The fish and chips and the coconut shrimp got a thumbs-up, as did the shrimp po' boy. This place has a solid menu and I had such a difficult time choosing what to order. I ended up getting the fish tacos, which are listed as an appetizer but enough for a lighter dinner. The buttermilk fried chicken sandwich was delicious, the whipped feta and mint cucumbers adding a unique flavor profile- definitetly the best of what we got. Kind of dreaming about it now. The steak on the Philly cheesesteak was good, but the bread was a basic sub and made the sandwich kind of boring. The Brie and prosciutto grilled cheese was an interesting concept on paper but the baguette was tiny and the apple had an odd flavor. Otherwise, the wait staff was attentive and food was brought out quick, and the live band provided a welcoming and cozy atmosphere. We came here twice during our 3 night stay in Nantucket. The first night wa really good the second time WOW! On the first visit we ordered a fish dip which was thick and full Of fish. For am entre we got a Lobster roll wick was great and full of lobster. All that is a 3 to 3 1/2. On visit number 2 we got the mussels or an appetizer. Those were amazing. They were fresh and is wonderful Sauce that I had as SBA soup (no joke). For an entre we got the halibut . That may be the best fish entre I have eaten in years. I get it. There's so many tasty looking restaurants scattered all around Nantucket that its difficult to choose where to eat. So we just did a random dice roll and ended up here. Our party of 6 (+2 kids) found a nice outdoor seating where we ordered a variety of tasty meals. The summer salad with shrimp, avocado, citrus and creamy strawberry dressing was a huge hit. The cheese steak was tender and melty between two soft breads. The chicken sandwich on sourdough was a bit much with the salt & spice, but their side fries were just right. The clam chowder was pretty good, as well as the bluefish tartar paired with crisp sesame crackers. The waiter was fantastic. We have been coming to the island for 40 years. Always love coming to Rose and Crown. Service was wonderful this last year. I believe Rose has the best clam chowder on the island. Always enjoy the chowder. This trip got the fish sandwich and the cracked chicken. Both were delicious. I definitely recommend if you like ranch dressing to get their home made ranch. When it comes to food, steer clear of the salads and stick to the comfort food favorites. The burgers, French fries and wings do the job. Whatever you do, no salads. Salad Vent: the bowls remind me of the plastic bowls you grabbed in high school to fill with a mediocre salad bar. The salads (which ranged from $15 to $20, an extra $7 for protein) have always been so disappointing. They really fluff up the lingo on the menu to make them sound sophisticated, but they are anything but. Again, maybe my mistake for trying a salad here for the second time (had the Mediterranean once too), but they are simply not the move. Drinks are great and waiters are friendly. read more

I'm shocked at the low ratings for The Rose and Crown. Other than the divey atmosphere, it is a great place to gather for food and drinks. Reading over the most recent reviews, it seems like the low ratings are largely from out-of-state visitors who failed to understand the economy of Nantucket. It is a tourist economy and is a beautiful, quaint but pricey island to getaway to - very much similar to the experience you get when you stay at a resort. Getting to the food, I came with The Boy and his family and we found the food to truly hit the spot after a long day of bus and ferry rides. The Rose and Crown serves upscale bar food with bites that seem to offer a fusion twist from other ethnicities and cultures. To start, DEVILED EGG TOAST - words cannot express how delicious this bit is. The creamy deviled egg spread with bacon and scallion is delicious and served on more of a biscuit rather than thick toast. This bite was our table's favorite. I wasn't particularly hungry that night so I just ordered the Tomato & Roasted Red Pepper Soup and this was dreamily creamy and the tomato and roasted pepper flavors complement each other well. The Boy had a few Buffalo Chicken Wings and he said they were really good. I didn't get to sample the Sriracha Burger but it was wolfed down pretty quickly. I wish I had time to return another night when I was hungrier because there were a lot of intriguing Asian fusion dishes on the menu like Thai Green Curry Mussels and Seafood Banh Mi.
