Pretty average diner spot but the decor inside is nice- very retro. The hostess/seating arrangement is a bit confusing when you first walk in. This place has speedy service though! Order was out after ten minutes of placing, which was great! The food was pretty average and somewhat bland so that's why it's getting 3 stars from me. Additionally, they don't have a real brunch menu and they don't offer classic breakfast alcohol like mimosas or Bloody Mary's, that was a real let-down. Not good. Too pricey for the quality. Food is dried up. You order an orange juice that they get for less than a 1$. Jack up the price to $4. You can get the same bottle at the gas station for under 2$. I can understand if you make your own but it's the same glass bottle u get at the local convenient store. Have only been here for breakfast/lunch. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular - a decent, neighborhood-feel kind of place to grab a quick bite. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I wouldn't dismiss it altogether. I agree with the other reviews about the presentation - no thought put into it whatsoever (my breakfast burrito was literally just a neatly wrapped burrito in the center of a large white plate, like no lettuce or dipping sauces or fresh tomato or anything to make it look less boring). And prices are pretty overpriced for the area and the quality of the food. I've never had anything bad here, per se, but nothing has wowed me either, especially for the price. The breakfast burrito was tasty, but there wasn't enough of the flavorful chorizo. Pancakes look large and flat but not all that fluffy. My dad favors the veggie omelette. Their homefries are really crunchy and delicious, I'll give them that. Again, I've been here infrequently over the course of a couple of years and I'm not dying to get back since nothing was all that memorable. But if you're in the area, give it a gander. P.S. - The noise level here is outrageous. The acoustics of the odd, angular glass ceiling make it nearly impossible to chat with your table unless you're yelling at each other. Well, I may be the only person to give this place a solid rating but I honestly have had great experiences here so far. I hesitated on rating for awhile since I go so frequently (the location for me is key). I ate in and took out and have had speedy, satisfactory service on each occassion. At this point, I'm recognized by the friendly counter girl and addressed on a first name basis. This is primarily a local deli style lunch spot so there really is no claim to gourmet or "out of the ordinary" dishes. Eat in: Eating in here is definitely the way to go if you can spare the time. Your side portions are much larger and the overall dining experience is best in their solarium style seating-- only downfall is limited seating and eating outside. Their sidewalk seating should be avoided unless you're ready to brown bag it especially since they don't actually have wait staff available for you. Take out: Take a menu and CALL AHEAD! The take out is not bad either if you're in a hurry but you will definitely receive a smaller side (about the size of a plastic salad dressing cup). Breakfast sandwiches are also up to par and ready within in 2 minutes tops. Overall, I would like to see more variety of daily lunch specials and consistent, ample side portions. People CONSTANTLY complain about the 2 noodles of pasta or 2 cubes of potato in their salads. read more

Downtown Deli has been a favorite of mine for years. I first fell in love with their sweet cream pancakes (which are definitely the best pancakes I've ever eaten) but everything else on their menu is great too. I love that they have a full custom salad option. You get a piece of paper to fill out and just check off what you want which makes it really easy. It says closed on Yelp but my daughter and I were walking around town after a tour at the University of Scranton and it is open. Maybe new owners... Anyway, we were greeted warmly and shown to our table quickly. A few great sounding specials on the board caught our eye so we ordered two to split. Portions were great and the sandwiches were fantastic! My side of Mac salad was a nice touch. Service was great too! Have gone here quite a few times for lunch since I work in the area. They have progressively gotten worse in their short time on the block. They have raised prices and decreased portion sizes and have begun using substandard ingredients. A turkey panini now is almost 9 bucks and it's not much bigger than the palm of my hand. No extras either. A Chicken Cutlet Salad used to be $7 with romaine lettuce, now is $9, smaller and has iceberg lettuce. Also, their employees have very bad attitudes. I once witnessed the person ringing me up for a to-go order curse and freak out because she had to answer the phone and tell a potential customer what the soup of the day was. This wasn't just a bad day, I've seen this person on many occasions treat the customers rudely. And she isn't the only one. I don't mind paying good money for good food. But I won't spend money in a place where the food quality doesn't match the prices and I especially won't eat someplace where the employees treat their customers like crap. read more

We went to downtown deli for brunch on a Sunday. A little pricy for what it is but the food was good and staff was nice. French toast is to die for. They served the french toast with mascarpone and fresh strawberries. Make sure you get the French toast if it's on the menu. It was their special so I'm assuming it comes and goes. We visited around 12:30 for a late brunch. Breakfast is served all day as they close at 4. Both of us had an omelet. Omelet was not good. Too thin and not hot at all. My shredded mozzarella cheese was not even melted. Breakfast potatoes were good. I got the pork roll, which was sliced thin and very greasy. It would have been better had it not been sliced thin and cooked a little more with less grease pooling in the center. The coffee was very good and in a mug, which is always nice. The place was busy but not backed up. We were never offered a second cup of coffee until we were almost done our meal. There is only one shared bathroom. Only one for a large place. Also, there was a grate in the floor right at the base of the toilet that was recessed almost 2 inches below the floor. Easy for someone to catch a heel. read more

I stopped in this deli on my way to the bus station to get a quick to-go breakfast. It's super nice inside and everyone is friendly. I was on my back to NYC (where I live now) but I grew up in scranton. Its so nice to see such a nice place right in downtown scranton. You can tell whoever owns it, outs alot of love into the place. Regarding the food, they did mess up my order ( which may have been my fault but I honestly don't remember) However, the quickly fixed it and I was on my way in no time. i think it would be best to order off the menu and not try and make any special order like I did. Stopped in for brunch and had amazing sweet cream pancakes. They were so good you could eat them without the syrup; there were three in an order, and I couldn't finish them they were so big. I also had side of bacon that was perfectly cooked. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I felt the servers weren't very attentive until they wanted us to leave; they didn't check in us until they came over to offer a box for leftovers. read more

My experience this morning. I walked in and placed my name on the waitlist. I was seated at the 2 seater table in the far corner back, no issue at all. I placed my order, black coffee and a veggie egg white omelette, sub cheddar for American cheese, no toast. My food arrived, it wasn't egg whites, I didn't complain or bring it to anyone's attention, they were super busy and I understood. I finished my food, stacked it neatly on the table so that the plate and silverware could easily be picked up. 10 mins later the waitress asked if she could bring my check, I said yes. I got out 4-$1's and placed and displayed them under the pepper shaker for the tip and placed a $20 bill on the edge of the table for when the bill came. About 10-15 mins later a lady appeared (maybe an owner, not sure). She approached my table and said, "can I get you anything else because I need this table to get it set for someone else." I was embarrassed, 2 tables looking and listening. I said and pointed to the money sitting on the table, "I'm still waiting on my check." She said okay and I handed her the $20 sitting on the table edge she disappeared. I got up, one table looked at me and mouthed "wow" and I walked to the register area to wait on change. That was unnecessary and embarrassing. I wasn't taking up your table intentionally, I was waiting on a check with my tip and $20 sitting on the table for a while. That just wasn't handled properly at all. How about an "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were waiting on us." That was completely rude and not okay. Salty overpriced food that underwhelms each time I go there. Just paid over $6 for a soup and thought what am I thinking going to this place? It was a salt bomb and I could have just done a $2 can of soup. On top of the food that costs a fortune, the staff act as if it's a major inconvenience to wait on you. If you have deep pockets and don't care about places with no customer service, this is the place for you. If you are someone who is looking for people happy attentive staff serving better than Campbells, walk up to the center square of Scranton for better choices. Not sure what to make of this place. The space is attractive, bright and clean and the staff is friendly. With that said, the sandwiches - the core product of any deli - are just okay. Extra extra points for using Boar's Head, but the sandwiches just aren't prepared very well. The sides (potato salad, pasta salad, coleslaw) are pretty good, but you get a teaspoon full in a tiny plastic cup - and the pickle is not included. Let me be clear food is really good. I have eaten lunch here once a week since they opened and left happy every time. Went to breakfast today and ordered a nice breakfast and ordered a large orange juice. Bill comes and this large orange juice was $5.75. I laughed and said to the waitress that there is something wrong with their computer pricing on this OJ. She said nope that's our price. This business not only lost my occasional breakfast business but has now lost a weekly lunch crowd of 5-8 people by overcharging for something so silly. Got owner later in day and said that they were charging that price over winter but meant to lower price to $3.75. This is still crazy to me. Love breakfast from the Downtown Deli. For a while they were getting my orders close but not quite right but they have it now! Love that the owner is from Jersey and knows what a Pork Roll/Taylor Ham Sandwich is!!! Missed them! I get my Pork Roll and Cheese on a toasted Everything Bagel and it is awesome! Lunches there are great too! On top of that the waitstaff and cashiers are so friendly!!! I love seeing the fresh flowers on the counter in the morning when I stop in!
