I had a tough time deciding whether I should give three or four stars, but I'm in a great mood (sex) and I'm feeling generous. I've been going to the Flake for about nine years now, and it is the best dollar for value breakfast on the island (fuck Black Eyed Susan's/Nantucket Inn). And I have been getting the exact same meal every time I have been. 2 Eggs, over-easy, corn beef hash, wheat toast, 3 cups of coffee, ice water, 1 sugar donut. $13 dollars with tax and tip. The thing about the Flake is that on one side can be high-powered CEO's and lawyers and the other side could be construction workers and plumbers. It's a place for everyone. If you can find a better place to get doughnuts, please private message me, because I won't believe it until I see it. People line up outside for when they open at 6am to get them. Now, don't freak out, this isn't NYC where people wait 30 minutes - you will wait a few at most and be more then content that you did. The chocolate is the go to choice. My recommendation for you if you have never had, just order a dozen at a whopping $8 (is anything cheaper on the island - doubtful) and you will be so damn happy. Alternatively, you can scale back only to realize your mistake later on. Not to worry, you can go back again tomorrow and get more. Important to know - they NEED to be consumed the day of purchase. This is the closest thing on the island that resembles a diner. To be honest, its more like a middle school cafeteria or a Perkins (lots of old people). Its definitely the cheapest place to eat on the island that I've seen. In fact, its probably cheaper than Juice Bar, the fancy ice cream parlor, that everyone loves. Now that's ridiculous. I ordered the Nantucket Omelet which includes spinach, feta, and tomatoes (sounds more Greek to me...). It came with choice of toast or a donut. Since Dflake is "known" for their donuts, I had to try one, but it wasn't anything great. Food was ok. Standard scrambled eggs, my sausage had clearly been in a steamer for WAY too long, dehydrated and could barely cut it. My boyfriends sandwich was ok, typical pizza shop roast beef. Service was good, very sweet attentive waitress. You get what you pay for really, the doughnuts are the specialty here, and quite a treat. OH.MY.GOD. is all I can say!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Been coming here for years and every time I go I love it more and more!! It has THE BEST breakfast on the island. Hands down. They make their donuts from scratch, fresh. The are soft and chewy and soooooooooo gooooooooood!! They come in flavors: plain, sugar and chocolate. And the sugar donuts are sprinkled in granulated sugar, not that confectioner stuff D&D puts on their sugar donuts. They are very cheap for what you are getting and you usually by at least a dozen of them and eat half of the box in the car ride home. They are light so it makes it really hard to not pound them all down!! You can either go to the pick up section, and bypass the chaos of the sit down section or you can go and sit for breakfast. This place opens at 6am and doesn't take reservations. And like I said, because its the BEST breakfast on the island (one of the top breakfast's I've ever had actually) the place gets PACKED!! If you don't get there before 8am you WILL be waiting an hour. The place is small so get there early. Oh and they WONT seat you unless your whole party is there and ready to go. So beware of that too :) My favorite breakfast dishes here are: the cinnabun, blueberry pancakes and any of the omelets. Their coffee is pretty good here and and most of the breakfast dishes come with a choice of side of fresh baked muffin, donuts or toast. SKIP THE TOAST!! Their donuts and muffins are awesome!! THIS IS A CASH ONLY PLACE! They do not accept checks or credit cards. Their is a supermarket across the street from this place with a Bank of America ATM. Price... amazing. For 4 people for breakfast which included coffees for everyone, full breakfasts with sides came out to $43 bucks!!! Where are you going to get that??? You can't even get that at IHOP!! And the place was empty and we had a 20 month old... Kind of rediculous Ordered the blueberry pancakes with blueberry syrup for myself and a short stack for my son.. They do offer a freshly made donut as one of the sides to most choices and they were good. The crowd had a local vibe which may reflect the fact that we were there in the "off" season. Huge fan of Downyflake! Got off the ferry at 9am and drove straight there for an amazing breakfast. Local, diner feel to it. Quick and happy service. I got the special roast turkey hash with a side of two over easy eggs. Amazing. Like eating turkey stew but for breakfast. Obviously got the sugar coated doughnuts and blueberry muffins. I am so excited that I found a breakfast spot in Nantucket that I like. I have not had such great luck at the other diner-ish type establishments in town - not to mention the waits. We walked to Downyflake one morning - yes it is a bit of a hike from town but we were on vacation, who is keeping track of time? I would recommend a bike, but being a bit preggo and unbalanced I figured I better walk. We were greeted and sat right away. The place was full of other tourist and diners - always a good sign. Service was efficient and spot on with orders. We started with what else... the donuts. We split the sugar and chocolate ones and they were just as delicious as promised. Warm, fresh, dense - everything a donut should be. For our entrees the husband had the cinnamon bun French toast - oh la la, I had a little bite and it was great! I had a ham and cheese omelet - also wonderful - large portions, oozing with cheese, with a side of toast and home fries. I can't wait to come back here again! read more

What is it about Nantucket that all the 'donuts' are teeny-tiny. This place is a dive. Supposedly you come here for the donuts but they only have like 3 flavors and they're tiny and mediocre. However, I don't think you'll find a cheaper place for breakfast on the island. I'd equate it to a dive diner where the elderly locals with nothing better to do than kvetch about the world hang out. Most dishes though are between $5-$8 though. NOTE: Island Kitchen offers their own freshly made teeny donuts too. It's a better choice though their breakfast is pretty average too. read more

I lived on Nantucket and used to dine at the Downyflake for breakfast quite regular, the food is just good food, great price, the service is exceptional and you know when a restaurant is good by always waiting for a table. Downyflake was not just breakfast. I don't often enjoy dining alone but two workers specifically made this an experience rather than just getting breakfast. The waiter Manny was hilarious and kind, and I believe her name was Rosie, was sharing stories, jokes, and anything else to put a smile on my face. They make you feel welcome and like you have been eating there for 20 years. The breakfast sandwich was amazing along with my chocolate chip pancakes. I came here because all my friends said the doughnuts were good. I will adamantly say they were wrong, the doughnuts were AMAZING. The doughnuts are soft and fluffy yet substantial as you would expect from a cake doughnut. But what takes the cake... err... doughnut is that they come warm. And the chocolate dipped doughnuts are freshly dipped when you order leaving them with a slowly dripping coat of chocolate. The doughnuts are best eaten either at the restaurant or immediately after ordering from the take-out counter, unless you live next door to Downyflake, in which case, you can eat them at home. But if you live next to Downyflake, you probably don't need to read reviews about it as you've undoubtedly been to it. Now, on to the the rest of the menu. Downyflake as a diner is fairly typical when it comes to diner fare, albeit with some local flavor. Our group ordered a smattering of typical breakfast dishes and while the fare is good and the prices are reasonable for Nantucket. The food is not amazing, unlike the doughnuts. I felt much of the food, especially the corned beef hash was something you'd find in a can at the grocery store. Not that it is in it self a bad thing. Just not spectacular. In all the doughnuts are worth five stars on their own, but the rest of the restaurant is about three stars. But if you find yourself on Nantucket, I do suggest you go, but make sure to leave plenty of room for doughnuts. read more

I've never actually been to Downyflake physically, but I have tried their donuts. Maaaan are they something! I'm usually not a huge fan of certain donuts because if they are to "cakey" and dry, I quickly get tired of them. The donuts were a bit smaller than normal donuts; the perfect size. They were so moist and delicious, it almost doesn't matter what type of topping you get on them. I had two chocolate donuts, while my friend had the sugar donut. If I ever come back to Nantucket, I will definitely be getting some donuts from Downyflake. read more

This place is just like any other great breakfast place for locals. As an outsider I saw a few people come in and decline menus. They already new the menu and the specials. I had biscuits and gravy, which might have been simple, but they were great. I think they came out within 2 minutes of me ordering. They also have tons of homemade baked goods.
