Came here on a Friday night with some friends for dinner. We made a reservation beforehand and were seated immediately. I had the lily cocktail and we ordered the chips and queso as an appetizer. The queso had chorizo mixed in and was amazing. I had the burger and fries for my entree. Our food came out quickly. We had comments and questions from the table next to us about our orders because it looked so good. It tasted delicious as well. It was a bit messy to eat but oh so good. The fries had a bit of seasoning on them and came out in a pretty big portion. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. I would definitely visit again. read more

Stopped in for a quick lunch while doing some distilleries on Main Street. My husband got the el fuego sandwich- he rated it as a 3/5, the chicken was very tough but the other flavors were good. I got the loaded nachos with pork, they were good but not great- maybe a little bit too salty between the cheese and sauce. Atmosphere is nice but nothing special. We did the Trolley Bus tour (which was awesome), and wanted someplace close by to grab a late lunch/early dinner (2:30 ish) so most places around aren't open then. We decided to give Down One Bourbon Bar a try and we are SO glad we did!!! I'll keep it brief. But Debbie was our server and she was Awesome! As was the food, drinks, atmosphere and the cleanliness!! There was three of us and we decided on appetizers to start. We got the fried cheese curds - omg - soooooo dang good!!! Then the nachos came and they were fantastic too. A huge platter spread out so you could get "stuff" on each chip. So good! By the time we're done with the appetizers we were done - stick a fork in us! Oh wait, the best part was the Kentucky Tea.... oh man, awesome, hit the spot!!!! I took a sandwich (the El Fuego) home for my hubby who always complains. He loved it!!! I came here with a group of almost 20 on a Wednesday night. We were trying to find a spot close to our hotel and this fit the bill. There wasn't a big crowd, so they got us in right away. Once there, it wasn't the vibe that I was expecting. It's not really a bourbon bar, it feels more like a taco place. Maybe it has a new owner/direction and the signage & name hasn't changed yet? Anyway, they just had a few bourbons (for downtown Louisville) and menu full of taco-type options. Our food was pretty good and there were cheese curds (at a taco place) which was interesting. The service kind of disappeared once our food came out, though. If anyone was needing another drink they were out of luck! After waiting a while for our checks, I eventually had to get up and find a server to request our tickets. I know that's the norm in Europe, but...this is Kentucky. Down One Bourbon Bar is an incredible, classy bourbon bar located in the heart of downtown Louisville. I didn't read the negative reviews, nor did I eat here, but I cannot figure out why they only have a 3.5 rating. Easily a 4-star bar, almost a 5-star bar. The standouts at Down One are its actual bar and, of course, the bourbon. They have a lot of it. You can find something you love at any price. As the name implies, you need to walk down a small flight of stairs, past an open outdoor patio, to enter. After entering, you are greeted by a hostess station and several lower dining tables with large comfy padded chairs surrounding each. Walk past all of this to the L-shaped bar in the rear. The bar is magnificent. It has a dark, glossy wooden bar top with a matching rail. Below a matching bar face, there is a round brass footrest. Lining the bar are several padded square bar stools with back support. The back bar is gorgeous with stained glass, bottle shelves, and an HDTV. Though I was the only person there, the service was friendly and very helpful. The bartender introduced me to several bourbons that I'd never heard of, explained each one, and provided great recommendations. Ignore the 3.5 rating. I highly recommend Down One if you are in downtown Louisville. I know I plan to stop each time I'm in the area. read more

We tried out Down One for our first time last Friday before we went to the Kentucky Center. We had reservations but they weren't completely packed but our server seemed to be busy enough for slow service. I had a side salad add on for $3, which had lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and croutons. And I tried the ranch dressing which was runny but surprisingly tasty. The chicken sandwich with pimento cheese was very basic. I kinda wished I hadn't wasted calories on it. But it was just fine enough for dinner as their menu options were limited to tacos and sandwiches. We also tried the brisket biscuit (not to be confused with the sandwich, which is what our waitress first brought us). This thing is HUGE, you can def split it with another person. It is an huge four biscuit with brisket, pickles and a gravy on top. Pretty good. This is a great spot if you need a large selection of bourbon to choose from, but we had an okay experience here. I did not read any reviews before coming here. I was lured in with the free live acoustic music on Saturday. The restaurant is somewhat hard to find. It's literally down one! You have to take the steps down to get there. I'm not sure if there's an elevator but if not; it might not be accessible for everyone. When I got there around 6:30 pm, it was completely dead! Not many customers there for the live music. The food offered here is like Americanized Mexican food. I would pass on it. It's not terrible, but I would rather eat somewhere else. I liked that the bartender was very knowledgeable and service oriented. He made some great beer recommendations. If you're looking for a chill atmosphere, live music, and drinks - this might be the place for you! read more

Down One is an average, OK place to grab a bite/drink. It is conveniently located next to the Yum Center, Actor's Theatre and the Galt House, so it makes for a nice pre-event meal. We made a reservation on OpenTable, although for a Friday night it didn't seem like it was needed, not too crowded. I was a tad confused why we were put at a bar table with a reservation, and there was plenty of open tables in the main section, but nothing to make a big fuss over. After dining here I can definitely see it more as a drinking spot than a place to grab dinner. They have bourbon flights and all kinds of local spirits to try. The food is pretty much bar food, nothing out of this world but something to go good with a drink. I also felt bad because the bartender was taking care of about 4 tables while handling the entire bar, making the service suuuuper slow. I had to go up to the bar just to get a refill. If I could leave a zero I would, my husband came in at 3:58 PM on a Thursday afternoon. There were a handful of tables occupied and 3 servers. We were served water quickly. However after that, it was if we were invisible. We had been seated for about 10 minutes. My husband thought maybe we were supposed to order at bar. Bartender said if you are at a table someone will come to your table. Soon after a table of about 6 men came in and were immediately waited on. My husband unsuccessfully attempted to wave someone down. Seriously, it was if we were invisible. We left and won't be back. We walked across the street to BBQ Beer and received excellent, friendly service. This restaurant was a pleasant surprise. It is by the Yum Center. There is parking available in the nearby garages and some street. We were able to make reservations and were seated quickly. There was water available for the table. I got the cod fish street tacos and side of fries. The fish tacos had a whole fish and slaw in the taco making it very filling. I got the side of fries becuase I was worried about it not being filling, however it was not the case. The fries were also very good. The seasoning on them was well balanced. The side of fries was $3 but they gave a whole serving tray. I would recommend making reservations before going to ensure a quick seat. Love the bourbon selection and food at this quaint little bar and restaurant in Louisville, KY. Down One has all the Pappy Van Winkle selections and many more selections. I tried a blackberry bourbon drink that was excellent. The fish tacos, cheese curds and burgers were all very good. Very disappointed in this place. My friend and I decided to check out the happy hour tonight. After asking for the happy hour menu specifically , we ordered the draft beer special. We picked the Guinness draft after the server told us there really were only 3 drafts to choose from total from the bar (menu showed way more)... completely off from menu. Then, looked and saw bottled beer was on happy hour so we order 4 Coronas. Safe to say apparently none of these drink were happy hour. And the server we specially said we were there for happy hour and wanted the happy hour never mentioned what beers were not included. My friend and I recommend a ton of places to those visiting Louisville for bourbon weekly ...Safe to say after this double billed fake happy hour, I doubt we will ever recommend this place. Other than that, my friends and I really enjoyed our food. There's a good vibe too. We shared queso with tortilla chips and a few entrees because none of us could decide! Queso- delicious! Brisket grilled cheese- delicious! Brisket taco- delicious! Chicken adobo Taco- very average. If there was adobo marinade or sauce I couldn't taste it. I will definitely be back to Down One. I will preface with that we were a large party so it may have been challenging managing all of the orders but I didn't have a great experience. The menu seemed interesting but unfortunately the food did not live up to it. The Wagyu taco was flavorful, but pretty chewy for wagyu, the ahi tuna poke taco was kind of gelatinous and not pleasant. The service staff were friendly enough but asked me what I ordered four times throughout the meal, eventually bringing my my second taco halfway through and then remembering my appetizer near the end, which I asked them to just not bring since we were close to being done. I asked for a water after everyone in my party was brought water at the beginning, I asked for it a few more times as the servers came back, and they continually assured me it was coming, but it never came. I asked for just a glass so I could pour my own since they had brought carafes of water but that never came either. I ordered a regular Pepsi, they brought me a Diet Pepsi and I apologized and asked for a regular one instead, and later the server was going over my order again and said I had a Diet Pepsi, I told him it was regular again and he said "oh yeah because you changed it" (I didn't change it, my party also heard me order correctly the first time). All in all, ok food for the price, service was not the best in my experience. read more

Fun place for a meal in the bar. They have lots & lots of whisky samples,including flights. I recommend the tortilla soup. The consistency is like chili but it tastes like chicken tortilla.
