This is a cute little shop for oddities in downtown Riverside. They mostly stock teas, trinkets, and witchy stuff like crystals and herbs. I used to be more into that stuff as a kid, so while it's not quite my thing anymore, I still enjoy dropping by to check out the novelty goods. I got my favorite mug here and for a pretty fair price too! They make a huge variety of tea blends, available in tiny pouches so you can sample lots of different types without making a commitment to a huge bag. There is a shop cat who lives here named Pepper. She seems clean and friendly, and the teas are hung up on the wall and not placed on a table so you won't get litter paws all over your tea leaves. Maybe it's just something to be aware of if you have cat allergies or just dislike them. read more

5 STARS JUST FOR PEPPER ALONE. SHE IS SO CUTE AND MEOWY! Small and adorable she meows for treats and is a lovely employee of the shop! Staff is super helpful and aside from a lot of spirituality items, the shop is also a historical part of Downtown Riverside. One of their doors was a bank vault door? Pretty neat! They also have a great selection of small gift items like handmade soaps, loose teas (their Transylvania tea is DELICIOUS by the way), plushies, totebags, etc. I thought they were ginseng plushies, but their mandrake plushies are pretty darn cute. This little shop was recommended to me by an actual high priestess and someone at the Holistic vibes. I was looking for mercury planetary oil and I went to several places in Corona and called a shop in Claremont and no one carried what I was looking for. I'm happy the store is still open, I know they struggled during COVID but their still well and alive. The staff was welcoming and happy to help with any questions. They were low on the Tea Blends I wanted and they kept in touch and let me know when they would receive some in. My gf purchased a few oils and we plan to come back for some more the next time we are in downtown Riverside. They have a huge assortment of items ranging from sages, soaps, spiritual oils, etc. The staff was attentive and took the time to explain things as I am new to this. Disappointed with how downhill the store has gone. My experience today at this store was extremely horrible . Not sure why I was being followed around the store non-stop felt like I couldn't enjoy my shopping experience ( hope it wasn't cause of my brown skin color ) . The gentleman who works there was extremely rude as well. Tried to tell me the only books that were offered were European and I said " so like Celtics and stuff" and he laughed and said "the Celtics aren't European" . I bought some amazing tea here! Like 8-9 different kinds and I love them all. The staff was very helpful. Take note to bring your ID if you're going to use a debit/credit card. I had to have my partner come in who was waiting in the car because I happened to not have my ID on me (I don't drive). I've been to Dragonmarsh many many many times. I love the ambience and the vibe in the shop and I've actually taken classes there as well. The staff is knowledgeable and kind and they have a treasure trove of items to peruse. Give yourself lots of time to shop (when the quarantine is lifted) in the meantime I'm sure you can shop online. I love this store. I first discovered this after I moved to Riverside (on Lemon street a few minutes away) in 2003. I sometimes need herbs and they have the best (and only) source of herbs I can find for my needs without having to travel to San Diego or Los Angeles or order from the internet (often from outside of the US and with more expensive shipping costs). The cost has gone up over the years for many herbs (and incense) but for the most part they are still reasonably affordable for someone like myself without a regular income. So, when I need herbs for my remedies and 'potions', I go to Dragon Marsh, and when I do, I often find something else that catches my eye that I like. I especially love that they have a staff member now who happens to be a friendly cat. Sadly, after we could no longer afford to live in Riverside, we lost our home on Lemon St... I live in Hemet now, but still come back now and then to shop at Dragon Marsh. read more

Oils, Spices, & Everything Nices .... Oh. AND A Controversial Legal Battle Over Racism SITREP When walking this part of Riverside, I have slight reminisce of being in Old Sacramento. Not quite. But kinda. Elegant older stores in older buildings, though, is definitely the norm here. This historic area of Riverside features some dynamic older structures - such as the Mission Inn, the Old City Hall, the DeAnza Hotel, the Jackson Building, and the Harada House. These last two structures are of particular import, and I'll get into the history of them in a bit, though for now, I will mention that DRAGONMARSH - this sweet, quaint, larger store-version of a Renaissance Faire Booth - is epically housed inside the Jackson Building. ITEMS OF NOTE There are so many wonderful items to be gotten here. I was lucky that owner SAGE - an extremely personable and pleasant gentleman with a shared interest in Ren Faires, Swords, Mystical Potions, and a seller of Special Teas & Fragrant Incense - had time to share with me his wares. Besides the above items, there are also: * Fabrics with 15 different patterns of skulls, or skulls & crossbones, or...more skulls! * Witches Hats! * Wizards Wands (You'd like these, Joe K.) * Cute knick-knacks like miniature hour (minute?) glasses And lots of other cool stuff that would make fun stuff at a SciFi meet-up or Anime convention. But there's definitely more to this place, and for a moment, I definitely felt like I was a kid looking for mushrooms, and accidentally stumbling onto hallowed Indian Burial grounds.... LOST CULTURE As time marches on, there are heart-wrenching stories of communities of people, immigrants from other lands, finding homes, founding businesses, and establishing a new life for themselves and their families. The beginning of the Asian American community in Riverside is barely documented, but it started - as much with this region did - in agriculture, and in Riverside specifically, with citrus. Large communities of both Chinese & Japanese immigrants lived in Riverside as early as the 1880s, and yet merely 40 years later by the Roaring 20s, had nearly vanished because of the intense bigotry against them. And for the Japanese-Americans, their numbers were further decimated by that ugly chapter in American history with their forced removal to internment camps during WWII. THE HARADA HOUSE One barometer of this ethnic pressure centered around this building that Dragonmarsh is in - known now as the Jackson Building - and the man who owned the business here back in the early 20th Century. Both his business, and his home that he (tried) to by in Riverside became a legal controversy: From the UC Riverside Asian American website: "In 1915, Riverside became the stage for a challenge to the Alien Land Law when Issei (first-generation, immigrant Japanese) restaurant owner Jukichi Harada bought a home in downtown Riverside in his Nisei (second generation, American-born) children's names. His new neighbors- mostly White- resisted his presence, first trying to buy him out and then taking him to court. The case went all the way to the California Superior Court as The People of the State of California vs Jukichi Harada and was eventually decided in favor of the Haradas. The Harada house (built in 1884) still stands at 3356 Lemon Street and was designated a National Historic Landmark (by the National Park Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior) in 1990." And here I thought I was just going to look at some Ren Faire knick-knacks. THE LOWDOWN A terrific store with all sorts of eclectic items for the Ren Faire / SciFi-Fantasy enthusiasts, standing within the hallowed ground of one this state's most controvesial legal battles over racism. read more

Sometimes when I wanted to get away from the noise and bustle of campus, I would hop on the bus and study in the Downtown Library. After I was done studying, I would walk around the downtown area just to see what was around in the area. I love tea, and when I saw this place, it was a dream come true.
