The TL;DR The salon swapped my stylist without letting me know and gave me the worst haircut of my life. I made an appointment with one stylist, named Mimi, who has great reviews for working with curly hair, but when I arrived at the salon they told me the appointment did not go through. However, they told me not to worry, have a sit and they will input my appointment in the system have be right with me. Then they told me to have a seat and that the stylist will be right with me. What they did not tell me was that it will be different stylist. Well, I never looked worse in my life, and she cut it so extremely short (I asked for a mid-length bob) that there is nothing left to work with. I basically have the most hideous bowl cut that is at the ears. Asking for mid-neck length and getting a cut above the ears is not a small mistake. The top layer is at eyebrow level. And she kept telling me that the hair is longer that what I asked for. HOW? I never looked worse in my life. It will take many months of looking horrible before I even have enough hair to try and fix. When i went to pay (in shock) the stylist gave me her name (Jade), and that is when I realized they gave me a different stylist than the one I asked for. They NEVER asked me if I was ok with a different stylist or even informed me that someone else would cut my hair. They could have let me know that Mimi was not available and ASKED ME if I wanted another stylist or wanted to re-schedule. They were also not professional or polite, and they just rushed me along like I was some cattle inconveniencing everyone. I didn't even realize what happened until the end. This is the absolute worst experience I ever had with a hair salon. read more

I had a really amazing experience at dramatics with my hair stylist Kat!! I came in with super horrible looking, uneven and brassy hair that I had bleached myself hoping to go to a silvery purple all while staying within my broke recent college grad budget. Kat took her time on my hair and made sure she wasn't going to damage it. She even let me do test strands of different shades of purple, and styled it for free. I went here back in February 2021 for a balayage. I had thick, black curly virgin hair and I was terrified that my curl pattern would be ruined because it. I found Redd on Tik Tok and coming here was the greatest decision I've ever made! Initially I wanted just a normal burgundy color but after seeing Redd's work, I decided on a red/pinkish color. Thank god I did - the color was beautiful and did not start to fade until late April/early May (I used VIRAL Colorwash and color-safe conditioner). I paid a pretty penny for my hair but YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET! It was worth every penny I spent here. COVID-19 Procedures: The salon was clean and it had been roughly a week after they moved to the new location. My temperature was checked, I was provided hand-sanitizer, and a wipe to clean any of my belongings. I met Scarlette, a wonderful hairdresser back in May. I did a simple walk-in for a haircut in which she nailed! She gave me the best layered haircut. Later on, I discovered what an amazing hair colorist she is! Which in my past experience have not always been the greatest.. Scarlett puts a lot of attention to ever strand of hair! I really like dramatics salons. They're standardly good hair cuts and blow dry's. I've been going to various Dramatics in NYC for about four years now and have never left unhappy or disappointed. The Upper East Side location is no different in terms of good quality. It's not a bougie nyc salon but you do feel welcomed and cared for. My last haircut was with Pandora and I very much enjoyed her. She even gave me some styling ideas and highlight tips. I'll definitely be going back to her. read more

I've been getting my hair cut, colored and treated with Katt for close to 2 years. When I met her I had virgin hair that I was trying to transition from years of heat damage. I did not want to go for a big chop so we created a plan for regular cuts to preserve length and remove damage. Katt listened to my long term hair goals and made me feel at ease. My cut and blow out was perfect and I got her signature beachy waves. I could tell she was truly listening to me and wanted to help me achieve my hair goals. Strange pricing alert: So the first time I went, I booked my appointment online. At the end of my haircut, I was charged $65 including a wash and blow dry at the end. It was a good hair cut and I was happy with it so I decided to return to the place. Then the second time I called. I asked how much a hair cut is (because I heard the online price is different from call-in price from my friend), he could not give me a straight answer and kept asking how much I paid last time. Apparently they don't have a set price and everything is depending on "what you want in salon". OK I understand that to certain extent even it seems little fishy. Then I said I don't need a wash nor a blow dry at the end. He said it would be the same price since I called to request a specific stylist. That's really the strangest thing I've heard about haircut. You pay more just because you like someone?! I've never had that in other hair salon. Don't think I would be returning. Horrible experience. I made 2 appointments for me and my friend to get NYE blowouts and confirmed them via the email sent to me the day prior. The day of the salon called me, informed me in a rude tone that I was wrong to use their own website, and that there was actually only one appointment. My friend graciously backed out so I still went and when I arrived the hair stylist was condescending and making fun that I specifically asked for no bevel or flip. I suppose the blowout came out fine but most salons can do a blowout without making the customer feel in the wrong at every step of the process. read more

My experience with this salon was awful. The hairdresser overbleached my hair causing serious breakage.And if this wasn't bad enough my scalp and ear were burned. The hairdresser didn't pay attention to the amount of time I was under the dryer. I had second degree burns to my ear and scalp. I had to go to urgent care for treatment and medication.My hair looked like a mass of cotton candy and I have had to spend hundreds of dollars for deep conditioning treatments. 2/8 update: Received a voicemail from Trey (who is lovely!) at the front desk apologizing for my experience - he let me know that they have a 7 day hair guarantee, so I could come in and get it fixed up. I was skeptical because the issue was already more was chopped off thank wanted in the layers but figure I'd give it a try. SO GLAD I DID! They almost had me go with the same person who cut my hair yesterday. Thankfully she was busy. Instead Pandora took me and she is INCREDIBLE. Even she looked pretty confused as to how I ended up with a hair length that went longer, shorter, longer (you could tell she thought it was a disaster). But with some some texturizing and proper angling she completely saved my haircut and it actually looks great now! She even did a touch of blowing out to make sure it looked good. I would definitely go back just to see her. On my way out Trey also have me a leave in conditioner as another gesture of good customer service, which I appreciated. They really took great steps to amend my poor experience from yesterday and secure a return customer! Biggest tip to anyone going here though - be careful which stylist you get! They are NOT all created equal. 2/7: Well... you get what you pay for. Went in here on a whim for a simple cut - light angle and subtle long layer, and ended up with a bit of a butcher job. First sign I should have been worried was when she drew the part in middle of head on an angle. Layers were super choppy and blunt and definitely not long layers, with random layers near the front just looking like they were accidentally cut pretty short. I couldn't fully see it until I got home and got a closer look (since I didn't get a blowout after it was a bit hard to see the final outcome). Very disappointed. read more

I didn't like what they did with my hair, and they've cut my boyfriends hair forever and I was oftentimes displeased by the results because he really is very cute and they undermined that. BUT! I've been coming here for something like 18 (!!!) years to get cuts from Glaze and highlights from Crystal. I highly recommend, I wouldn't trust anyone but Crystal to do highlights and Glaze always gives me a variety of great short cuts, from bobs to pixies. I'm experimenting with red hair now, but when I go back to blonde I'm sure I'll be back to Crystal! I also had my hair styled for my wedding by Fame and got just what I wanted. read more

First ever yelp review, but I really wanted to compliment Katt. It's the first time I've liked a hair cut on the day I got it. As other reviewers have mentioned, she is super attentive to details and really listens to what you want. She probably could have finished my haircut very quickly, but I was nervous, so she took her time and made sure that each piece was at the length I wanted. She is also the first hairdresser who listened and didn't try to convince me otherwise when I said I didn't want any kind of product in my hair and I just wanted to dry my hair naturally to see what it looks like - most others try to tell me if should try some product or a diffuser. I've never written a review before, but my hair and the service I received tonight is something out of the ordinary. Serge did an amazing job on my hair, so beautiful. I've done so many different styles with my hair and been to so many stylists but never have I loved my hair so much that I ever bothered to write a review, so it's that amazing. It's beautifully blended magenta and purple, all over my hair really rich bright colors but styled in a way that it looks almost natural. I've been wearing a pixie for over twenty years. After moving to NYC I decided to grow it out simply because I couldn't find anyone I trusted to cut it right. A month ago I decided to get a simple trim for my now-bob and walked into Dramatics. Mostly because it wasn't pricy and in my neighborhood. I got paired with Pandora who absolutely blew me away! She transformed my blah into a super sharp blunt cut. I loved it so much but realized it's just too much work for me and I was ready to return to a pixie. Buyer beware! My mom came here for a simple blow out and we were incredibly disappointed by the salon. Not only did the salon charge her $60 for a blow out that was advertised on their website as $38, the stylist was trying to sell her "hemp oil" as a cash only arthritic remedy when MY MOTHER JUST WANTED A BLOW OUT. I had a dinner date and unfortunately woke up late for work. Hence, I didn't have time to wash my hair and have it styled to out last my day at work. So after rushing to go uptown after work, I had about an hour before my date. I've been to Dramatics on 23rd st and service was ok not superb. But being short on time I decided to say what the hell and give it a whirl. Not only was I a walk in with no appointment but I told them that I needed a wash and blow dry, and all the time available to do so was less than an hour. The front desk was so helpful and quick, they found a stylist that was available and also told her that I only had an hour. Upon hearing this the stylist rushed me to a chair, prepped me, washed my hair herself, and started styling. She was very friendly and did a great job. The staff there were very nice!!! read more

Called at 10 AM to ask if they had any availability for that morning. The receptionist told me absolutely and asked if 1030 was good. She took my name and I headed over. When I arrived the salon was far from busy. Stylists were chatting and huddled around cell phones. The stylist asked me what I wanted and told me they'd changed their pricing and a cut would be $25. Plus an extra $55 for a blow-dry ($55?!?!). I said just a cut then. She went to the desk and came back to tell me that because I made an appointment (ie/ called 30 minutes before I headed over) a cut was $40. I thought this was weird but needed the haircut. When I went to pay I asked the receptionist to explain the pricing. She said that because I made an appointment it was mor expensive. THIS MAKES NO SENSE. Basically I paid a premium for making a call 30 minutes ahead of walking over. When they had plenty of open appointments. The receptionist was absurdly rude. I felt scammed by their system since she could have told me simply to walk over and instead took my name to charge me an extra $15. Be very very very aware of how much you're going to pay ahead of time since the seem to make up prices on a whim. read more

Serge gives an exceptional blow out! I can totally relax while he's got the brush and dryer in hand because I know I'm in great hands! Serge's blow outs are consistent and look fantastic whether I ask for some volume and curls or bone strait. I don't know how he does it but my hair stays straight after he blows it for up to a week or longer- as long as I don't get it wet. "Meh. I've experienced better." That about sums it up. Growing up in NYC, I frequently went to Dramatics and always liked it, but for the past 3 years or so I've stopped going or only go when I'm in town and don't have the money or energy to go anyplace else. My beef is the freakin' UPSELLING and product pushing. Jesus. The second to last time I went to a Dramatics it was 2 years ago, I went in for a cut and color, and the color took so freakishly long (way longer than I'm used to, 2 hoursish) that I didn't even have time to get my hair cut. And all the while they were trying to sell me crap. This past time was a few weeks ago, I was in town for a wedding, and went to get a cut. I had considered highlights but decided I didn't have the dough. I get there and immediately it's "We're going to lighten your hair." Not "Have you thought about highlights?" or "I would recommend highlights" but this is happening. Granted, I know I should have said "No thanks" but it's the principle! Then, as I'm getting my hair washed, the stylist walks by the shampoo chairs and tells the girl washing my hair to use the glaze shampoo. I am not savvy and didn't ask what the "glaze shampoo" was, but it turns out it cost me an extra $25. Again, not asked, wasn't even told--he told the girl washing my hair. Pissed. Again it look a long time, and again I left feeling ripped off. Color was good, cut OK but I think that's it--no more Dramatics for me. read more

I LOVE THIS HAIR SALON! I have been coming to Dramatics for about 3 years now and want to kick myself for never writing a review. I have always had the manager, Fame, do my hair and she is FANTASTIC. She is experienced with curly hair and totally understands whatever vision I have in my head. However, Fame was off today and I decided to go with another stylist, the lovely Scarlett! I knew what color I wanted (rose gold hues for the highlights I had already), but I was kind of all over the place about everything else. I wasn't sure if I needed more highlights, I wasn't sure if I wanted the existing highlights' roots to be colored in, I just had no clue! Scarlett was awesome and talked with me for a while to figure out what the best course of action would be. We ended up settling for a gloss with rose gold and a trim for my bangs. Going with the gloss versus getting a bunch more highlights and then a toner/gloss made me really happy because it was also a significantly cheaper option and made me feel like she wasn't just trying to make the salon more money; she actually had my best interests at heart and did a great job. She explained each step of the process and even recommended some ways to keep the color strong at home, (huge plus). I usually wear my hair curly, but Scarlett had Valentino (her very nice assistant) blow dry my bangs just to see the color and I was BLOWN AWAY. It looked even better than what I had in my head and I am just sooo happy. Thank you Dramatics for always giving me a great experience and thank you Scarlett for doing such an amazing job :). P.S. In general, everyone in this salon is extremely friendly. They offer you refreshments as they do your hair and everyone is super down to earth and not snobby at all. Yay! read more

STAY AWAY!!! They are NOT following the COVID protections listed on their website. The website explicitly states that the waiting area is closed. Yet, when I went not only was there someone in the waiting area, the receptionist offered me and other customers to sit in the waiting area (I chose to wait outside). I grew concerned about this violation of their own rules, and so I inquired and expressed my concern. I was met with rudeness and complete disregard for my concerns. The receptionist said "well, that's not required anymore, so we don't really do it." I asked why it was posted on their website still, and expressed how that's problematic for customers trying to make decisions about their safety and health. She responded with indifference, again stating they don't have to, so they don't do it. This is a flat out lie and NYS requires salons to have waiting ares closed by law; they are in violation, and it is especially concerning that the receptionist doesn't seem to even be aware that she is breaking the law. I was not permitted to speak with a manager. First she said the manager was not there, but she could call her. So I said sure, I would like to speak with her, and then the story changed that she could not call the manager because she's not allowed to hand the phone to a customer (the manager could have called me--they have all my contact info). She then had another woman come to back her up. The woman told me the receptionist was new and I needed to be patient with her. I explained that while I did not mind being inconvenienced, this was not about convenience, it was about the health and safety to me, them, and the other customers. The second woman I spoke with was also rude and was clearly very annoyed by my concern for her and my safety. She went over the safety precautions in place, explained to me that the receptionist was wrong and that they do not have the waiting room open (so then why did the receptionist say that they don't follow that rule anymore? Someone is lying.) She ended the conversation by saying "I have to go to work now, goodbye (in a nasty tone), and walked away allowing the door to close in my face. Clearly this business does not respect the well being of their customers. I feel bad for my stylist, Angel, who has always been amazing, and I feel bad that she lost business due to her colleagues and employers disregard for safety. I hope that she and the other stylists and customers are safe in that establishment. I left, and will not be returning. read more

I went in for a big chop on my first visit about a month ago. The first stylist available wasn't comfortable doing the drastic cut on my type of hair so she passed me along to Scarlett which I really appreciated her being honest and doing that instead of trying to do it anyway. Scarlett was awesome! She did exactly what I asked for. She was fun and made me feel very comfortable.
