When J-Pot first opened, it quickly became one of our favorite restaurants in San Antonio. The…read moreatmosphere was warm, welcoming, and genuinely felt like the staff wanted you there. Even on busy weekends, managers were constantly checking on guests, the self-serve bars were fully stocked, and the servers were knowledgeable about the menu and enthusiastic about the experience. It felt like they were trying to showcase Japanese barbecue and hot pot--not just serve a meal. Fast forward to today's visit... what happened? From the moment we walked in, the hostess acted like our arrival was an inconvenience, despite greeting customers being the job description. Our server was pleasant enough, but completely lacked enthusiasm for the product. At one point, when discussing an item, the response was essentially, "If you don't like it, you don't have to eat it." Fair enough--but that's light-years away from the hospitality we experienced just a few months ago. The self-serve stations have apparently changed, and several items now have to be ordered through the server. That's perfectly fine, but it would've been nice if someone had explained that at the beginning of the meal instead of us discovering it near the end. Then there were the bathrooms... I'm not a restaurant owner, but if you're open during Saturday lunch in the middle of a shopping center and business appears slower than it once was, you'd think keeping the restrooms clean would be a manageable priority. Soap dispensers were hanging off the wall, paper towels were stacked all over the bathroom, trash covered the floors, and--ironically--I found the napkins I couldn't get at my table... in the restroom. The employees clearing tables looked less like restaurant staff and more like high school students serving detention or trying to earn extra credit. The whole place feels like it lost its identity. What was once a polished, family-friendly restaurant with pride in the experience now gives off a "Come on, man... it's not that big of a deal if things are a little gross. We're trying our hardest." vibe. J-Pot used to have standards. Somewhere along the way, those standards seem to have been replaced by cost-cutting and indifference. The food is still good(ish, but that for a different time), but the experience that made this place special has largely disappeared--and that's the most disappointing part. Will JPot bounce back? Or will Jpot succumb to the lackadaisical labor mentality of the modern day employee (I blame communism) and commit seppuku??? The world awaits....

I ordered the one meat plate with cole slaw and bacon cheddar potatoes and it was yummy. The coleslaw was just right on the sweetness and the potatoes were buttery and cheesy with chives and a little bacon. My mom ordered the pork belly burnt ends. They were sweet and savory with a nice BBQ flavor. She ordered the green beans and creamed corn. The green beans had a smoky taste and the corn was sweet and creamy. My son who is now an Airman wanted to try Smokey Mo's so we returned. This time, I ordered the two meat plate with smoked turkey and had to get the pork belly burnt ends. My sides were a green salad and creamy potato salad. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants some good ole' Texas barbecue. The staff was nice and the restaurant was comfy and cozy. Try the BIG RED soda in a bottle or Agave creme soda from the soda fountain. My mom paid $136 dollars total with a military discount for seven people. Please go to Smokey Mo's! It will not disappoint.

The main event was tender, perfectly cooked pork ribs (about 6 of them) with a side of sauce which had just the right amount of kick to it. I mean I could've have asked for a better bbq sauce. The combo included two slices of white bread and a garnish of pickle slices and onions. I sprang for a dessert, the Oreo Chocolate pudding which was velvety soft and delicately sweet featuring a softened Oreo cookie right in the center. It was perfection! I reiterate. This is bbq done right, without all the gimmicks. My final comment is Bill who??

I'll start with the good: The jerk chicken was delicious. You can tell the chicken is marinated. It's fall off the bone tender. The jerk is super flavorful and warm without being too hot. I could bottle the jerk seasoning! The Mac and cheese was also great. The noodles weren't over cooked and it was creamy and flavorful. I also liked the interior. It was unique and artistic! The rest felt like a miss to me. After trying the jerk chicken I had high expectations for the fried chicken but was disappointed. The fried chicken was oily and lacked that "crunch" you want from good fried chicken. The batter wasn't very seasoned. Maybe that's just compared to the jerk but I was hoping for more. It also wasn't nearly as good texture wise. I tried the masala fries and was underwhelmed with them as well. Average extra crispy fries with some light seasoning. We also tried the Coco rolls. They were okay. Basically a yeast roll with sweetened butter. Not bad but pretty bland. Service was fairly friendly.
