came on a Sunday night and bought about 30 to 50 people with us for a going away party. We expected the music to be much more up good and fun then it ended up in reality. The 3 musicians seem to play what they liked and not change their set based on what the crowd wanted. They didn't even sing along with each other songs. The whole vibe seemed more like background music then interactive dancing and karaoke. My friend and I bought cards that alleged to get us souvenir glasses with our beer. Although the bartender looked for are souvenirs, he never could find them and never offered us any form of compensation. The deal: we expected this place to be a fun party waiting to happen.
