The young woman that answered the phone & took my order was very pleasant and helpful. I explained that it was my first time ordering from their establishment and I had some concerns about the sauce they offer. She advised it was a different flavor than what you have come to expect when you get the traditional style pizza. She described the amount of cheese that generally comes on the pizzas. She then informed that when taking orders over the phones, you have to pay in advance using a credit card. She had the patience to assist me in choosing the actual type of pizza and provided me with a timeframe for pickup of 20-25 mins. I arrived 20 mins later to see a steady stream of customers coming & exiting the small Lehigh Avenue storefront and the pie was ready as promised. Service was prompt & I was back in the car with a mouth watering aroma surrounding me. I was intending on proceeding to my home 15 mins away but just had to try a piece before beginning the journey. The pie was cut into 6 pieces & it was so delicious having a sweeter taste than I have ever tasted. I would recommend that you try the food at this place. I heard so much about Down North Pizza. It's a small pizza shop that offers a variety of unique flavor pizzas. I love the creativity and how each pizza provides a piece of Philly hip hop culture. I ordered online. I decided to get the Break you off pizza which is detriot style. The pizza contain lamb sausage, lemon ricotta and garlic honey drizzle. My pizza was ready fast and the lady at the counter was pleasant. I would say my pizza was okay. I didn't taste the lemon ricotta and I was not too crazy about the lamb sausage. I thought it was kinda bland which may be my personal preference. I did like the garlic honey drizzle which provided good flavor to the pizza. This place has been on my list for some time and I was fortunate to visit at a downtime. Amongst a city full of pizza shops, Down North stands out among the greats. ENVIRONMENT The restaurant is relatively easy to find and seats no more than 5 or so people in the shop. The wait was a tad excessive which I credited to the food being "made with love". FOOD I love a good piece of focaccia! Another contributor commented that their pizza can be likened to focaccia which I would find to be incredibly accurate. The "Detroit" style was incredibly flavorful accompanied by a heaping of toppings(I settled on the "I'm A Boss"). I will admit the fries left a bit much to be desired but not enough to influence my rating. This was an underwhelming experience. I love Detroit-style, Chicago deep dish, New York slice, and everything in-between. My wife and I were YouTube surfing good eats in Philly and came across this location. We got the "Rok the mic" pizza. For beverage, I wanted a Diet Coke, and my wife just wanted water after some extensive walking. Well...no fountain drinks and no water. They just have lemonade and shakes, but just like a regular day at McDonald's...the shake machine was not working. So, I got a strawberry lemonade, and my wife got blueberry lemonade. The drinks were actually pretty good. The temperature in the place was pretty bad. It was definitely high 70s or low 80s in there which is rough with no water. At the very least, I suggest getting a 24 pk of Dasani and upcharging customers. The pizza was...okay. The sauce was sweet which is good, but the flavor wasn't anything to call home about. Pizza alone is 3 stars but I'm giving them an extra star because I like their mission and I want them to continue to succeed as a business as what they're doing is super important. Overall if you are BBQ chicken pizza fan you would love this place as their norf tomato sauce as other reviews have mentioned is pretty sweet and has a mild chipotle / bbq sauce type of flavor . WOW! We swung by on a Saturday night before an event at Laurel Hill. The Break You Off was one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Crispy crust, flavorful toppings, and just the right amount of cheese. Maybe even more impressive, the vegan No Betta Love was also amazing. The norf sauce is spicy and delicious and you wouldn't know the cheese is vegan. The apple pie milkshake and blueberry lemonade were pretty great too. It took us about 20 minutes to get our order, which makes sense because we watched them make our pizza from scratch! This pizza is quite pricey (~74$ for 3 pizzas), but if you like a thicker styled pizza, it will hit the spot (it sort of reminds me of an elevated form of pizza hut lol). The edges are quite crispy yet the overall crust is fluffy. I wished there was more pepperoni it had those nice crisp ends. I personally am not a big fan of bbq pizzas, but they were still pretty good. The mix of sausage and peppers is a good combo, but I could barely taste them because of the bbq sauce. I've been to this restaurant several times and it has never disappointed me. The food is absolutely delicious, and the cucumber mint lemonade is to die for. Chef Kurt has curated the most delicious pizza combinations that are very different than anything out there. The service is also stellar. I appreciated how there was not any pork in the pepperoni and sausage, like there would be in other pizza places. Even though the pizza is a bit pricey ($25) and a bit small, it can be shared between two people, and since the pizza is thick and covered with a generous amount of toppings, it is filling. As a side note, the mushrooms were a bit salty on the pizza. After learning about their business model and mission I was more excited to try them. Knowing they are popular and can sell out some days, I ordered ahead online. We got the Uptown vibes with sauce and vegetables and Break You Off with lamb sausage, ricotta, za'ataar, and honey. We obviously over-ordered and had pizza for DAYS. But we got to try 2 very different styles. And pizza days are the best days, aren't they? The crust is fluffy and less dense than other square pies I've had. (But it is still quite filling.) The sauce was sweet and spicy. My husband loved it. I ended up liking the sauce-less pie better. The lamb sausage (no pork served here) was good, and I usually prefer meatless pizza. When I arrived for pickup, the place was busy. It's takeout only (no delivery and the space is small), and there were folks waiting on their pies. Turns out it was their one-year anniversary, and walk-ins got a free pie! But I didn't mind paying to support their mission. I even got a free tee shirt and didn't have to wait. My order was ready on-time when I walked in. Despite the busy day and the celebration, they kept up with orders easily and weren't flustered at all. The place is great, appreciate the owners vision and how compassionate he is about supporting incarcerated felons. I've heard a lot of good things from people, and tried it out the first time this week and was left disappointed. I ordered the roc the mic pizza, honey chipotle cauliflower, and wings and drove 30 minutes to pick it up. My man paid online and when I went to pick it up the person up front said they didn't have the cauliflower and would reimburse me... a week has passed and never saw that money back. Pizza was good, I'm from Chicago and have had deep dish pizza and Detroit style pizzas in Michigan so this was pretty accurate, but it's astonishing that it's $24 for a personal 10-12 inch pie with 6 slices. I'm not even a big back but just because the dough thick doesn't mean I'm getting full from 3 slices. Wings were ok, not a lot of meat on them bones but sauce was good. I could see the pizzas being like $18-$20 but $23+ is wildin, especially when the front desk person had an attitude about refunding the cauliflower and it never happening. Ordered online and when we called because they wings were not listed they told us to put it in the notes and they would be done when we arrived. I put in an online order for their "No Betta Love" pizza - I had read about their for-profit social mission and had to try them. Their pizza was indeed excellent, and I can see why they have the "Best of Philly 2021" square pie award. This is takeout only, by the way. When I arrived at the time I set for pickup, sure enough - the pizza was ready and waiting. I had about a 20 minute drive home, and that pizza held up beautifully. I should note that their Detroit pizza style might not be everyone's favorite, so I wish they made pizzas in other styles as well. I'm not a fan of such a thick crust - it's about an inch of crust alone, as you can see in my photo. It was really filling, so I shared the pizza with my neighbors, and they absolutely loved it. Different folks, different pizzas. They could perhaps improve their menu, especially for people looking at it the first time and who aren't already familiar with their pizzas and other items. They reference "norf sauce" on many pizzas, but don't explain what it is on the menu page (it's defined on the FAQ page, which isn't included in the header navigation bar - webmeister, take note!). They refer to a pizza as "4 cheeses" but don't identify them. Their "Uptown Vibes" pizza is listed with four veggie components plus norf sauce. But does that mean no cheese on the pizza? A vegan tomato veggie pie? From Yelper photos, it looks like it does have cheese on it. Still, it's a five-star place. read more

Despite the line of folks ahead of us waiting for their orders, our meal was prepared in less than the estimated 20 minutes. As I reentered the shop to grab my order, the worker paused. "So I know you ordered the Naked Fries... but we might have made you the Spicy Crab Fries. Is that ok?" A free upgrade to the premium side option? Yes, please! The pizza was topped with a four-cheese blend (mozzarella, Colby jack, Wisconsin cheddar, and provolone) and streaks of "Norf Sauce," this spot's signature sweet-and-spicy marinara. The crust was thick yet fluffy, and each bite was pleasantly rich without feeling overwhelmingly heavy. As a non-crust lover, my favorite parts of these pies turned out to be the edges, where the cheese spilled over to the sides and crisped right up. And the fries -- move over Chickie and Pete's! Doused with melty cheese, old bay, and crab meet Down North's crab fries have you beat any day. Based on flavor alone, I don't see how anyone would prefer the Naked Fries. That being said, I can't comment on how well the topped fries would travel (we chowed down right on the spot), but I imagine it would progressively descend into a soggy mess. With so many premium pizzerias popping up around Philly, the Down North team goes a slice above the rest, offering their distinct flair to their pies. Individual 'zzas from $18 to $25, but don't be deceived by the seemingly small size -- a single pizza is hearty enough to split comfortably between at least two folks. My second trip was on a rainy Friday during lunch hour to pick up a limited special pizza "Break You Off" - lamb sausage, ricotta, basil, lemon honey and zaatar. The specials that they run have always sounded exciting and enticing with new flavors so I made a trip over. The street that the shop is on didn't have any open street parking, in contrast to my first visit on a Saturday, but the side streets had plenty of open spots. I arrived at 12:25pm (they open at 12p) and the small interior of the store was already full of patrons waiting for their order. This place was busy!! Within an hour of opening, they took down the sign for the special, which I took to mean that they were sold out for the day. I was glad I arrived when I did. They were not taking online preorders for the special, walk in only. This visit was less smooth than my first, which I attributed to how busy they were and they are a new shop still working things out. When I paid, they said the wait would be 20 mins but it was closer to 45 mins. The spicy crab fries were also heavier on the salt than I remember them being, but still good. With that said, the "Break You Off" special was so delicious that all was forgiven/forgotten in the first bite. The flavors of the lamb offset by the sweetness of the lemon honey danced on my tastebuds. The dough was the perfect vehicle and didn't take away from the toppings. My 5 star rating hasn't changed because of the quality of the food - this pizza place is so unique and I would highly recommend following them on IG if you want to try one of their specials. Slangin pizza, saving lives, serving delicious pies! My husband, who grew up in the area, made sure we visited this place on our trip back East. 10/10 would definitely recommend and come back again. The crust is Detroit style (so a lot of bread) but it's well balanced with the amount of toppings and cheese they give you. We got 2 pizzas for 2 people, but the portions were so large I think 2 people could split 1 pizza if you're not super hungry. These guys have amazing pizza... Detroit style, but truly one of a kind with their sauce. Really damn good. But as good as the pizza is, which is one of my favorites in Philadelphia, the story behind this place is even better. They are making a difference in the lives of their employees and of their community. The guys there could not be any nicer and have got customer service down to a T. I've ordered directly from the store and through DoorDash delivery. Taste great both times but direct from the store Definitely gets the win. read more

My wife and I moved here two years ago and still haven't found OUR pizza shop. It was Franco's hands down when we lived over in Port Richington. This is partly because we don't share the same likes and dislikes when it comes to the perfect slice. I hope none of my previous reviews say we have found OUR pizza shop. Guess I'll look pretty foolish. Which brings us to the joint. If you're expecting the normal stuff you might not be happy. This is more deep dish and the sauce has some bite to it. I absolutely loved it. The pie looks small but it's an inch thick. The outer edges were so nice and crispy. We got the "rock the mic" that had pepperoni and mushrooms on it. Only thing that sucked was we got fries too and they weren't delivered. They did show up ten minutes early though. That would've pushed me to stay at 4 stars..... But I read about what this place is trying to do. They are a second chance employer that is giving people getting out a chance to get back on their feet. I want the places I spend my money to stand for something. It's the quickest way to enact change in a capitalist country. read more
