I went to DP Auto Service in early June 2014. I chose it over closer shops, because of the good reviews. When I picked up my car, I noticed that objects had been stolen from it. I would not suggest visiting the store--go somewhere without theft. Details below: My car need AC work, and the part had to be ordered. I was leaving town for the weekend, and the shop suggested I just leave the car there. When I returned the following week to pick up the car, the AC was working fine, but objects in my car had been removed. A bunch of the toll change I keep in the dash was gone (maybe $5 of change), as well as small items like a pen. This worried me, and so I looked over the whole car. I found that someone had gone through the objects in the trunk, and removed some tools, specifically the tire iron and screw drivers from my spare kit. It was pretty obvious that they were missing--there were bits of styrofoam in the trunk, and some camping gear I had in the wheel well had been moved. I went back to the store and asked where my tools were. (Sure didn't like the idea of getting a flat and not being able to change it.) The two mechanics I spoke with looked baffled, and after making some phone calls gave me a replacement tire iron. They did not apologize or take responsibility. I asked why someone would have been fooling with the spare tire for an AC job--they had no idea. I would not suggest visiting the shop. read more

Maybe I'm premature in giving DP Auto Service 5 stars, since today was my first visit and I only had an oil change and a brake inspection. However, all signs are really good that these folks are very customer service-oriented, competent, and ethical. They were able to accommodate my request for a pickup time; they charge very reasonable rates; they didn't recommend anything I don't need; and they were courteous and personable. I've been looking for a good service station in northwest DC, and it looks like I may just have found it...and within walking distance of my apartment to boot! read more

DP Auto Service used to be the best car service place in NW DC. Oh how the mighty have fallen... Everyone remembers good ol' Kenny who used to run the place before the gas station became a Shell. David Pham took over for Kenny when he retired and for about a year worked very hard to keep Kenny's loyal customers. I was very satisfied with David's service over the first year. Word of mouth about DP Auto Service quickly got out and now the place has more customers than they can handle. Because of this, their level of customer service has greatly deteriorated. David no longer shows up until 3pm in the afternoons. Pay no attention to the hours they post. Just a month ago David told me to be there at 7:30am on a Tuesday (when they are supposed to open) to pick up my keys. When I arrived, there was no one there. I waited an hour before I eventually just hopped on the bus because I was late for work. Since he has gained the trust of Kenny's former customers, David has also turned into a deceitful crook. I took my Acura in to get an estimate on new brakes and the price David quoted me was $300 MORE than what I was quoted when I went to the DEALER! Unbelievable! Needless to say I will never be giving him my business again. Take your car to Auto Tech Service in Adam's Morgan. Miguel is an honest mechanic who keeps regular hours, not a lazy swindler like David Pham. read more

I've been visiting this place for a while and really trusted these guys until last weekend. My car refused to start. I had it towed to the shop and asked them to check what was wrong. They called me back later to tell me that the distributer needs to be replaced. I was out of cash and planned to not fix it right away as the part is expensive, so I just told them so. The next day I came to get the car key. They told me they must charge me an hour of work because they had to remove everything out and then put everything back so it took them more than an hour. I was ok with paying them for checking but thought it should have not taken them that much work. Hence, I asked if they could charge me half an hour or less. They responded angrily "who are you? you cannot come here and tell us how much to charge you,...." So I paid them and got the key. However, I felt like being robbed. I called another mechanic and asked him to check the car again without telling him anything what happened. This time I stayed to see how he worked on the car. It took him literally LESS THAN 5 MINUTES to make a firm conclusion that the problem was at the distributer. He didn't have to remove any part except unplugging some cables for checking. He also explained me why it cannot be other things like battery and starter. Of course, I didn't remember the details. So there are only 2 possibilities that I could think of: 1. The guys at DP service know nothing about cars. That's why it took them so long and too much work to figure out the problem. 2. They are simply liars and just want to charge you ridiculous price whenever they can. Either ways, I decide not to go back there again. read more

DP Auto is fantastic and David is great! I have used DP for several years for repairs large and small on 3 cars and have never been disappointed. They are honest, quick, reliable, and reasonably priced. If you don't need an expensive repair, they will tell you. If you do need one, their prices are much lower than a dealer or most other shops. They do great work quickly. And they can do major jobs. When my son's Subaru Outback's engine seized up after a Baltimore Jiffy Lube didn't fulliy tighten the drain plug, they replaced it with a good engine from an Outback I found with a beat-up body. The replacement engine worked flawlessly. And I like supporting a small business where the owner and mechanics know you. read more

Got a flat tire in Bethesda in the rain. Found this place on Yelp. I was skeptical at first because the shop is in a gas station. However, I learned quickly not to judge a book by it's cover. Dave, his brother, and the Caribbean guy were the nicest and most honest people I have ever worked with. They fixed my tire and also fixed my broken AC that same day. Dave was quick and didn't take advantage of me just because I was a woman (which has happened in the past). I am new to DC and will now take my car to Dave for all my car needs. These guys are the real deal. Honesty and great service go a long way in my book! read more

Everyone needs a "car guy", and for me, David at DP is that guy. He is very knowledgeable and will give you nothing but honesty. At the very least, give them a call and explain any problem, and you will get a quick answer. He uses modern technology (imagine a computer in an auto shop?!) to look for other instances of your problem and potential recalls/safety histories. On one occasion David did all the research on a particular issue and didn't charge me for it. He didn't feel comfortable performing the required maintenance and recommended the car's manufacturing dealer. I've had mechanics in the past try and do the work without actually knowing-- and costing me $$$ in the process. read more

Short version: Mike helped me loosen some rusty bolts at short notice, and for free! Less short version: I was losing my wits over not being able to loosen the bolts to change my license plate. I found these guys on Google and they were fairly close so I called them up and Mike said I could come right in. Service was quick, super helpful, and everyone was really friendly. Plus, if you ever need to wait, Politics and Prose is right across the street for coffee and snacks! A++ will go to them for actual mechanical needs in the future. read more

I needed my car to be fixed to leave for a long road trip in a matter of days. I pulled up to DP Auto and in 10 minutes, they looked at my car, told me what was wrong and gave a price with everything included. No extra cost at the end. Coolest dudes in town. Took my car for a Pre Purchase Inspection. They were understanding of my time constraints and took care of the inspection right away. They raised the car up and seem to have taken a very thorough look at inside, under and outside the car and gave me a green light on the car. They also charged me a fraction of what other shops were asking for. Would highly recommend them! read more

DP Auto is a godsend. My "check engine" light was on; David initially sent me to the Nissan dealership since my car is pretty new and he figured whatever was wrong would probably still be under warranty. The dealership found that my engine wiring had been chewed up by a rodent (ugghhh), which of course was exempt from the warranty, and wanted to charge $1000 to replace my engine harness. I figured David would give me a better deal so I took the car back to him. He was able to repair the wiring without replacing the entire harness, at a fraction of what the dealership would have charged for unnecessary work. I went to the place based on the generous recommendations I had read... I was disappointed. Not only were the prices higher than market average ($375 for one rear bearing replaced when I can get both replaced at that price elsewhere). $125 for a simple break fluid flush. To top it off, the front office gentleman was not the most friendly person, barely looked at me when speaking to him, giving monosyllabic answers. For simple repairs and routine checks, you're better off going to Midas or Jiffy Lube, at least they have customer care standards. read more

Can I just say how great this place is. It is right by my dry cleaners and I needed an oil change desperately and to have a belt checked. I showed up without notice and Dave and his team got it done for me. This is the exact opposite service I have gotten at the dealers I have tried in the past. Plus fair pricing. Friendly service and pretty fast oil change! Told me the things I should get done when my car hit 100,000 miles and was very helpful.

I first checked into this business to get a good deal on an oil change, but have since gone back 2-3 times for service. Each time, the various options have been reviewed, from least to most expensive (the least expensive not always being the best long-term option, but sometimes making sense depending upon the situation). I have never felt I was being up-charged, nor have I been hassled to do work I did not come in to complete. I have been satisfied with the service (including promptness) and the advice given (sometimes unrelated to what brought me in). The one time there was an issue after a repair (a defect, as I recall) it was fixed quickly and without charge. To sum it up, this seems like an honest and good quality place to get service. :) read more

Highly recommend. My 2004 mazda B2300 pickup truck died on a Sunday night so I got it towed to DBs based on the favorable yelp reviews. The next morning, Dave priced out the alternator fix, kept me in the loop throughout, and when the cost came back higher than I could afford he worked to find a part that I could. Trustworthy and good prices, what more could you ask for? I took my car to a different garage for an estimate on exhaust work. It took them 24 hours to get back to me with an estimate that even I - who knows next to nothing about cars - knew was insane. I called David and explained the problem - he gave me an accurate estimate over the phone and finished the work within a few hours of me dropping off my car. Best of all, he came in a full $300 cheaper than the other guys. And it's worth noting, though sad that I have to, that everyone at the shop treats me with respect, instead of acting like women know nothing and can be swindled out of extra money. read more

I drove in off the street. Emergency. Oil pressure light was on. They were slammed, maybe not thrilled to have another car rolling in. I wouldn't have been. But without hesitation the owner opened the hood, checked the oil, ran the car for a while, replaced the filter (which was bad or misaligned), and sent me on my merry way to NYC. Cost was around 50 bucks. As I drove out, more cars were rolling in. I guess people know a good business in these parts. read more

Amazing! Quick, cheap, and honest. What more could you want in a mechanic?

Woke up yesterday morning. Got in car. Car doesn't start. AGAIN. I knew this day was going to come, my car had needed to be jumped about 4 times within this year and I just did not have the time or energy to replace it yet. Mind you, I have a 2007 Toyota Prius and have not had the battery changed SINCE I purchased it in 2007! So...WOOHOO TOYOTA HYBRIDS!!! Anyways, I called into work and immediately started panicking on social media of my dire situation. One thing leads to another and I am able to be seen within the next hour! I called a towing company (SEND TOWING) which I am writing another great review about.... and they were able to come and jump start my car one last time. I drove to DP and David quickly replaced the battery and I was out the door within 30 minutes!!!! The price was HIGHLY reasonable and he even took my antique dead battery to recycle. EXCELLENT service FAST service GREAT price WILL COME BACK AGAIN!!! read more

The #1 spot I go to whenever I have car problems. Don't go here expecting to be sugarcoated or robbed for your money. The owner David is honest in his work. One thing I like and saw is that he would tell a customer, that they should invest in a new car or something, rather have him fix it. A regular mechanic would milk the cow of that customer, but David is straight up honest on it and wouldn't take advantage of the person. A person who is honest on their work, can only be trusted. Needed my alternator replaced. Knew right away and when I called they quoted me a price which was extremely reasonable and had the car ready that evening. Also had them change my oil and rotate tires and check fluid and brakes. All together spent only $500. In my experience this was very reasonable. Plus David recommended other items but said they could wait. No pressure to spend more. This will be the only place I will take my car now. read more

A potentially bad experience turned into a wonderful one. I went to DP on a whim to get an oil change after many months of neglect. They got me right in and did an awesome job... until my car started smoking and leaking oil the next day. After an investigation, I realized that the oil cap was left off. I called DP right away and they said to bring it in and even ordered a spare oil cap in case they couldn't find my original. When I got there the second time, they stopped attended to my issue immediately, cleaned out under the hood and made sure that I still had enough oil, all free of charge. I will definitely be going back-- an overall great experience that could have potentially been devastating! read more

I've been dealing with an issue with my Cadillac for months now. I've been going to different mechanics who just couldn't fix the issue (a "bandage" was always put on to cover the REAL issue). It's sad because my friends now call me by "Mr. Broken Cadillac" as opposed to my real name - since my car always has issues "when I get it fixed." I was referred to the owner David for my car. He was very friendly and professional! He was able to assess my car and figure out the REAL issue - which was an issue with my radiator. He quoted me a very reasonable price (thank you Google) and fixed my car within DAYS - I was shocked when I woke up to a message saying my car was ready as I was anticipating having to wait for a couple of weeks! My friends kept on joking around about my broken Cadillac. With Halloween approaching, we were talking about throwing a party and setting up a haunted house. One of the suggestions were to use my car as a horror prop labeled as "the horrifying broken Cadillac." The joke's on them - NO MORE broken Cadillac here thanks to David at DP Auto Service! Now that I have my original name restored, I will definitely be back for all of my future auto needs! read more
