I needed a paint sample matched and asked Susan to match it. She made my paint and It wasn't even close. I brought it back for her to fix and she had attitude and told me this is the last time I'm going to try and fix the paint. She added some color and again it wasn't even close. I threw the paint away. I took my sample to OSH and they matched it perfectly. Don't recommend ACE! read more

My boyfriend and I stop by here at least a couple times a month because it's close to his place, we both like supporting local businesses, and the staff is always very friendly and helpful. When it came time to upgrade his grill, my boyfriend wanted to patronize the Moraga Ace. He had spent a couple of weeks researching grills, and we went to several stores to look at their inventory. In the end, the grill we chose was not in stock at Moraga Ace, so the owner, Bill, worked with us directly to order the grill. He and his staff assembled and delivered the grill, then Bill gave us several tips on where to put the grill in the backyard and made sure that we were both comfortable connecting and disconnecting the propane tank, turning the propane on, and lighting the various burners. Then he gave us a few tips about how to grill different types of meats and veggies! He even threw in a complimentary long-handled grill brush. Later that weekend, we dropped in for some non-grill-related items and Bill made sure to greet us and ask how the new grill was working out for us. :) read more

So my Son, who owns his own pools service stopped in to buy a small fuse and one of the young store employees was helping him select the correct one, when he was summoned by the old cashier (who turns out to be the owner) "Bill" told the worker that the customer with him was more important than helping my son saying. That he didn't need his help at all. The next thing you know "Bill" is yelling at the kid to get his ass up front and told my son to leave his store or else he will call the police! So here we go some old guy bossing young people around because he thinks he is more important that giving his premium customers a good experience. Maybe it's time to retire or learn how to treat all customers and employees no matter what age, color, race, sex or whatever hang up you have, WITH RESPECT! Yes, sometimes the lure of OSH inventory does ashamedly draw me in, but I'm quickly reminded by several uninterested, sometimes angry staff there that Bill's store is just across the street, and along with Across The Way takes care of 70-80% of everything - they will also order you anything if you are not in a rush. Love this hardware store! Met Bill, the owner, the first time I went in. He was friendly and kind as are all of their employees. From the moment you walk in. the entire staff is friendly, welcoming and helpful. If one person doesn't have an answer, they ask another who does. If you're looking for something specific, they tell you exactly what aisle to go to and often walk there with you show you. If you go in frequently, the staff acknowledges how many weeks in a row they have had the pleasure of having you stop in. I think this store is worth going out of my way to go to. Bill Snider (the owner) had me before I walked into Moraga Hardware, with a Iowa Hawkeye (my alma mater) flag waving high and proud at the entrance. Then I found out that he's from Spencer Iowa (near where I grew up in NW Iowa) and a place I still return each Summer for Jesse Bogenrief's hand crafted glass. On top of that, he also graduated from the University of Iowa (as did my Dad, Uncle, and Brother), his daughter goes there, and their family once had a cabin on Lake Okoboji (near ours on Great Spirit Lake). As they say, coincidence is G-d's way of staying anonymous. I was actually at Moraga Hardware, as I was in the neighborhood and there were a few items that I needed for around the house. This is the type of neighborhood hardware store that I was raised on: family atmosphere, good non-box store selection and ambiance, and great service. On the down side, every time I go in and the owner (Bill) is there, he's berating one the nice kids that work there, in a really nasty/humiliating way. A+ customer service! I went in to only buy a plunger, and the owner and his son were so helpful in providing support in a non-intrusive way. They recommended which plunger in the best for a sink versus a toilet, and different helpful tips for addressing clogs yourself. I just moved to the area, and the amount of advice that I had received for the numerous home projects that have popped up has been so valuable, as you only get so much information from google - and sometimes you need that people interaction! I look forward to working with the staff on my other home projects! read more

My husband and I just had a very bad experience with Moraga ACE Hardware. We have been patronizing this store for many years. We purchased an ACE product in February of this year. When we used it for the first time we found the product to be defective. We took the product back to the store as the warranty specifies and the female cashier on duty said it had been more than one month since the purchase and any warranty issue needs to go to Corporate. The ACE warranty clearly states and I quote, "The ACE Promise, If this ACE product, when used for its intended purpose, fails to give you complete satisfaction, return the item to the ACE Hardware store where purchased for free replacement of the same or similar item." That's exactly what we did. We had to do this in two trips because the owner of the store was not present at the time of the first attempt. So, we had to go back the next day. On the 2nd trip to the store, we met with the owner and tried to explain the situation and get a replacement of the product. The owner did not wish to communicate calmy and resolve the issue. He became very argumentative and started to accuse us of damaging the product. We tried to reason with him that we don't know who is responsible for the defect. Then he said "are you trying to tell me my business?" He turned a simple exchange of a product into a shouting match. Finally, we were given a similar product for replacement. The owner rudely told us to get of the store. He then told the female cashier not to let us in the store again. After our horrific experience with this ACE Hardware, we are not planning patronizing this store anymore. This is the worst experience of all the ACE stores I ever shopped at. Historically, in the past we had patronized this store and received less than welcoming experience. The reason we kept going back to the store despite the owner's bad attitude is that we feel it's important to support our local businesses. I would hope that in the future should anyone experiencing this type of customer service express their opinion without any fear of reprisal, so everyone will be treated equally especially in our local community. We don't take pleasure in this type of review. We always want to say we have the best customer experience. read more

Recommended several products for my sons Cub Scout pinewood derby race that were absolute junk, and not at all fit for the job! (One item, a dry non-graphite lubricant, I saw later one online reviewer say was "to be avoided at all costs"). What they said at the time was "this is what everybody uses." Well, that's interesting because nobody at our race used it. Look, big box stores and online merchants are cheaper and almost as easy to shop from. So if I go into a small, local hardware store at all, it's because I want good advice. If that advice isn't trustworthy, if its "buyer beware", then I might as well go across the street to OSH and save some money. read more
