This place is a scam. I ordered a small "fresh squeezed orange juice" for $5.50 and received bitter water downed orange juice diluted with sugar. I asked her if it has sugar and she said, "Absolutely not." I showed her the white sugar on the bottom of the cup and she said they were seeds from the oranges. After spilling out the orange juice, I tasted it and it was sugar, just like I thought. I asked for a refund and she refused. Don't support businesses that cheat their customers! read more

I liked their fresh juice smoothie, Jordan River, a combination of orange juice, cantaloupe, banana, strawberries and pineapple. It was quite filling, although very sweet! So, I've been in La Jolla for maybe 7 years now (wow college and grad school take a long time!). Dr. Juice has always been there, just begging for me to go in. As other reviewers have said, it looks slightly shady, but I always kept it in the back of my mind as a place that could hit the spot under the right circumstances. When the right time came along, my girlfriend and I had been swimming in the cove and where thirsty, hot and tired. I suggested we go to Dr. Juice as I had never been there and a cold glass of juice sounded awesome. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon on a weekend, and we walked up. We started to walk in and were greeted not with a hello, but with a "Stop!" by the guy behind the counter. Apparently he must have been cleaning the floors. I aksed if he was open, to which he gruffly responded "Yes!" and started to head to the back. No "hello", no "what would you like", no "hold on a second, i'm cleaning and will be right there". I don't need to be pampered but I have no interest in giving my money and business to someone who is rude to people who want to visit the place. Running a restaurant is a service industry- save the attitude for some other job. I told him I felt that his attitude was rude and that we were first time visitors, but there was no attempt to rectify the situation. First visit, last visit. read more

For all those who think this place is expensive or depends on tourist, you don't about this place. It's an old fashioned mom and pop type business that has survived in La Jolla for too long. It's mostly regulars who stop by for their usual juice after morning or afternoon run. They make sandwiches for lunch which is mainly for guys working in the neighborhood stores. Their acai bowls are good value too. This is not a jamba juice where you use your coupons and expect giant sizes for low price. Good luck if you can find one in La Jolla cove. The juice is really good, served cold (even without ice), and the prices are pretty good. Then again, I come from NY where a 16 ounce juice runs you 7 to 8 dollars. Here, for $16, we got two 2-ounce shots of wheatgrass and two big big juices. Each juice was $5 and the wheatgrass was $1.50/ounce. The people who owned it were nice also, but our one complaint is that we went back 2 days later to get another juice, and they were closed. Extremely unsanitary. I can't believe I paid $7.50 for a juice here. I should have just walked away. The owner was smoking when we walked in, then lit out his cigarette as soon as he noticed customers were coming. I hadn't noticed he was smoking otherwise I would have left (my husband was behind me and he told me). There was another lady behind the counter who was on the phone and eating. The man never greeted us. Anyhow I finally managed to order something and then noticed he didn't wear gloves when making my juice. I wish I had said something but didn't. If you want to throw your money into the garbage like I did a full smoothie, go here. Acai smoothie with almond milk was spoiled and weirdly sweeter than any icing you've ever tasted. The owner denied any sugar in it although everyone else's smoothie made with apple juice was not sweet at all to my taste. "The açai smoothie is always incredibly sweet." The owner wouldn't make eye contact and refused to remake it or replace it with any other juice and stated that you would "have to buy another one. " Hostile customer service with extremely spotty hygine in a very makeshift no budget juice bar. It's unfortunate, they get customers mainly because of their location but there are far more hygienic and honest juice bars in La Jolla. I came to Dr. Juice because I felt like I was about to keel over. I spent the preceding night hanging out with my friends and getting to know and an old acquaintance of mine, Charles Shaw (hey I was a poor college student). Dr. Juice seemed to be the answer to all my prayers because I was able to find a quick cheap healthy meal in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the State. I'm not juicer and I don't drink that many smoothies but Dr. Juice sells great sandwiches and snacks like fruit and cottage cheese. It is very convenient for beach goers because it is just steps away from the La Jolla Cove. Also, Dr. Juice is a great safety net because if you out in La Jolla, you will inevitably want to pay a visit to the neighborhood Haagan Dazs , but if you are jonesing for something cold and sweet you can get healthy, tasty smoothie at Dr. Juice instead. When I visited Dr. Juice, I didn't get smoothie, I got yummy veggie burger. It was tasty and it gave me some pep, but did little to cure my hangover. I came in and got a juice for me and my cousin before our walk along the Cove. The ingredients are not refrigerated, but you can add ice to make your drink cold. The drink was refreshing, the only drawback was that it is served in a foam cup. read more

I loved this place! Very fresh ingredients and extremely accommodating. They didn't have gluten free granola but they were very kind to offer a coconut or sunflower seed replacement. Healthiest and most delicious juice place around! And as far as smoothies go, these guys very rarely ever use frozen fruits (as opposed to Jamba), so you can be sure most of the proteins and enzymes don't get denatured. I walked in hopeful, inspired by the other reviews, but instead of ordering a smoothie I thought that a fresh squeezed lemonade would be nice. Well to my surprise, my supposedly delicious lemonade tasted more just like a mixture of sugar and water. Not to mention the seeds. Leaving lemons in the drink while still managing to not give it any flavor, it's almost unbelievable. But, after I asked for them to add more lemons, it was still pitiful.
