I have always received great customer service at this store, coupled with always being able to get exactly what I need. I have to give recognition to Zachary E, this young man provided me with excellent help finding a part to repair my hose. I had bought a part previously, without asking for help and it did not work. Zachary listened to what I needed and spent time making sure it would work on my sample piece of hose. I love having this Ace nearby, very handy. Just one thing that bothered me today, the young gentleman cashier, (tall, short beard, glasses). I couldn't tell if he was blatantly trying to be rude, or if it's a personality defect. But please, don't be unprofessional (and try to act like you're on set of Stranger Things) when greeting customers and saying goodbye, at check-out. It's off-putting. You know, I much prefer to support a small local store versus driving out to a big box but... it's hard when the staff here aren't consistently helpful and the items aren't available. I'm planning for a stepping stone mosaic and need thin set mortar. Ah, I can here and was told the item is at the annex down the street. I passed as they were getting ready to close. I went to the big box days later and they only had a gallon bucket which is more than I need. On Sunday I went over to the annex only to find it locked. The hours posted were there and the door shut. Ugh! I knocked and saw an employee coming out the side gate. She said that because they are short staffed, they cannot leave someone at the Annex all day. How sad. Well, they only had big bags of mortar. Finally found it at WC Ace. My advice... please have you cashier's greet folks when they enter and then to ask the customer what help they need. Be proactive. Paid $18.89 per 24 ounce bottle for Maguire's Ultimate Wheel Cleaner, twice as much as advertised elsewhere and ~$5 per bottle more than advertised today by Ace online. Got a bag of Ace brand birdseed months ago. Put it in a corner; didn't need it until today. To my horror the entire bag was ruined: moldy or rotten somehow. Looks like the problem was the bag was left outside at the store and the inside somehow got damp. Called to see if they would consider replacing it; no longer had the receipt. They could not have been nicer or more accommodating. NO PROBLEM! They replaced the ruined bag immediately. Excellent service. read more

Ace tried to charge me more for some screws than the price tag said I spoke to the supervisor David and I asked them if you could honor the price tag that they had on the shelf. This isn't the Ace hardware you're looking for. If you want to buy something quickly from helpful staff, go two miles down the road to Walnut Creek Ace. But, if you like to feel belittled by a bunch of old men who wander the store saying things like, "Found what you need?" then walk away while you ask for help, or "You know you need a blow torch for that?" when you're picking up copper plumbing parts. Like, yeah, duh, that's why I'm here in the copper fittings aisle. There's a way to helpfully guide a customer if you think they're picking out the wrong parts, and then there's everything they do and say at this store. I've had a birdseed vault for at least a couple of years. I have one squirrel who has made it his life mission to break into it this summer and he was successful. I needed a steel bucket ASAP. While I thought my war was with the squirrel, Ace Hardware in Lafayette pulled a "hold my beer" move. I see a 10gal galvanized steel can on the Ace webpage for $29.99 and head on down there to pick it up. I get home and realized they charged me $29.99 for the can and an additional $7.99 for the lid when it, and the can says it's included. I call and David immediately tells me that "yeah we charge for the lid separately if you purchase inside the store" I explain that doesn't make sense that the sticker on the can indicated with locking lid and not having a lid defeats the purpose of the can and he continued to argue with me that the pricing is different online even if you pick it up at the store. Charging for the lid is like charging extra for the bun on a burger. So I said "you won't honor the price?" and he said "no". so I informed him that was bad customer service and he replied it was an "ACE thing". So I said "I guess then you are telling me that I need to order it online, drive down and pick it up and return the other one." Then he said "if that's what you want to do", I said, "well, yeah, we're talking a $9 dollar difference." I called the Walnut Creek store on Mt. Diablo and was given the option to have a text chat which is great since it documented the conversation. According to WC, the can does in fact come with the lid as advertised and Lafayette was wrong to charge me for the lid. I went to return the bucket last night giving them one last chance to make it right. The friendly cashier said "didn't work for you?" and I said "funny story" and proceeded to explain the situation. His demeanor changed, not drastically, but definitely defensive even when I tried to joke around about it being how absurd the whole situation was. Well, they would rather take the bucket back and gave me my $41.30. So I log on and not only did I purchase the bucket again, I happen to have a $5 off coupon in my account that I was able to apply. This was EXTREMELY gratifying. So David, rather than just honoring the online price I ended up getting the item for $27.18 instead of $32.61 for the honored price or $41.30 walk-in. I purchased it at your store for the gratification of taking it from your inventory at the advertised price but this will be the last time I walk through those doors. The squirrel seems a lot more reasonable at this point and I will now take the extra time to go to WC or Mtz as the customer fleecing and rude service is not worth my money. read more

HORRIBLE management customer service!!! I was in there 2 days ago and found this Yeti cooler I came to buy. This was the only one left, and it had a missing shoulder strap. I opened the yeti and inside was this handwritten note saying missing shoulder strap and that they would sell it at a discount. Howie, the store manager was called up and said "No we can not honor this, we don't ever sell anything on discount. This should have been in the back and we could just order the strap ourselves to fix it." I almost felt like he was accusing me of taking the strap off and writing that paper myself! The cashier mentioned that Dave, the General Manager, had his initials on the paper. Howie then said well until we can talk to Dave, we can't honor this. I asked if they could give Dave a quick phone call since it's tough for me to get out to the store with my young kids, he quickly said "No. I know for a fact he won't answer, he is going out to dinner with his wife" So he ended up having me write my name and phone number down for Dave to call me the next morning. Well, Dave never called. I ended up getting the cooler from Sports Basement instead with a coupon. I will never step foot in here again. Howie was super rude and even the other younger employees seemed unhappy working here. read more

This store has probably the worst customer service I have long seen. I was getting a few things.. and lately I have noticed that the young people working the cash register are extremely low on customer service. I don't if the store is having trouble hiring people and therefore take whoever walks through the door. Today I tried to say hello to the young guy working the cash register... twice I smiled and said hello.. he just shook his head and and didn't even bother looking up or anything. We live in town, and after multiple bad experiences of late, I'm writing a review. They have new owners, and they are terrible in terms of customer service. I have had experiences with them taking a two piece item and splitting it into two different sku's and selling them for above list, have had the manager say he won't take back defective lightbulbs even though he admitted they were bad, and the last straw being that the store does not honor their own pricing for online goods. I literally could add the item to my cart and have it picked up at the store, but if I went to the store they would not honor the price...even after showing the price on their website to the manager. So I'm done with this store, and would suggest that customers be very careful in their dealings as the new owners imo offer horrific customer service. I went to another local Ace today and they had the same item on sale with a big sale sign that Lafayette would not honor the sale price of. Buyer beware. read more

Convenient location but terrible service. The entire culture of this store is negative. They have no desire to serve you and treat you like you're stupid if ask a question. Sometimes, their staff doesn't know the answer and rather than ask someone else, they make up an answer. I have wasted too much money at this store buying things I don't need based on their erroneous advice. No one here is friendly. The Ace in Moraga is so friendly and helpful but the location isn't convenient. Still, I think it is worth the drive to be treated well, provided with good advice and where you end up purchasing what you need. The Lafayette Ace should take lessons from Moraga. They are supposed to be there for the customers rather than act inconvenienced. Really disappointing. read more

An online order for pvc plumbing parts was totally botched by whoever picked the order. Things like 1-1/4" coupling instead of 1-1/2", as ordered, etc. I had 2 orders and they botched both of them, halting both projects. Since they offer free home delivery, I called to see if they could bring the correct parts to my home to replace the incorrect ones they put in my order. Guy on the phone asked the manager, who said it would be $75 to deliver the correct parts! I've been a loyal customer for 22 years, but nevermore! read more

What I need garden bark was stacked outside store but no one who worked there seemed interested in helping me during the 10 minutes I was outside and TRYING to get anyone's attention. Went here to pick up a few things my local ACE didn't have in stock, asked a simple question of a few guys standing around a counter and one employee gave a simple, helpful answer. A second employee who was standing nearby made an additional condescending comment that was really unnecessary and completely unhelpful (seemed to be intentionally rude and I hadn't directly asked him for anything). I stopped in at this Ace location while at the car wash to see about picking up some "play sand" for a new fish tank I am building up. I looked around for a bit and someone offered to help me. I explained the project briefly, and asked to see the sand. I was informed that the sand was kept in an "annex" across the street from the store. The associate got snippy on their in-store radio, "i have to take a customer to look at sand" as if I was a total idiot. I had explained simply that I don't know the first thing about the sand and what color it is (maybe there are different types and colors, I sure didn't know and STILL don't...) There is never an excuse for making someone who wants to buy something from you feel like an idiot. I thanked him for his time and told him I didn't want to inconvenience him any further. I will go to Orchard in Moraga and skip this mistake next time I find myself in Lafayette. 1 bonus star for a pretty good selection of other items for such a small store. I purchased a part for a gopher hawk there a few days ago. The service was excellent. I had ordered it online only 2 days earlier. I was given the option of home delivery or pick up. When I went to pick it up, the man went right to it. He asked me about my experience w the product. Told him we caught 12 gophers since Jan. at the urban farm where I volunteer. We exchanged information, both of us learning something. I have been to this store several times as it has a good selection of canning supplies. The staff is always professional, pleasant and informative, usually asking my opinion about the product. Will be there many times to come. read more

My wife went into this ACE Hardware store and made a small purchase. While exiting the store, she was struck by the electric door on the right as you leave the store causing her intense pain on the right side of her body. It turned out that the door that struck her was an entrance door which when open, and exiting the store, there is no way of knowing it is an entrance door. I went into the store and spoke to the manager regarding my wife's injury. The manager told me that it was the building's fault and that the door did not belong to Ace Hardware. When I asked him if Ace has a responsibility to ensure the safety of its customers, he told me that it was not their responsibility and that the problem starts with who owns the building. Again, I asked him if Ace Hardware is responsible for the safety of its customers and he told me no. The entrance and exit doors are a safety concern and when a door is open you have no idea if you're going out the right door. The doors at this location are backwards and not consistent with other business doors. No one should suffer an injury due to a known safety issue. As I left the store, another customer was struck by the same door. This manager has no business managing a store if he cannot ensure the safety of their customers. There was no apology from the manager regarding the incident as he blamed the building. When a customer reports that they were injured, you would think they would ask if the party is alright and then take notes about the party who was injured. Be careful entering this place as you or your child can be severely injured. The doors are a lawsuit waiting to happen. I will be contacting the owner on Monday. read more

I am super impressed by the staff in this local hardware store -it looks not so big from the outside but it is a real tardis with a vast choice and an array of products from paints to electrical items. It is tidy, up to date - none of that type where you have dusty items here and there. The members of staff are knowledgeable, approachable and efficient. I placed an online order left work early so I can pickup my order and go home and finish the work I am doing. I waited for an unacceptable while to get attention, then I was told one of the items out of the two I ordered is out of stock. Out of stock item is now scheduled to come 3 day later which doesn't work for me. They told me I can pickup the other item from the annex on the other side of a car wash across the street and make me sign my receipt and send me there. After driving around and making a u turn, I have arrived to the annex and there was no one and the place is locked up. Went around the building. Not a single person. On the way to my car the person who send me there come up to me and said. Oh, I forgot to tell you we don't give partial orders. I placed this order before noon and went to pick up 5 hours later. Planing on a curbside pickup. So there is a warning on Yelp, due to COVID-19 we should be easy on the reviews. I guess due to COVID-19, we as the customer, be understanding for their convenience. They could have let me know, so I can change plans and not drive there in commute traffic, don't give me the runaround. If they want people to go there, set rules for your customers convenience. So I give them one star. You guys be the judge of it. I am definitely done with that particular store. read more

He said no worries come back a we will exchange it for you. I come back in a hour told the manager hey I need a bigger size. And he goes back on his word and says sorry can't take it and walks away for someone else to take care if me. I start to go back and forward with this repetitive for the manager to come back and said In these words "look lady were not taking it back so buy the size you need or get out" so I fucking left and went to the one in orinda and explained them the situation and they kindly exchanged it Long story short don't come to this ace unless you know what you need.
