The ambiance of Mariel's underground is super cool, a mix of upscale meets street art. We started the night before the club opened with some drinks and apps which were alright - had the calamari and empanadas which were yummy but definetly overpriced for the small portions. I thought the drinks were just alright as well (and off cocktail menu were definetly expensive, $20 for a cosmo for example). Our server/turned night bottle girl was a highlight - so sweet, fast, gave recommendations, and even some complimentary shots to end the night! The staff was sweet and encouraged us to stay for night life with no cover and also free cost check. Reservations are a must but cannot be made earlier than a month in advance. It's a lounge like setting meaning the standard table can easily accommodate for a table of 6 and the larger tables can hold 10 people or more. I enjoyed the music and the dark vampiresque vibe. Our waitress was very nice and made it a point to visit our table as much as she could. Fair warning for those with bigger appetites to get food elsewhere first as prices are high and portions are small. Between three people we ordered 6 dishes and were still hungry. We tried their calamari, pork empanadas, Snow crab corn arepas, chorizo pizza as well as their chicken pizza. Did I mention the plates were small? Food quality was a step above bar food but not by much. In the future, I would be entirely satisfied with just getting their XL pitchers. Although $150 each, you definitely get more bang for your buck as opposed to ordering a bunch of individual drinks. We got the mango margarita which was tasty and not overly sweet. When it came to turning into the club, they slowly start putting up the velvet dividers and kindly informed us it was 30 mins before ending the dinning in. The music quickly turned into dated and dry music that we didn't end up staying much longer past. I went here after having drinks at Mariel upstairs. They didn't charge us cover and they had a free coat check. I LOVED the music and it was fun to dance. The drinks upstairs were good. Here at the club, I ordered a Hendricks soda with lemon which somehow tasted really bad. I wonder if they were actually using Hendricks? Anyway they charged like $17 for this which was more expensive than the really good drinks upstairs. I say drink a bunch upstairs then only come downstairs to dance. Right before I left, I asked for a glass of water. For some reason it tasted sweet which was really weird and creeped me out. What was in the water? Anyway, I left it. read more

Ate upstairs pretty early and then went to another bar to come back. It was right after a snowstorm and the bouncer asked if we were on the list? This was a post snowstorm Saturday night at like 9pm? Wouldn't let us in... probably because we were in puffy jackets but it was with 6 girls and Boston was around 20 degrees that night. We called to complain about our interaction and was told it was up to the bouncers discretion? LMFAO so guess everyone was TOO ugly for here.... YOUR POOR SOUTH BEACH MIAMI BUSINESS PRACTICES WONT WORK IN BOSTON! We Spent $1,000 on dinner and drinks with friends upstairs and on my way out I asked the bouncer at the door if we could check out the club, being my first time there. He gave me an excuse that it was reservation only, and he didn't seem interested in letting us in. Little does he know that he just pushed away more $$$$ I was willing to spend. You and your GM can eat my hotdog! You work for 12$/hour. This place reminds me of south beach Miami where people are all flash and no cash, and the clubs have to filter out the people with no money. We went to go downstairs and we asked if there was room for five and the bouncer said to my gal pal "let me see you move" she initially thought he meant move out of the way.. the bouncer then again said "no, let me see you move"... we decided this place was not for us and we let the lead bouncer know... heads up, these people questionable.. read more

Honestly before the pandemic Mariel Underground was one of my favorites. Loved the speakeasy vibes that were a bit more modern than its sister restaurant Yvonne's. On the weekends it typically turned into a nightclub with table service, if you don't have a table be prepared for a bit of a wait or arrive early. Before Covid they started these great brunch parties on Sunday's. The food and the atmosphere were top notch! Would go again and hope they reopen soon! read more

I was at Mariel Underground tonight and I got punched in the eye and I went inside trying to seek help because I was in pain and the bouncer told me to get out of the lobby area and stand out on the street alone. He offered no help and did not even evaluate me to see if I was okay. I do not think this was acceptable and I was just looking for help and he told me to leave by myself. Mariel, I think you need to evaluate your staff because if there was a serious emergency somebody could have gotten seriously injured and the situation could have been worse than it was. read more

ALL GIRLS BE AWARE: THEY HAVE A ROOFIE PROBLEM. There have been multiple reports of girls getting roofied here and one of my closest friends was roofied at this place very recently and she had her drink in her hand the whole time. Wowwww absolutely do not go to this spot! I am not one to write reviews especially bad ones that hurt businesses but this place was the absolute worst. And it's too bad, because the decor was beautiful but the drinks and food are the worst. Of course my review isn't going to affect many people from not going here. Boston doesn't have much for nightlife and this is a trendy hip place. The food and the drinks upstairs are completely different from the drinks and the food you would get downstairs they make the drinks in batches everything tasted like sour mix after one drink I had a really bad headache and the food was terrible next day I've been feeling sick not sure if I had some type of food poisoning in this place but the cost of the food and drinks is the same as the menu upstairs and you don't get the same equal service. Came at 10pm on Friday and they told us that they would let our group of 5 girls in but not the 2 boyfriends that came along. Not only is this obviously exploiting women customers for their table members' viewing pleasure but it is incredibly unlikely that a new club would be at capacity at 10pm on a Friday. Not a real club - Avoid at all costs. I'd rate zero stars if I could. I went on a Saturday around 1:00am and was ready to wait in line to get into the nightclub portion of the restaurant. However, when I got there, the bouncer turned me away and said it's full and that there is no wait list and no way I'd be getting in that night. He said that it's completely up to the GM's (general manager's) discretion about who gets in, and that it's only a VIP bottle service space and not a real bar/club. So don't bother stopping here unless you know the GM. The bouncer said that the only way I'd MAYBE get in is if I sucked the manager's d***...no thanks. They would let in groups of 4/5/2 people in . It's impossible to get drinks at the counter as people are already seated and eating too . I made reservations for Mariel the restaurant about a month ago - the reservation was last night. I actually loved the restaurant, the food was great, and the drinks were amazing. We chose Mariel so we could attend the super hyped "underground" below the restaurant. I was so excited and looking forward to this for weeks. As the days approached, I heard very negative statements about the underground - of people saying it's impossible to get in, or that they only let in friends of the owner, or staff lying about being at capacity. I also looked on Yelp and people in the reviews were saying the exact same statements I had heard from others. I definitely kept my hopes high and figured I would see for myself. As we rolled into our reservation at 10, I asked the hostess if we could go to the underground afterwards. One hostess hesitated & appeared nervous by this question. She said, "uhmm" then another hostess nearly jumped across the stand to abruptly & rudely state, "I think it's reservation ONLY". How is it reservation only for a night club? There was a line outside? I agree with the rest of the reviews that they clearly only let people in if they know the owner or are buying a table, even if they're not at capacity. Definitely not going to try and go to the underground ever again if we're clearly not welcomed. read more

Tried to come in at 10:00 on a Saturday night. Didn't even give our group an opportunity to wait outside; we we're told it was by reservation only and that a table would be a grand. We simply headed elsewhere. Was hoping to check it out, but a venue trying to be 'exclusive' in a such a sleepy part of Boston is fairly laughable. I've enjoyed some of this groups other locations (Lolita, Yvonne's) but they're just trying to hard. I was excited to visit this place for the first time, but I can safely say, I don't plan on going there ever again. My friends and I tried to plan ahead and learn what time to be there for the underground entrance. After 40+ minutes waiting on cold Boston winter, bouncers told us (because we asked) no one would enter the place. They still kept the long line waiting for no reason. Just very cruel and dishonest. Definitely the worst experience ever. My first time getting really bad food poisoning, got home around around 11 and threw up until 4 am. Had to check into the emergency at 4:30 am my throat was swollen as heck. Beware of this place my daughter was drugged and almost died. As she and her friends were going into the club another girl was being escorted out in very poor condition how ironic as they discussed the situation and agreed it's was important to know your limits. They had a shot and a mojito she got extremely confused, long story short ended in the ER. I've been here 2 times. The first was fine nothing special but fine on a Thursday. The second I had checked the hours online for a Saturday, but when I arrived after talking to the bouncer I discovered that though the internet said 8, the club was not open until 930 or 10 since tHat was when he was told to open. That upset me as clearly the internet time was set as bait to lure pEople there early to wait. I also learned from the bouncer that no one would be let in other than either table buyers or friends of the owner. If this is the case please set up a private club not a bar which is advertised to be open to all who attend. I attended with 4 other girls all of which were excited to experience what I had described to you. This place is AWESOME. I came here with 15 of my girlfriends to celebrate a birthday and we had a blast. The atmosphere and ambience is fantastic - swanky and modern without being stuffy. And the Cuban vibe is so different and unexpected, especially in a market like Boston. We made a reservation at 7:30 PM and were able to enjoy the space almost all to ourselves before crowds started pouring in at 9:30. Food is awesome. Had the smoke kingfish dip and chicken tots. Portion size was generous and more than enough for 1 person. Loved the mojitos as well. Music was fabulous and I'm from Miami so I have high standards when it comes to nightlife. They had a live saxophonist playing along with the DJ which enhanced the experience and was certainy unique to say the least. And Joe the manager was SO helpful and pleasant to deal with. He did everything to accommodate our large party and make the experience what it should be. He exemplifie what customer service should be. Thank you, Joe! Will be returning back. read more
