Normally, customers are not allowed to bring electronics and devices past a certain point because the whole concept of the bathhouse is to unwind and step away from the busyness of everyday life. It it absolutely necessary to do so at times and this place truly helps to relax and reset. Urban baths Folsom is the first franchise offshoot from the popular Asha Urban Baths in Sacramento (which is also a great place but that's for another review). Guests check in and go into a coed changing area to lock up their belongings and change into something comfortable (swimsuit or another water outfit). Shoes are provided, towels can be rented for a nominal price. Once changed, with all electronics squared away, one may then enter the bathhouse. The main room is wheelchair accessible and contains both a massive warming pool and a smaller pool to the side that's much colder. The idea is to repeat a process that is proven to be very beneficial for the body--soak in the warming pool, sweat in either the steam room (pictured while it is off, but this room gets VERY steamy) or the sauna (smells so good in there!), and then cold plunge in the cold pool. Guests can repeat the process as many times as they would like. There are showers for rinsing off sweat before going back into the pools so if a cold plunge isn't your thing, you can turn the shower water a bit cooler and rinse off that way too. There are also lounge chairs and big bean bag chairs for people to sit in and converse in library-appropriate voices. The bathhouse isn't the only activity. There is also a sound immersion or a salt lounge experience. I've done the salt lounge and it's a very relaxing 45 minute session with two hour access to the bathhouse after. There's also a massage experience one can book--again, the bathhouse is there for once the session is over. I personally love this place. The staff are so friendly and the aesthetic really does make a person feel they have stepped away from the world for a time. I like being disconnected from my phone. The water temp is always perfect for me. The scents and the music and the ambience are just what I need to get away. It's great knowing such a nice, female-owned gem is only just down the road for me to visit whenever I feel life becoming too overbearing.

No instructions once we got to the room. I had to ask. He did ask me the pressure I prefer and I said moderately firm as I did book a deep tissue massage. So he begins my massage and it was awful for a full 60 mins of torture. It was not a massage at ALL. The pressure he was applying I thought he was going to break the table!! The whole table was shaking and it seemed like he whole point was like you asked for deep tissue, that's what you'll get. Nothing about it felt like a massage where you actually get your back rubbed it's was all pressure points, him using his elbows in my back. I should have stopped him but I thought maybe just maybe he will ease up on the areas where I didn't ask him to focus, I was wrong. I sucked it up and ran out of there. Never again will I book a massage here.

My hubs was hesitant to come back after his last session and especially after my review (he didn't know I was writing) but Elena & Jennifer helped him feel at ease of coming back and making it extremely flexible to rebook an appointment to come back in. Hubs went back to get the much needed deep pressure massage from Jennifer at The Spa Simply Skin. Both Elena and Jennifer were present to greet him. The ambiance of the room was serene as it was before. He keeps telling me about the nice Buddha in the massage room. Jennifer asked if the headrest area was ok was comfortable this time before proceeding. This time she asked about the massage pressure and if it was firm enough. She worked on getting his knots out which was greatly needed. She used a tool on his hands up/down his forearm that he said made him feel really good. He does repetitive work with his hands (handy electrician) and this helped relieve tension. After a few minutes, we were called back and shown the changing room. We were able to change and safely store our clothes and purses in lockers that only we had the key to. We were given clean robes and slippers, then directed to the relaxation room to wait for our couples "Perfect Time Out for 2" spa package in a private suite. The package includes either a 30-minute aromatherapy sauna or a 30-minute hydrotherapy bath, followed by a 60-minute combination massage. The combination massage uses both light and medium pressure and is meant to ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote lasting relaxation. We only sat in the relaxation room for a few moments before our massage therapists told us that our private suite was ready. When we walked in, the room was dark and lit with battery-operated candles. It smelled wonderful, and soothing music was playing. There was also a television mounted in the corner, which I didn't feel was necessary in such a relaxing environment. We began with the hydrotherapy bath. The bath normally includes almond oil, but because one of us has a mild almond allergy, they substituted bath salts and other wonderfully scented oils instead. The tub had jets that we could turn on, and it was very relaxing. After 30 minutes, our massage therapists let us know it was time to move to the tables for our 60-minute massages. We got down to our birthday suits and slipped underneath the sheets. Penny was my massage therapist, and my daughter had Remni. Penny did massage my entire body, but it felt more like she was rubbing my skin rather than working the muscles underneath. Honestly, I have had better 30-minute massages at the mall and during pedicures. However, I did appreciate the stretches and the relaxing oil rubdown.... sort of. I really wanted my muscles to be rubbed, but we never got there. My daughter, on the other hand, said her massage was amazing. Ugh--that's what I wanted! I'm glad she enjoyed herself. She said she would definitely go back. I would consider returning too, but I would want a different massage therapist next time. Throughout our visit, we were offered complimentary beverages. After our massages, we sat in the relaxation room, where I enjoyed a glass of red wine. Once I finished, we returned to the changing room. There was also a shower available if we wanted to rinse off before getting dressed. My daughter and I changed and headed to the front to take care of the bill. I spent almost two months looking at the Serenity Spa website and picking out exactly the services I wanted. I was GIDDY! I landed on the Indian Head Therapy, a facial, and then a chakra balancing massage, which a lunch in between. The facial and massage were both great. I would go back for each of those individually, for sure. The chakra balancing massage, in particular, was DELIGHTFUL. The Indian Head Therapy was so bizarre and not at all what I hoped for. It felt like the person who was supposed to do this treatment canceled at the last minute and they asked the esthetician if she could fill in. She started with my hands which immediately confused me because it's supposed to be head, neck and shoulders focused. It was super disappointing and I LOVE any and all head massages, but even when she got to my head, she was barely massaging it - I don't know how to describe it, but would not recommend. The layout of this spa makes the spa day not super ideal. In your robe, you have to traipse through the store front of the lobby, holding this super awkward basket full of all your belongings. I just felt so exposed and vulnerable naked in a robe, walking through a store! Lunch was $40. When I saw this on the website, I thought "oh! fancy lunch with some champagne! The vibe is that everyone is on edge, nervous, cranky, worried. Especially the people at the front desk were overly friendly but then kinda snipping at each other or at the people providing the services and then rolling their eyes at each other. It was a really odd vibe. So, all in all, I might go back for a single massage or facial, but I wouldn't choose this for a spa day. Things that would greatly improve this place: 1. Lockers or a place to store things that doesn't involve awkwardly carrying a basket. 2. Some sort of passageway that does not involve walking naked through the lobby to your next service. 3. Some sort of meal improvement - either a glass of champagne and a lunch upgrade or a SIGNIFICANT price decrease. Also the Costco cookie was so insulting - even a slightly fancier dessert might have taken the edge of the price off... 4. I also felt uncomfortable being lectured while I was scheduling the appointment initially about my treatment timing when I had already explained I received my last treatment in a different location on my face 2.5 months ago. I completely understand policies, but a small amount of flexibility in this situation would have made a big difference. Talking about massages, the table was a heated massage table. Nice. I also added a hand treatment. After the hydra facial, I was shown the water. It was cloudy, not too bad as I was told. She advised me on some products they offer, not a hard sell pitch. I declined; she didn't hard press which I appreciate. My face was glowing (luminous and rosy) and seemed less poof-y afterwards. My hands felt more moisturized. The dry skin on my inner palm gently sloughed off. The next day, they looked revitalized. Pricing is comparable or less expensive to other local places. The facility is clean and is gorgeously designed. It has a calming white color scheme. Giving off modern, posh vibes without the pretentiousness or clinical feeling. There is plenty of parking right in front of the building.
