When you first walk up to the place, it looks very inviting and like a cool hang out spot, but don't let that fool you. Overall, quite a disappointment. We had a party of six in a virtually empty restaurant. After a few minutes of being seated, the waiter came out and asked if we were ready to order our food. But we hadn't ordered drinks yet. After ordering 5 cocktails, we sat and waited for 20 minutes before anything showed up, and only after one of our party left out of frustration did the drinks show up. The bartender came out and apologized and said that each drink took some time to make, which is why it was slow. We realized after that fact that 4 out of the 5 drinks were listed as draft cocktails, so they should have just been able to be poured and served. Stepping down off the main drag into a classy outdoor dining area and an even more impressive bar area. If you are a fan of Bourbon this is a place you must check out. Their Happy Hour is pretty good, we ended up paying $9 for three good craft beers. The food menu looked good, but we just drank beer and sipped a little Bourbon from their extensive list. Disclaimer- this review is for drinks only! We wandered in here after the Katy Perry concert after being unable to get a cab due to the crush of people leaving the concert. So glad we found this place! The one thing that stood out most to me about this place was that it was around midnight- and I was fully expecting the service to be not-so-great. Being a former server myself, I know how it can get after midnight and you can get fed up easily but every single employee of this place was awesome and so friendly. When we were ready to go our server used an app on her phone to call a cab and came and got us when he got there. Now that's service! We had a bourbon flight and a couple of beers and totally enjoyed ourselves out on the patio. Their bourbon selection is out of control- and they have certain flights that are pre-chosen that all complement each other which is really cool. Also have a great draft beer selection. Stay far away from Down One if you're planning on ordering food. I came here a couple weeks ago for a Friday lunch with a small work group. One member of our party had made reservations for us to ensure we wouldn't have to wait. When we arrived, nobody was at the hostess stand. We saw two ladies sitting on a bench and assumed they were waiting for a table. A couple of us walked around, peeked inside the bar, stood back at the hostess stand. Eventually, one of those two ladies stood up and asked if we needed a table. Not sure why we weren't asked when we got there initially. Anyway, we let them know we had made reservations and confusion abounded...they said we wouldn't need reservations and just put us at a table outside. The service did not get better from there. The waitress took forever to take drink and food orders, on top of getting our food and checks out to us. The lunch took us nearly two hours, which is NOT okay on a weekday. I had the turkey sandwich and it was good, but I will never be back for a meal due to the service issues. Maybe I'll stop in again for a drink. read more

I've been to Down One a few times, but only twice for food. As far as drinks go, it shines as a place to go for happy hour with a wonderful outdoor area that feels both separate from the bustle of the street, but still right in the middle of the city. My food had mixed results. I did not care for the chicken salad. I went over a year ago, so it's hard to remember, but the big chunks of chicken were too large and were maybe dark meat and a little stringy. However, I just went recently and I had the 3 little pigs (BBQ, pork belly, and bacon sandwich) which was very good. I particularly liked the brussels sprouts (also with bacon). The waitstaff is always friendly, but they are very busy so sometimes not as attentive as I'd like when refilling drinks. Overall, my esteem has grown over the times I have been for drinks. Foodies, find a different dinner spot. We should have left the minute we walked in to an EMPTY restaurant at 7:30 on a Saturday night. Food lacked depth, complexity and balance. ESPECIALLY for the prices. The bacon wrapped dates were way too sweet. The baked pesto chicken was under seasoned and dry (but the risotto was good!). Bourbon list wasn't up to date and we were disappointed when our favorites weren't available. If I could rate our waitress' service separately, I'd give her 5/5. A friend and I went here for lunch during a conference. We ordered the "30 Minute Lunch" deal - which clearly stated that if you didn't get your lunch in 30 minutes then it is free. After 40 minutes, we had to get back for our next session. The server told us we'd still have to pay even though we hadn't gotten our food! The manager gave us a card and said our next meal was on him. Too bad we aren't from the area and are never there except for the one time a year conference. We weren't given any refills on our water. The wife and I had almost an hour and a half to kill before our tour started at the nearby Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. We decided to grab lunch at Down One Bourbon Bar & Restaurant since we were across the street and its rating on Yelp was strong. Intended or not, the Down One Bourbon Bar & Restaurant was true to its name, down one flight of stairs from the sidewalk off of Main St. It had a nice tree-covered patio for al fresco dining separated from the dining area by large rollup doors. It was fairly busy, looking like it attracted a good lunch crowd largely consisting of workers from the surrounding office buildings, not tourists. Although it was a beautiful day, we opted to sit inside. This was likely a mistake as things worked out. The place was also true to its name by having a solid selection of bourbons and other whiskeys on hand. Unfortunately, we passed on the bourbon and only had food from the otherwise promising looking lunch menu. I ordered Three Little Pigs sandwich made with roasted pork belly, pulled pork, and bacon on a soft roll topped with a mustard-based BBQ sauce, pickles, and slaw. The wife had the Roasted Portabella Mushroom "Burger" topped with smoked gouda, red leaf lettuce, avocado, and chipotle mayo on a soft roll. Both sandwiches came with a side of house-fried potato chips. Then we waited...and waited...and waited for our food to come out. As we were waiting, we noted that our server had a very large section, serving tables in the bar area where we were seated, out on the patio, and also in the main dining room. Although there were other servers on duty, none of them seemed to have as many tables, let alone as spread out, as our server. When our food finally arrived, delivered by someone other than our server, it was lukewarm at best. Other than it not being served hot, my sandwich was over-sauced with the mustard BBQ overwhelming everything else, and the roll was soggy having sopped up all of the juices from the pork components. The wife's sandwich was just as sad as a cold mushroom was topped by cold, congealed gouda cheese. The chips weren't a saving grace as they were massively over-salted making each chip look as if they were salt-crusted and essentially inedible. It was obvious to us that our food had sat at the pass for an extended period of time before being run out to our table. If we'd had more time and didn't have someplace to be, we would've sent our food back and asked for it to be redone. As it was, we left a lot of our lunch untouched. It was a shame that our lunch was so memorable in its disappointment. Maybe we caught Down One Bourbon Bar & Restaurant on a bad day. That said, it was easily the worst meal we had while in Bourbon Country. read more

Down One Bourbon Bar is one of my favorite downtown Louisville Restaurants. I often suggest it, to other people, and make it my choice, when I will be downtown. The bourbon selection is incredible. They are on the Urban Bourbon Trail. We have a bourbon group, with some friends, and we love to go here. I like the bourbon cocktails, my husband likes his bourbon neat. They do have other drinks, besides bourbon. I have never been, for lunch, but I am sure it is great, for lunch. The Blue Cheese Stuffed Dates wrapped in bacon are a must. The Charcuterie tray is very nice. Salads are great. Weisenberg Jalapeño-Cheddar Grits are just YUM. And, so are the Roasted Brussels Sprouts. I have a friend that loves the burger, if they still have it. The brisket, chicken, and pork belly all make me hungry thinking about them. They have some sort of special almost every night. Table servers are great. The worst thing about this place is, if you want to go on Sunday, and you forget they are closed, on Sunday. read more

So bummed! We are local to Louisville and have eaten here several times. The first two times were excellent. Last night, however, was a total let down. We were on our way to a sold out show at the Kentucky Center and were looking for a place to eat. All of our other favorite haunts downtown were on an hour or longer wait and we didn't have that much time. So, we were pleasantly surprised when this place was more than half empty. The hostess was friendly and seated us right away. Our server was also very friendly. The music being played on the patio was way too loud. We had to scream at each other across a table for two. When we glanced at the menu we were shocked! All of our favorites were gone!!! The Three Pigs Sandwich, the Brussel Sprouts, and the Date appetizer. We asked our server and she explained that the restaurant is owned by The Gault House and they changed the menu two weeks ago. Other than a slaw there is no veggie on the sides selection. My husband is eating a low carb diet. So, as an appetizer we ordered the Pimento Cheese. It was good but not great. The consistency was more like a Beer Cheese. For our entrees I ordered their version of the Cuban Sandwich. My husband ordered the burger. He asked for a side option other than slaw. They offered a side salad that wasn't on the menu. He agreed. When our food came his burger cam out with a cold piece of cheese on top. They didn't even try to melt it. His side salad was pathetic. Basically, a Spring Mix with one Cherry Tomato and croutons (which he took off). My Cuban Sandwich was loaded with some stone ground mustard. So, much that I had to take the sandwich apart and scrape it off. My sweet potato fries were very underwhelming. They were just some frozen fries they through in a deep fryer. In our opinion, this experience was typical of a hotel run restaurant. If all you want is a Bourbon drink then their list of Bourbons is perfect. This place is nice for a drink. This place has a great patio for sitting outside and an excellent drink menu. Of course bourbon is the theme and the cocktails are excellent!! I enjoyed the cardinal smoke, very sweet cocktail. The manhattan my brother in law ordered was very good as well, slightly bitter. The server was very knowledgeable and friendly. The food looked delicious from a far and we'll def come back to try it. So the bourbon selection was amazing, good selection of flights. I had the Old Fitzgerald, Old Fitzgerald 1849, and the Down One Single Barrel by Forrestor. Now I usually drink Irish whiskey and good scotch (not many of those) but I did like these 3, sweet with no real bite, nice spice and after taste. My palate couldn't differentiate much between them.
