We had a great experience here last week. I was having some issues with my car AC and called them and was able to promptly get scheduled for service. Everything was straightforward and organized. They asked if we could pick up the car sooner than planned which was a little tricky within the workday schedule, but they offered to slightly reduce the bill to cover Uber to get my husband there to when we didn't have an extra car- I thought was a nice gesture. I went to downtown car care for the first time today and I have so many great things to say about my experience. I called at 10am with a few different issues and by 2pm the SAME day my car was fixed for far less the price than I was expecting. As a single woman living downtown, I often get nervous that car places are going to rip me off because I don't know a lot about cars, but the person I spoke to was supportive and answered all my questions. I had issues with my tire pressure sensors, as well as a slow leak in 2 of my tires. I struggled to get in anywhere else, with some of their competitors in the area giving me the run around. I called them to make an appointment and I was able to take my car in first thing the next morning. They had my tires repaired and the sensors fixed in no time. **BIG PREDATORY ALERT*** Do not come if you don't have money to spare. I had my brake lights on and was told to come in the same day for them to examine my car. What they didn't tell me was how much they'd charge just to look at it. It's pretty freaking unethical to corner me to pay for something without warning that it would cost $92 just for them to take a look at my car. And that price wouldn't even go towards the actual service. I understand this is a business but at least have a notice somewhere or warn customers that there's a fee and have consent before forcing a customer to pay. read more

Mad props to Emily for pointing me toward Downtown Car Care, because never in a million years would I have noticed their storefront or otherwise come in to this auto shop. Heck, I drove past it twice (in tiny Fletcher Place) before I found it! This review is for a simple oil change and estimate received on recommended work to be done only. I haven't had anything major done, but just with the encounter I had, I'd trust them to do the right thing. Five stars cause they gave me everything I was expecting and more. Yes, they were friendly and approachable. Yes, they completed the work I came for well. Yes, they were flexible in the scheduling and able to squeeze me in a day before my appointment. Yes, they gave me a ride downtown to my office when I dropped Dara (the car-a) off. Yes, they explained everything to me and were straight up. More or less, I expect all that. What exceeded my expectations was them being able to stay a bit past closing to explain my options and help me prioritize their assessment of what needed to be fixed and when. What also went beyond my expectation was them seeking out a lower cost alternative to the part I'd need and finding it $50 cheaper. Downtown Car Care is highly recommended in my book and I'll be back to get some of that stuff they told me to get done done! read more

Had to have alternator replaced. I know a bit about cars so I was able to say no to the first estimate. I hate to have someone else repair my vehicles but it is too cold out and I'm too far away from home to do it. They were able to get me in and fix it today. That was great for me. I'll have to drive it to see if the work was good. I'll amend the review later. EDIT So, I started driving got three blocks and the battery light came on. Took the car back and found out the replacement alternator was not charging the battery. No worries, mistakes are made and I understand that. The owner called up the company that furnished the alternator and got refunded his mechanic's labor time. My time however for the entire day was wasted. No work, so this cost me more than the actual repair. As for the part he charged 225% more than the part actually cost. And labor was fair. read more

For years, if I could help it, I drove back to my hometown to go to our family friend of a mechanic to avoid finding a new mechanic altogether. Well, no more worries because I found the best one -- Downtown Car Care Center. Bob and Kathy make you feel assured and relaxed in knowing your car is in good hands, and they're honest about the whole process. They have a valet service so that you're not inconvenienced by leaving your vehicle behind, as well! Scheduling is flexible and easy over the phone. The location is superb for any downtown dweller. The cost is a little higher than maybe what the sketchy guys at Walmart may charge, but hey... I'll pay more to know my vehicle is in good hands. I couldn't ask for more from them. Terrible experience. I went in for a simple tire repair (nail). I made an appointment for first thing in the morning so I wouldn't have to wait long. I waited 90 minutes (worked on laptop) before finally asking about my repair. They said they couldn't repair it and I needed 4 new tires. They did nothing to the car at all during that time. I dropped my car off at 930 am this morning for an oil change and an AC repair. Kathy offered me a ride home (10 minutes away), which was really thoughtful, and they seem like a company that doesn't try to rip you off. She even straight up told me, "If we see something with your car but it doesn't have to be fixed for a while, we'll let you know you're okay." Update: I was a bit annoyed yesterday when I called at 4 (almost 7 hours later) and Bob told me they hadn't started on it yet. But when I arrived this morning, the guys had checked everything out and gave me a reasonable price. He also told me to come back for any more advice, especially with my car (electrical and engine problems) and possibly looking into a new car. He wants to get to know me and my car and genuinely cares about his customers. read more

These are the friendliest car people around. My car was here for two days, and during that time, the shop stayed in contact with me about everything. I was suffering from automotive hypochondria, and agreed to pay for a diagnostic test. The test came back clear, meaning everything was fine with my car. The shop was honest with me- they didn't take advantage of my situation or try to sell me $200 worth of stuff I didn't need. I really appreciate this. The owner was cool, as well as the other employees I encountered. Nobody was rude or short with me. Picture this: New to the city. Your Dad is 600 miles away. You don't have a boyfriend. And last Friday night, you put clothes and an overnight bag in your back seat, closed the back door, and....the door bounced back open. You slam it several times and get some boys passing by to take a look but no one can figure it out. After taking the car to the creepy mechanic down the street who told you to order the piece from Lexus and bring it back to him to repair...Oh, and to "call Frenchie if you ever get lonely," you find out just the piece you need is $225 from the Lexus dealership. You put (classy) duck tape on your back window and decide to wait it out a few days until you regroup and find another option. After considering getting under-the-table work done or simply getting a new car, you decide to look on Yelp for a good car spot around Indy. That's when you find Downtown Car Care. And your life is immediately enriched. From the first phone call I placed to Bob, the owner, I felt like I could actually trust a car shop to not take advantage of me. On the phone Bob asked me to bring my car in to get an estimate. I brought it in later that day and he not only remembered me, he knew exactly what was wrong. I left my car at Downtown Car Care and was told they would call me before spending any of my money and the car should be ready before next Tuesday. I walked home (Have I mentioned the fantastic location?!) and received a phone call the next day from Bob. Bob: "Hey Alison, This is Bob. I wanted to let you know that your car is going to cost $200.86." Alison: "You mean just for the part?" Bob: "Nope, the whole thing. And Alison, it should be ready by tomorrow night." I get a call the next day from Bob that my car was ready, 4 and a half days before I expected. He had found a good deal on a used part in great-condition and made my car a priority. I would not hesitate to bring my car back to Bob and Downtown Car Care and would recommend the spot to anyone looking for honest, efficient mechanics. read more

Getting car repairs always seems like a rip off, but it's necessary maintainence. This is my second time at this establishment. The first time I came I had to get a light light bulb replaced. I thought the labor cost were a bit high, but the convenience factor counter balanced that concern. Today, I had to get my window switch handle replaced and the labor price was more reasonable given the price of the product. So, in the end I guess it all balances out. I would definitely go back. The employees are very polite and courteous and the service is of great quality. Things to know: 1. They are really good at giving quotes before they start work so just ask and the will oblige. 2. The best feature is that if you live or work in the downtown area they will give you a ride to and from work/home while your car is being worked on. This benefit was especially helpful seeing that it is the middle of winter and I have no intentions of walking anywhere! read more

I've started telling everyone I can about Downtown Car Care because these gentlemen are fantastic. My first time there, I needed a tail light replaced. I walked in and explained my situation, and the gentleman pulled one off the shelf, walked out to my car and put it in immediately, and told me it was on the house. I was so pleasantly surprised! This time, I needed a full set of tires and a headlight replaced (clearly I have light issues...). They got me in for a next day appointment. I dropped the car off, chatted for awhile about which type of tires I'd need, and was offered a ride downtown. I mentioned that I was just going to walk down the block to the coffee shop. Low and behold 30 minutes later, the gentleman working on my car shows up at the coffee shop to give me an update and grab a cup of coffee. My car ended up being done right on time (even though initially I thought I only needed to have 2 tires replaced). Probably the greatest thing about this place is that all of the folks who work here are 55+ and give off a cool fatherly feel. I'll second what someone else said--as a woman, there's always a concern that you're being taken advantage of when it comes to cars, and these gentlemen are up front and honest. Like anyone who is mostly ignorant about the mysterious inner workings of cars, I'm hoping and praying each time I try a new mechanic that they won't take advantage of my ignorance. I want a service provider who will treat me with respect, offer a fair price and help keep my old Honda (aka Betty) running for as long as possible. I called Downtown Car Care because Betty was inexplicably vibrating and needed an oil change to boot. They gave me an appointment later that week since it wasn't an emergency. After I dropped my car off, Bob gave me a ride to work. He gave me a call shortly with a diagnosis (I needed two new tires) and quoted me a fair price for the tires and the oil change. I was able to pick up my car at about 3 that day. All in all, a painless experience, which is what I'm looking for when I go to the mechanic. I'm happy, Betty is happy. Next time I need service, I will definitely return to this quality mom-n-pop auto shop. read more

These guys are top-notch mechanics. The only reason I no longer go there is because I live and work too far away. They were my go-to mechanics for years when I lived downtown. There were several times that I thought I had a very expensive issue, and it turned out to be something simple (and inexpensive) to fix. As a single girl, I often feel that mechanics can sometimes be out to screw you over. I NEVER felt that was the case with these guys. If you work downtown, they'll even give you a ride to work and pick you up when your car is done. That is service, my friends! read more

Toward the end of last year, my car had died while crossing some railroad tracks. That's not good. I took my car to Downtown Car Care because, well, I live downtown. Things did not go smoothly. Initially, I had some oxygen sensors replaced, but my car was still stalling and the check engine light was still on. So, I took it back for a second time and it was determined that the Body Control Module (BCM) needed to be replaced. Fortunately, I was in a position to borrow a vehicle from work, so I could leave my car there and still not miss any work, otherwise this would have been an even bigger mess since my car was in the shop for over two weeks (probably close to three). I knew something was fishy the second time I picked up my car since it took, literally, over 35 minutes for them to "bring it around" from the back (my ride had already made it all the way back to Fishers in the time I was waiting for them to bring it around). So, I get in my car and drive away. Needless to say, at a gas station, about ten minutes later, the car died again and the check engine light was already back on. Quite obviously they knew something was wrong with my car, but instead of saying they hadn't properly fixed it, they, finally, brought it around and just let me drive off. Instead of taking it back for a third time, since God only knows how much more I would have had to pay (I was already in about $1,200 to $1,300 at this point) or how much longer I would have been without a vehicle, I decided to take it to a dealership. Well, it turns out they incorrectly programmed the BCM (you only get to program it once per VIN) and they incorrectly installed one of the oxygen sensors. Oh, and in the meantime, the clock/dashboard display lights stopped working and the button to open my truck fell into my vehicle since my dash was never properly put back together, as evidenced by the fact that the ashtray was also incorrectly sitting in its groove (these are still issues I have today since the dealership didn't do it, they weren't going to correct these issues for free). Aside from these issues, the car has been running fine since the dealership made their repairs. So, I had to take the BCM back to Downtown Car Care to get a refund. I was only refunded for the price of the BCM and the labor involved in incorrectly programming it. As for the incorrectly installed sensor I was not given a refund because "you can't install the sensor incorrectly" according to the shop. Now, I'm no car genius, but I'm pretty sure there is a wrong way to install almost anything. If you duct tape the sensor to the vehicle, that is the wrong way. If you force it in upside down or backwards, that is the wrong way. If you load it into a shotgun and blast it into place, that is the wrong way. My point being, it was rather flippant to proclaim there is no wrong way to install a part. So, I had to pay labor twice for the exact same part to be installed (by the way, according to the dealership, it was put in backwards). In conclusion, my experience was, obviously, a big, drawn-out, annoying mess that made me lose money. Not recommended. read more

I have finally found my go to mechanics. They were honest, friendly, and extremely reasonable price-wise. I had a radiator hose split in my '99 honda civic, which shot coolant everywhere in the engine bay. The engine quickly overheated and so I had to have it towed. I called Downtown Car Care as the reviews on Yelp were so positive and they suggested a towing company to get it to the shop. The charge was $55, which I didn't think was too bad. I told them my immediate problem, along with the other issues I've had with the car (mainly loose steering and damaged exhaust). He quickly got back to me, confirming the radiator hose needed to be replaced. He also said the steering was loose, but I could probably hold off on fixing it. He had also mentioned the majority of the exhaust needed to be replaced as their was a problem with the catalytic converter. The thing that made me really appreciate Downtown Car Care, was that he actually suggested a muffler place that could fix my exhaust for cheaper than he could. I can't say I've ever encountered customer care like that from an auto shop. In the past, every time I've taken the car for an oil change, I get a laundry list of items they want me to fix (usually totaling $1200-1500). After this radiator mishap, I was really expecting the bill to be far higher than the $188 that I ended up paying. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I think the fact that it's so hard to find good mechanics that you're comfortable with made this a particularly good experience. I will be quick to recommend these guys to anyone looking for a good mechanic. read more

I really want to fairly rate Downtown Car Care but I'm not knowledgeable about cars. However, I'd like to share my experience and perceptions. Every time I bring my car in (4 or so times), there's always something else that needs to be fixed. Always a strut that needs to be replaced on a car I jut drove off a dealership, a $60 spark plug, or something of the sort. Most recently, I took my car in to have a "tune-up" before I drove myself out to California. This tune up cost $900! Of course, there were things on the estimate that added up to $900, but they didn't bat a lash. And now my car is shakier than ever and the check engine engine light just decided to make an appearance. *If* I can get myself into a mechanic tomorrow, I'll update on the diagnosis. read more

Finding a reliable and trust-worthy mechanic can be a daunting task. Where to start? Downtown Car Care... It has 11 reviews, 4.5 stars... sounds easy. It's never that easy. Never. So, here's the deal. My check engine light came on intermittently, and I had the codes read to find out that I had a misfiring cylinder which tends to indicate that you need to replace your sparkplug and coil on that cylinder. Occasionally, the cylinder would act up and the car would seem to fire (literally) "not on all cylinders". It would hesitate and shake at idle or during acceleration. It should have been a straightforward repair. So, I schedule the appointment and drop my car off. I get a call a day later with the diagnosis of the check engine light. Apparently, the code is now for the catalytic converter. They suggest replacing all 6 cylinders and coils and they replace a solenoid. Altogether, $600+ dollars. Uggh, but okay... do it. When I dropped the car off, I also told them the car shifted hard from gear to gear and seemed to hesitate at times between gears. I asked them to look into this and told them they'd have to drive the car to see what I meant. I told them that it didn't do this immediately, but would start after 10 minutes or so. So, I inquire, "What about the shifting issue?" The response: "I think we've got that taken care of also. I think the stuff we did took care of that." Now, I'm no mechanic, far from it, but I was skeptical that replacing plugs and coils was going to solve a problem that was likely either with a computer or the transmission, but they're the experts, and surely they drove the car too, right? On the day I pick the car up, the check engine light is off. That's good. Unfortunately, within 90 minutes of driving through the day, the light is back on and the car is shifting just as hard as it ever did. There is NO way that they ever drove the car for more than a mile. Craptastic. Now I get to schedule another appointment and be without my car again for two days minimum. Oh, and since I picked my car up, it has now been squeaking like crazy from the ass-end. I call and tell them I'm planning to bring the car back in on Monday morning. The Friday prior, I call back to let them know that I plan to bring it back on Monday ask if they think they'll have it fixed that day or if it will take a few days. The 'desk guy' tells me that they are all booked up and won't be able to look at it that week. Annoyed, I remind him that this is why I called at the beginning of the week and told him that I'd be bringing the car back in because they hadn't fixed the issues the first time. He agrees to have the mechanics look at the car that Monday. So, I bring the car in to drop it off. I hand the 'desk guy' the keys and he says 'Ok, I'll call you in a couple hours when we know what's wrong.' Since this guy apparently had no recollection that I was bringing this car back in the first place, I asked "Umm, do you remember what you're fixing?" He replies, stammering, "Uhh... ummm... just not running good?" Seriously, dude? What is your plan? Just search for something that you could maybe fix or replace? So I remind him of the issues and I see him scrawl this out on a scrap of paper. Two hours later he calls back and says "The check engine light is for the catalytic converter now. You need a new catalytic converter." I point out the light was for the catalytic converter the last time and that this doesn't sound like something new. Him: "Last time we replaced the plugs, but now the light is for the catalytic converter." Me: What about the squeaking from the rear?" Him: "You need two new struts in the rear." Me: "How much for all of that?" Him: "$1850". Me, thinking there's no excuse for them not catching any of this the first time: "Don't do anything, I'll be down to get my car". It just so happened that that day I read something from Click and Clack in an online paper that mentioned the fact that catalytic converters - by law - are covered for 8 years and 80,000 miles on all cars. My car is 7 years old and has 75,000 miles on it. If anybody knows about this across the board warranty, it's a mechanic. I end up making an appointment at the Lincoln dealer. In the few days between picking my car up at Downtown "Car Care" and taking it to the dealer, I noticed what sounded like a rumble under the driver seat during acceleration. So, I tell the dealer about this when I drop the car off. After having the car for 30 minutes, they call and say "Yep, you totally need a new catalytic converter. And that rumble you hear is the converter too. It's literally falling apart... Oh, and your right rear strut is squeaky, but there's nothing wrong with it. You can replace it if you want, but save the money if it doesn't bother you... no charge." I wouldn't trust this place with my lawnmower. I've got a lot more to say about this place, but I'm apparently at my 5,000 character limit. read more

I wanted to like this place and to find a shop closer to home than, say, Greenwood, to repair my vehicle, so I was excited to see so many positive reviews on here for Downtown Car Care Center. Alas, I think this was more of a mixed-bag experience. The pricing and staff were fine, but the turnaround time and lack of communication were a little ridiculous. I made an appointment for 8 am the following Tuesday, letting them know I had two issues with my care: A failing headlight that needed complete replacing (not just the bulb inside) and a review of my brakes, which were squeaking an increasing amount. I dropped it off at 8 am and was immediately told "it'll be at least a couple of hours" because the crew was still working on finishing up cars from the day prior. No big deal, I thought--I was off on vacation all week, so I just Blue Indy'd it home. Around 11:30 am, I started getting antsy, so I called up the shop and they still hadn't looked at my car. Finally, around 3 pm, I get a call explaining very clearly what the issues are and decide to proceed on one of the repairs but not the other, which, it turns out, was still covered under warranty through Midas (Downtown Car Care alerted me to this, so I'm giving credit where credit is deserved). I call the shop around 3 pm the following day, as I had not heard anything all day long, to find out my part still hasn't arrived and that they won't get to it until Thursday. Ultimately, I pick it up around 2:30 pm that Thursday, after having dropped it off at 8 am two days prior. This was a bit of an inconvenience for my wife and I, as we only have one car and had to either Blue Indy or Lyft it everywhere those three days, including to/from work, around town, and so on. I initially picked Downtown Car Care for its convenience and quote on the headlight, which was about 25% cheaper than the Toyota dealership on Lafayette Road. Unfortunately, it wasn't super-convenient in the end or worth the $100 I saved because it severely limited my mobility and ability to get things done that week. In short, you'll save money if you go to Downtown Car Care and the staff is pleasant enough, but just be forewarned that things might take longer than you anticipate. read more

I can't think of any better way to say this, but this is the greatest mechanic I have ever been to. By greatest, I mean, honest, trustworthy and fair. You probably never hear those words when describing auto shops. When I first moved to Indy a year ago, I drove my car up from Nola. When I was leaving Nola I had my oil changed and a tune-up. The auto shop in Nola hassled me and was like, it's time for you to do this, it's time for you to do that, and I told them I simply could not afford it at the time, and I remembered having had some of those things done recently as well. Needless to say, the mechanic there was very rude to me, even when I had been going to that shop for a while, nothing to do with the manager though. Anyway, I brought my car in to Downtown Car Care on recommendation from my boss who has been bringing his car there for years. I asked them to check my car out for any problems, if I needed to get a flush, winterized, etc. They called me later that day and told me my car was in good condition and all the fluid levels were fine, and they were sorry that they couldn't charge me anything for that day! Hah! They just said to bring my car in any time for its next oil change. The second time I brought my car there for an oil change, one of the older mechanics, Davis, used my car to drop me off at work and he says, "What is that horrible sound? It's so loud can't you hear it? It's probably your wheel bearing on the right." I knew the sound he was talking about, but I had assumed the sound was from my tires. Before I moved up to Indy, I had my tires changed to all season tires at another mechanic in Nola. I ordered the tires online and it did have a loudness rating. I had driven around in my car several times and the loudness was very noticeable compared to my car before where it was generally very quiet when driving. The auto guys in Nola said nothing was wrong with it (liars!). They never noticed this sound the first time I brought it in to Downtown Car Care because my car just sat in their garage when they did the work and the sound is not noticeable when you aren't driving above 20. Anyway, got my car back and it was beautiful peace and quiet while driving my car, now I can hear people talk and not have to blast the radio to just try to understand some words. Davis was right, the back left wheel bearing had been busted. After having gone to the shop several times I am very pleased. The most recent time I was there was just two days ago. My car died, it seemed like it was a battery issue and I also needed my oil changed. I got my car towed in. They replaced the battery and were not able to start the car. The keys were not being recognized by the computer and they said the keys and control unit may have been messed up when the power was completely drained. My car had been at the shop for two days and in the end they said, they couldn't reprogram the computer because that has to be done at Nissan and my car was towed to Nissan. Downtown Car Care was very fair and did not charge me an arm for services and told me all the things they couldn't do. They cautioned me and told me when I brought it to Nissan to make sure that they only did the diagnostic and to tell them expressly not to do anything without my consent. Brought my car to Nissan, Nissan told me that the keys couldn't be read by their computers and I have to reprogram my control unit and keys and they have to order a part in. That's the first step, if it works great, if it doesn't, then I have to do something else with the computer which is going to cost me even more. Diagnostic at Nissan cost me about $125.99 without taxes. That's 3x more than what I paid at Downtown Car Care. Downtown Car Care are my guys. read more
