Stopped by for gas and saw they have a full mechanic shop on site. I needed a oil change, oil filter and tire rotation. Dropped my suv off at 1030 and was called back at 12 saying it was ready. I was quoted 140, I paid 140! When I take it to the infinity dealership I always get a call back with the bill being wayyyy higher than the quote! Very annoying!! Other services where recommended I get done before winter returns but no rush. John was my contact and he was very professional and kind. Quick service provided. I'm happy! Don't let mamamoos charm rope you in, this place is full of crooks. I went in for a simple oil change and ended up being asked for 4 grand in repairs. Not only that they said my car was unsafe to drive! After speaking with tom(also a crook) I was able to get my car out of there. Shortly after I got my friend with a car lift who has worked on cars his entire life, he determined that none of these "fixes" were necessary. He also mentioned that the piece that was causing a issue which Tom had quoted was only 700(this would assume 1500 dollars of labor it's a car fix not a dang brain surgery). Tom said that I had an issue with an control arm, after further analysis it was only rusted(he said it was falling apart). These guys need to be shutdown and arrested this isn't scamming this a full on illegal operation. Stay far away from this place. Side note they charged me $100 dollars for a oil change and some air. read more

I wanted to give NO STARS. This is the second time I have posted a negative review of this station. Several years ago, after I dropped my car because my check engine light was on, Tom (service manager, I assume) called me and said I would need around $1500 in work (including new tires). I was distraught, and a friend told me about her mechanic in Gaithersburg. I took my car there, with Tom's estimate, and they told me I needed none of the work, except the new tires. I've never gone back. Except today. I wanted to have my oil checked. The mechanic told me the oil was fine, but I needed to have a new water pump. Tom called later with a $500+ estimate. Took it for another opinion---nothing wrong. THIS GUY IS A CROOK. read more

Film-flam shop. Every time I took my car there, another problem magically popped up days after. I recently found out they forgot to put lug nuts back on a tire. They once tried to charge me labor for fixing something they didn't do right, admittedly, the first time. Work was slowly completed. Mechanic was rude. I've gone to this BP on a number of occasions, with things needing to be done ASAP and they were wonderful. They dropped pretty much everything to help out and get me on my way in record time. At least three time, they did not even charge for the (brief but needed) service. Two other times, they suggested repairs/additional work. Yes, it costs, but you know what, I needed those repairs and I got faster and better service than at my overwhelmed dealership. They have always given me a precise estimate and I've never had to pay more. I'm very thankful to Tom & his team, for making my life easier, and making sure my cars are safe to drive. read more

I came here with an open mind having read both good and bad reviews. I had a 12 yo Volvo that would not start-needed new battery and alternator. The price kept going up but my daughter needed the car and I accepted this as the price of doing business-Volvo parts are expensive etc. Then I brought my 2 yo Audi with 24 K miles needed an oil change. The next thing I knew I was told I needed over 2 K worth of work: Freon: 67.50 Engine air filter: 37.00 Cabin air filter: 26.95 Rear brake rotors: 145.90 Flush brake system: 38.95 Evap check valve: 20.00 Front brake rotors: 205.90 Recharge A/C system: 115.00 Cabien and Air filters: 172.50 Rear Brakes: 460.00 Flush brake system: 115.00 Evap system: 115.00 Front brakes: 230.00 (They also told me I needed my tires rotated but I had had that done like 4 weeks before when I replaced two tires due to a flat. The Goodyear people said that was all I needed and did not need four new tires or additional work.) Obviously with all the stuff about the brakes I was concerned. But the car is not old and lightly driven. (BTW the oil change was 242.70?? Due to a $115 "engine flush." I agreed to that but now doubting what that was.) I took it to Audi directly for a second opinion. For free-no charge-they said NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY CAR!!! They even sent me a little video of my car as they went point by point in my car. And even if some of that stuff was, it would have been covered by warranty at Audi. Wow. I never thought a dealership would be cheaper than a local place. I am a physician-I truly get what it must feel like to be a member of the general public at the mercy of an expert. I know I don't know anything about cars. As a widow with two teen daughters (one of whom dropped of cars) I feel totally exploited. read more

This place is shady. I have brought my car in for a simple oil change a couple of times and each time they call me a few hours later saying I need $1500 worth of additional work on the car. This last time I told them to just do the oil, I questioned them on it when I picked up my car, and they couldn't substantiate half of what they said I needed over the phone. Dropped my car off here a couple weeks ago to have a headlight repaired, and they called not long thereafter to let me know a brake line had broken when moving it on the lot. Seemed strange, as it stopped fine when going to the shop. Brake line replacement often involves a LOT of labor, and my car is no exception. Most people would be suspicious about this, but I trusted them, and agreed to have the repair done. They did NOT make this up (I checked later that day), and the service manager Tom recommended a couple of other repairs, which I agreed to also, he did though; advise me on what could wait, and what shouldn't. I asked them later to tell me how the oil looked, and the mechanic told me it still looked find and didn't need to be changed yet. Not always the case with repair shops, and this bodes well for honesty too. Things took a while as my car is older, but different mechanics checked in with me with updates as things progressed. When I picked it up, they all greeted my like an old friend, even though this was my first repair here. Nice to see mechanics that take pride like that, it says a lot of good things about management. While this wasn't a cheap repair, the hourly rates were not unreasonable, and the amount of hours was pretty accurate. I often stop here for fuel but this was my first visit for maintenance, and won't be my last. Places where one can actually get a car worked on in the district are getting hard to come by, and I'm glad this neighborhood shop is still around. read more

I disagree vehemently with the previous reviewers. I came here as a desperate man, a man that had been thrown out of the Exxon station a couple of hundred yards up the street. A man living on borrowed time. A man who knows that if he stalls his car it will never move again. The half mile or so along Connecticut to get here was the longest I ever drove. I was almost tempted to turn around and go to Liberty in Md who i know are good people. But like an oasis in the desert, I saw it and turned my Citroen in there. I was welcomed like the prodigal son. Three of the mechanics are from Mali - French West Africa - and they knew my Citroen " oh my God" they said in their lyrical French-African accents - " this is the big money car - this is the big money car" The had n't seen one since they were kids and they loved it when I turned on the hyropneumatic suspension and raised the car about 24 inches up. Then - unlke the complete d^ck at Exxon, they put a battery in for me and sent me on my merry way. $180 for a battery and installation might be a bit pricey - but it gave me wind, it gave me wheels, it gave me wings. read more

How much worse you can get than "losing" a car/motorcycle in your possession? Maybe it was stolen, but I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE VEHICLE OR ANY REIMBURSEMENT SINCE. Unfortunately, I brought my scooter here for repair in July 2013. When I returned to pick it up, they told me they "NO LONGER HAD IT". When I returned for it, the man in charge of the motorcycle repairs looked uncomfortable, but made no offer to reimburse me or make any reparation. For what it's worth, they offered me the keys back. They could have been copied; I don't know. They didn't have any explanation for why it wasn't there. Heck, if there had been a service charge for alteration they made, it would have then been theft! But since they were waiving the service charge, it was not an issue, simply a "disappeared" scooter. We called the DC Police and created a police report. I returned on one more occasion with the police report (in which they clearly admit to losing possession of the bike while it was in their custody) and they declined to reimburse me for the value. EXTREME CAUTION URGED! Use only if this is a better alternative than having your vehicle stolen, with only a police report to show for it! Feel free to contact me for details or more information. I took my car in for an oil change, and they told me my serpentine belt was worn out. Okay, I thought. So I gave them the go ahead to replace it, and I come back the next day to a bill of $1,070 dollars. Even with a healthy margin of error, that's an overcharge of about $850. On top of that, when I got my car back it was littered with parking tickets to the tune of $100. The mechanics had parked it on the street illegally the night before, and they refused to knock a dollar off the price, or to pay for the parking tickets, so all told that simple oil change ended up costing me about $1200. Then the serpentine belt broke a month later, and I was told by the dealership point-blank that it had never even been replaced. He took me into the garage to show me the scarred, weathered remnants of the belt, which had clearly been with the car for all of its 65,000 miles. They went ahead and changed it for $80. I don't think I've ever been to a garage that was quite so upfront about its dishonesty. They actually laughed at me when I complained about the price. Don't go. Tell your friends not to go. And if you think you can get away with it, find someone who works there and trip them near a puddle. read more

Definitely the worst service station I have ever had the misfortune to have my car die in front of. My car was smoking, I had no choice but to stop and they knew it. They charged me $50 just to stop in (which is absurd) and then called later with a laundry list of things that are wrong with my car totaling about $3500. They also claimed my car wouldn't run at all because they couldn't start it, which was a bold faced lie. Luckily AAA will tow your car for free so I paid the assholes their $50 and got it towed out of there where a real mechanic who I've known for years said he would get it running for a mere $600. The difference is appalling, I thought my car was completely totaled and it turns out that it is actually drivable for a pretty modest fee. DO NOT EVER BRING YOUR CAR HERE. THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF IN A HEART BEAT, no matter how desperate or in trouble you are. SHARKS, every single one of them. read more

I agree with Peter on their service and charge. They appear to be honest and fair for the cost and job but here is the truth. They will show you how much it cost for parts like battery on the computer and they can't do anything for the price of the parts but their labor is very cheap, and so it sounds like the parts cost a lot and their labor costs nothing so you are getting a good deal from them. BUT I found out that they are charging double or triple for the parts (the quote for the parts was already charged high enough to cover their labor, you just don't know about it unless you researched about the price of parts you need on the internet or from others) in their database in the computer, so that you can't argue with them for the charge on the parts. Besides, They put low quality battery for my car when my battery died for other reason (they said my battery needed to be replaced but my battery was fine and a good one). I found out why my battery died and it wasn't because my battery needed to be replaced and other technician fixed the problem by working on the engine part. Don't go Amoco. read more

I really wanted to believe this was a fair and credible business. I knew I needed brake work when I heard that scraping noise. They charged $2000+ and I bit the bullet. Felt a little better when they replaced headlights for a promised amount of $64.00. But they also claimed I needed a PCV valve. Researched on the internet, the cost should have been between $80-$120. Their quote...$800. The valve looks like a little triangle shaped tube. Seems like arbitrary inflation. Now I'm in obvious need of more work. And I just don't trust them. read more

Because of the large number of negative reviews, I almost chose not to go to 5100 Connecticut Ave BP, but am glad that I did. Someone stole one of my windshield wipers and two days of rain were about to start. As a visitor from NYC, I have no regular service station, so had to do some quick research. Despite the bad reviews, I took a chance and the guys at 5100 BP responded quickly to my call for help; were available as promised when I arrived shortly after they opened; installed the wiper efficiently and effectively; did not overcharge me; and, were friendly and professional from start to finish, which was several minutes before the rains came. read more

My 17-year-old daughter locked herself out of her 12 year old Jeep not once but TWICE two weeks ago! She had Frankie help her the first time; 2nd time, she called me hysterically crying. I thought there had been an accident. Turns out, she did it again! I told her to walk back to the station and ask for help, knowing they'd do what they could even if they had other work to do. Frankie came back, didn't charge her and undoubtedly did his best not to laugh! John and his team define what it means to be a good local business and service station. I remember being a kid and my dad having a great relationship with the guys up the street. No problem too small and even when they couldn't fix it, they'd try to help. The owner is horrendous and so are the employees. I had extremely low air in my tire. Pulled in to use the air compressor in the parking lot. Held it on the air valve for about 10 seconds. My tire exploded!!! 2 guys that worked there walked out. One of them said "do your ears hurt" while smiling at me like it was a joke and the other one was laughing. My immediate reaction was to ask how much air does that thing put out? He said 150 lbs!!! Are you kidding me?? 150 lbs of air? Btw, no gauge whatsoever ever in the hose. When I went in to talk the owner John Connor. He acted like it was no big deal or it was my fault. I went out to install my spare, when I went back inside to talk to the owner. They said he suddenly left. Surprise!! They refused to give me the name of the company and their insurance information. I can assure you they haven't heard the last of me. Steer clear of this place. I LOVE THIS SHOP!!!! John, Tom, Frankie and the rest of the guys at Connecticut Ave BP are the best. I run a commercial fleet business and needed to bring in my Ford E350 for its first major service at 75,000 miles. I told the guys I had only allocated 1 day for the vehicle to bout of service. They told me "no problem!" so I dropped it off the night before. The van needed major maintenance work and required lots of parts and time. They basically dedicated a day of shop time to my vehicle. They completed ALL the repairs recommended on time at a very fair price. There was no questionable sales tactics nor did I feel like I was being over charged. The van runs like new and I didn't even miss a business day out of service. These guys know what they are doing! I will not hesitate to send people to this shop when they want and need the best skilled mechanics at a fair price. read more

This place is awful. I came here because there was no other shop open during a Saturday and I needed two tires. I understand I was most likely going to pay a premium for having work done on a Saturday. But I wasn't expecting to pay 530$ for two tires. In addition I was never told what the charge would be- just told to come back at five that day. With that being said they were trying to get me to get all new brakes done and suspension, when I had just gotten that stuff done a month earlier. I understand that each shop wants to capitalize on their profits- but to insist that I get all this stuff done when I had gotten it done a month earlier shocked me. Especially since the fact that they made it seem like it was life or death that they do the work. In my opinion a dishonest shop. This place promotes its tire replacement service with "free air". I have used them several times to replace tires. Each time they replace a tire they (mamadu) tell me I need other repairs - always brakes and the last time was brakes + "front upper control arms" - for a total of $2200. I have never had them do the work because I have a long standing relationship with a reputable shop near my office and both times they told me I did not need new brakes nor did I need new control arms. I was ready to have the work done by my shop if it was truly needed - but it was not. I complained to the owner who tried to tell me my kind of car has a history of needing "front upper control arms" with low mileage (39K). The starter that I had put in my car about two and a half years ago by the folks at Connecticut Avenue BP died a week ago (though it started acting up about three months ago). I've honestly never heard of a new starter dying so fast (maybe they didn't actually put in a new part?), and neither had the mechanic who installed the new one. And here's the best part. I got it replaced for $400 instead of the $800+ that BP charged me. All of this to say, I wouldn't recommend this spot to neighbors. read more

I'm really surprised by the bad reviews. I've taken 4 different cars here over a period of years and I've never had anything but honest service from these guys. They're fine for routine maintenance and I've even had them do more complex work on cars that were out of warranty. Never had a problem. I do think it helps to develop a relationship with people. Talk to the guys - especially John, the owner. John has gone above and beyond for me several times, storing tires for me, selling used parts, even dropping parts off at my house once or twice. No one garage will ever be experts on every car, or every problem. No one shop will always be able to get parts cheaper for you than any other place on the internet. But I am completely confident that this place works in good faith, doesn't scam customers, and do quality work. read more

Best service ever! As a woman, I'm leery when going to have my vehicle worked on in fear the mechanics will take advantage and jack up the price. This was not the case at all here, I was pleasantly surprised at the acceptional professionalism and expedited work! I brought my Nissan Armada in which had a broken exhaust pipe that had to not only be replaced, but specially fit/welded on due to how it had rusted and broke off. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE FOR REPAIRS! Reposting bc the original seems to have disappeared. I have had nothing but bad experiences here. I've generally had a vague feeling that these guys are looking to do a bunch of work that isn't required. As I've had a few old-ish cars recently (more than 10 years old) with high mileage that my babysitter drives around town to pick my kids up from school. Despite these vague feelings that they are trying to rip me off, I generally chalked up these experiences to a car that was old and had too many miles. I know a bit about cars but not enough to know if I'm told that x thing needs to be replaced if that is legit or not. My view of this place changed recently when my worst fears were confirmed. I was considering purchasing a used car from a family friend for the babysitter to drive to replace the previous one, which was becoming very expensive in terms of maintenance. The previous owner took very good care of it and had flawless records of maintenance. I took it to the BP to have them inspect the car prior to purchasing it. They gave it a glowing review, said it was in fantastic condition and would last for years to come. Six weeks later the car was bucking and shimmying with numerous warning lights on. and undrivable. I had it towed to the BP and they evaluated the issue. I was told the following were issues that needed to be addressed immediately: - ignition system problem - new spark plugs needed - water pump - timing pump - brake shoes - nail in the tire (that no one had observed previously) I was quoted around $4,000 for this work. This was obviously surprising as six weeks earlier, these guys told me that this car was in great shape. I was left wondering if they are lying now or were they lying six weeks ago. So I spoke directly to the mechanic. What he said was that the water pump gets replaced based on mileage and unless it had been previously replaced it was due to be replaced. Ditto the timing belt. I was told that the brake shoes showed normal wear and weren't urgent to replace BUT if I didn't replace them when needed it would warp the rotors. That left unresolved an ignition issue, replacing spark plugs, and a nail in the tire. I had the car towed to the dealership where they diagnosed a problem with an ignition coil and changed it while replacing the spark plugs. The MO of the BP in my experience is that they tell you everything that could be wrong with your car based on mileage and if you push back with questions back down. I'm fairly certain that with previous cars in some cases I've paid for repairs that were not necessary. As hard as it is to find a decent mechanic in DC, I definitely won't go back to these guys. read more

I wasn't expecting to get the car back until the next day but they called about 20 minutes later. Everyone was friendly and the price was exactly what they quoted when I dropped it off. *CAVEAT* If you want work done on your MOTORCYCLE, this is a great place to take it. Their motorcycle mechanic is a separate operation, and has nothing to do with their CAR service (which sucks). Would not recommend these guys. $50 just to look at the car, and they said IF it will cost more than that to fix the problem "we'll call you". As if they had no inkling as to what could be causing to problem with the car, or what they might have to do to fix it. It was an old car that definitely COULD have used some substantial work, but I was interested in getting one particular problem fixed. Anyhow they cooked up $1600 dollar laundry list of things they wanted to do, and would not (or could not, which indicates they're not very good mechanics) try to minimize the repairs to fix just the ONE problem I had. Further, they parked my car illegally which resulted in a $100 dollar ticket that I am now responsible for, even after trying to convince them to cover it. So I ended up out $150 for nothing as a result of visiting this garage. Bad deal. read more

It is the only shop nearby which will work on full-sized vans and trucks. Good courteous service and reasonable prices. Also regarding part prices, if you bring the parts, they will install them but they will not warranty the part. However, there is always a mark-up when the shop buys them for you and this can be 100%. read more

For years I have thought this service station was taking care of me, then after having an insurance related repair, I found that they were taking advantage of me. I learned they charged 200% over MSRP for parts, doubled the time for labor and generally just about refused to work with the insurance firm until I threatened to call my lawyer. John was a lifesaver this past Sunday. My daughter was all packed for the 7-hour drive to school when we noticed a strange rattle under the car. We were very happy to discover that this BP station has a mechanic on Sunday.. By 9 am, John had the car up and discovered a critical bolt was missing. He did not have one in stock but drove to a local hardware store, found a similar bolt, cut it down so it would fit, and attached it securely. By 11:30 am, a very happy college girl was driving off to her senior year in a repaired and safe car. And -- all for a very reasonable price. Ripoff artists, over and over. After years of patronizing this place, buying extraordinarily expensive gasoline and bringing cars here for repair, (I must be glutton for punishment), today we totally wrote this place off. Not only did they quote repairs at double the going rate, they also told me I needed complete brake and rotor repair, without actually looking at the condition of the brakes. They didn't know I'd just had the brakes checked out two weeks ago by a guy who DID put the car on the lift in order to check them out.
